Portugal has always been the border of the Old Continent, the last bulwark from which one could only go towards the Ocean, and this has given its people the navigator's temperament that has made this country the first to want to dis cover what was beyond the borders of the known land and sea. Explorers but at the same time conservative towards their land and traditions , the Portuguese often had to defend themselves against the expansion aims of the ir neighboring conquistadores, the Spanish, and the refore for a long time they allowed themselves to be contaminated by the culture and art of the rest of Europe in a slow way, with an attitude almost of resistance that then regularly turned into cus tomization of the architectural, pictorial, sculptural curre nts giving their cities unique shapes and cha racteristics. The Manueline style of the historic mansions and the azulejos that color the walls of the houses and civil and re ligious buildings a re an e xample of the originality that has dis tinguishe d the cultural production of this fascinating country; however, the wind of change of the twentieth century could not fail to involve the Lusitanian artists , some of whom were not only protagonis ts of the artistic production of the ir country but, by virtue of their link with the European cultural world, also of the interna tional scene. Among the most important names we mus t remem ber Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, a friend of Modigliani and Brâncuşi, who was an important re presentative of Cubism; the great Maria Helena Vie ira da Silva, a leading e xponent of Abstract Expressionism and one of the few women artists who managed to establish themselves inte rnationally at a time when female art was still in the shadows com pared to male art; Júlio Pomar, who initially established himself as a politically committed Neorealistic style during the dark years of Salazar's dictatorship, the n turned towards a unique and personal language halfway between Abstract E xpressionism , Surrealism and Informal, still conside red one of the leading represe ntants of Portuguese painting; and last but not least, Paula Rego, an e xponent of the London School togethe r with Francis Bacon and Lucie n Freud, who has recounte d in all her works the difficulties of be ing a woman in a traditionalis t country like Portugal without negle cting the subtle nostalgia, the sense of belonging, to her places of the s oul, to the scenes of everyday and popular life that have always remained within he r des pite the distance and success that the English capital re cognized he r. In the contemporary e ra Lis bon, a city steepe d in history and cultural heritage of g reat de pth, has been transformed into a contemporary metropolis that manifests the desire to be in strong contact with a lively and dynamic artistic scene , taking advantage of its strategic geographical position to act as a mee ting point for artists from all over the world whose opportunities to be known and discovered by the general public as well as by those working in the field, are fa r supe rior to the ir colleagues of the previous century. The grea ter ease in travelling, in be ing visible worldwide thanks to the virtual world that did not yet exist until the late Nineties, are incredible resources that cannot not be fully exploited, be cause the risk would be to be out of the times and miss im portant opportunities and possibilities; however, art must be e njoyed vis à vis, through close contact, letting emotions be re leased and envelop you whe n you find yourself in front of a work of art, listening to the energy that comes out of the images and goes straight to the emotional strings of the obse rver. Here , then, is the importance of the role of those who work in the contemporary art world, which mus t be a point of conjunction between the creator of artworks of, because this is what it is about regardless of the importance or historicisation of an artist, and the public who nee ds to know and discover expressive languages close to today's world, sim ilar to their own inne r motions, in accordance with the accelerations and modifications that contemporary reality gene rates and lives. The Atelie r Natalia Gromicho gallery has set as its main mission to introduce the Lisbon public, but also the inte rnational tourism that daily crowds the stree ts of the historic district of Chiado, artistic voices from all over the world through the beautiful exhibition Lisbona Contemporanea that has representatives of Brazil, Pe ru, Switzerland, Argentina, Hungary, Bosnia and He rzegovina, Austria, Romania , Italy, Lebanon, Kuwait, in a dialogue and stylistic comparison that can only enrich visitors but also the artists themselves. Because contamina tion and synergy have always been the starting point and the evolutionary future of every artis tic-cultural expression. the fulcrum of transformations and creative growth and the incubator of new and unpublished languages that can be generate d from tha t very compa rison. For me, whose main aim is to promote and make contemporary art be known, it is an honor to be the Official Critic of an event that is a wonde rful opportunity to discover ne w voices and to bring into dialogue countries that are so differe nt and distant in terms of historical and cultural contexts but united under the sign of art. “In contem pora ry art the contamina tion, the synergy, be tween differe nt e xpressive forms has often merged to give life to new manifestations of a creative ins piration strongly oriente d to singularity; fusing and associating te chniques that had never previously coexiste d or conce ived to gene rate an artwork is the main feature of today’s protagonist.“ Marta Lock

Adriano Bernetti da Vila| Italy LISBONA CONTEMPORANEA 2020

“For many artists the encounter with abs tract painting starts immediate ly, an almost obligatory choice because they re cognize it as a means of e xpression more sim ilar to their own irrepressible need to e xpress emotions without having to submit to rules and without be ing lim ited by the borders of the known, by what the eye sees. For others , it is a phase that starts later, as if the drawing, the surrende r of reality, was not enough to express the most interior concepts that are pressing to come out. Adriano Bernetti Da Vila was born as an artist thanks to his pate rnal geniuses and the careful observation of the execution by that father, from which he absorbed, almost uncons ciously, the secrets of the realist technique who had characterized its production.” Marta Lock

“The pictorial approach of today's leading a rtist sta rts from the desire to merge the order of geometry, the rigor of a we ll-defined scheme , the inevitable tende ncy to emotionality that cannot be se parated from man, from that des ire to remembe r, and some times to te ll, an interiority that is unable to fit within those same patterns that very often it is itself that imposes itself. Marta Lock

Cristina Barr| Argentina LISBONA CONTEMPORANEA 2020

The object of my work here is to explore our individualistic, pleasure-driven e xistence which seems to be justifie d only as part of the "pos ing culture" on social media. For this se ries of grand format portraits, my "muses" are not established fashion icons but just unknown young people striving for their flee ting mome nt of glory on Instagram, creating a performance of "self". The models thus reveal their feelings: selfpossession, doubt, this assertiveness that comes to them feeling the power of their beauty, but they all share a comm on ce rtainty: the awa reness that their "fame" is short-lived, and that they are as fragile as sitting ducks. This se ries scrutinizes the performativity aspect of our lives, and als o, the voyeuristic aspect of how we are experiencing other people.

I was born in Oradea, Romania , but I went to Vienna, Austria, at the age of 19. After so many professional and geographical losses, I settle d in the Aus trian capital and s tarte d to study De corative Art and Pedagogy in my native town. At the moment I live a childhood dream that I use naively in my works. I love the colors that they I can define in my works and that in turn represent the everyday experiences and em otions. People see me colorful and joyful.

Fabrizio Dessì| Italy LISBONA CONTEMPORANEA 2020

Mild wome n and the multifaceted reality of the works of Maestro Fabrizio. “The history of art is full of famous artis ts who drew inspiration from female figures , some great personalities of their e pochs , while other illus trious unknowns whose beauty, however, had struck the artist's gaze to the point of wanting to immortalize it. The portraiture tradition has then almos t dissolved, or to say it better, has changed a Classical representation to arrive at new e xpressive languages of Mode rn a rt; Maestro Fabriz io was inspired by that group of twentieth-century greats who maintained a solid link with the female portrait.” Marta Lock

Giusy Cristina Ferrante| Italy LISBONA CONTEMPORANEA 2020

“Many contemporary artists de libe rately choose not to fall within any scheme, neither stylistic nor m uch less figura tive which could somehow make them feel too tied to a specific ide ntity, because their most pressing imperative, the one stronger than anything else, is to feel absolutely free to express yourself. Today's protagonist chooses to refuse to belong only to a pictorial genre in order to discover, from time to time, the closest language when creating a work. Marta Lock

Jaber Khudhair| Kuwaiti LISBONA CONTEMPORANEA 2020

“Jaber Khudhair is a Kuwaiti artist who has managed to achieve a fascinating synthesis through the tendency of recounting life ’s joyful m oments. Small convivial m oments in which the beautiful sensations emerge not only of leisure but also of simple, delicate, and se rene feelings. The te chnique of decom posing the image is through geome tric shapes typical to Cubism, with contrast to the earthy tones of Braques which are re placed by brighter and more chee rful colours, simila r to the artist's vision of life. In the course of his twenty-year ca reer Jabe r Khudhair has participate d in g roup e xhibitions all over the world - from Lebanon to Venezuela, Oman to Italy, Banglades h to Chile , and he has rece ived several inte rnational awards. In addition to that, Jabet Khudhair received the State Encouragement Awards in Fine Arts in 2018.” Marta Lock

My pictorial work is framed within an optical realism, and its characte ristic is the distortion of the human figure and the horizon tha t would be the background, all based on realism , only here the lowe r limbs are distorted in rela tion to the uppe r and the background landscape is convex and aims to furthe r highlight the characteristic of the main characters. I call this distortion with the name of: "trunk-conical distortion", having as definition the following: "It is the distortion that unlike the cartoon, which uses the face as the basis of its deformation, instead uses the figure human to mold it to the generatrix of a cone , starting from the head towards the waist, the vertex being the sta rting point of the distortion and culminating at the base of the cone whe re the characte r's trunk would be.

Maria Luigia Scala | Italy LISBONA CONTEMPORANEA 2020

Maria Luigia Scala, aka MarilĂš, was born in '79 in Puglia, to a Roman mother and an Apulian father; Puglia is the place of the family, of the roots. At ten he moved to Gubbio, Umbria, where he still lives today.Just a little more than a child, she began to show a great interest in art in all its forms, she loves drawing and painting, she is fascinated by sculpture and has an innate predisposition for music. After finishing her scientific studies, she enrolled in the Faculty of Psychology, graduated, deciding to combine her other great passion: that for horses with her studies, becoming coordinator of a hippotherapy center, a job that fills her with great satisfaction and emotions always new and very strong.Parallel to her many commitments, MarilĂš continues to cultivate, as a self-taught her passion for art, and painting becomes increasingly her refuge, her place, her moment to find herself and to recharge herself. He loves to paint mainly at night, the most intimate and silent moment of the day in his small studio, which looks like an art workshop of the past. Her works, which are born in the most disparate ways, from a memory to a news heard in passing, are the perfect synthesis between her roots, the land in which she lives and the curiosity that leads her to experiment with various techniques using different colors and materials .MarilĂš's art is like her: constantly evolving, an art with a strong personality, but never the same as itself.

Mike Ferrell| Spain LISBONA CONTEMPORANEA 2020

In my work I endeavour to portray life in a positive light, to show the love I have for the world, its cultures and the e nvironme nt in which we all live. The inte rpretation betwee n colour, texture and the way that people inte ract with the ir s urroundings are very important to me. If in my own way I can use my art to bring love, happiness, and the apprecia tion of life into the lives of people who see my work then I have achieved my goal. In the end it is up to the individual. I work in oils , watercolours, inks and pastels. I do not like to tie myself down to any one media or subje ct matter.

Stefania Grazioli | Italy LISBONA CONTEMPORANEA 2020

In the dense weave of / signs , the forms chase each other, embrace, unite and move away and then find themselves in a cente r, symbol, essence, com positional nucle us, e xpression of an introspective journey. The idea of working on symbolic images derives from retracing and setting the stages, the goals of an everchanging inne r journey, exactly as visual compositions a re the expression of a beating and thinking heart. The symbolic image is shattered in many forms giving rise to a complexity of / signs. The eye travels every track, the island, unites it to the othe rs and then follows a direction that leads to the heart of the composition. The artistic expe rimentation is closely linked to personal research, the two are interconnected and insepa rable from each other since they are born from a feeling of love in cons tant evolution exactly like the signs / signs in continuous mutation within the differe nt compositions. The two works proposed "Rinascita" and "Amigdala" belong to my recent work entitled "Trajectories of / signs".
