Message from Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council’s Mayor
TIM OVERALL
Congratulations to The Q for putting together another fabulous season for 2019. There are shows with an unmistakable local flavour and shows that have been hits all around the world. These include comedies, musicals and drama. In what will be an unmissable production, The Q’s new theatre company, Echo Theatre, will be producing their first show, Belfast Girls. Directed by Jordan Best and with original music by Matt Webster, this is a must-see. Belfast Girls deals with class, race and misogyny as it tells the stories of Irish girls who travelled to Australia to escape the famine. Belfast Girls runs from 24 August to 31 August. Running from 24 April to 18 May and starring Geraldine Turner as Momma Rose, Gypsy is regarded by many as the greatest musical ever created. Gypsy is set in 1920s America, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born. It is full of musical hits and is not to be missed. One of Australia’s best-loved stories, The Sapphires is coming to The Q as part of a national tour. At The Q from 13 February to 18 February, The Sapphires tells the story of four young Aboriginal women from regional Australia who find themselves spreading joy in the midst of the Vietnam War. In what will undoubtedly inspire and entertain older children, Jump First, Ask Later is a high octane performance that showcases six young champions of Western Sydney’s underground parkour and street style community. Coming to The Q on Friday 17 May, this show is a 2017 Winner of the Helpmann Award for Best Presentation for Children. I congratulate the team at The Q for putting together what looks to be another fantastic season of entertainment. Whatever your tastes, be it music, drama, tragedy or comedy make sure you check out season 2019 at The Q – Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre.

Message from our Program Manager
STEPHEN PIKE
As I look around the country, I have found that the power of storytelling is significant in many Season Programs for 2019. There is a rich supply, at present, of work that covers many varied themes. For our own Season at The Q we are presenting you with choices from multiple genres including a couple of very challenging works balanced by some really good laughs. There will be culturally significant stories to enjoy and others that resonate on a very personal level. We are producing a major musical in-house which will feature a major musical theatre star alongside our own home-grown talent, and you will see the first work created by our recently launched professional theatre company Echo. I have endeavoured to provide you with a selection of shows that you will find both relevant and appealing. There will be new works not seen in this region before as well as some that will be familiar to you. There are stories of adventure, love, friendship, family and drama and once again a fabulous dance work from Expressions Dance Company choreographed by the highly regarded Natalie Weir. In our effort to provide you with as many options as possible we will also be presenting work outside of our Subscription Shows which will include popular Children’s Stories and a very appealing Morning Melodies Series. In 2019 The Q continues to be very popular with community theatre groups and professional entrepreneurs so you will have wide-ranging choices from our hirers as well. When all is combined, I hope that your experience with us in 2019 is a year of great entertainment. We look forward to you making the choice to SEE IT LIVE. SEE IT NOW. You will also notice a lot of change around The Q over the next twelve months as work begins on a new Council Admin building as well as an upgrade to the Bicentennial Hall. Our aim will be to keep you as up to date as possible with any side effects of these changes that might require you to approach the venue from a different direction. So for a possible short period of inconvenience, I trust you will find the end result absolutely worth it.

All the regulars, a misfit crowd of eccentric and hilarious individuals. A showcase for two actors to exhibit their versatility as they double-up in a succession of several roles each. Performing both monologues and small scenes together, they take on many different characters, each short episode telling a small self-contained story. There’s Moth, who loves Maud (and every other woman) fervently; Mrs Iger, with her passion for quiet, strong men; possessive Roy, jealous of anybody who looks at Lesley (even the darts players); Alice and Fred and their Elvis obsession. While many of the monologues are a treat, it is the segments where the two actors bounce off each other directly that really shine. TWO is essentially about relationships and as they bicker their way through the night, none on display is more fascinating than that of our landlord and landlady — a married couple with an unspoken secret. How will their story end? DIRECTOR: MARK KILMURRY SET AND COSTUME DESIGNER: ALICIA CLEMENTS LIGHTING DESIGNER: MATTHEW MARSHALL SOUND DESIGNER: NEIL MCLEAN CAST: BRIAN MEEGAN AND KATE RAISON

STARRING GERALDINE TURNER AS MOMMA ROSE THE Q BRINGS YOU GYPSY. It’s hardly controversial to say Gypsy is one of the greatest musicals ever written. You can count on one hand the musicals that seamlessly meld song and dialogue with such confidence and panache to tell a story so deeply human. The story is a classic showbiz one: a pushy stage mother, Rose goes to extreme lengths to make stars of her two daughters, June and Louise. Set on the vaudeville circuit in the 1920s it’s a story about making it in show business no matter what the personal cost. Vaudeville itself is dying and Louise finds herself in a house of burlesque where she reads lines and eventually steps in to strip becoming an overnight sensation and superstar. However this is mostly her mothers story – Rose is the stage mother of all stage mothers. Arthur Laurents’ landmark show explores the world of show business with brass, humour, heart, and sophistication. The celebrated score, by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim, boasts one glorious hit after another, including: "Let Me Entertain You," "Some People," "You’ll Never Get Away from Me," "If Momma Was Married," "Everything’s Coming Up Roses," "You Gotta Get A Gimmick," and "Together Wherever We Go." Our production of Gypsy will feature Australian Musical Theatre Star Geraldine Turner as Momma Rose supported by an extremely talented local cast. Miss Turner is one of Australia’s most renowned musical theatre performers, having starred in shows including Chicago, Anything Goes and Guys and Dolls. She is a grande dame of the Australian stage. Amply endowed with both star power and staying power, she has been a redoubtable figure in the national footlights for as long as most of us can remember. DIRECTOR: RODNEY DELANEY MUSICAL DIRECTOR: ANDREA CLIFFORD CHOREOGRAPHER: JACQUELYN RICHARDS
ONE OF THE GREATEST MUSICALS EVER WRITTEN "I haven’t seen every musical ever written. I can only say that in my experience Gypsy is the best. Not one word is wasted, not one bit of business is unnecessary, evey moment is engaging. The score is brilliant, the characters are perfection." MARGE SIMPSON
"What makes this show so special is not that it just has a great book and a great score, but that they fit seamlessly together." ELIZABETH VINCENT
"Gypsy is an endlessly deep and textured masterpiece" EMILLIE LAMMORE

JUMP FIRST, ASK LATER IS A HIGH OCTANE MULTI AWARD-WINNING URBAN PORTRAIT OF THE STREETS OF WESTERN SYDNEY. This physically inspiring showcase of impressive strength and agility tells the stories of six young champions of Fairfield’s underground parkour and street style community. The performance combines street culture, parkour, breakdancing, gymnastics, kinaesthetics and martial arts, all of which bring you to the edge of your seat. Watching the crew moving around the stage you get a real sense of how their street view differs from that of the average Joe. We see a wall – they see a challenge. The performances explore the challenges and collective freedom these artists discovered by mapping their city through movement. Every flip, trick and drop of sweat is a celebration of the will to succeed. It’s a killer theatre experience about finding your path by jumping over life’s obstacles. However the flair and sparks that are created by these amazing feats of physical power and dexterity become almost secondary when you hear the stories behind it all. The performers share with you how they got into the art form and the personal challenges they overcame. Moments of humour and wit are mixed with adversity and hardship. The combination reveals honest and sincere people sharing their lives with the audience. Jump First, Ask Later is vibrant in its story telling. Set on a ship, bound for Australia, Belfast Girls tells the story of five of Earl Grey’s Irish ‘orphans’. In the 1850s thousands of Irish girls were given the chance to travel to Australia to escape the famine, and to find a better life under Lord Earl Grey’s ‘orphan scheme’. They were being sent to Australia as cheap labour, as indentured servants. These hopeful women arrived in Australia, looking for a chance to start fresh, only to be labeled whores and thieves. These extraordinary women are part of our history, helping to shape the Australia we know today.

FROM THE TEAM THAT BROUGHT YOU SHIRLEY VALENTINE AND ALWAYS... PATSY CLINE, NOW COMES A SHOW THAT’S BEEN A HIT IN 28 COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD. My Brilliant Divorce sees Mandi Lodge present a moving story about Angela, a woman who is trying to take charge after divorcing her lying, cheating husband. A divorce that shocked her... but everyone she knows, knew she was hurtling towards. With 1 in 3 Australian marriages ending in divorce, this is a highly relevant topic that is skilfully tackled by playwright Geraldine Aron. The West End Production of the show starred Dawn French and was nominated for a coveted Olivier Award as Best Entertainment. Mandi Lodge says “As with any upheaval, people can find funny things happen amongst the drama and it is those lighter moments that help us get through and find perspective. Our show is a humorous, heartfelt time in the theatre. It can also give people a chance to recognise the ups and downs of divorce and hopefully feel a bit better about those moments.” Deserted by her husband for a younger woman, Angela sets out to survive and enjoy a life on her own. Living in London, she is left to deal with an empty nest, a disapproving mother, a misogynist lawyer, some dubious counsellors, a bad case of hypochondria and the threat of poverty. Does Angela fight to keep her husband... or just move on? Angela is angry and confused, sometimes ready to feel joyfully liberated, other times hopeful for reconciliation and reluctant to sign the divorce papers. Told over the course of one weekend in a suburban Australian home, Spencer is the story of a tight-knit family that includes single-mum Marilyn and her three adult children — wayward daughter Jules, mouthy coulda-been Ben and AFL golden boy Scott. About to meet Spencer — the young son he never knew he had — Scott and the family have returned home to help mark the occasion. With the surprise appearance of Ian, the father they barely remember, the entire family is forced to work together to clean up both the house and their own fractured relationships as the clock ticks down to Spencer’s arrival. Starring Jane Clifton (Prisoner) and Roger Oakley
(Home & Away), and supported by Lyall Brooks,
Jamieson Caldwell and Fiona Harris, Spencer employs classic Australian vernacular, lashings of humour, and recognisable characters that ask us to consider how much our family defines who we are, if we can exist without them — and if we ever really grow up… WRITTEN BY: KATY WARNER DIRECTED BY: SHARON DAVIS DESIGNED BY: ROB SOWINSKI & BRYN CULLEN PRODUCED BY: ADAM FAWCETT CAST INCLUDES: LYALL BROOKS, JAMIESON CALDWELL, JANE CLIFTON, FIONA HARRIS AND ROGER OAKLEY A LAB KELPIE PRODUCTION

FRIENDSHIPS, FEUDS AND AFFECTION. Plans are afoot for a charity evening; a group of younger women are to come and give a fundraising performance for the ladies of the home. This event, and the arrival of a new resident, piques rivalries among the former greats as they rekindle memories from the past. Sheridan Morley wrote - 'the play has moments of nearChekhovian dignity and melancholy {as well as} insights into the processes of ageing for people who have made their careers out of youth.' Noël Coward was not only gifted but generous. He wrote 'Waiting in The Wings', his fiftieth play, with loving care and absolute belief in its characters. He said ‘I consider that the play as a whole contains, beneath the froth of some of its lighter moments, the basic truth that old age needn't be nearly so dreary and sad as it is supposed to be, provided you greet it with humour and live it with courage.’ Being a home full of former stars jealousies abound, especially between Lotta and May. A tragedy brings them to their senses and a new solarium brings out everyone’s good nature. This play is a gentle, humorous, moving exploration of the relationships between the women, the staff and others, and of the inevitable friendships, feuds, affection and bickering that arises when characters accustomed to centre stage are compelled to live as a community. What is not to like about this quirky Coward play that gives some of the regions most seasoned performers a chance to grace our stage! WRITTEN BY: NOËL COWARD DIRECTED BY: STEPHEN PIKE
A HUMOROUS AND MOVING STORY ABOUT FRIENDSHIP, COURAGE AND COMMUNITY LIVING "Coward was a playwright of superior taste, wit and feeling. Those attributes are amply displayed in Waiting in The Wings which gently skirts stereotypes and treads lightly outside the door of sentimentality — only occasionally poking its head in for a look" VARIETY
"A minor gem in that bittersweet mode at which Coward excelled. The play is a wise and compassionate address of the problems of aging and death that confront us all" JOHN SIMON
"Should rejoice those of us who still have hearts." LONDON NEWS CHRONICLE

IT’S THE PARTY OF THE SEASON AND EVERYONE IS INVITED! Catherine Alcorn’s fabulous homage to Bette Midler, swings back to into town for a Christmas Special. Whilst Alcorn has been tottering in Bette’s shoes for a while now, her show has been revamped and is bigger, better and even more impressive as she oozes charm and charisma channelling her idol. Catherine captures Miss Midler’s voice, both spoken and singing, replicating the cadence, tone and turn of phrase as well as capturing her comic facial expressions, flamboyant gestures and exuberant energy. Alcorn understands the ‘character’ so intimately that when the audience engagement gets lively she is able to respond without breaking character, throwing in quips and commentary on contemporary culture without missing a beat but also responding with honest amusement. Her stagecraft is such that she ensures that each member of the audience feels like they are being treated to an intimate experience as she engages with the audience. With lots of Miss Midler’s well known songs and wellpresented patter, Catherine Alcorn’s ‘The Divine Miss Bette’ is a must see performance. Her show is guaranteed to warm the coldest of Christmas Nuts and together with her live band she promises to jingle your bells and tickle your turkey. So polish off your Ornamental Balls folks and make Christmas 2019 one to remember with ‘The Divine Miss Bette’ because she’s ready to sleigh! Yule be a fool to miss it! PERFORMED IN THE BICENTENNIAL HALL, NEXT DOOR TO THE Q.

Adapted from the Gold Award-winning children’s book, THE GRUFFALO follows Mouse into the deep dark wood on the hunt for hazelnuts. Armed with just a nut map and a very vivid imagination, Mouse runs into the smirking, wheeler-dealer Fox; an eccentric, retired Woodland Air Force General Owl; and the maracashaking, party animal Snake. Rather than becoming the main course of their next meal, Mouse kills their appetites with stories of an imaginary monster friend. But what happens when Mouse comes face to face with the very creature she imagined? In a production that has become the toast of London’s West End, Tall Stories & CDP vibrantly reinvent this delightful tale through its signature style of bold, multifaceted storytelling. A trio of bright new performers fill the forest with colourful characters and toe tapping, sing-along songs. Audiences will be dazzled with brand new sets and costumes when the return season entices fans with the magic of the deep dark wood. The Australian production has attracted critical acclaim, with the Sydney Morning Herald calling it "funny, charming and smart... brings the house down", while the Courier Mail said "While your children are having a whale of a time... you will too!"
THE SHOW IS BEAUTIFUL AND THERE WASN’T A CHILD THERE WHO DIDN’T SEEM TO ENJOY THE PERFORMANCE "His whimsical, imaginative show is pitched at just the right level for three to seven-yearolds, as well as the big ones they have brought along with them... clever storytelling... enchanting characterisation... a rare treat that really is for all the family" THE SCOTSMAN
