The only thing that is not done concerning the phenomenon of multiculturalism is the word itself! This was already the case when the word was joyfully introduced in the 1960s and 1970s to comfort our neo-colonial guilt feelings. And it is still not done, as the word multiculturalism is being rapidly erased in our times. Often bitterly contentious, this word now describes a target group for a claustrophobic populace looking for easy escape goats where they are none to be found.
Words of welcome Welkom bij de zesde editie van het LiteSide Festival. Dit jaar hebben we de internationaal bekende artiest Ibrahim Quraishi gevraagd om festival curator te zijn. Zijn visie (zie elders op deze pagina) op de huidige politieke en sociale, internationale situatie was de inspiratie bij veel van de programmakeuzes. We zijn dan ook trots het bijzondere werk van artiesten met verschillende achtergronden te presenteren, afkomstig uit Tunesië, Palestina, Finland, Marokko, Israel, Turkije, België, Indonesië, Bosnië, Armenië, Jemen, Engeland, Duitsland, Venezuela en natuurlijk Nederland. Op een enkele uitzondering na wonen alle artiesten in Nederland. Globalisering, goedkoop reizen en immigratie hebben het voorkomen en de cultuur van grote steden voorgoed veranderd. In het moderne leven regeert de transculturele burger. Dus kom naar LiteSide 2011 om het kosmopolitische leven op zijn Nederlands te proeven: er staat u een boeiende, inspirerende en uitdagende ervaring, én een heleboel plezier te wachten. Welcome to the sixth edition of the LiteSide Festival. This year, we have invited the internationally well known artist Ibrahim Quraishi as festival curator. His vision (see later on this page) of the current political and social international situation has inspired many of the choices in the program. We are proud to present exciting work by artists from very diverse backgrounds such as Tunisia, Palestine, Finland, Morocco, Israel, Turkey, Belgium, Indonesia, Bosnia, Armenia, Yemen, England, Germany, Venezuela and of course the Netherlands. With a few exceptions the artists presented all live in the Netherlands. That globalism, cheap travel and immigration have changed the face and culture of big cities for all time is the reality of modern life. The trans-cultural citizen rules! Art has never been limited to one culture, one style, one aesthetic, one religion or any one singular society. Art has always been crossing boundaries, crossing minds, crossing bodies, crossing cultures, crossing emotions and finally crossing all forms of political ideologies. In the words of the incomparable Pina Bausch “Do birds know if they are Dutch or German?” Art needs to be free from all ideological idioms, for it must be independent from all kinds of social constraints or political hang ups. Art is the only haven where ideologies can collide with one another, can crash into one another. Art also allows us to engage with one another in more than one way. It is the universal meeting place without any prejudice, assumptions or even a pre-ordained land. With these few words I invite you, warm-heartedly to these artistic meetings of LiteSide Festival 2011. De Vlaams-Marokkaanse choreograaf Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is zonder twijfel de meest prominente choreograaf van zijn generatie en mocht al verschillende prestigieuze prijzen in ontvangst nemen. Zijn werk is niet te categoriseren en blinkt uit in virtuoze dans, intelligent theater en rijke humor en diepgang – gevat in muzikale poëzie. Cherkaoui creëerde Labyrinth voor Het Nationale Ballet. LiteSide Festival is trots dit segment van zijn succesvolle choreografie te mogen presenteren.

De veelzijdige Karsu Dönmez beschikt niet alleen over een prachtige zangstem maar is ook een getalenteerd pianist, componist en arrangeur. Hoewel ze pas de 20 is gepasseerd, heeft ze al op talloze nationale en internationale podia gestaan, waaronder het Amsterdamse concertgebouw, North Sea Jazz Festival en twee keer in het legendarische Carnegie Hall in New York. Ze werkt momenteel aan haar debuutalbum maar heeft al een live registratie van haar uitverkochte concert in Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ op cd uitgebracht. Ze schrijft en componeert haar eigen songs, die een mix zijn van jazz, blues, funk met etnische invloeden. Dankzij haar aantrekkelijke voorkomen, mooie stem en buitengewone pianospel wordt Karsu Dönmez beschouwd als een muzikaal super talent.

Holes is een serie van vier door David Zambrano ontwikkelde duetten in samenwerking met vier dansers. Op het LiteSide Festival is het duet van David Zambrano met Milan Herich, gedanst op Perzische en Libanese muziek, te zien. David Zambrano (geboren in Venezuela) is al 25 jaar een monumentale speler in de internationale dansgemeenschap. Nog steeds beïnvloedt zijn passie voor culturele uitwisseling zijn werk. Hij woont en werkt in Amsterdam en reist de hele wereld over om op te treden en les te geven. Voor zijn projecten brengt hij artiesten van allerlei nationaliteiten samen. Holes is a series of four duets conceived and directed by David Zambrano in collaboration with four dance artists. For the LiteSide Festival Zambrano will perform a duet with Milan Herich to Persian music and Lebanese song. In deze volledige geimproviseerde theatervoorstelling krijgen de acteurs, die elkaar vooraf niet hebben ontmoet, een verhaal voorgeschoteld. Bovendien krijgt ieder van hen een persoonlijk verhaal met een probleem, dat geheim blijft voor de andere spelers maar niet voor het publiek. De toeschouwer is alwetend en daardoor ook medeplichtig. De acteurs worden in het diepe gegooid met maar één houvast: de rol die ze spelen. Verder hebben ze geen idee wat er kan gaan gebeuren en wie er wanneer ingrijpt om de loop van het verhaal een nieuwe draai te geven. In this fully improvised theatre show the actors do not meet before the show. On the night of the show they are presented with the scenario
and given their role in it which includes a certain problem which is kept secret from the others, but not from the public. The public knows everything and therefore becomes an accomplice. The actors are thrown in at the deep end, with only the small amount of information they have been given to play their part. Other than that, they don’t have a clue what could happen or who is going to jump in and change the action to give the story another twist. Radhouane el Meddeb Je danse et je vous en donne à bouffer Sat. 18.00 / MC Studio Theatre and dinner • 90 min à bouffer rond de bereiding van couscous. Spanning en vleselijke opwinding worden opnieuw ontdekt, de Tunesische wortels van de danser flirten met het eigentijdse thema diversiteit. De titel “Ik dans en ik geef je te eten” verklaart hoe el Medded door dans en koken te combineren een subtiele symbiose met zijn publiek aangaat. De zintuigen van de toeschouwer worden niet alleen geprikkeld met geluid en beeld maar ook met de geur van een maaltijd die langzaam gaart, en na afloop genuttigd wordt.

The sensuality of dance and eating come together in Je danse et je vous en donne à bouffer, a delightful solo dance performance built aorund the preparation of couscous. El Meddeb uses his Tunisian roots to flirt with the contemporary theme of diversity. The title “I dance and I feed you” explains how El Meddeb, through not only dance but also the act of preparing the couscous himself, creates a strong bond between himself and his public. A public who are not only treated to marvellous music and dancing but also smell the odours and finally taste of the food which slowly cooks on stage. De internationaal beroemde performance artiest and choreograaf Tarek Halaby bevindt zich in een fase waarin hij nieuw materiaal ontgint. Hij is aan het werk zonder dat dit moet uitmonden in een specifieke voorstelling en startte met Performing for the first time een serie die in wezen een experiment is rond de vraag hoe werk te produceren? Elke performance bestaat uit een nieuwe selectie van materiaal en onderwerpen die voor het eerst aan een publiek wordt getoond. Zult u Tarek Halaby zien dansen, zingen of spreken? Zeker is dat u een getalenteerd performer aan het werk ziet, op zoek naar zijn artistieke zelf.
Vrouwen zeggen: toon me een echte man. Mannen zeggen: toon me een echte vrouw. Kierewiet gaat over de afstand tussen mensen, het gevecht tussen mannen en vrouwen, de liefdeloosheid en de dood. De heren dansen, zingen, rappen, persifleren en mimen in een humorvolle, absurde, ontroerende en bijtende satire, die niemand spaart. Ze zijn persoonlijk, confronterend, grotesk, tragisch, komisch, ordinair, dynamisch en subversief. Women say: show me a real man. Men say: show me a real woman.
Internationally well known performance artist and choreographer Tarek Halaby is currently in a phase where he is busy experimenting with new material without the obligation to work towards a fixed performance. This series of work he has called “Performing for the first time” where during each session he investigates certain current issues making every show a new work that is performed in front of an audience for the first time. Will you see Tarek Halaby dance, sing or speak? Whatever happens, you will watch a very talented performer at work in the search of his artistic self.
Kierewiet is about the distance between people, the fight between men and women, the lovelessness and death. The three performance dance, sing, rap, mock and mime in this humorous, absurd, moving and biting satire. They are up, close and personal, tragic, comical, vulgar, dynamic and subversive.

In Wonderland worden kinderen uitgenodigd om actief deel te nemen. Ze worden gestimuleerd om hun nieuwsgierigheid en talent de vrije loop te laten, en om op een speelse manier een eigen wereld te creëren. Wonderland is een voorstelling met muziek en dans die zich richt op kinderen en hun ouders. Het is een bijzondere ervaring voor ouders om de verschuiving van toeschouwer naar artiest in hun kind(eren) te observeren in dit zorgvuldig begeleide theatrale avontuur.

Wonderland is a performance in which children actively participate, are stimulated, become curious, explore their own talent, and create their own world. Wonderland is a playfully interactive music and dance performance aimed at children and their parents. The performance moves from being for the children to being with the children and offers them a carefully guided theatrical adventure. It is also a special experience for their parents as they watch the transition of the child from viewer to performer.

Room without a View is het autobiografische verhaal van filmmaker en journalist Rada Sésíc die in 1993 uit Sarajevo vluchtte. De film laat zien hoe het is om naar een vreemd land te verhuizen en de brokstukken van je leven weer op te pakken. Sésíc vraagt zich af of oorlogsvluchtelingen wel echt gelukkig kunnen zijn, ongeacht hoe hard ze proberen zich aan te passen aan hun nieuwe leven. Room Without a View is the autobiographical journey of film-maker and journalist Rada Sésíc, who fled from Sarajevo in 1993. The film ponders on Sésíc wonderings and questions, on whether those who fled the war are really happy, in their new adapt life. Rolana Saadi groeide op in Israel als de dochter van een Joodse moeder en een Palestijnse vader. In deze voorstelling combineert ze theater, dans en zang en geeft daarmee een doorkijkje in haar gecompliceerde levensverhaal dat haar van een door oorlog verscheurd land naar Nederland heeft gevoerd. Ze laat zich daarbij inspireren door Arabische en Hebreeuwse liederen, verhalen van vrouwen in opvanghuizen in Nazareth die ze optekende en haar eigen ervaringen. Hoe is het om een transculturele vrouw in oorlogstijd te zijn? De drang naar onafhankelijkheid, de wens om je talent te ontplooien en het geluk te vinden, verbinden iedereen, ongeacht religie, nationaliteit of geslacht. Deze voorstelling is geprogrammeerd in de categorie “Jonge Helden”, waarmee LiteSide Festival jong talent een podium aanbiedt. Rolana Saadi grew up in Israel as a child of a Jewish mother and Palestinian father. In this performance Rolana Saadi uses theatre, dancing and singing to give a glimpse into her complex story which has brought her from her war torn land to the Netherlands. Inspired by the Arabic and Hebrew songs of her youth, her investigations into women’s shelters in Nazareth and her own experiences within, Rolana has created a performance about the state of being a transcultural woman in times of war. The urge to find independence and a desire to develop talent and be happy are the connections between all individuals regardless of religion, sex or nationality. This performance is part of “Jonge Helden” (Young Hero’s), a LiteSide Festival program that offers young talent the possibility to present themselves to the public. We are not giving up. We have suffered / triumphed / improved / travelled / deviated / developed a drug habit / met a new muse / gone broke / got taken over by the Right / But we are coming back with a new declaration of independence. Comeback is een multidisciplinaire voorstelling die dans, lichtsculptuur, performance en installatie combineert. De makers stellen zichzelf de vraag hoe ze kunnen reageren op hun omgeving. Ze archiveren, blikken terug, maken de inventaris op en zoeken overal en nergens naar hun wortels. Comeback is a co-creation between the different mediums involved (dance, light sculpture, performance, music and installation art. The performers question how they should react and respond to their environment. They look back and try to make sense of the now, they sum things up, acknowledge where they stand, and look for their roots anywhere and everywhere. Club Lite is the new Amsterdam based club of dj Shanto. He has been part of the Dutch Dance scene for many years and became well known for popular dance party’s like Nataraj and Techno on bare feet. Together with resident dj’s Kareem Raïhani en Iradi he will present a sparkling preview of the opening of Club Lite in September. Those three dj’s are famous for their extraordinary and very danceable global sound. They get their inspiration from all corners of the world.

Met een Australische moeder, een Jordanese vader en opgegroeid in Amerika, Engeland en Frankrijk, is het album van ANTIX doorspekt met voor ieder van die culturen kenmerkende geluiden en emoties. De eerste single van het album, “Deep Within” is een liefhebbende ode aan zijn te vroeg overleden moeder die in 2002 bezweek aan de gevolgen van kanker.

ANTIX lives in Los Angeles (USA) and has recently brought out his first album: Flammable Grammer. The first single from the album, “Deep Within” is an ode to his beloved mother who died too young from cancer in 2002. councillor Ahmed Aboutaleb inspired the AllAboutUs Filmfactory to make the film – Hey mum just tell us. Five daughters film interviews with their mothers in which they posed questions about their dreams, the relationship with the father, freedom and the restrictions that motherhood imposes. AllAboutUs Filmfactory places a camera in the hands of young people and supports them in the making of their first documentary. During an entertaining afternoon Renate Zentschnig and Anouk de Bruin will lead a workshop in storytelling with womanliness as its theme. The afternoon starts with the movie Hey Mam vertel es. AllAboutUs FilmFactory Hey Mam vertel es (2006) “Waar zijn de moeders?” Dit is een uitspraak van de voormalig Amsterdamse wethouder Ahmed Aboutaleb die AllAboutUs FilmFactory inspireerde om de film Hey mam vertel es te maken. Vijf dochters filmen hun moeders en vragen naar hun dromen, hun relatie met hun vaders, vrijheden en beperkingen en het moederschap. AllAboutUs Filmfactory geeft jonge mensen een camera in de hand en begeleidt ze bij het maken van hun eerste documentaire.
Of je nu jong of oud, dun of dik, mooi of lelijk, vrolijk of verdrietig bent: iedere vrouw heeft haar eigen unieke verhaal. Deze workshop is onderdeel van een onderzoeksproject voor een later te maken voorstelling waarin rituelen in de Hamman en verhalen van bijzondere vrouwen centraal staan. Deelnemers aan de workshop die interesse hebben, kunnen zich na afloop opgeven om in aanmerking te komen voor een rol in de voorstelling. No matter if you are young or old, fat or thin, pretty or ugly, happy or sad every woman has her own unique story inside her. This workshop is part of a research project that will culminate in a performance series taking place in Hammams where rituals and womens stories will be featured. Workshop participants with talent and interest can potentially be included in the final performance.

Slenter langs de gezellige kraampjes in de Bazaar, geniet van de beeldende kunst die je op verschillende plekken aantreft of van interactieve installaties en onverwachte, korte optredens op straat. Sahand Sahebdivani Parels All day Performance Op zondag 21 augustus presenteert Sahand Sahebdivani een aantal korte optredens waarin hij samen met zijn (theater)familie live muziek, dans en poëzie combineert tot kleine pareltjes. Hij gaat er vanuit dat grenzen niet bestaan tussen de disciplines en dat het ene onlosmakelijk verbonden is met het andere. Met Parels wil Sahand onderzoek doen naar de relatie tussen tekst, poëzie, spoken word, beweging en muziek. On Sunday 21 August Sahand Sahebdivani will delight us at different moments during the day with several “Pearls”. Each performance will be an interpretation of a poem or text in music, dance and song, created together with three other performers. Sahebdivani believes that there are no borders between these disciplines and that they are all simply a part of each other. With Pearls he will investigate the relationship and symbiose between text, poetry, spoken word, movement, dance and music.
Op LiteSide festival is het slot van het project Power to the streets! te zien. Afgelopen juni werkten graffitikunstenaars Mohammed Ali (Birmingham UK) en Ronald Duikersloot (Nederland) in verschillende Amsterdamse stadsdelen met jongeren om samen graffitiwerken te maken. Tijdens het festival werken een aantal Power to the streets! jongeren onder leiding van Ronald Duikersloot aan een nieuw graffitikunstwerk. Op het festivalterrein is bovendien een graffitikubus te bewonderen die tijdens Power to the streets! op het Sloterplas festival is gemaakt. The finale of the LiteSide project Power to the Streets! will take place during the Festival. In June this year Mohammed Ali (Birmingham UK) and Ronald Duikersloot (Nederland) were invited by LiteSide to make grafitti artworks with the local youth in four different parts of Amsterdam. The most talented have been selected to work with Duikersloot in a team to make a new artwork together. The Grafitti cube that was created during the project in June will also be on display.

De Werkelijkheid I invite you All day Performance “I invite you” is een interactieve installatie van Anush Matirossian en Negin Zendegani die bestaat uit zithoeken en een lange tafel uit palletten. De kunstenaressen nodigen de bezoekers en voorbijgangers uit plaats te nemen en in deze haastige, moderne en vaak oppervlakkige tijden een echte ontmoeting aan te gaan. Ontdek de “ander”. “I Invite You” is the title of the interactive installation created by Anush Matirossian en Negin Zendegani that is made up of two circular cosy park bench settings and a long picnic table all made of disposable wooden pallets. These two artists invite members of the festival public and passers by to take time in this rushed, stress filled civilization we live in to take a place next to them and have a chat. De Oriëntaalse Lounge is ieder jaar een hoogtepunt op het LiteSide Festival. The place to meet up or bump into festival artists is the Oriental Lounge, open Friday from 17.00, Saturday and Sunday from 14.00 and always until 23.00. Lay back and chill out to the background music of the DJs, eat and drink, smoke a waterpipe or get a henna tattoo. Every year the Oriental Lounge is a highlight of the LiteSide Festival.

Chicks, Kicks and Glory Imagine IC Art De expositie Chicks, Kicks and Glory gaat over de werkelijkheid en dromen van Nederlands-Marokkaanse kickboksende meiden, verbeeld door zeven Nederlandse striptekenaars. Onder hen zijn Peter Pontiac, Maaike Hartjes en mangatekenaar Mike Kok. Zij verbeelden voor het eerst in de Nederlandse stripgeschiedenis de persoonlijke levensverhalen van Nederlandse moslima’s.
The exposition Chicks, Kicks and Glory is about the reality and dreams of Dutch/Moroccan girls who are kickboxing and is created by seven Dutch cartoon artists. Among them are Peter Pontiac, Maaike Hartjes and manga creator Mike Kok. For the first time in the Dutch cartoon history they drew the personal life stories of Dutch Muslim girls.

Tickets, arrangementen & dinerbonnen zijn te koop op www.liteside.nl en tijdens het festival aan de kassa op het terrein zolang de voorraad strekt. De kassa is geopend vanaf 1 uur voor aanvang van het festival tot aanvang laatste voorstelling. Voor de clubavonden op vrijdag en zaterdag zijn na het sluiten van de centrale kassa tot 1.30 uur tickets aan de deur te koop.
De catering wordt verzorgd door Restaurant KiLiM. Iedere avond serveert het restaurant verschillende dagmaaltijden met als keuze vis, vlees, kip, vegetarisch en Iftar. Daarnaast zijn er snacks en kleine hapjes verkrijgbaar. KiLiM is te vinden in de Orientaalse Lounge, waar u ook de bar aantreft. In de online verkoop zijn dinerbonnen te koop. Hiervoor betaalt u € 1,50 extra aan reserveringskosten.
Op vertoon van een geldige CJP-pas, Studentenkaart of Stadspas wordt een korting van € 1,50 op tickets voor ‘losse’voorstellingen gegeven: deze korting geldt niet voor andere acties en aanbiedingen, arrangementen en combo tickets, dinnerbonnen e.a.
The festival catering will be provided by Restaurant KiLim. Every day of the festival they will provide a choice of full meals including fish, meat, chicken, vegetarian and IFTAR meals. A selection of drinks, snacks and light food is also available. You can find KiLiM at the Oriental Lounge. To guarantee speedy service and reserve your chosen meal you can buy a dinner voucher in advance online. Reservation cost: € 1,50.
Tickets for the shows, special offers, dinner vouchers and combitickets can be bought op www.liteside.nl or at the festival site (when still available). De ticket box is open one hour before the first performance through to the start of the last performance. Tickets for Club Lite Friday and Saturday can be bought from the ticket box or at the door of the club until 01.30 a.m. A reduction of € 1,50 is available on tickets for a single show on presentation of a valid CJP pass, Studentcard or Stadspas. This reduction can’t be used in combination with other special actions or offers such as arrangements, combi-tickets etc.

Weer/Weather LiteSide Festival speelt zich zowel buiten als binnen af. Ook bij regen vindt het festival gewoon doorgang. LiteSide Festival takes place indoors and outdoors. Come rain or storm we will be there!

Kinderen zijn natuurlijk van harte welkom hun ouders te vergezellen, met dien verstande dat de meeste voorstellingen in de Indoor programmering niet geschikt zijn voor deze doelgroep. Alleen op zondagmiddag is er een speciale kindervoorstelling geprogrammeerd.
Honden zijn welkom op het buitenterrein, mits ze zijn aangelijnd en geen overlast veroorzaken. Honden (en andere huisdieren) zijn niet welkom tijdens voorstellingen.
Children are very welcome to come with their parents to our festival. However the program has not been specially selected to cater for them with the exception of the children’s performance on Sunday afternoon.
