welcome Hello and welcome to Lismore – the heart of the Northern Rivers. We are lucky enough to live in an extraordinary part of the world that boasts beautiful attractions, country hospitality and a unique alternative culture. Our region is renowned for being a leader in sustainability and we celebrate and pay respects to our Bundjalung people, among the oldest cultures in the world, who have lived sustainably on this land for thousands of years. Lismore has some of the most biodiverse rainforests in Australia just a short drive away as well as our nation’s most famous alternative lifestyle capital, Nimbin, and character-filled villages and hamlets in the hills surrounding the city. You will find cottage industries and accomplished artists, delicious eateries, colourful markets and much more. In our city you can enjoy a range of topclass restaurants, pubs and boutique shops in our CBD, sit on the grass in our

new town square The Quadrangle and enjoy a local performance, or explore the amazing street art in our Back Alley Gallery, which has breathed new life into our inner-city laneways. Whether you are here for sightseeing, cultural experiences, sport, health, education, business, shopping or just to explore our region, please drop into our Visitor Information Centres, where the friendly staff can help you discover the very best of what Lismore has to offer. We hope you love Lismore, Nimbin and our villages as much as we do! Isaac Smith Mayor of Lismore Acknowledgement to Bundjalung Country... The Aboriginal people of this area are the Bundjalung. This country is sacred to them and we urge you to respect their land, culture and beliefs.

Between the rainforest and the sea

in the NSW Northern Rivers – just 45km inland from Byron Bay and 100km south of the Gold Coast – Lismore is the cultural and economic heart of the region.

villages

Dotted throughout the

rolling green hills of the region are

tiny, postcard-perfect villages just waiting to be explored. Each village has its own character, with antique and curio shops, galleries, pubs and cafés.

bexhill (10k from Lismore) The view from the Open Air Cathedral makes it a popular spot for weddings or just a quiet place to sit and ponder. Bexhill’s tiny church attracts organists from Sydney and Brisbane. The general store has the best home-made curries this side of Mumbai.

clunes (20k from Lismore) Once a staging post on the Lismore to Bangalow Road, Clunes is said to be the birthplace of the area’s dairy industry. There are some beautiful examples of federation houses and fine, early Australian church architecture. Clunes Coffee, at the Clunes Store & Cellar, has great coffee and pizza and a friendly village atmosphere. Uncle Pete’s Books is a literary treasure house with more that 20,000 works of fiction and non-fiction to challenge and delight the most ardent bibliophile.

dunoon (20k from Lismore) Surrounded by endless rows of macadamia plantations, Dunoon is one of the largest Macadamia growing regions in Australia. It’s also the gateway to Rocky Creek Dam, the major source of the region’s drinking water and one of the most beautiful picnic and barbecue spots around. Swimming and boating are prohibited but there’s a great playground and plenty of nature walks.

eltham (15k from Lismore) Just off the Lismore to Bangalow Road, in a picturesque valley, is the historic railway village of Eltham. You can hire the local court for tennis then pop across the road for a refreshing ale at the Eltham Pub, with real country hospitality and great pub food. Along Boatharbour Road is Eltham Valley Pantry, a restored farmhouse café on a working pecan and coffee plantation.

the channon (20k from Lismore) The Channon is home to the North Coast‘s original craft market and, after more than 30 years, their “make it, bake it or grow it” credo still stands. On the second Sunday of each month, thousands of people pour into the village to enjoy homemade

cuisine and hand-crafted goods and be entertained by buskers. With up to 250 stalls, it’s one of the biggest markets in NSW. The heritage listed The Channon Tavern is popular with visitors and locals. The Tavern’s restaurant is open for lunch 7 days a week, dinner Tues to Sunday (Kitchen closed Monday) evening with delicious meals and crispy ales.

29

Nearby is the World Heritage-listed Nightcap National Park, where the rainforest trail follows the palm-fringed creek to Protesters Falls, named after the anti-logging campaign in the late 1970s which led to the declaration of the national park.

wyrallah (10k from Lismore) Downstream from Lismore on the Wilsons River, the village of Wyrallah was once a bustling port. Just south of the village, the Aboriginal Bora Ring at the back of Tucki Tucki Cemetery is a sacred ceremonial site for the Bundjalung people. Further down the road, the Tucki Tucki Nature Reserve is a koala haven that was planted in the 1950s by locals to preserve natural habitat.
