The Past:

As the oldest European settlement on the Mississippi River, the roots of Natchez run deep. It is one of the only towns in America recognized with its own national park – Natchez National Historical Park (pg.13). Natchez will celebrate its tricentennial in 2016. The Natchez Indians have resided in this riverfront haven for centuries. Their ancestors, the Plaquemine, date back to 700 BC. As time wore on, the region’s opportune access to the Mississippi River drew settlers from across the globe. French explorers were the first to arrive, meeting local tribes atop riverfront bluffs to forge a new community that unfortunately led to tragic conflict and elimination of the Natchez Tribe. Their story remains, however, in the mounds and museum of the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians (pg.13). The French were also the first to bring enslaved Africans to the region. Soon the English, Scottish and Spanish settlers followed - and later the Irish and Italian - and all cultures shaped the Natchez we know today. 5

The Mississippi Territory was created here in 1798 after the Spanish departure, with the American flag first raised at the House on Ellicott Hill (pg.11). Soon the territorial capital moved out to Washington, Mississippi, which led to the creation of Historic Jefferson College (pg.13). Natchez then served as the first capital of Mississippi after statehood in 1817, with the state legislature meeting at Texada.

African American Culture:

Natchez is a bastion of African American culture and history. From the enslaved peoples’ many talents to the brave stands of civil rights leaders in the 60s, African American culture has irrevocably shaped the landscape of Natchez – both physically and metaphorically.

Visitors to Natchez can explore the rich history of African Americans through a myriad of sites and landmarks. Antebellum Charm

Natchez offers an impressive array of antebellum architecture. Home to more than 75 neoclassical and Greek revival style dwellings, visitors can step back in time and see the world as it once was. Majestic museum homes like Magnolia Hall , Rosalie, Stanton Hall, Melrose, and Auburn (pg.11) provide a year-round glimpse into a bygone era. The annual Spring Pilgrimage is a tribute to this antebellum age. During this fourweek period, historic homeowners open their doors to throngs of visitors as they have since 1932. Costumed guides, often descendants of the homes’ original owners, lead guests on period tours. Spring flowers bloom, and we celebrate the unique charm of our Southern city.

Set beside the mighty Mississippi River, Natchez has long been a hub for trade, cultural confluence and travel. Canoes, flatboats, keelboats, steamboats, tugboats and barges – all traveled on the great river. Cotton and goods were sent to all corners of the world. Today, visitors can enjoy the sights of this American landmark by strolling a nature trail beside the river, trying their luck at our two riverfront casinos, kayaking or canoeing, or even camping out along the riverbed. Another awe-inspiring landmark is the 444-mile Natchez Trace Parkway (pg.14), a true testament to American history. This scenic byway begins its journey at the Mississippi River in Natchez and winds all the way to Nashville, Tennessee. This path was once tread by buffalo, then American Indians – and finally, utilized as a walking route by Ohio Valley traders. Today, the Trace tells the story of the South through a vast array of historical sites and wayside exhibits.

Poised atop tall bluffs, Natchez welcomes visitors from far and wide with breathtaking scenery and stunning vistas. From the sparkling expanse of the Mississippi River to the lush greenery along the Natchez Trace (pg.14), lovers of the great outdoors will find countless sights, sounds and scenery to engage them. 7

Scenic byways are another unforgettable aspect of the Natchez experience. These winding trails make their way in and around our picturesque landscape, past running rivers, stunning vistas and lush greenery. Highway 61, known as the “Blues Highway” running from New Orleans up through Memphis and St. Louis, has been the subject of songs by some of the world’s greatest blues musicians and passes several notable landmarks. The legendary Great River Road follows the mighty Mississippi, tracing its course for more than 2,000 miles through the landscape of Natchez and across the country. The historic El Camino Real, “The King’s Highway” Highway 84, is another noted corridor that runs east-west from Texas to Georgia, full of fascinating outposts and historical sites.

⁄On the corner of Pearl Street and Washington Street is the antebellum house MAGNOLIA HALL. It was built in the late 1850s and restored by the Natchez Garden Club.

The Greek Revival building on the corner of Commerce and Washington Streets is TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH. The church features rare art glass windows designed and installed by Louis C. Tiffany.

⁄TEMPLE B’NAI ISRAEL sits across Washington Street from Trinity Church. Built in 1905, it replaced the first synagogue, which had been built in 1872 and burned in 1904. Open by appointment.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, built about 1828, which houses a collection of photographs depicting the history of Natchez by photographer Henry Norman and restored by the late Natchez resident Dr. Thomas Gandy.

⁄Across Pearl Street from the church is NATCHEZ CITY HALL and behind it facing Wall Street is the ADAMS COUNTY COURTHOUSE, built in the 1820s and renovated in the 1920s.

⁄On State Street, between Canal and Wall Streets, sits the WILLIAM JOHNSON HOUSE. Johnson, a freed black man who worked as a barber, wrote a diary describing Natchez life in the pre-Civil War days. The William Johnson House is now a part of the Natchez National Historical Park.

⁄AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MUSEUM is housed in the 1904 post office at corner of Main and Wall Streets. The museum traces the history of African Americans in Natchez and the South.

THE HOUSE ON ELLICOTT HILL was one of the first restoration projects in the city, undertaken in the 1930s and also was the site of the raising of the first American Flag over the Natchez Territory in 1797.

⁄STANTON HALL, built in the 1850s and now owned and preserved by the Pilgrimage Garden Club, is considered by many to be the grandest of the Natchez mansions. On the grounds of Stanton Hall is the famous Carriage House Restaurant, known for its fried chicken and tiny Southern-style biscuits.

The Natchez Trails will lead you through a literal trail of Natchez history where you will enjoy the architectural treasures of one of the most historically intact towns in the United States.

Trail (pg.13) you will see the panoramic view of the Mississippi River like that seen by Natchez Indians before the 1700s. On the North and South Trails you can walk the sidewalks of the streets laid out by the Spanish before 1800 and see the grand homes of cotton planters, the modest quarters of enslaved peoples, and the bustling post-Civil-War retail district. The St. Catherine Street Trail will take you through some surprising aspects of Natchez history out to the Forks of the Road (pg.13) slave market site.

Begin your tour at The Trails Pavilion (pg.40) located near the corner of Broadway and Franklin Street. An outdoor kiosk is there to help you get on your way and parking is available. Streetside interpretive panels provide a view of the city as it was and offer a historical narrative of the landmarks you will encounter on your journey. On the Bluff 15

UNIQUELY NATCHEZ The Quick Trip Two-Day Itinerary When planning a trip to Natchez, always add a little extra time to your schedule, because you’re bound to want to stay a little longer. The main comment we hear from visitors? “Oh my, we didn’t realize there was so much to do!” To help you navigate your Natchez experience, we’ve compiled some short itineraries and items that are unique to Natchez and the surrounding area. Make sure you allow yourself enough time to hit the important items on your agenda … or at least make time to come back for another visit. Special Note: Most of the shops and historic homes that are open daily close around 5 p.m. Most shops are not open on Sundays, but the historic sites are, so make sure to adjust your plans accordingly.

• Arrive in Natchez, and make the Natchez Visitor Center (pg. 3) your first stop (it’s open 7 days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) or visitnatchez.mobi on your smartphone for all the info you need. • Do some shopping in our quaint downtown or area shops. Remember, most of them do close at 5:00 p.m. so schedule your activities around those hours. • Tour some of the finest antebellum (1860) mansions in the world. • Later in the evening, meander your way to the bluff for an evening sunset. Regardless of the time of year, the views are exquisite. Natchez also boasts magnificent walking trails along the riverfront. A quick run, walk or leisure time on a park bench is the perfect way to end the day.
