As spring is just around the corner what better way to welcome it in than a trip out to the theatre and the seaside! The season opens with our beautiful musical adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s The Singing Mermaid. This co-production with Royal and Derngate is suitable for KS1 and lower KS2 and features all the characters from the much loved book plus much more!

THEATRE

If you are looking for an exciting and engaging way to explore materials, recycling and the environment with your pupils then look no further than Junk! Our interactive performance highlights the issues surrounding what we throw away and what we can do about it in an enjoyable immersive puppetry experience. Suitable for KS2 this is a must for any classes studying materials or protecting the environment.

8 FEBRUARY–22 APRIL Through beautiful puppetry, songs and performance this magical show brings Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks’s enormously popular book, The Singing Mermaid, to life. One day, the singing mermaid is tempted away from all of her sea creature friends and her peaceful home at Silversands to join a travelling circus. 16 MARCH– 29 APRIL For pupils studying materials and the effect our use of them and how we dispose of them has on the environment, this is a unique opportunity to explore these issues in a way that will not only entertain them, but have a lasting impact. A fantastic way to enhance a project and act as the starting point for debate and writing around the issues it raises. Discover a story about the things we throw away. Every day, under our very eyes, in rubbish bins and recycling boxes across the country, something strange and exciting is happening.

RECEPTION–YEAR 5 Curriculum links English: Fairytales Running time 1 hour 15 minutes and babes. It tells the story of a King and Queen desperate for a child, and a fairy who grants their wish. But when the fairy is not invited to baby Rose’s christening, she casts a different kind of spell – on her 16th birthday, the young princess will prick her finger and everyone in the kingdom will fall asleep for 100 years. Only the arrival of a prince from the Far East brings hope of an awakening. This bold production spins puppets, projections, automata and live music to weave an irresistible magic.

An immersive puppetry experience, where the audience embark on a unique adventure, watching puppetry as well as making their own puppets. It’s almost New Year and little Mochi Man, tired of being bullied because of his small size, decides to run away. Join him on his adventures as he travels from the snowy mountains of Hokkaido, to the hustle and bustle of Tokyo with 2 performers, ‘origami’ puppets, animation and specially composed music.

We take inspiration from the music of Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns, and dissect it for body part potential, a little help from Charles Darwin and a whole lot of cardboard to mash up a show full of puppet possibility.

JACK AT THE BEANSTALK CAFÉ

Presented by Hand to Mouth Theatre Wednesday 13 – Thursday 14 June 10.30am / 1pm For age 4–8 Duration 45 mins LOCATION: STUDIOS Hand to Mouth Theatre present a nourishing bean-feast of stories in the Beanstalk Café, including the sweet and sour tale of The Old Woman in a Vinegar Bottle, and a tasty take on Jack and the Beanstalk — with shadows and table-top puppets, and live music and song.

Half Moon presents a Tam Tam Theatre production Monday 18 June 10am / 11.30am / 2.30pm For age 4 months–3 years Duration 25 mins LOCATION: STUDIOS A warm, intimate and playful new piece for under 3s inspired by nature and the seasons. Framed within an evocative soundscape, this is the perfect introduction to theatre for the very young. Leaf is another heart-warming play created by Tam Tam Theatre, whose previous shows for very young children include Circles in the Sand and Curious. At the end of the performance, children are invited onto the stage to play among the leaves and explore a landscape created by the changing seasons.

Yellow petals, singing birds, soft grass beneath your feet; welcome to Spring. And here is Pom: climber of trees, chaser of butterflies. Her lovely cheeky face makes her mum so happy and all is good. But what’s this door in the lush green grass? This deep dark open door…you don’t want to go in there, do you?

Whether you’re looking for a puppetry workshop, a school residency or a puppet-themed day, Little Angel have an impressive range of creative activities for you. We will provide puppeteers in residence, partner with outside organisations or create a bespoke puppetry project just for you!

For a week, a term or a whole academic year, we can provide puppetry residencies within your school or setting which can link with the curriculum or a particular theme. We provide pupils with opportunities to design, make and manipulate puppets, and share their work across the school. In addition we train staff in using puppetry with pupils to unlock their learning potential. On our one-day puppet making workshops, pupils work with a puppet maker and assistant, designing and making a range of puppets around a set theme of your choice. Perhaps you would like to create a whole-school or year event which is themed around puppets. These can include puppet making workshops, talks, demonstrations and puppet handling sessions. We can work in your setting or at our Studios space to make a simple puppet linked to a current show or a topic/story of your choice (where suitable), either as part of a visit to the theatre or as a stand-alone workshop in your setting. Puppetry is an exciting way to explore the curriculum in a creative and imaginative way. We can come into your school and run a workshop or you can visit us.

These upright people puppets are extremely versatile and can be used to link with English and storytelling or a historical period or around a topic of your choice, just ask! Curriculum links English (exploring characters or story), History (making puppets from a certain historical period), Topic (making puppets themed around your topic), R.E (making puppets to tell a religious story), Art

Time Needed It takes a full day for pupils to make these puppets so we would work with the class for the whole day. Age This puppet is most suitable for Year 1 to Year 6.

SHADOW PUPPETS

Our shadow puppet making workshops allow children to not only to learn a new puppet making skill but also explore some science as they learn about shadow and light, as well as creating exciting fantasy worlds and characters. Curriculum links English (exploring settings and story), Topic (making

puppets themed around your topic), Science (exploring shadow and light), Art and Design, Design and Technology. Time Needed We can work with one class for a whole day to make puppets and have a go at using them. For larger schools we also run half day sessions. Age We recommend these workshops for Years 3-6 but will consider Year 2. Cost £390+VAT per day. We can work with one class for the whole day or 2 classes for half a day each. For 3 form entry schools we can offer 1.5 days (half a day per class) for £600+VAT.

DRAGON PUPPETS

Want to know how to train a dragon? Design your own fantastical creature and bring it to life through

puppetry. These string puppets can fly through the air and are ideal for any class exploring mythical stories that involve wondrous creatures and magical adventures! Curriculum links English (myths and legends, stories that feature dragons), Art and Design, Design and Technology. Time Needed It takes a full day for pupils to make these puppets so we would work with the class for the whole day. Age This puppet is most suitable for KS2, Year 3 to Year 6 Cost £390+VAT per class per day

Meet some of our puppets, learn about how they work, what they are made of and how we make them. Prices start from £85 + VAT. We can deliver this at school as part of an assembly or to groups of children or you can come to us (can include a tour of the theatre if you are visiting us subject to availability).

A crash course in puppetry performing and the art of becoming a puppeteer for total beginners. We teach the skills needed to bring puppets and objects alive with movement and emotion. An introduction to the art of being a puppeteer. This training can be delivered either as one full day with one group or a condensed version as separate sessions for multiple groups over the course of a day.For Young people and adults from Year 7/8 (age 12) onwards. £360 + VAT for one full day. This informative session will provide you with all the knowledge you need to explore storytelling and story making with puppets!
