In my undergraduate study, I majored in the landscape while taking many courses in urban design and urban planning. Stepping into urbanism fields, I gradually grew a motivation of integrating urbanism with the landscape in design. At the same time, I also developed a strong interest in interdisciplinary study, especially data analysis in the field of multidisciplinary design. While combining urbanism with the landscape, I realized that there was a strong desire in me to take a further step in study of multidisciplinary design when I knew about Long Ying's combining technology with urban development by chance, where Long Ying led his team to use data to identify shrinking cities from various perspectives for exploring the formation and decline of these "natural cities", which substantially broadened my horizon. Subsequently, I suddenly realized it is inevitable that technology will be used in design in the future, which can definitely help designers and planners obtain accurate information and improve their working efficiency. My first attempt to take into innovative design practice is to build an inclusive community for the vulnerable in Longhua District. I used the digital data platform to find out the gathering place of them in which mixed types of business distribution are highly suggested. Other crowd portraits and questionnaire data indicated and confirmed the reason for their gathering and the release point of low-skilled employment information. The digital data collection survey eventually strengthened my design strategies and eliminated physical space constraints so that the vulnerable groups could practically integrate into society. Meanwhile, my second attempt to combine technology with multidisciplinary design is applied to a research for the resilience of communities in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic. In order to make the design research more accurate and keep it on the right track, I put comprehensive sensors at some nodes where people in the area mostly pass by to collect identification information and proposed to correspond defensive strategies for different risk level areas in this design process. This design aimed to answer the question of "How is the epidemic situation prevented and identified, and how to deal with it after it arrives?", which enabled me to be capable of taking a further step to the multidisciplinary design fields. Similarly, the technical design method was also applied by me on the construction site of the Mangrove Museum next to the Shenzhen Mangrove Nature Reserve. I created a low-risk bird survival landscape that visitors can experience in-depth from multiple angles outside the museum. What’s original of the design is that VR and holographic projection were used to display the project. After which I realize that the application of technology to multidisciplinary design has widened my imagination of it and motivated me to learn more about it. Also, the inclusive and open academic atmosphere at the University of Edinburgh has always attracted me deeply and I believe the course will substantially equip me with more advanced skills and knowledge of multidisciplinary design. Moreover, I am confident that studying at the University of Edinburgh will provide me a successful career in the future.

Schematic diagram of cross-district commuting

The cases of new coronary pneumonia in Shenzhen are all imported cases. Among them, from the analysis of OD data and industry ID data, it can be seen that due to the convenient interregional rail transit system and the industrial agglomeration distribution in Shenzhen, young adults who work across urban areas have become the source of imported cases.

The design site is located around the Sanhe Recruitment Market in Longhua District, Shenzhen, with an area of about 20 hectares. The recruitment center publishes recruitment information through intermediaries to recruit temporary workers and factory workers with low-skilled needs. Due to the existence of this recruitment center, a group of low-level laborers gathered here. They work without stable income and legal protection, and rely on low consumption.

Multifunctional Box

The gathering of this special vulnerable group brings huge security risks to the surrounding area. It was also crowded out by the surrounding residents. The design hopes to build an online information sharing platform and an offline recruitment service center with the help of the renewal project of Sanhe Talent Market and the old renovation project of urban villages. The platform design combining offline and online will become a springboard for this disadvantaged group, helping them to regenerate and reintegrate into society. In addition, the variable multi-functional space design is used to alleviate the contradiction between the use of public space by this group of Sanhe and surrounding residents.

The design site is located in Shenzhen National Nature Reserve, Futian Mangrove Wetland Park. This reserve is an important transit point in the East Asia-Australia migratory bird flight zone, and it is also an important habitat for wetland birds in Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The design chooses the protection-oriented wetland bird habitat as the core concept, and turns the mangrove museum landscape into an education base for bird habitat, which reduces the pressure of popular science education in the nature reserve and reduces the interference of people entering. In the design, how to create an ecologically green wetland habitat for birds, while taking into account the natural educational effect of the site on people, has become a major measurement issue. Project concept, site, programme and plan: The Artisan Workshop derives from the seasonal nature of orchards farming through pruning, harvesting and preserving; and the planting grids of the orchards. The building design is a timber grid that shapes spaces, provides storage, and structures the walls and roof. Through everyday use, the building grid fills and empties of crafts, products, firewood, and tools, so the building changes with the seasons, reflecting the cycles of the rural landscape. The Artisan Workshop is divided into two workshops. Small visitor groups work with villagers producing orchard-related products. One workshop produces handcrafts, wood bowls, lampshades and screens. The second workshop produces edible products such as pear brandy, fruit jams preserved and dried fruits. Visitors enter in between the workshops. In the summer, workshops can work outside.

Grid wall system elevations and sections, infill system and façade composition: The wooden grid structural system defines interior spaces and is a storage wall filled with materials. The grid provides for functional parts of the program, including cooking facilities and workshop equipment. A second-floor allows the public to view crowns of blossoming fruit trees to the north. The kitchen volume is a double height space. Construction process and material description: The grid allows making larger components off-site, which are assembled on site allowing for a quicker construction time. The grid infill, attachment of polycarbonate walls and asphalt roof occur on site. The 75 x 75-millimeter timber grid with 0.5m spacing uses lap-joints to simplify construction. The grid walls are weatherproofed with polycarbonate sheets on one or both sides. Infill uses heavy materials at lower levels and lighter and changing infill above. A single-pitch asphalt clad roof makes a simple form. Plywood sheathing with asphalt shingles providing a waterproofing wrapping the roof and north walls into one volume.
