Welcome to the spring season at “the Home of British Puppetry”. We’ve got some popular shows making a return, and some new companies visiting us for the first time. Make sure you book early to catch your favourites.

Red Riding Hood Norwich Puppet Theatre, age 4+ We all know the story of Little Red Riding Hood, but which story do we know? Norwich Puppet Theatre’s retelling of this classic folktale draws on the story’s origins in the oral tradition, together with versions by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. Following the path to her grandmother’s house, through a forest filled with howling wolves, Red Riding Hood, a charcoal-burner’s daughter, needs to use her wits in order to survive. Follow our eponymous heroine into the woods and expect a rich mix of puppetry, music, song, inventive staging and witty dialogue. Created by the team behind Little Angel’s production of Alice in Wonderland. The Three Billy Goats Gruff Garlic Theatre, age 3+ This is the simple story of three hungry goats and a grumpy old troll, told with a gentle ecological message. Watch out for the dance of the goats, the flying troll and loads and loads of rubbish. Garlic Theatre creates a magical world to entrance and delight a young audience. With puppets, live music, storytelling and singing. Fiddlesticks Garlic Theatre, age 4+ Tap your feet and listen to the beat… Fiddlesticks is the playful spirit of a violin who breaks free from his strings and leads us into a world of musical fantasy in search of the beautiful Violinka. On his magical journey, puppets made from old instruments spring to life: birds fly out from music scores, a horse emerges from the bow of a violin… Garlic Theatre conjures a spellbinding tale of rhythmical twists and turns with a lively blend of clowning, rod and shadow puppets, percussion and live music. Mozart with Puppets Aurora Orchestra with Julie & Roger Lade, age 2+ Discover the extraordinary music of Mozart: marionettes, glove and rod puppets are brought to life by his works, weaving their stories among the musicians. Little Angel Theatre collaborates with members of the dazzling Aurora Orchestra in a show inspired by a selection of Mozart’s works including The Magic Flute Overture and his variations on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Magical characters and fantastical animals enact their tales as the musicians play! When Eggy Met Peggy Tallulah Swirls Theatre Company, age 3+ What happens when the lonely egg, sat on a wall, meets the sparkling pea from under that huge pile of matresses…? Join Eggy and Peggy the pea, a rock-n-rolling raspberry, cha cha-ing carrots, royalty and a blue horse in this deliciously funny and original twist on The Princess And The Pea. Young Goldilocks likes to explore the world and experience new things. The Rainbow Collectors, age 3+ Two children are helping their mother in the kitchen. But when they are left to their own devices, the mischievous pair accidentally create the Gingerbread Man. The Rainbow Collectors re-tell the popular story of The Gingerbread Man. Using puppetry, live cooking, and a sprinkle of imagination, The Gingerbread Man is brought to life in a brand new way. Have you ever wanted things to slow down, the world to stop changing, the sea to stop? Craig’s hot on the trail of his very own mystery but unfortunately his ‘evidence’ has a mind of its own. His investigation will take him far out to sea, down into the undergrowth and up into the starry sky on a journey that delves into fisherman’s tales, the amazing science of butterfly migrations and the secret places of our own hearts. Me & the Sea is a powerful and visual new story combining table-top puppetry, beautiful live music and energetic physical storytelling. Tim & Light Tucked In Productions, age 4+ Tim lives with his bossy Mum and is approaching his difficult teenage years, where everything is ‘absolutely so annoying’! One day he is visited by a mysterious stray white cat whom he adopts and names ‘Light’. Tim and Light take a magical train ride, where adventure awaits. Tim will need to discover the true meaning of friendship before it is too late... Videk’s Shirt The Puppetellers, age 2-5 A much loved traditional Slovenian children’s story by Fran Levstik. Videk is a small boy who is very friendly with all the animals in the countryside. One day the wind blows away his raggedy shirt. Videk is cold – who can help him? Come with Videk and his animal friends and learn how the sheep’s wool is made into a lovely new warm shirt. The Little Red Hen The Puppetellers, age 2-5 The Little Red Hen lives in the farmyard. One day she finds some grains of wheat and decides to make some bread. But who will help her? Come and join in with the story of The Little Red Hen and lend a hand in making a most delicious loaf! The Little Red Hen is an intimate interactive storytelling piece involving puppetry, song, live music and lots and lots of joining in! The Chronicles of Bitter and Twisted: The Return of the Ugly Duckling Galopin, age 5+ Everyone knows the story of The Ugly Duckling. A baby duck was small and ugly, scorned by all, but grew into a beautiful swan. Lesser known, is the other story, of a baby swan who was also small and ugly, scorned by all and grew into a... well, a duck. The Snitchity Titch Show Ronnie Le Drew, age 2-6 Snitch spends his pocket money on a boat and sails away in it, but the boat sinks, and he swims to an island, where he meets the Dodo bird, who has a box of gold kept in a magic safe. But also on the island lives the Greatest Robber in the whole wide world. What happens next? Come and see the show and find out! Elvis Schumacher, cobbler and craftsman, has worked all his life creating the most beautiful footwear. But now he’s hit hard times… Everyone’s buying boring shoes from the evil businessman, Bunyan Sole-less. Time is running out for Elvis. With one piece of leather left and Bunyan’s factory growing, can anyone help him? Inspired by the exquisite Ladybird Book, which all parents will remember, Theatre of Widdershins brings you another classic fable using magical puppets, intricate design, original music and the simplest of dialogue. Coming Next The Ugly Duckling
A colourful and enchanting show, this classic Little Angel Theatre production is an audience favourite and remains close to the spirit of Hans Christian Andersen’s perceptive story. Accompanied by live music and voices, the beautifully made puppets tell the story of the Ugly Duckling who grows up feeling “different”. Meet Mother Duck and her family swimming in the moat, the wise Blackbird, the friendly Bug-Eyed Toad and the comic Great Gobble Gobble Turkey. Along his travels the Duckling has many adventures. You will shiver in the cold winds, hold your breath when the hunters approach and feel sad for the lonely Duckling as winter closes in… but the ending to this tale will make you cheer! Our popular Saturday morning 8 week club for 2-5 year olds (nursery and reception) and their carers. See a performance of Goldilocks before the following 7 weeks are spent on ‘crafty’ activities, songs and games linked to the show, including some simple puppet making. Children must be accompanied by an adult and leave each session with something they have made themselves. PUPPET PASSPORT EASTER CLUB, age 5-11
This Easter Little Angel Theatre will transport you around the world of International Puppetry. From Turkey to India, the Far East, and let’s not forget the English seaside! Each day you’ll visit another country, find out about the puppet styles they have there and then… make your own! Choose to come for just one, two, three or all four days. SPC members see a performance of A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings before undertaking a 9-week challenge to create their own puppets and develop a short play. The term ends with a show for friends and family. This term participants will be making table top puppets and create a performance inspired by A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings. Working with experienced puppetry practitioners and directors they will learn puppet making and performance skills. FOR SCHOOLS, NURSERIES & EDUCATORS What better way to inspire children than by visiting the Home of British Puppetry! Why not book tickets to see the shows (£6 per ticket – free adult with every 10 children)? As the only building-based puppet theatre in London we are unique in our ability to link up to the puppetry section of the National Curriculum. AGE POLICY Our shows are designed for specific age groups. Babies and children under the stated age will not be allowed into the auditorium – this is theatre policy. Baby Friendly shows are suitable for babes in arms to attend and are designed so that parents can bring their older age children even if they have babies – the show is not modified in any way to appeal to children under the normal age range of the show.
