We sell gently used and new: jewelry (fine and costume) * fine crystal (Steuben, Waterford & Tiffany, etc.) and china * home décor & furniture * silver * artwork. (No clothing).

How does consignm ent work? Consignment is resale of merchandise, at less-than-new prices, with consignors being paid 50% of the selling price for their items. If you did that consistently, earning a 7% average annual return, that modest amount could add up to more than $51,000 in 20 years, approximately $117,600 in 30 years, and more than $248,500 in 40 years. Small steps to help strengthen your financial foundation

There are some impressive structures to look at as one is driving from Cherry Valley Avenue onto Eleventh Street: beautiful homes, the Waterworks and The Garden City Historical Society’s A.T. Stewart building. There is an equally impressive home tucked away on the right side at 104 Eleventh Street that one might miss if they’re admiring the view on the left.

Olive Frances Tjaden (pronounced “jod den”) designed and built her home on a rise at 104 Eleventh Street. It’s a “French Chateau” style with a Tudor feel, with Belgian bricks on the facade. She had plenty of room to enjoy a suite by herself and also have large accommodations for her parents to live with her. The house served as an advertisement to all Tjaden’s friends and acquaintances of her talent and ability as an architect. Olive had par

ties and charity events on the lovely grounds for groups such as the Zonta Club, Cornell alumni and the Sunday School children of the Cathedral of the Incarnation, some of whom she taught. People admired the interior details with all the thought and planning that went

into such a magnificent house. What’s even more impressive about the home is that Olive Tjaden built it in 1928, at the age of 24. She was in business for only three years at that point.

The road to becoming an architect was quite a fast tra jectory. In 1904, Olive was born into a family of archi tects and builders. She grew up in Brooklyn and Queens, graduated from Jamaica High School in 1921 and subse quently earned her bachelor’s degree in architecture from the prestigious Cornell University by 1925, which should have

taken her five years to com plete. She was the only female in the program, typical for the time. After graduation, Tjaden worked for Richard T. Childs architecture company in Mineola for two years. She then opened an office at 109 Seventh Street in Garden City. Continuing in that same vein, she was awarded membership in the American Institute of Architects before the age of 30, being the only woman member for decades. By 1936, she had designed over 600 homes and commercial build ings in Garden City and other nearby towns. She worked with

various builders and develop ers including the Garden City Company. The following year, she re-designed the former Gallant mansion on Stewart Avenue into the new location of the Garden City Community Church (since razed and across Whitehall Boulevard from the current one).

Tjaden loved designing homes and had a special mar keting ability that men didn’t use: she knew what would appeal to women in homes, such as wider closets, book nooks, arched doorways and stained glass. Olive realized that women would be spend ing most of their time in their homes, so she wanted to make it a place of happiness for them. She remained femi nine in a man’s profession but succeeded in getting commis sions through her female con tacts. Men underestimated the “women’s connection.”

According to the Olive Tjaden home list that Bill Bellmer, current Garden City Village Historian, organized, there were 209 designs for new houses that we are aware of, as of April 2019. It has been reported that Tjaden designed over 400 homes in town. (It’s

a mystery where the other ones are.) The new home con struction averaged $16,00 0 to build, with a low of $5,00 0 to $50,00 0 for the impressive 250 Stewart Avenue.

162 Tjaden-designed homes are in the Estates sec tion, which is almost 80% of her known homes in Garden City. The Estates section was just being developed at that time. 44 are in the Eastern section, two are in the Central section and one is in the Western section, for a total of 209 houses. 66 Poplar was the first permit Olive obtained in 1926 when she was only 22. Her last building permit for Garden City was 11,12,14 and 15 Heath Place, all on the same day in 1941 when she was 37 years old.

During Tjaden’s time in Garden City, her designs of the 1920s were various styles, but mostly large, distinctive Tudor and colonial homes with stained glass windows, some times a balcony in front and using a combination of stone and brick on their facades, such as 176 Kilburn Road and 250 Stewart Avenue. Inside, there were sweeping stair cases and special touches. Her 1930s and 1940s designs during the Depression and after featured more clean lines, usually in brick, with out the stained glass, as in 110 and 112 Stratford Avenue. She also designed most of

the homes on that block (Nassau Boulevard and Euston Road between Stewart and Stratford Avenues). (Arthur McKenna, who lived at 36 Wellington Road worked with her on some of the homes as an assistant.) Altogether, she designed more than 2,00 0 residential and commercial buildings on Long Island.

Olive Tjaden’s tenure came to an end in Garden City when she married Carl Johnson of Florida in 1945. Together, they lived in Fort Lauderdale and she continued to design the more modest and mid-century modern homes popular at the time, as in the architecture of 530 NE Eleventh Street, Fort Lauderdale. It was a strategic move on her part during the explosive post-WWII develop ment in Florida. She designed more commercial buildings

as well. The marriage lasted almost 25 years, until Carl unjustly claimed some of her designs were his; they divorced in 1969

In her last 20 years of her life, Olive remained in Fort Lauderdale and married for the second time in 1978 to Roswell Charles Van Sickle, an inventor. She contribut ed a large donation for the refurbishment of a building at Cornell University, which was renamed in her honor in 1981. It was called Olive Tjaden Hall. She was also honored with the naming of the Van Sickle Art Gallery, also at Cornell. Tjaden passed away at 92.

Silva about the history of Silva’s Painting, and the cost and rewards of being a professional Painting Contractor in New York.

How did Silva’s Painting start?

Silva’s Painting brings four generations of quality work to all of our clients. It all started with a young Jose Russo who purchased some basic equip ment, and thus began his journey as a painter. Being a business owner sometimes means working around the clock, but when I see the satisfaction on my clients’ faces after seeing their completed job, it all becomes worth it!

If I could give advice to anyone starting a business, it would be this: pour yourself into your passion and re member that the more energy you put in, the more you will achieve. Be patient while striving for success and try to enjoy the process.

The Garden City Central Property Owners Association (CPOA) is a civic organization that represents the residents of the Central section of the Village in the governmental structure estab lished by the Community Agreement of 1919. The Central section is geographically defined to in clude residents west from Franklin Avenue and east from Rockaway Avenue and extends north to south in accordance with the village bound aries. The mission of the CPOA is to provide a forum for

Central section residents to hear issues direct ly affecting the village from the central section trustees and various board and committee mem bers.

Central section residents can bring concerns or issues to the attention of the CPOA Board and their respective trustees in order to obtain assis tance in resolving those issues.

Purpose

To encourage better upkeep of the community, secure adequate police and fire protection, main tain better roads and lighting, promote harmony, friendliness and friendship among neighbors. The POA also provides a platform for candi dates who wish to pursue election to Village and School District positions.

The WPOA looks to remain our residents’ link to Village government, continuing a working relationship with Village trustees, administra tors and staff and bringing residents’ questions and concerns to the appropriate people and departments.

The WPOA participates in the Village-wide POA Student Ambassador program, involving junior and senior high school students interested in learning about Village government and the role of its residents. Students who would like to be involved in the program are encouraged to

Since 1945, the Garden City Parent Teacher Association has been dedicated to serving children and families in our community. Today’s Garden City PTA is a network of parents, teachers, adminis trators and community members devoted to the educational, social and emotion al success of children. Our commitment to creating a collaborative environment where families and the school community can work together fosters positive change in our schools and within our community. Together, we are a powerful voice for all our children, a relevant resource for our families and a strong advocate for public education.

Through our annual membership drive and fundraising efforts, we are able to pro vide cultural programs, speaker engage ments, health and safety programs, mone tary awards to high school seniors and so much more. Many of our events and pro grams have become long-standing tradi tions in our schools and for our students. Our grants have enhanced the educational experience for students in each of our seven schools. The Friends of the Garden City Public Library is celebrating its 70th anniversary! Established in 1952, it was very instrumental in the founding of our Village Library. Since then, the Friends have continued to provide financial support and other assistance to enhance its services and resources to the Garden City Community.

With the help of the library director and the librarians, the Friends explores patron- friendly opportunities. Currently, these include pro grams for children, young adults and adults. Celebrations for Young Adults, cooking lessons from the Baking Coach, science classes by Chris Buchman, lectures by art historians — these are just a few of the 57 programs that are typically

financed annually by the Friends. All of the Museum Passes, which allow village patrons of all ages to enter MoMA, Old Westbury Gardens, the Long Island Children’s Museum, the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, The Nassau County Firefighters Museum, the Nassau County Museum of Art, the Cradle of Aviation, the Empire Pass, etc., etc. etc., without having to pay an admission fee, are funded by the Friends.

This year, as we look forward to the planned renovations to the Children’s Room, we have pledged to raise $30,000 for that project. Finishing touches can then be added to the room, thus ensuring a warm, charming and creative envi ronment in which the children can explore and

The Garden City Public Library is an import ant information and cultural center for the community. The Garden City Public Library Trustees, Administration and Staff are commit ted to fostering the Library’s mission to connect people with information. Librarians engage read ers with reading recommendations, assist with research, and arrange programs and workshops to encourage a love of reading and learning.

The Adult Reference Department offers many programs such as art lectures, cooking, crafts, book clubs, Summer Reading Club and Hidden Gems: title swap book discussions. Sample infor mation programs: Medicare, Social Security, and defensive driving and much more.

The Children’s Department offers: Mommy

and Me, movement and music, family programs, story times, book discussions, art and science and food decorating programs, two Summer Reading Clubs (one for preschool and one for grades K-5). Holiday family events including making Gingerbread houses, a Halloween Parade, build ing bird houses and much more. The Children’s Room and Circulation Desk Area is undergoing a major renovation to better meet community needs, particularly the needs of the Library’s

An adja cent sitting area will provide a com fortable reading lounge for adults and low transaction counters and work surfaces will be a more convenient option for children in the Circulation Desk area. New lighting, flooring, and paint will complete the space.

The Young Adult and Children’s Departments jointly host tween activities such as book discus sions, reading pals, games, crafts, and more.

The Young Adult Department provides teens volunteer opportunities through the Teen Advisory Board and opportunities to earn Community Service hours through differ ent activities and programs. Also offered is a Summer Reading Club, workshops for babysit ting, practice college entrance tests and college prep, baking, STEM programs, movies, game nights, holiday events and many others.

Materials for use in the library or home include: books, magazines, newspapers, music CDs, DVDS and audiobooks. Ask about museum passes and homebound service (resuming soon).

Garden City Thunder Football is a youth football organization that is open to kids ages 7–11 (typically 2nd through 6th grade) who live in Garden City or go to school in Garden City. Thunder Football competes against other towns in the Nassau County Youth Football League (NCYFL). PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION

The Wings Hockey Club was founded in 1973. This season (2022–2023) is the 50th anniversary.

The purpose is to teach and develop skills in the sport of ice hockey among the youth of Garden City High School and generally encourage amateur hock ey in the community.

The program is open to all players in the 6th through 12th grades who live in the Garden City school district. Players must reside in the Garden City school district but may attend private schools.

The club currently participates in the High School Hockey League of Nassau County, Inc. This year it is fielding a Varsity team and a Middle School team.

The hockey club is not a Garden City High School or Middle School athletic team. It is a self-funded organization and over the years the TMA has been a generous sponsor of the teams and program.

PURPOSE

The GCHS is dedi cated to preserving the historic character and unique ambiance of our Village and raising awareness, understand ing and appreciation of its history, through community outreach, involvement and educa tion. The museum build ing is a resource for the entire community.

Garden City has the largest cluster of historic structures of any com munity on Long Island.

After the razing of the third Garden City Hotel, a masterpiece designed by McKim, Media and White and a destination for explorers, politicians, community members

and visitors from around the world, residents became outraged that local historic buildings were being torn down. This led to the forma tion of The Garden City Historical Society in 1975.

The Society is also committed to restoring, maintaining and manag ing its National Registerlisted, 1872 A.T. Stewartera “Apostle House” museum. Using funds raised by our Capital Campaign, the front and east facades are complet ed and the north facade is undergoing restoration, thanks to the generous partnership with Vinny Muldoon of Old World Quality Corp.

The Museum is open for guided tours by appointment.

We were also suc cessful (after filing a case in Federal Court against the Village) in an agreed settlement, establishing three handicapped spac es on 7th Street.

Our mission is to increase awareness for melanoma prevention, provide information and services on skin cancer detection, and support melanoma patients through education of the latest treatments.
