About Literary Arts

Portland Book Festival (PBF) is a program of Literary Arts. Founded in 1984, Literary Arts is a community-based nonprofit literary organization located in downtown Portland, Oregon. Our mission is to engage readers, support writers, and inspire the next generation with great literature.

Programs of Literary Arts

ENGAGE READERS:

Portland Arts & Lectures brings the world’s most celebrated writers, artists, and thinkers to our community and connects readers and writers of all ages through classroom visits and workshops.

Portland Book Festival brings writers and readers of all ages together to celebrate a shared passion for books. Next year’s Portland Book Festival will take place on November 8, 2025.

Readers Seminars cultivates community around the shared experience of reading. By gathering around books, we engage in dialogues with authors we love and artists who show us new perspectives.

The Archive Project Radio Show and Podcast features the most soughtafter recordings from our Portland Arts & Lectures series, Portland Book Festival, and other community events. Each week, new lectures are available to stream for free. Listen on OPB Radio Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m., on our website at literary-arts.org/archive, or wherever you get your podcasts.

SUPPORT WRITERS:

Programs for Writers supports, promotes, and celebrates Oregon’s writers and publishers. In addition to the Oregon Book Awards & Fellowships for emerging and established writers, the program also offers writing classes and literary events at our downtown center and produces the Oregon Book Awards Author Tour, which connects writers and readers throughout the state.

INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION:

Youth Programs inspires public high school students to write, publish, and perform their own creative writing. Writers in the Schools residencies bring working writers into classrooms. Students to the Schnitz gives young people access to great books and influential authors. The College Essay Exchange pairs mentors with college applicants. And the annual Verselandia! and East Side Slam poetry slams showcase high school spoken word artists.

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 2024 Portland Book Festival, presented by Wells Fargo. This is a big year: 2024 marks the tenth festival as a program of Literary Arts. We relaunched Portland Book Festival in 2015, continuing the beloved Wordstock festival that began in 2005. In the decade since, PBF has grown and changed each year as we continuously respond and improve, and Literary Arts is proud to celebrate a decade hosting the largest general interest book festival in the Pacific Northwest.

What makes a book festival so exciting is not only the books featured; and there is a wide variety this year, as every year, from award-winning poets to romance novelists, from masters of horror to some of the best new memoirs and essay collections, from picture book superstars to exciting new talent in mystery and suspense. What makes a book festival so amazing to be a part of is not just the books, it’s the people: the authors, certainly, but also the hundreds of volunteers and the thousands of attendees who come together on an often-drizzly Saturday in early November in a shared love of storytelling and the written word. We genuinely could not do this without you, and we are so happy you are here.

We hope you have a wonderful Portland Book Festival: that you explore the weeklong Cover to Cover programming in your own neighborhood or somewhere new to you, that you embrace discovery and serendipity on festival day at a pop-up reading or with a new-to-you genre. Thank you for joining Literary Arts in a decade of celebrating books and storytelling at Portland Book Festival.

Happy reading,

General Festival Information

Portland Book Festival features more than 100 presenters in onstage author events, kids’ story times, pop-up readings, and writing workshops. This one-day celebration also includes a book fair featuring more than 80 national and local vendors, as well as local food trucks and other activities.

Writing workshops for youth and adults will run online and in person throughout the festival week. In addition, Portland Book Festival Cover to Cover, a week of free neighborhood literary encounters, takes place from October 28 to November 3 in multiple locations throughout the Portland area. Find more information about other activities around the festival on pages 15–21 in this guide.

Event Entry Info

A festival pass admits you, space permitting, to all inperson PBF events, with the exception of the Ani DiFranco and Richard Powers events, which require a ticket for entry. We encourage you to purchase and pick up your passes in advance. Advance passes and information are available at pdxbookfest.org.

Entry to and seating at Portland Book Festival events is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and standing in line does NOT guarantee entry to any specific event even with a festival pass. Plan to arrive early to your desired events. Saving seats is not permitted. All rooms will be cleared between events. If your desired event is at capacity, you can check out a different discussion, find a pop-up reading, explore the Portland Art Museum (PAM), or take a break at the food carts.

Book Signing and Policies

Authors will sign books immediately following their onstage event unless otherwise noted. Books must be purchased from a festival bookstore in order to be signed, with the exception of one pre-owned book per author. Why do we restrict pre-owned books? On-site book sales are absolutely critical to the success of the festival. By purchasing books at the festival, you support the independent bookstores that partner with us, as well as the authors and publishers who travel from near and far to share their work at the festival. Thank you for your support and understanding of this policy.

Book dealers are NOT allowed to bring books into the book signing area. Dealers with rolling carts and/or wagons are not allowed on the festival grounds.

Portland Book Festival features satellite bookstores at every all-day PBF stage, where attendees can purchase a book and get it signed on site. See page 11 for details on each satellite bookstore.

Anti-Harassment Policy

Literary Arts has a zero tolerance policy for harassment of any kind, including but not limited to: race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, gender presentation, sexual orientation, age, body size, disability, appearance, religion, citizenship, pregnancy, marital or familial status, and military or veteran status. Harassment includes, but is not limited to: stalking, verbal or physical intimidation, offensive verbal comments, physical assault and/or battery, harassing or non-consensual photography or recording, bathroom policing, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome physical attention.

Literary Arts recognizes that reading and writing, by their nature, include exposure to controversial and challenging ideas. Therefore, harassment does not include respectful disagreement or critique in good faith.

Literary Arts reserves the right to revoke, without refund, tickets of any attendee or participant not in compliance with this policy, as well as the right to remove any person not in compliance with this policy.

Writing from Art (Poetry) (Grades 9–12)

Facilitator: Amy Minato • 10–11:15 a.m.

In this workshop, we’ll discover parallels between visual and written art drawing inspiration from pieces in the museum collection. We’ll practice imagery, form, metaphor, and perspective to engage in conversation with actual paintings in a supportive writing community. No previous writing experience necessary! Just bring your imagination and good vibes.

I'm

Literally Dead Right Now (Fiction) (Grades 9–12)

Facilitator: Damien Miles-Paulson • 11:45 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

Write about your life as a zombie! In this workshop, you'll take a normal day and turn it into an imaginative story where you face the challenges of being undead. We’ll explore how twisting real-life moments with wild, fictional elements helps you see them in a totally new way.

Speak Your Peace (Spoken Word Poetry) (Grades 9–12)

Facilitator: Nicky Nicholson-Klingerman • 3:30–4:45 p.m.

This workshop will explore the healing and performative aspects of spoken word poetry, enaging with poetry from Gewndolyn Brooks to Brandon Leake, with time to write and perform their own poetry and share space and community with other young poets.

Write Around Portland Presents: Teens & Pre-Teens Workshops at The Judy (1000 SW Broadway)

Science Fiction and Fantasy Workshop (Age 11+)

10–11:30 a.m.

Science fiction and fantasy can transport us to the future, the past, or to a reality detached from our own. Join Write Around Portland for a workshop using sensory activities to truly unleash your imagination! Along the way, we’ll do a lot of writing and sharing, and practice giving each other positive, specific feedback. Finally, we’ll explore answers to the question: what makes an imaginary world feel “real”?

Fairy Tales & Fables Workshop (Age 11+)

12–1:30 p.m.

We all want our writing to be memorable. In this workshop, we’ll examine a portion of a fairy tale or fable that’s stood the test of time. What about the tale has stuck in people’s imaginations for so long? And how can we use imagery, voice, or powerful words to have a similar effect on modern audiences? Along the way, we’ll do a lot of writing and sharing, and we’ll practice giving each other positive, specific feedback.
