To be considered, a student’s parent must have been a member of the Association for three consecutive years, including the year the student makes the application. The WPOA also sponsors a Student Ambassador program, involving a junior and senior high school student interested in helping the WPOA fulfill its Village government role. Eyewitness to History: An 1879 Visit To Garden City
BY JOHN ELLIS KORDES Imagine you could travel back in time and visit Garden City in 1879. What would you see? Certainly not the mature village we know today covered in large trees and gardens. No, instead you would find a village in its infancy laid out on the dusty barren Hempstead Plains with only a hand full of people living there. What follows is an actual eyewitness account of such a visit in the spring of 1879. It is from an architectural magazine who sent the writer to visit Garden City to comment on the construction of the Cathedral of the Incarnation. Before beginning his account of his visit, here is a little background to set the story. In the spring of 1869, after his appointment by President Grant to be Secretary of the Treasury failed due to his vast wealth and real estate holdings, Alexander T. Stewart returned to New York City. His architect, John Kellum, told Stewart about the sale of the vast treeless Hempstead Plains stretching from Floral Park to Bethpage on Long Island. Stewart purchased it in cash that September for $55 an acre. Stewart, together with Kellum, began to lay out his own city. The first ten houses (yes, it was ten) went up in 1872 (we know the remaining six as “Apostle” houses). In 1873, the first railroad station was built and in 1874, the first Garden City Hotel opened. Along Hilton Avenue two large buildings were built in the mid-1870’s and were Garden City’s first stores. Also, thousands of small trees and shrubs were planted along the geometrically
1879 there was a lull in Garden City’s development except for work being done on the Cathedral and St. Paul’s. So the tone the writer takes is understandable however misguided. So here we go back to 1879...
Garden City’s first railroad station from 1873 located where today there is a bust of Stewart. It was replaced with the current station in 1898. It was from this station the writer stepped off. laid out streets around the hotel. Suddenly on April 10, 1876, A.T. Stewart died in his Fifth Avenue mansion in New York City. He never lived in Garden City. Several years earlier John Kellum had died. Garden City seemed doomed. However, just days after his death his wife, Cornelia, (they did not have children) announced plans for a memorial Cathedral to be built in Garden City in memory of her husband along with a school for boys (St. Paul’s) and a school for girls (St. Mary’s). This became the Seat of the Episcopal Church on Long Island. Garden City now had a permanent reason for existing. Work soon began on the Cathedral and nine years later in 1885 it would be completed at a cost of over one million dollars. The construction received national attention yet still Garden City appeared as an oddity

on the Hempstead Plains as very few people lived here. Okay, so that is the scene as this man arrives in Garden City on that Spring day in 1879. His reference to a “Hygia” and “sanitarium” was typical as the “media” of the day tried to make sense of what Stewart was attempting. He was a commercial genius and had created the concept of the department store. He was one of the wealthiest men in the world and knew that “A.T. Stewart & Co.” would disappear when he died. So, toward the end of his life he had put his energies into creating his legacy, his Garden City. It would grow and develop long after he was gone. The media of the day saw it only as a bad idea and as a real estate venture - a failure. Today we live in Stewart’s successful legacy - Garden City. However, in

The late A. T. Stewart’s Hygia has pretensions to be something more than a sanitarium. It is a suburb, a sanitarium and a cathedral town, all made at once and all made to order. It should, therefore, have an economic and an architectural interest, in addition to its sanitary interest. I have found it to possess an interest quite unique. As a commercial undertaking there was a presumption against Garden City, which Mr. Stewart undertook to overthrow, the presumption namely, that if a place had been eminently adapted for human habitation, it would, long before his purchase, have been inhabited. It is two hundred years since a traveler set forth that ‘toward the middle of the island lyeth a plain, sixteen miles long and four miles broad, upon which plain growth very fine grass that maketh exceeding good hay.’ The plain and the grass have been there ever since, and moreover the plain is part of a region that would delight a railway engineer limited to a very low ‘first cost’. There is some undulation in the country as far from the East River as Jamaica, to which point the Long Island Railroad has run for many years, and

Document cameras, iPads, digital cameras, a Nearpod and heart rate monitors for PE classes at Stewart School are some of the valuable equipment purchases that will encourage, stimulate, and enhance creative instruction district wide. PARENTS’ GUIDE TO GARDEN CITY By Rikki Massand Garden City is known in the tristate area as a family community. As the daily lives of parents and children evolve, so have family-centric programming and businesses in the village. From Parks and Recreation to the local library, new family resources have sprung up while established centers cater more towards parents looking for quality enrichment and activities for their children. Here's a look at innovative ideas for Garden City parents. GARDEN CITY VILLAGE PARKS AND RECREATION Sandra Young, program coordinator for the Department of Parks and Recreation, says variety is the name of the game. For example, a multitude of dance classes for children 3 through 18 are held at Cluett Hall on the St. Paul's campus. The youngest ballerinas start with creative movement and for ages 4 and up, Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz and Tap are offered as combo classes or individual sessions.
Like most dance studios, an end-ofschool-year recital takes place as a grand finale. Besides a full-service dance lineup, Garden City Parks and Recreation branched out from traditional sports and aimed for a well-rounded program to appeal to families. Cluett Hall hosts a gamut of fun ways to learn. "We're always trying to do things that are fun for the kids but are still informative, instructional and healthy. Way back when everything was just sports I found that some parents would say their kids don't play sports. I started researching and we came up with science, yoga for kids, and other activities. Kids that aren't into athletics have cultural and science-type things to do. In the summer we even have computer classes," Young said. In the past few years, Garden City Rec. evolved into a local leader for complimentary S.T.E.M- subject education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). During the school year Mad Science classes and "Bricks for Kids" LEGO are offered as after-school activities. With a break-
down of sessions from six to eight weeks, once a week, science started up five years ago while LEGO came to the village three years ago. "We hired someone to come in from the Mad Science program, and we've probably been doing those for at least five years. We run after school plus a summer program with them too for five weeks, with a different topic each week, ranging from 'Crazy ChemWorks' to Advanced Robotics. And LEGO is now everywhere and it has
become a big thing with these amazing models children come up with," Young explains. In summer Rec. offers a preschool arts camp for 3.5 to 5 year olds as well. Cluett Hall is also the venue for special Rec. Department events such as movie nights, a magic show or a theatrical stage production for kids. "We do those during the winter for families to come to provide them with an option to do on a Sunday or during holiday and winter breaks (Decem-

At the Fieldhouse, Garden City Rec. hosts its own programs and works in conjunction with area youth groups, sports leagues and associations. The facility is generally in use on weekdays from 3 pm to 10 pm. "For children from kindergarten up through high school we run programs at the gym. Either our staff will be running games for them and doing activities or older kids have open play, still monitored. It's strictly for children to participate but parents can come to watch. We want kids to be kids and have fun with their friends, with our staff supervising," Young said. Also inside the fieldhouse Rec. Staff runs a "Pee Wee Sports Sampler" for kids 4-5 over eight weeks, once a week during winter. Each week a different sport is featured to get an introduction. In summer Rec. runs camps at the fieldhouse for indoor sports like vol-
leyball and basketball, with instruction tailored for students in grades one through six. Sports groups like the GCAA and Centennials and lacrosse have time reserved to hold practices and clinics in the fieldhouse. The outdoor fields of Garden City are considered some of Long Island's most coveted for their location and quality. Each weekend they are packed with Garden City soccer, baseball and lacrosse groups - highlighted by games and major tournaments throughout the year. The grounds stay active in summer as the village Rec. runs its own baseball and lacrosse camps while the U.S. Sports Institute runs a multi-sport camp. With a look at the 2015 season, Young says popularity keeps growing and many families enjoy one or more of the village's offerings. "We can be running anywhere between five and eight different camps a week every week, in all our facilities during the summer. We had one week of soccer camp that went over 200 kids for the week," Young said. The tennis bubble has been another

PARENTS’ GUIDE TO GARDEN CITY strong draw for the Rec. department with instruction in the school year and summer camps. For fall and winter Rec. offers 10 weeks of lessons, one hour a week, for ages 4 through 18. The sessions run from September to Christmas and again January through March. After that a spring session is held over six weeks. A four-day tennis camp is offered for every skill level in summers, up until the third week in August. There's also a tryout program for a village tennis team (ages 9 to 18) that plays matches throughout the school year, November to April, against teams from other municipalities and some private clubs. Matches are held on weekends, and tryouts take place each October. The Garden City Pool has long been a staple of the village, even a reason some families moved to the village. Assistant Superintendent for Parks and Recreation Ed Fronckwicz calls it "the community meeting place" for summers. Swimming lessons for groups of up to 10 kids, ages 6 and older, are available at the pool. The sprinkler park is
a state-of-art, 100-percent safe water play center. Younger children can spend much time entertaining themselves with it. "It's an interactive feature where kids turn things on and off, slide water and squirt different things, and it allows them to play on their own," Fronckwicz says. He added that arts and crafts projects are offered on select days at the pool, with instruction from a staff member. "Tuesdays and Wednesdays we do a teens and tots story time in cooperation with the Garden City Public Library Young Adults, held in afternoons for 45 minutes to an hour. The teens come read to younger kids. Movies are on Tuesday nights, and we generally get family movies just out of the theaters before they go on DVD. Every once in a while we throw in a movie that was a throwback or classic from 25 to 30 years ago. For kids it's a lot different to see films at home and to see them on a theater-style screen," he said. Music on Sunday afternoons often adds to the lively ambiance of
the pool. With planned upgrades for 2016, the Rec. department (and the Village Board) hopes that a recent trend continues and families continue to join the pool as members and participate in the good times and community-building. KIDVILLE Christina Glorioso, owner of Garden City's Kidville at 960 Franklin Avenue, opened a new learning and activity center in 2014 after she experienced a class with her son Chase in Manhattan a few years ago. A good portion of Kidville's teachers are mothers who spend their time teaching while their kids are in school. Many families with younger kids heard good reviews of Kidville from friends and relatives. Parents to grandparents have brought kids to try classes at Kidville, and word has gotten out nicely. "I always love to see when a class finishes, the moms who weren't friends
before the class started connect to each other and make plans to meet for playdates or coffee, or go for a run. It's really fun to watch families get to know other families," she says. This year Kidville added "Mess Lab" to its lineup of classes. Glorioso describes it as a combo "art-science" class for kids 2.5 to 3 years old to begin understanding science and the world around them. "We offered it in spring and along the same lines we have two classes for older kids called 'Construction Junction' and 'Savvy Scientists and 'Awesome Engineers.' It's where art meets science as kids get to do experiments, learn about different materials and create great things," she says. With Construction Junction materials and projects from around the globe are introduced. The key concepts can help lay a foundation for the new S.T.E.A.M. focus in education, with art taking a place as a priority with more technical disciplines in math and science. venient location on Franklin Avenue, and the clean, safe facility. Unlimited makeup classes are available for monthly members, creating yet more flexibility for families. Kidville changed its pricing formats from a semester basis to monthly prices. The cost changed from $480 per semester to a more flexible $125 per month fee for classes, plus a heavy discount: just $50 additional per month for either a second class or enrolling a sibling. The early results speak volumes as in September 2015 Kidville saw about 70 new families register. Parents and kids often gravitate to the offer of a second class, making Kidville a bigger part of their activities in Garden City. There's another bonus to more Kidville classes: members who take two or more classes get unlimited access to the playspace and gym. Twice a day on weekdays the gym is open for free play. The winter is an ideal time to find a place for kids to run around and get exercise. "It's much easier to make Kidville part of your regular schedule. Given that we offer so many types of classes - science, art, gym, music and dance - the kids get familiar with the place and take up other classes," Glorioso explains. "I feel that it's beneficial to them in this rat race we are living in. It's just go, go, go and Garden City is a very competitive community. It's their time to check in with themselves and see where they are at, and parents can do the same. If parents come with their children and practice yoga with their children, it gives them a different connection in their lives," she says. Samudra Yoga started its second teen program for the fall, with a 'teen fly' workshop on the fundamentals of balancing and poses set for October 24. Kids' classes are now being considered for winter. Small class sizes at the studio lend to an attentive teaching style. "We want the community that we're a place to come as a family," she said. But keeping kids busy and outside gets a little carried away, and I think we end up with a 'catch-22' of wanting what's best for them," she explains. It may also become hard for children to spend time by themselves with so much on their schedules. Erhardt, who has daughters ages 14 and 11, helps her children focus on just one sport each aside from school work. In an age of specialization, she encourages them to pursue only what interests them the most. Both kids play soccer and Erhardt says her yoga training helps them with strength-building, stretching and flexibility. Also, both girls have asthma and she says yoga has helped them breathe more efficiently and move more effectively. In October Samudra Yoga starts a program to help runners learn "to run more effectively through aligning their bodies and finding their breath" Erhardt said. She says this idea came up in preparation for the annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving.
But to compliment that physical aspect, yoga provides mental restoration, grounding and a sense of calm no matter the other activities. "You have to reset, and that can only happen through unplugging. For some kids, time without phones creates an anxiety attack - they don't know what to do with themselves. Where can you really go and spend an hour and fifteen minutes unplugged from these devices? If you're in an elevator there's a TV, if you pump gas there's a TV. Coming into the yoga classroom you give those up for that time and then it becomes a practice, then something you crave and a really great habit," Erhardt says. Yoga has been part of her life for 28 years, and for much of that time as a compliment to a rigorous, five-mile a day running schedule Erhardt kept up until past age 40. She's 51 now, bringing to Garden City her practice and core beliefs with yoga as a part of a healthy lifestyle for busy parents. "We're running around, working, going to soccer games, and more. We have to be active as parents and we have to take care of ourselves, but

GARDEN CITY LIBRARY PROGRAMS Recently yoga even caught on as kids' programming at the Garden City Public Library, where a full slate of activities are offered year-round. GCPL offers story times grouped into the following categories, for which registration required in the fall and spring, but not summer: 'Lapsit' (children 6-17 months), Mother Goose (children 18-29 months), Toddlers (children 2 1/2- 3 1/2), Little Listeners (children 3-5, but not in kindergarten), Pajama Storytime (for children ages 3-6), Kindergarten story time and First Grade story time. Book discussions are offered for children in grades 2 to 5 and parent/ child book discussions for children in grades 4 and 5, "with parents or special adults." I have had to help plan 3 funerals, all in dif ferent fun SMOLENSKI, Jr. eral homes. This time, I decided to ask my parish church, for a reference. Th ough the woman who answered my call sai d that all the local homes were good, she told me that she had used Ne w Hyde Park for both of her parents and had been very happy. I unde rstand fully why she return ed to them. From my first phone call up to the interment at the cemetery, I was treated with complete, unconditional respect and compassion. Th e facility was spacious, clean and cozy with ample parking in the back. The staff arranged not only the wa ke, but the church service and, since I already owned a plot at Pinelawn Memorial Cemetery, the paper work at the cemetery. My only respo nsibilities were clothing my husband, Ron, and finding pictures of ou r life so that THEY could sca n them onto a CD for their electr onic picture screen at the wake. My hu sband was sick for a long time and his face sho wed the toll he had taken . I was not sure that I should have an open cas ket. Rene could not have done a better job in preparing him for the vie wing if he had known him in his prime. He looked like himself, peaceful and healthy, as if he truly was sleeping and just about to wake an d stand up. I'm pretty sur e the tears I shed when I first saw him were tears of joy. The pallbearers we re the most professional I have ever see n. They approached the cas ket with complete respect, compassion and military for m. The casket was carried on their shoulders in perfect un ison. They were dignified and quiet thr ough the entire service. The driver of the hearse was also am azing. He keep the procession of about 10 ve hicles together safely. He had a good sense of when the lights would tur n red and stopped at the green, allowing them to tur n in order for us all to go thr ough together, saf ely and legally. Though I hope that the occasion do es not arise soon for me to use their services again, I will most definite ly return to New Hyde Pa rk Funeral Home if it does. They are a class A+ establishment. Eyewitness to History: Riding along with Charles Lindbergh
BY JOHN ELLIS KORDES As a historian it is always valuable to find an eyewitness account of a story, not as a sole source, but as a key ingredient when doing research. What follows is an extraordinary account of one of the most famous events of the 20th century through the eyes of a 13 year old boy. His name was Ned Scott and he and his 13 year old best friend, Crawford Robertson, found themselves in the right place at the right time and they would never forget what they saw back on that fateful morning. This account, written by Ned many years later for his children, was given to me by Crawford Robertson in the early 1990’s. As far as I know, this account has never been published before. Charles Lindbergh, at age 25, taking off from Roosevelt Airfield on May 20, 1927, on the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean is well documented. As is the fact that he stayed at the old Garden City Hotel the night before. However, what was not known was how Lindbergh got from the hotel to the airfield that rainy May morning. Now, for the first time, here is how it happened from someone who was actually right there, Ned Scott... In 1927 the airfields near New York were three closely-grouped, private and military unpaved fields just to the east of Garden City on Long Island. (There was no commercial aviation to speak of, unless you counted taking people up for a few minutes at $5 per person.) Curtiss and Roosevelt Fields were contiguous but one was a couple of feet higher than the other so you couldn’t combine them for one long runway. Mitchell Field was an Air Force base, a mile of so away to the southeast. In early 1927 there were at least four planes at Curtiss Field (named for Glenn Curtiss, a pioneer aviator and airplane manufacturer in Garden City), preparing to try for the Orteig Prize, $25,000 (the U.S. president’s salary then) for the first non-stop New York to

We lived a few miles away and after school we’d ride our bikes to Curtiss Field (Roosevelt had no hangers) and watch the activity which was mostly
parked planes being checked. I remember getting Rasche’s autograph. All were waiting for the rain to stop and a favorable weather prediction, since those early planes could not fly “above the weather”. There was one weather “expert” in New York (Paul Krick, I believe), but without weather balloons and radio beacons, “expertise” was mostly guesswork. One evening the word came that the

weather conditions were about as good as they could ever expect. Admiral Byrd, who had a professional crew of pilot and navigator and a big (for those days) Bellanca, was in New York City speaking at a banquet and wouldn’t leave. Lindbergh, however, was ready. About 11 or 12 o’clock, after we were all asleep, our phone rang. It was the man across the street, George Robertson, former top race-car driver (first American to win the Vanderbilt Cup Race in 1908) who worked for the Lincoln Motor Car Company. For publicity they provided courtesy cars for various celebrities, movie stars, politicians, etc. His son was my closest friend, with whom I’d ridden by bicycle to Curtiss Field to watch the planes being readied. Our parents were close friends too. Mr. Roberston told my father “Lindbergh’s ready to take off and we’ll drive him from his hotel to the airfield. Would you and Ned (my nickname) like to come along? Of course we would! We drove to the Garden City Hotel. The lobby was quite active with newspaper reporters dashing back and forth, etc. I saw Lindbergh stride by, eating a sandwich. Finally, he was ready and we all got into the Lincoln 7-passenger limousine, Frank Tichenor, publisher of Aero Digest magazine, James (Bunny) Ayres, a professional chauffeur for Lincoln, Lindbergh and we four. Mr. Robertson introduced everyone, including us boys of age 13. Lindbergh was deep in his own thoughts, but reached over his shoulder to shake hands with us. The field was five minutes away. His plane was hangered without fuel, probably due to fire regulations. Mechanics were making last minute checks and Lindbergh joined them. After a while, Mr. Robertson came out to where we kids were standing and handed each of us an autograph, “C.A. Lindbergh”, on a scrap of stiff paper or cardboard, probably the last he signed before taking off. Finally, all was ready. They rolled the plane out and towed it across Curtiss Field to Roosevelt Field where a lon-
