EXPLORE & EXPERIENCE Our second international festival will surprise and delight you perhaps even more than the very first one last year. Since the first fusion belly dancers started to experiment in the USA in the 80’s, this dance form has attracted an ever-growing audience and continues to inspire dancers throughout Europe, in China, the USA, Brazil, Russia in fact in every corner of the world. The abundant opportunities this dance form offers for expressing your own roots, your interests and a strong female identity incorporating sensuality and power, are irresistible. The dancers create their own cutting-edge choreography using basic oriental dance moves to express their vision on the 21th century woman. Explore this festival with this question in mind: how do present-day dancers interpret and transform this age old tradition, making it totally relevant to our age and culture? URBAN FUSION BELLY DANCE Shimmy Shake Festival 2015 invites you to enter the world of Urban Fusion belly dance in all its variety, to watch, experience, join in and enjoy all that it offers. As well as presenting the diversity of fusion belly dance, this year we have a special focus on Urban dance style mixes such as Hip Hop, popping and locking and the latest new style ‘ITS’ by UNMATA (USA). Kari is coming from Sacramento to introduce us! There are a great variety of workshops for all levels: in Burlesque or modern dance mixes, Tribal Fusion or ATS, given by our international guests. We have Eliana from Russia teaching the art of the flirt; from Portugal the fabulous Piny accompanied by the Hip Hop mixing Leo, from France we have Haza Tribal Fusion and more. Don’t miss any of the three marvelous shows to really experience Urban Fusion Belly dance in all its glory!!

Architect. Dancer. Art lover. Movement freak. Endless curiosity. Piny finished her B.A. in Architecture while she was madly in love with Hip Hop. In 2006 she started a female Hip Hop crew called ButterflieSoulflow. She discovered Tribal Fusion Belly Dance in 2007 in NYC, while she was immersed in dance classes and music. In 2009 she finished the B.A. in Contemporary Dance. Melting, researching, creating Breakdance, Hip Hop, House Dance, Waacking, Vogue. In 2012 she started Orchidaceae Urban Tribal. She also works as a Contemporary Dancer for other choreographers, splitting her time between her own stylistic languages and giving her body to others to create. She continues to study and develop her knowledge and dance skills, to travel around the world spreading the endless beauty and power of belly dance. World star Kari VanderZwaag has been teaching and performing Tribal Fusion Belly Dance since 2000. Prior to that, she had eleven years of formal training in ballet, tap and jazz. Her belly dance career started with ATS as one of the principal dancers then teacher and co-director of Invaders of the Heart, an American Tribal Style (ATS) troupe, in Davis, CA (2000-2004). Other forms of dance she has studied include Flamenco and Hula/ Tahitian making her work very individual and an explosion of styles. In 2006 Kari received the highly honored invitation to join UNMATA. She travels both nationally and internationally performing with UNMATA and supporting director Amy Sigil in teaching workshops. She is an ITS Certified Instructor and conducts Certification Tests for the ITS Format. Her UNMATA teaching experience includes: Tribal Umrah (2009- 2014), ITS Level 3 Intensives in Russia (2012) and Florida (2014). Kari currently teaches weekly ITS & Fusion classes at Hot Pot Studios in Sacramento, CA. www.unmata.com
Creative dancer, choreographer, teacher and producer. Haza explores the universe of ethnic and contemporary dance. Passionate, powerful and absolutely mystic, she embodies inventive force and has a charismatic presence. Haza walks the path between traditional and contemporary belly dance with innovative choreographies and emotional interpretation. She designs a dance of change by combining grace and energy. She is the artistic director of the Marabyliane cie and the organizer of the annual Ethnik Season Festival in Toulouse/ France. She was the co-founder of the Nadyka Company and has shared the stage with famous dancers and musicians. She is also a visual artist and a graphic designer. Known and respected as a leader in the dance community in Belgium, Portugal, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Egypt and many other countries. Obélixx is the confirmed philanthropist of Obélixx Popping Factory (O.P.F.). This organization is well known in the worldwide dance scene thanks to the diversity of nationalities of the crew members coming from all the above mentioned countries plus Tokyo and NYC. Obélixx has been practicing and sharing multiple Urban dance styles for close to 20 years. His art ranges from African rooted partner dancing to various street styles and he is a top Popping and Afro dancer and choreographer. He has co-operated with the best in the industry. Through Obélixx Popping Factory he founded The House Dance Project, featuring the strongest dancers from NYC, Finland, Japan and Italy and including the largest house dance website in the world. Leo graduated in Sports Science in 2002. In 2003 she had her first contact with Hip Hop Dance classes, but it was in 2005 that she started travelling to NYC and Los Angeles to really start studying the different dance styles in Hip Hop. In 2006 Butterfliesoulflow was born, a Hip Hop crew of female artists. Since then she has deepened and specialized her knowledge in Hip Hop, House Dance, Popping and Tap Dance. In 2013, Leo was invited to join Orchidaceae Urban Tribal. Currently she teaches Hip Hop and House Dance at Jazzy Dance Studios in Lisbon and gives workshops internationally. She participates regularly in dance battles, performances and video clips. Her studies in Osteopathy helped her create a more specific approach to the biomechanics of the human body allowing a more conscious and aware exploration of movement. www.orchidaceaeurbantribal.com

American Tribal Style Teacher and Tribal Fusion Performer. Mareike discovered the joy of dance already at a young age and spent several years as a member of a jazz dance company. The strength, femininity and pride of ATS has captivated her since 2009. Tribal Belly Dance proved to be an ideal vessel for expressing her artistic ambitions. Her dance is a delightful mixture of dark and light expression. She did her teacher training in 2011 with Carolena Nericcio and is a certified FatChanceBellydance ATS Instructor and Sister Studio. She recently re-certified through the Tribal Pura International Continuing Education. Mareike regularly travels throughout Europe to teach and perform. She acquires her skills directly from the source by hosting FCBD instructors and making regular visits to San Francisco. She teaches throughout Germany and has her base in her school in Frankfurt. Mareike is known for her expressive, moving fusion performances. www.mareike-dance.de
Growing up with a mother who dances flamenco, salsa and samba, it came very naturally to Vleer to start dancing at a very young age. She began taking Ballet and Jazz dance classes and later changing to more urban styles like Street dance and Hip Hop. In 2008 she fell in love with Tribal Fusion starting classes by Maya Acid then joining Tjarda van Straten's class after moving back to The Hague to study Art Science at the Royal Academy of Art and Royal Conservatory. Vleer loves fusing styles and after joining Hipsick Unusual Theatre in 2013 she has thrown physical theatre and butoh in the mix, which introduced a deeper emotional spectrum within her work which makes her dance style unique. It can be described as Dark Urban. Add to this her extreme make up, costumes and visual art approach to lighting and décor and you have a total theatre experience. Vleer is one half of the fusion dance duo She Beckons, has recently joined Obellycious and teamed up with Obélixx for collaboration. Vleer won the Shimmy Shake in 2013 and has successfully completed the Next Level to become a Shimmy Shake new talent.

Moving. Using the on and off balance to do it, changing directions, crossing the floor. Liquid motion through an organic winding body. Low flights through the floor, drops and slides that make us move around. We turn, spin and jump adding directions and intentions. The main idea is movement through space and a full understanding of space and body in their tri-dimensionality.

#Chapter 2 – “See what you feel and make it real” – Power of visualization. This workshop will consist of developing everything you are as a being. We will approach movement, style and coordination with techniques used in physical theatre to connect with deeper levels of body awareness. We will also create tools for character building by going through an emotional spectrum. As for raw styles we will bring you our perception of popping, belly dance, urban fusion, contemporary dance, footwork, legwork, waving and isolation’s. This year’s festival has a focus on the Urban dance fusions with belly dance. Piny and Leo both have a background in Urban dance styles as Hip Hop, Breakdance, House, Popping and Waacking. With Orchidaceae Urban Tribal they developed their own genuine dance language that truly represents the Urban Fusion where Urban and Belly dance combine into one organic mix. In this presentation they will give a brief history about the different Urban dance styles, how they got mixed into tribal and they will inspire you how they can be used in a fusion.
“Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.” (Martha Graham) This workshop is about expression in dance, how to express our personal relationship with the outside world through our movements, in an organic manner. Sometimes we get focused on presenting technique and try to impress by being so perfect in every movement forgetting that we dance to express! We dance to share our passion, our heart and soul! Eliana will teach one dance combo and some easy and helpful acting exercises. We will dance this combo to different music pieces, playing different characters to each music piece. This amazing workshop will help you to get into the role, to live the role on stage with every step, with every bit of your heart! Dance to express!

Let’s go to the legs and feet. The basic styles used in this workshop are Hip Hop, Popping, Tap Dance and House Dance Footwork. Together we will explore the possibilities for motion of the lower body with as a result that you will increase your vocabulary for layering and you will acquire new skills for greater expression in your fusion dance.
Enjoy many different dance acts by all kinds of fusion belly dancers (from amateurs to professionals including international guests) and other dancers who are inspired to mix their art with oriental dance.
