THE Q SEASON 2020 | 1

THERE IS NO DENYING 2019 WAS A YEAR OF MIXED FORTUNES. Together with sold-out shows at the beginning of 2019, The Q, along with many other venues around the country, saw a number of shows cancelled for a variety of reasons. On behalf of all our staff, I apologise for any inconvenience you may have been caused. The factors affecting these cancellations vary and we can only hope they do not continue into 2020. On a brighter note, we participated in a national survey and rated very highly. This was helped enormously by the huge amount of support we received through the survey our patrons participated in. We ranked above the national average with customer satisfaction, and as one would suspect, your favoured genres are Musical Theatre and Contemporary Plays. A number of other genres were not far behind, which shows us our audience has a very diverse interest in the performing arts.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PROGRAM MANAGER

It is always with great anticipation that we look forward to presenting our Annual Season. It is something we work towards for up to two years in advance and seeing the reaction of our community to the wide range of theatre we have put together is the most exciting part of that journey. As with most years, our Season Shows are drawn from interstate as well as overseas and combining these with productions from closer to home I hope to have provided you with many favourable choices. In 2020 you will see the second production from our own company Echo Theatre who will present Wolf Lullaby. After seeking a relationship with The Hayes Theatre in Sydney for many years, we have finally cracked it and will have their critically acclaimed production of H.M.S. Pinafore to bring you lots of laughs. Four of Asia’s campest comedians will also be here in February to lift the spirits of those who enjoy unique humour. Tribute shows honouring some of your favourite entertainers from the past and some superb contemporary drama will also add to the mix. I am very happy to say that, without seeking it intentionally, you will find the relative gender balance within the combination of playwrights, directors and actors is pretty much even across the range of our season. Once again, I have endeavoured to provide you with a selection of shows that you will find both relevant and appealing. One which I hope will encourage you to Subscribe and Save or at minimum pay us a visit in 2020. We also have a variety of award-winning Children’s Shows and a trio of Morning Melodies that will not only entertain but take you on a nostalgic trip down memory lane. I hope that your experience with us in 2020 is a year of great entertainment. We look forward once again to you making the choice to SEE IT LIVE. SEE IT NOW.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE Q FOR PUTTING TOGETHER SEASON 2020. The Q continues to be a shining light in the region’s cultural and artistic offerings, and it looks like Season 2020 will be no exception.

Season 2020 has its share of the classics, with one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays Romeo and Juliet coming to The Q. The story will be brought to life by Everyman Theatre using a combination of the region’s best young talent and celebrated actors, and a quintessential Everyman twist. Another classic is a rendition of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, Jekyll & Hyde, which will be told in a way that is anything but traditional. Audiences should expect a fast paced, laugh-out-loud, hilarious and charming comedic take on the classic story. For the younger audiences, The Beanies, who are best known for their award-winning children’s podcast (The Beanies Imagination Station), stars company members who have previously appeared in shows produced by Council at The Q before going on to professional careers. Featuring confetti canons, sneaky robbers, and very silly jokes The Beanies EGG-straordinary Day is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for Mini-Beanies and their big people. The team at The Q have put together another fantastic season of entertainment; make sure you check out Season 2020.

MESSAGE FROM QUEANBEYAN-PALERANG REGIONAL COUNCIL’S MAYOR

After the fabulous success of the first show from The Q’s theatre company in 2019, Echo Theatre returns with Wolf Lullaby. Written by Australian playwright Hillary Bell, Wolf Lullaby tackles the disturbing subject of children as murderers, asking not only why it occurs but how do we deal with it?

A sea voyage A tragedy A love story

HELL SHIP In 1852, the emigrant vessel Ticonderoga limped into Port Phillip Bay after a nightmare voyage from England in which a quarter of her nearly 800 passengers and crew had died from typhus. As its victims — Scottish families seeking a new life — were buried hastily at sea, schools of sharks, it was said, followed the stricken vessel all the way across the Indian Ocean. When news of the ‘fever ship’ reached Melbourne, the city went into a panic. Typhus could wipe out a crowded city such as theirs — just the mention of the word filled people with dread. Special editions of the papers were printed to tell the grisly story of the ill-fated vessel to transfixed readers. Forbidden to come into port, Ticonderoga was forced to anchor near Portsea where her remaining passengers were either nursed back to health or allowed to die. In its day, the Ticonderoga was the most dramatic, most tragic true story of our maritime history. Today, however, the saga is largely forgotten as has been the story of the young ship’s surgeon who bravely nursed many of the sick passengers back to health. This man was Michael Veitch’s great-great-grandfather, James William Henry Veitch. Michael Veitch is renowned for his artful and tender characters and ability to transfix an audience with a sense of awe as they enter the world he so powerfully creates on stage.

A night of trailblazing queer comedy from across Asia

These four international comedy stars are the new sound of the Asian century. Breaking the rules and queering the mic from Mumbai to Manila, these out, proud and hilarious performers are furiously funny and hot, hot, hot. Spice Night features Singaporean Youtube star Hirzi Zulkiflie who has hundreds of thousands of social media followers and in the last eighteen months has hosted TV shows for BBC Studios/Channel 5 Singapore, and Comedy Central Asia; the Queen of Malaysian Comedy, Joanne Kam, one of the pioneers of comedy in the region who headlined Comedy Zone Asia for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2019; India’s only out gay stand-up, Navin Noronha — who has a hit podcast Keeping It Queer and comes to Australia direct from presenting his solo show The Good Child at the Bengalaru Comedy Festival; and Filipino-Australian Margot Tanjutco who was nominated for a Golden Gibbo award at the Melbourne Comedy Festival for her solo show Vanity Fair Enough. Coming from countries where homosexuality still is or until recently was criminalised, these jokers are sharp and salty, and pack more punch than a pound of pepper. It should be illegal to be this funny, not this gay. Spice up your night with the camp, cutting edge of global comedy.

Award winning director, Kate Gaul, makes her Hayes Theatre Co. debut with this re-imagined, gender-bending, hyper-theatrical and kinky take on this Gilbert & Sullivan classic.

AMERICAN SONG

...

IF ONLY YOU COULD FIND THE MOMENT THAT STARTED EVERYTHING

...

THEQ.NET.AU

As he builds a stone wall on his property, you will hear the anguished and bewildered voice of a man whose life has been shattered. Andy’s experience is common to many of us; the slow accumulation of a good life: love, work, friendship, family. But unforeseen events lead him to places he never imagined. As he heads off to work he wishes his teenage son Robbie goodbye. Eight hours later, everything has changed. The latest play from acclaimed Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith (Honour, Switzerland), American Song tackles the confronting and heartbreaking issue of gun violence, reaching beyond national or cultural borders in an intimate exploration of love, forgiveness and parental responsibility. With Murray-Smith’s characteristically deft wit and compassion she makes a difficult topic thoroughly gripping, wryly humorous and deeply moving. A profound tour-de-force for one actor, performed by Red Stitch ensemble member Joe Petruzzi, American Song asks: What could I have done differently? Can we ever know the moment when a good life turns irredeemably wrong?

Grace Under Pressure We need to care for them Beautifully staged this is a truly unique theatre experience

Health professionals are with us when we’re born, and they’re with us when we die. They devote their lives to caring for us, but how do we care for them? Can a doctor or nurse give a patient the best possible care if he or she hasn’t slept for days? What if they are also being bullied or sexually harassed at work? What if they complain about having to work excessive hours but are told to stop whinging and suck it up? How do they cope with the pressure? Based on hours of in-depth interviews with doctors and nurses about their experiences of training and working in hospitals, Grace Under Pressure is a surprising, intimate, and deeply moving theatre experience that reveals these hidden stories of health professionals in their own words. Ranging from wildly funny to utterly heartbreaking, the stories within Grace Under Pressure will leave no audience member unaffected. Beautifully staged and disarmingly performed, Grace Under Pressure is a truly unique theatre experience.

DON JUAN Comedy. Thrills. Chaos. Delight.

Don Juan will come to life before your very eyes. The cast display a riotous and mischievous energy armed with intentionally bad French accents. They are a charming and talented bunch. In a show with many pulsing moments the performances always feel ready and alive, as if waiting for an opportunity to steal the spotlight from one another (but failing because they’re all so evenly matched). The actors take turns to play Don Juan, personified by wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap. Audience members are given a gentle confidence so no one ever really feels in danger, but also leaving enough room for people to be surprised. The narrative moves spectacularly well. It embraces the audience-performer relationship and makes it transparent, creating a piece of theatre that could only ever be theatre and nothing else. But the best moments of the show simply do what the best of any theatre does. They ask us to suspend our disbelief even though we’re in on the lie. For those interested in a fun night out, you’d be hard pressed to find a better alternative. You’re unlikely to see anything quite like it.

ROMEO AND JULIET THERE NEVER WAS A TALE OF MORE WOE, THAN THAT OF JULIET AND HER ROMEO

“Two households, both alike in dignity…” What if your first true love was someone you’d been told to hate? Ripped apart by the bitter divisions of their parents, two young people will risk everything to be together. Tender and violent. Thrilling and tragic. Everyman Theatre is proud to present one of the most passionate stories ever told. Romeo and Juliet reminds us all of the audacious intensity with which we can love another — and of the bitter sting that can follow. One of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two young lovers torn between their budding romance and the age-old, war-like, family feud which threatens to tear their city apart at its seams. The lovers must navigate the tangled web of their own lies and deceits while maintaining the face of loyalty to their respective families. All of which comes to a head as mislaid messages and plans born of desperation swell to a crescendo in the most renowned death scene in classical theatre. This production will prove a more acerbic and visceral re-telling of the classic tale. With a combination of the region's best young talent and most celebrated actors under the direction of associate director Christopher Zuber, Everyman Theatre will bring the timeless tale of the Montagues and Capulets to life — with a quintessential Everyman twist.

Eddie Daniels

Nominated Most Versatile Variety Performer

BATTLE OF THE VOICES

Gene Pitney arrived on the scene in the late fifties as a gifted songwriter, capable musician and incredible singer. His dramatic tenor voice was among the more remarkable voices of the time. His Top 40 hits included: It Hurts To Be In love, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, 24 Hours From Tulsa, Every Breath I Take and many more. Roy Orbison was perhaps the most unlikely sex symbol of the 1960s. He dressed like an insurance salesman and was famously lifeless during his performances, but what Orbison did have, was one of the most distinctive, versatile and powerful voices in pop music world wide. In the words of Elvis Presley, Orbison was simply "the greatest singer in the world." Pretty Woman, Crying, Mystery Girl, Leah, Penny Arcade, Blue Bayou and Falling were among his many hits. The music of both artists was entwined and in 1967 fate would bring them together at Detroit airport. They managed to spend 15 minutes together in an airport coffee shop. They never met again, both artists dying of heart failure way too young. Eddie Daniels is without doubt one of the finest tribute artists in Australia today. Critics have hailed him a “Master Showman” and the “King of Cabaret”. With an incredible vocal range of over 3 octaves and the ability to re -create the vocal sounds of the greatest singers from the 60s, Eddie Daniels is unique! He is able to move his audience through the music of Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney, giving them that unmistakable “goose bump and shiver down the spine feeling” that you get from experiencing something very, very special.

MOTHER & SON A NOSTALGIC AND HILAROUS TRIP DOWN LOSS OF MEMORY LANE

Geoffrey Atherden penned the first episodes of Mother & Son in 1984 creating an instant classic. Many years later he has done it again! Julie McGregor and Christopher Truswell will take on the roles made famous by Ruth Cracknell and Garry McDonald in this nostalgic trip down “loss-of-memory lane”. Mother & Son reinvigorates a treasured Australian comedy icon with Atherden’s distinctive brand of acerbic wit, mixing together the sweet, the sharp, the savage and the sad in Maggie and Arthur’s complex, dysfunctional relationship. This freshened version of the beloved Logie Award-winning show finds long-suffering second son Arthur Beare hoping for the chance to finally take his new flame Anita away on a little holiday. Vague but vicious and more arsenic than old lace, Maggie would have Arthur tied to her apron strings for life — if she could just remember where she put that apron! His only chance for a break, however, involves recruiting help from his successful but selfish brother Robert — but the firstborn favourite has enough on his hands. The philandering dentist has been doing distinctly unhygienic things with his hygienist — and when his wife finds out, Arthur’s troubles double as Robert lands on the doorstep. It doesn’t help that manipulative Maggie is in fine form and sabotaging Arthur’s chances of romance at every turn.

Wolf Lullaby When Children kill

A play that asks 'Is there intrinsic evil in the world?' THEQ.NET.AU

A small country town… A horrible crime… An unimaginable suspect… “If you touch someone, so your fingerprints stay on their skin? If you drag someone really hard, do your nails stay in them? Does their skin come off on you? Does it? Mum? Does it?” In a bleak, remote town, a small child is murdered. Suspicion falls on 9-year-old Lizzie. Convinced her daughter is guilty, Lizzie's young mother must make the torturous choice between ignoring her intuition and presenting Lizzie to the police. Lizzie is not the only one who is changed forever by the act. The adults around her, bewildered and full of denial, find their accepted beliefs crumbling around them in a play which explores the sources of violence and its legacy. Written by award winning Australian playwright Hillary Bell, Wolf Lullaby premiered at Griffin Theatre in 1996, and won the Jill Blewett Playwright’s Award in 1998. Directed by Jordan Best (Belfast Girls, Playhouse Creatures, The Mousetrap, Switzerland), and featuring some of our regions top actors, Echo Theatre’s Wolf Lullaby will move and intrigue audiences, asking the question — when a child commits an act of terrible violence, who is really responsible?

A delightfully amusing and poignant play about the nature of marriage, the pursuit of happiness and the perfect foxtrot!

Wallflowering is a play with a gentle heart, insight and plenty of warm humour.

SEE IT LIVE. SEE IT NOW.

Cliff and Peg are a married couple who've always fitted together comfortably but now find themselves out of step with life and each other.

27 - 29 AUGUST

Playwright Peta Murray draws astonishing parallels between the structure of a troubled marriage and the structure of the moves a couple makes on the dance floor. Peg and Cliff were once prize-winning ballroom dancers, and the story is interspersed with ballroom dancing by a younger couple who represent them not only in their glory days but also their older idealised view of themselves.

NON-SUBSCRIBER TICKETS Adult $65.00 Conc. & Groups 8+ $60.00 Under 25 $27.00

While most women should be able to identify with Peg's yearnings on some level, it's Cliff whose needs turn out to be more complex and compelling. Peg is no longer content to quietly and unquestioningly follow her husband. She wants to lead and sees possibilities and excitement in change while realising this may cause them to be out of step with each other. There is great comedy and pathos in the exploration of Cliff and Peggy's "ordinary" lives, and the audience are transported to a glorious vision of our champions as perfectly synchronised and extraordinary people. When all is said and danced, Wallflowering emerges as an intelligent, romantic fable, an honest yet hopeful tale that shows it's possible for two people to stay in step with each other even when they're dancing to different rhythms.

BILLY JOEL THE STORY & SONGS OF

People everywhere had their feet tapping or were singing along!

More than just a Piano Man, Billy Joel is a living legend of the music industry with a catalogue of hit songs spanning nearly 50 years. The singer/songwriter has not only fascinating stories behind his music, but also compelling stories behind the man himself. Anthony Mara and some of the finest musicians around present a powerful show that will mesmerise audiences with all the classic Billy Joel hits such as: Piano Man, New York State of Mind, Honesty, Uptown Girl plus many more. The show includes an excellent lighting plot along with audio visual footage and narration. Mara is not an impersonator. He’s not pretending to be the piano man, rather paying tribute to one of music’s most awarded artists. The show reflects on his incredible 45-year career which still sees the legend selling out concert after concert at Madison Square Garden. It’s an awesome show, made more incredible by the fact that Mara is actually fighting multiple sclerosis. You wouldn’t know, as he energetically struts around the stage, swinging his microphone stand in true Billy style. “Singing Billy Joel songs is a pretty good form of medicine,” Mara tells us. Part of the proceeds from the show go towards MS research, a cause Mara is understandably passionate about.

When eleven-year-old Juniper May receives a petition signed by her entire class stating that she is ‘the most hated person in the school’ her life is thrown into complete meltdown. Finally, after exhausting all other avenues, her parents resort to the only thing they have left, a giant singing robot.

CHILDREN'S SHOWS

19 - 22 AUGUST

Based on a true story, Robot Song illustrates the profound, transformative nature of creativity that when combined with unconditional love, becomes an unstoppable force. For Juniper, creativity opens doors into places she never knew existed, allowing her, for the first time, to be defined on her own terms.

ALL TICKETS Adult $27.00 Children $22.00 Groups 4+ $20.00

Robot Song is a deeply personal story. It shares an honest, intensely funny and often unconventional window into writer/director Jolyon James’ experience parenting a child on the Autism Spectrum.

AUDIENCE ADVICE 60mins, no interval. Suitable for children 8+ and their adults.

The show poses and attempts to answer the question, how do we support, foster and celebrate difference in our children in the face of an increasingly rigid and homogenised world? Robot Song is a genuine family show. It is joyful and full of hope. It is for any child who has ever felt isolated or pushed to the margins and any parent desperate for tools to help.
