Shine With

wine

Neutrals are simply boring this season. Bright colours that add to your skin tone and up your glam quotient are what work. Lakmé Studio, the salon arm of beauty brand Lakmé has announced ‘wine’ as the colour of the season. The new look as defined by Lakmé uses shades of burgundy define your different facial features. Sushma Khan, National Trainer – Skin and Makeup, Lakmé Studio says, “Wine denotes affluence, supremacy, dominance and magnificent richness. This radiance is perfect for the Indian skin tone as it blends beautifully on the skin. This summer, we will see the Indian woman move away from natural shades towards more colourful and vibrant shades such as Wine.” According to Sushma, this is a versatile hue that can be used to create both day and night looks even though wine is a very glam party hue. She suggests using a deep burgundy hue to create the smoky eye effect instead of traditional black. It will give this classic eye makeup a modern, glam twist. Add two coats of mascara and a light lip hue to complete the look. You can also try the stained lip effect with wine-hued lip stain or even a lip pencil. Wine lips look bold and glamorous. You can give your cheeks radiance and definition with a burgundy blush, because it blends well with Indian skin. Sushma adds, “Translate the glamourous wine look for daily wear by using a wine coloured eyeliner on your eyes. You can highlight your eyes without spending long minutes in front of the mirror putting makeup on. You can apply one coat of mascara with wine colour liner on your eyes. If you are going to a party translate the look with a shimmer shade on your eyes. Blend in a burgundy shadow on your socket area to open up the eyes, and add a dash of shimmer hue at the centre of the eyelid. This is subtle look that is easy to carry.”

Butterfly Blue

Eyes Blue over the lids and green too have been hot eye makeup colours for quite a few seasons now. This spring there is a brighter note to both the hues and new trick to wearing them. Instead of wearing the colours singly, add a twist and blend the two for a distinct eye makeup. You can apply the two hues in similar tone on upper and lower lash lines blending at the out corner of your eyes á la the Spring 2010 Makeup trend announced by The Body Shop. To get the look follow The Body Shop Makeup expert Chase Aston’s tips using The Body Shop Shimmer Cubes in Sea Shell, Hushed Orchid, Sparkling Sky and Emerald Sea, Rs 1,195: •

Set the base by applying the pale lavender of the shade Hushed Orchid over your upper lid with a damp eye shadow brush.

Then use a wet slanted shadow brush to apply the bright blue hue Sparkling Sky over the upper lash line extending to the outer corner.

Apply the bright aqua green colour Emerald Sea along the lower lash line and blend well at the outer corner with the blue hue.

Use shade Sea Shell as the highlighter.

Complete the look by applying The Body Shop Kiss Of Colour Cheek Blush, Rs 795, a lovely golden coral hue on the apple of your cheeks. Give your lips natural coral tint with the The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Stain, Rs 575

Peaches And

Pink

Pink is always a pretty colour for spring and summer, and so is peach. They are the hues that go with any complexion. This time round the shades work on lips and cheeks going from palest to the fruitiest. The fun bit of wearing pink and peach right now is that the way you can play with the textures while getting your monochrome look. Lips can go creamy or ultra shiny while cheeks go matte to sheer and shimmering to catch the sunlight. We like the latest selection of lippies and blushes from MAC in hues that perfectly match the current trend. Check out the new MAC CremeSheen Glass in Loud & Lovely, and Partial to Pink, Rs 970 (each) for your dose of pink, and peachy pink lips. Accentuate your colour by using MAC Lip Pencils in In Synch, and Mouth Off, Rs 850 (each). Now give your cheeks a gossamer sheer hue in softest of pink with MAC Mineralize Blush Duo in Raphsody in Two, Rs 1,500, or go bright and shimmery with MAC Mineralize Blush Duo in Two Virtues, Rs 1500.

DO

Pair the simple winged liner eyes with your red lips to create the classic forties look. To get the perfect winged tip, follow the makeup pro’s strategy. Smoothen a base shadow all over your lid, then take an eye liner or liquid eye pen and draw the ‘wing’ first at the outer corners of your eyes. Then draw a thick line from the inner corner to the outer corner joining with the ‘wing’. Add a coat or two of curling mascara to your lashes to accentuate the look. We liked Essensual 20 Eye Pen in Jet Black, Rs 285 for its soft slim tip that glided smoothly over the lash line. To give your lashes clean but soft curl, try Oriflame Giordani Gold Lash Fascinations Mascara, Rs 590 with natural wax and micro pigments for deep colour, and innovative plastic brush for curling strokes.

&

Do’s Don’ts DON’T

DON’T

Just stick to shimmery pastel shades for your nails. Be bold, be bright. Hues like orange, red, and purple, blue are the hues to wear on your fingers and toes. One cardinal rule to wearing these colours – keep your nails short and shaped oval. We like the bright selection from Lotus Herbals Colour Dew Nail Enamels in Orange and Purple, Rs 95, or pick the bright engine red shade from Deborah 7 days Long Enamel, Rs 230, or midnight blue hue from Inglot Nail Enamel, Rs 490.

Let melanin build up mar the natural glow of your skin. The harsh rays of the sun, free radicals hasten the production of melanin in our skin which can appear as dark spots, and uneven patches. In fact this also slows down skin’s natural turnover process leaving it dry and dull. Experts say vital doses of skin soothing vitamins like E and C go a long way in dealing with this problem. In fact skin brightening creams with vitamins and SPF protection can help deal with dark patchy skin. Try Garnier Light Moisturiser, Rs 130 with vitamin C, lemon essence and SPF 15 to prevent dark spots, and get a lighter skin tone. Or pick Olay Natural White Day Lotion, Rs 150 with vitamin E, Glycerine, emollients and SPF 15 to prevent sunburn, tan and photoaging.

We loved the super light, silky feel of this potion. When applied to towel dried strands it minimised the appearance of split ends, and gave our hair a super sheen. Our dry, rough strands also felt much softer, and was easily manageable.

We liked the hydrating, and smoothing texture of the lipstick and the ultra shine the gloss gave. Keeping Nature’s Promise

Beauty with

Purpose

If you are thinking of going green, and doing your bit for saving mother earth, then you might as well consider the personal care products you use on a regular basis – turn to nature, to help nature. By Priyanka Bhattacharya

BEAUTY | A P R I L

2 0 1 0 19

Pampering yourself is always a good thing. Being good to the environment is also a good thing. And if you can do both at the same time then it’s simply fantastic. So how do you go about doing the good thing by Nature, and your skin? The obvious answer is to look for products that use nature-based ingredients.

advantage natural skin care products have is they are human-friendly and earth-friendly. They do not cause any harm to the user and also the environment. Lab-based products need animal testing. Nature-based products, on the other hand, are more humane; there is no animal testing involved with them,” adds Dr Batra.

Natural beauty products are the safest with zero side-effects. There are many simple answers for as many problems in nature. “Eat an apple a day to keep healthy, because apples are rich in iron, or eat bananas, is an age-old adage. Drinking Aloe Vera juice, for example, is good for improving the general immune system; Aloe Vera has 70 natural ingredients, these include minerals, enzymes, proteins, amino acids and vitamins. For centuries, nature has provided us ingredients having powerful antibiotic, antiseptic, or anti-inflammatory properties,” says Dr Mukesh Batra, Homeopath, and founder of Dr Batra’s Positive Health Clinic.

So how do you ensure that you are making an ethical choice when selecting your skincare, hair care or makeup products? Here are few tips on how you can choose the right beauty product.

But there’s more to it than just few natural extracts. Going ‘green’ with beauty means looking for things that make the product environment friendly - it could be the packaging, the ingredients, and the brand’s manufacturing policies. “The greatest

20

BEAUTY | A P R I L

2010

Check the ingredients When picking up a product look for natural extracts and ingredients as much as possible. Says Vikas Mittal, Vice President – Personal Care, Dabur India, “It has been known for time immemorial that nature has, in its fold, several solutions to meet your daily beauty care needs. A plethora of nature’s produce – ranging from almonds to henna and lemon to coconut milk – have properties that can help repair damaged hair, keep your tresses fresh and help your skin beat the ill-effects of stress and pollution. Women in India have been using these natural remedies as part of their beauty regimen for years.” So now look for

these extracts in the bottled versions. In fact a truly natural product will avoid using synthetic bases like mineral oil, parabens, petroleum jelly, or phthalates.

Know how they make it The way a nature-based or herbal product is made is generally different from the regular brands in the market. The process of ingredient extraction is different as well. So it is a good idea to check on the manufacturing process on the brand. Some Nature based brands do mention the extraction process of the ingredients, but you can also search the company site for more information. Says Neepa Chatterjee, Vice President of Iraya, “Customers today understand the benefits of natural products. The manufacturing process is crucial for gaining maximum potency of the formulation. Which is why, we study the prescribed processes and combine them with the latest scientific advances, creating products that are effective and safe. We firmly believe in making products that are as natural and pure as possible, both in terms of ingredients and the manufacturing process – we use potent herbs, powerful formulations, pure essential oils distilled at the source itself, cold pressed oils, extracts from fresh organic fruits, herbs and vegetables.”

Read the label Like you do when choosing food items, make it a habit to read the label on the product not just for the ingredients but also for other ethical certifications. “Women should read the ingredients list carefully to see if it contains any chemical ingredient. Based on this they can ensure that what they are putting is a natural product or not. Natural products definitely have longerlasting benefits on the skin,” says Smita Aggarwal of Freshline. Emphasising this point Iraya’s Chatterjee adds, “We believe that our customers have the right to know exactly what they’re using which is why we disclose all the ingredients on the product label. The benefit of the product can be seen with 28 days following the cell renewable cycle.”

Research the brand There’s a lot of greenwashing that happens today in the name of ethical beauty. Beware of false claims. “It’s important that customers understand claims in relation to products. At The Body Shop we are always very careful with regard to claims, however our customers will find products can deliver very efficient results.” says Shriti Malhotra, General Manager, The Body Shop India. So it is a good idea to read up about various nature-based

brands in the magazines and on the Internet. Check for reviews of their products. Explaining this Natasha Shah, Founder, Nature’s Co says, “Today, women are both well travelled and well read. She takes keen interest in what she is buying. Word of mouth recommendations and her learning from past experiences are key factors that affect her buying behaviour and patterns. Today a lot of highend beauty magazines are exposing goodness of products to readers through recommendations by their own beauty editors which involves thorough detailed trial sessions conducted by them. Check for information from the Internet.”

Look for certification “Organic is a very misused term. So believe only those that show organic certification and other labels like ‘recyclable’, ‘not tested on animals’. In fact we are a 100 percent natural products company, and do like to use organic carrier oils for our creams and lotions from certified partners. However we do not put organic label since not all ingredients are organic. But we are 100 percent natural,” says Divita Kanoria, Founder, Tathaastu by The Vedic Collection, a nature based brand. In fact genuine brands will have

nothing to hide in terms of certification, and will put them on the labels. Says Charvi Gupta, Vice President, Lotus Herbals, “Most brands will proudly mention if their products are natural or organic. Just look for the “Earth Friendly” label in the product descriptions to see if a product has met the natural and organic standards. Additional important features, such as vegan, fair trade, cruelty free & recycled packaging, will also be indicated, if applicable. Date of Manufacturing as well as date of expiry or customer care contact numbers in case of any query should be mentioned on the product. These are some simple standard that one should see before buying any products.”

Check the shelf life Finally what really differentiates a natural or organic product from a regular brand is the use by date of the product. A truly natural brand with natural preservatives or being preservative free will have short shelf life of anywhere between three months to ten months. Explains Tathaastu’s Kanoria, “If one is a 100 percent natural brand then the shelf life will below since the products will not have chemical based preservatives. In fact products from our brand has no more shelf life than ten months.”

BanishWrinkles

There’s a new product in town that mimics skin’s natural mechanism to fight skin’s aging process and leave it supple. Try BOXTLAK-BL Cream Wrinkle is a furrow in the skin and is a natural process developed during aging. Premature wrinkles may be caused by deficiency of nutritional components in the different tissues, cellular destruction through excessive sun exposure, the effect of free radicals on the cellular membrane, and deterioration in the genetic programming of the DNA. All this brings about the atrophy of the skin and consequently a general process of degeneration. Ageing skin results from the passage of time, overexposure to the sun that destroys cellular ability to reproduce, lack of proper care while young, health problems and hormonal imbalances. When we express our emotions by smiling, frowning, squinting, our muscles contract thousands of time everyday. These movements exert tension forces to the dermis and results in formation of wrinkles around the mouth, forehead and eyes. One of the most striking signs of skin ageing is the increased wrinkling of the face, neck and the area around the eyes. Wrinkles form due to the effect of constant pull of gravity over time, environmental damage and continued facial expressions.

Now there is a new solution to this premature aging, and photo damage to skin. Shalaks Pharmaceuticals has recently introduced its cosmo-derma product to address this problem. It has developed an anti-aging cream Boxtlak-BL, which promises Botulinum Toxin A like results with regular use. What makes this cream unique is that the peptides mimic the skin’s natural defense mechanism. According to the company the cream stands out from the rest because of the combinations of ingredients that make it effective.

SKIN

Under Lined

For some drama try the winged liner look on your lower lash line. Sweep your black shadow across the lower lashes to get cat’s eye with a twist.

This season doing up your lower lash line is seriously trendy. Instead of a liner apply a dark eye shadow, preferably black using a wet shadow brush for intensity, starting from the inner corner of your eyes till the outer corner. Extend the shadow at the inner corner little to the sides of your nose. Use a cotton bud to smudge the line a bit.

The

Healing

Aroma

It is everywhere around us, we practice it without even really being aware of doing so. Often you find that a whiff from the mint leaves in your refrigerator makes you feel fresh, the tanginess of orange as you peel it revives your senses, and you take a longer sniff to extend that sensation. Well, that’s aromatherapy for you. But there’s more to this form of holistic healing. Aromatherapy is derived from two words-aroma meaning smell and therapy meaning treatment. Aromatherapy is the practice of using volatile plant oils for physical and psychological well being. “Essential oils promote the body`s natural healing energy thereby restoring health and wellbeing. Aromatherapy was used in ancient civilizations and is said to be 6000 years old practice. The science of aromatherapy became popular in the beginning of this

century when people started looking for more natural ways to help cope with the stress of modern living. Remarkable research was carried out in France and Italy, though it technically originated in India. Henri Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist, is considered to be the father of modern aromatherapy,” explains Divita Kanoria, Aromatherapist and Founder of Tathaastu, the 100 percent aromatherapy based natural beauty brand. In addition to essential oils, aromatherapy encourages the use of other complementary natural ingredients including cold pressed vegetable oils, jojoba, hydrosols, herbs, milk powders, sea salts, sugars, clays and mud. “Aromatherapy is a holistic approach. It is the most natural way of treating an array of physical, mental and emotional problems. Also it is the most safe, effective and environmentally responsible

alternative to conventional medicines and cosmetics, says Dr. Blossom Kochhar, Aesthetic Aromatherapist and Chairperson of Blossom Kochhar Group. In addition to healing and beneficial benefits essential oils can be blended together to create appealing and complex aromas. Essentials oils can also be blended for a specific therapeutic application.

Working the Sense of Smell In ancient Egypt, aromatic baths were a daily ritual. This was followed by a message using aromatic oils made from cinnamon, rose, cedar, wood, lilies and so on. In those days, aromatherapy massage was meant for relaxation, pleasant

body scents, skin conditions and overall healing. They did not have a clear distinction between perfumery and healing. We now know that an aromatic essential oil massage heals through the sense of touch and smell. Here is where the importance of aromatherapy lies to be included in your regime. “Whether we are aware of it or not, our sense of smell is working for us all the time. I can instantly evoke a certain memory. It can just as quickly signal a change of mood, yet we often over-look the profound impact aroma has on our perceptions. Although many people still give less time and thought to the way our closet, shelf or a bureau draw smells, than to the wrist or an ear lobe does. There is

Divita Kanoria’s essential oil safety guide a growing interest in discovering new subtle ways to add aroma to our lives and surroundings. There are so many ways to surround ourselves in enjoyable suggestions of fragrance. More than 200 oils are used in aromatherapy with vastly different therapeutic properties,” adds Dr Kochhar. There are several methods by which the essential oils can be used. It can be through inhalation, topical application or ingestion. By inhaling the scents from the essential oils, your limbic system gets activated, which then works to give you the desired results of either relaxing or stimulating your senses. It actually influences the brain in producing hormones that promote the wellbeing of an individual. Applying essential oils to the skin through massage activates the thermal receptors in the skin and produces instantaneous responses.

Skin and Essential Oils Skin is the most susceptible part of our body, which is precisely why it is essential you take care of it. There is no doubt that skin care is vital to maintain a healthy life. There are numerous things that can contribute to poor skin including extreme heat, makeup, fatty food and oils. For some, the answer seems to be compiling a plethora of skin creams and lotions on their face. While there are some lotions and creams that are effective, this is not always the answer. Whether you are battling for acne or dry skin, aromatherapy can do wonders for your overall skin complexion. If you are not seeing the results you have hoped for from creams and lotions, natural care from aromatherapy is the answer. “Aromatherapy has regenerative or healing effects for both the skin and the hair. Not only do they stimulate and nourish the skin, but essential oils can also boost the immune system and

• Avoid using fennel and peppermint oils for babies and young children. • Do not use rosemary if you suffer from hypertension. • Lavender and lavindin should be avoided during high fever. • Fennel, lavender, rosemary should be avoided for epilepsy. • Fennel & rosemary should be avoided if having liver problems • Do not use grapefruit, lemon, lime oils when going out in direct sunlight as they are highly phototoxic oils. • Citronella, eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree should be avoided if you have skin sensitivity. • If you are under homeopathy prescription then do not use peppermint oil. • Essential oils like thyme, rosemary, rose, jasmine, and lavender should be avoided during pregnancy. • Avoid bay essential oil if taking aspirin, and fennel if taking paracetamol. bring about a feeling of well-being to even the most stressed individual. Skin care with pure essential oils work as anti-aging agents for the skin. Pure essential oils stimulate skin cells into reproducing at a faster rate, thereby reducing the time between new skin growth and the elimination of old cells. The use of essential oils in skin care also prevents the congestion of toxic debris by improving the general condition of

the lymph glands which improve circulation, aiding oxygenation and energizing the skin,” explains Divita. Essential oils can help reduce the bacterial and fungal infections in your skin thus soothing sensitive and inflamed skin. Oils that are applied to the skin are absorbed into the blood stream. These help in beauty, health and hygiene. Some oils are natural repellents and pesticide. Some essential oils like rose has a wound healing property which helps in the daily repair of the skin. Oils keep the skin healthy, lubricated and elastic making it less prone to wrinkles. They have antiseptic properties. They can treat various skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis etc. “Essential oils are absorbed through the skin and penetrate its deepest layers and from there travel to the organs glands and tissues of the body. They also regulate the blood and the lymph fluid, improving circulation, which helps respiration of the skin. The antiseptic and anti bacterial properties of essential oils help in healing skin inflammations. Essential oils are also helpful for treating burns and cuts. They not only reduce the possibility of infection but also stimulate new skin cells through their cycophylatic activity. Several essential oils act as skin tonics and help muscles to regain a healthy condition. The astringent action of essential oils helps in binding and tightening the skin tissues and thus arrests excessive oiliness of the skin. Essential oils help maintain the moisture level of the skin. Several essential oils act as a natural deodorant and as a skin tonic,” adds Dr Kochhar. For beginners it’s a good idea to pick up pre-blended skin care oils to meet your needs. But if you are better practiced then ensure you know the benefit of each oil and its impact on your skin before making your own blends.

Dr. Blossom Kochhar’s Aromatherapy tips Mature skin – 2 drops of hazelnut oil + 1 teaspoon almond oil + 8 drops sweet orange essential oil. Mix the oils and massage gently into the skin. Use morning and night after cleansing. Dry Skin - ½ cup dry oatmeal + 2 tablespoons honey + ¼ cup plain yoghurt or buttermilk . Grind finely the oatmeal in a blender or food processor. In a small bowl, put the ground oatmeal, honey and yoghurt/buttermilk. Mix thoroughly until it becomes a paste like consistency. Apply over the face and neck. Leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and pat dry. You can follow this remedy every day, preferably in the morning. Oily Skin - It can be use as exfoliating scrub. Take equal quantities of Fuller’s earth (multani mitti), orange peel, and sandalwood. Mix them and store it in a jar. To use, add one teaspoon of the mixture to the pulp of one medium sized tomato. Massage it into the skin and rinse it off. Use it two to three times a week. Combination Skin- Take 2 drops of Orange Essential Oil and massage for few minutes. Apply a hot towel to the entire face as a compress. It helps in moisturizing and conditioning the skin. Sensitive Skin - Take 1 drop of Lavender Essential +1 teaspoon of Aloe Vera Gel. Mix them together. Apply to the skin.

Safety Measures “Aromatherapy is safe even if you are allergic to any oil. Even if a reaction occurs it goes away very fast,” says Dr Kochhar. Although there are no side effects, and these oils are generally safe when used properly, still we need to be careful in choosing and using them. The dosage, purity, application method used and possible drug interactions play a pivotal role in determining the safety of essential oils. Dosage is by far

the most important factor to consider. Since essential oils are so concentrated and so potent, please be guided that they need to be used in very small quantities and preferably diluted in a carrier oil. The purity of the oil is also to be considered. Before buying the product you should not forget to check the labels. The method of application or administration of the essential oils also has a role in determining the safety of its use. As you can take for example, there are oils that are safe to inhale but

are not fit to be applied directly to the skin. This is true especially for essential oils extracted from oregano, thyme and cinnamon bark. “Some of us are allergic to natural ingredients or food. Thus, before using any oil it is important to do a patch test. Apply one drop of oil in your hand and put a plaster after 5 minutes remove the plaster, if the skin gets red then do not use. Even then if you get an allergy, wash with cold water,” advices Dr Kochhar.

Looks

Celebrate nature and pick your colours from the various hues around you; let the shades of fruits, flowers, stones, gems inspire you. . By Priyanka Bhattacharya There’s a new way to go earthy with your makeup. We are not talking neutral shades, pale hues and no makeup look. We are saying, look around and note the bright colours of the natural elements. Take inspiration. Try colours like sea blue, moss green, peach, mauve, pink, cherry and pair with earthy brown or khaki in soft blend for nature-inspired makeup. Says makeup expert Vidya Tikari, “Colours of fruits and flowers have always inspired spring makeup. Shades of cherry, peach and apple are best to do up your lips. There is a brightness in the colours. To keep it natural the colours of the makeup should complement your skin tone. Makeup should make your skin seem fresh, healthy and glowing, as if you’ve just run through a valley of flowers.” Enhance your nature-inspired makeup by blending different textures of products for unique effect. For instance blend shimmer with soft focus shades; or try matte shadow with glossy or creamy lips.

Skin like dewy flower The primary thing about putting on any makeup is good skin condition. In nature inspired look your skin needs to be at its natural best. Prep your face prior to makeup application by cleansing with a foamy face wash. Then apply a moisturizer--one with SPF in the daytime--and let it soak in for few minutes. Use water based foundation or even a creamy but lightweight base to even out your skin tone to look healthy and radiant. “The product should leave a bit of shine on your face and not shimmer. Dust a mineral foundation powder. Then Vitamin E spray from The Body Shop or Fix IT Spray from MAC or spritz of Evian Spa water on your face to set the base and get a soft, dewy effect,” says Vidya.

Sun kissed and earthy While dewy skin evokes the freshness of the morning, matte bronzer or terracotta blush dusted on apple of your cheeks, temples and chin suggests a woman who’s is love with the outdoors, and enjoys being one with the sun and the earth. To get the look apply the blush on the centre of your cheeks, chin, and sides of your forehead. Complete the look with two coats of mascara that’s been slightly smudged for a natural effect.

Purple iris Look cool and calm like the soft grey clouds in the sky that promise a relief from the scorching heat and dust by playing up your lids in purple and grey. To get the look first apply a matte mid tone grey eye shadow on your lid till your crease, extend the shadow beyond the outer corner of your eyes. Then take a purple liner or an eye shadow and line the upper and lower lash line with it. Blend the purple shade well at the lower lash line with a bit of grey eye shadow. Keep lips soft and natural with a nude pink lip colour. 32

Sea tone lids Turquoise, blue and green are hot eye colours for spring summer 2010. These colours also mimic the hues that you catch in the sunlit beach. To wake up your eyes, rim you lower lash line with a bright blue or a turquoise liner. The impact is bold and bright without being over the top. Create smoky eye with a blend of green, charcoal grey and a dash of gold. Pair this look with soft creamy peach lips and terracotta blush around the temples. BEAUTY | A P R I L

Fruit infused lips Nothing spells back-to-nature concept better than lips that are soft, pliable and done up in fruity tints. But the trick is to wear softer tones – like replace bright orange with soft peach. Also the mouth is not drawn, and the edges of the mouth are soft. Try lips that look as if been stained with a juice of a berry. Pick soft shades like pink cherry, soft apple red and creamy peach. 34

Bow Tied

Big playful bows are THE accessory to dress your hair this spring. Make sure you don’t look kitschy; pick one that is unique, made of silk, and can be tied into an oversized knot.

Bows may look harmless, and girly, but it is a style that is very in at the moment. But it can go horribly wrong if you don’t wear it right. Look for bows or scarves that can be tied around the head. Pick in luxurious materials like silk, leather and chiffon. Avoid readymade bow bands. Tie the bow really large and floppy.

The Swish Set

Volume, curls, below the shoulder length and lots of movement characterize Spring 2010 tress trends. by Gayatri

T Rao Girls who love to keep their length, and shy away from the stylist’s scissors can give a sigh of relief. Celebrate! For seriously long hair is back in fashion again. Though inspired from the glamorous 1940’s and early 50’s there is a more natural feel to the styles. Big hair - texturised, layered - curls, and waves are back with a vengeance. The trend that started last season is back with some reworkings. The waves are not over styled, the curls are looser, and even sleek straight hair has volume and some texture. Make your cut and style summer ready by going for brighter hair hues. According to Sudeep, the choices are shades of blondes and browns and coppers. “You should try subtle highlights with beige and caramel tones, and try auburn and copper shades for brightening your hair. They are a big hit this season”, says National Hair Trainer for Lakmé, Sudeep Grover.

Messy on purpose Curls and waves are here to stay, says Sudeep “Big hair is still in vogue. So are lot of volume, movement and waves – they are big on the runway; and also nicely defined curls.” More tousled your hair, the sexier it is. “It is not only low maintenance but also gives you the extra oomph factor. So if you have long hair and you aren’t much into slick style, then this undone look will be a good option. All you need is a little mousse and hairspray and you are ready with a ‘messy-onpurpose’ look. This hair look is not at all about perfection and works best on a second day hair. Just match your attitude with your hairstyle and throw in a little bit of punk element for better effect,” adds Sudeep. Wear your wavy hair with a side part or a part that’s slightly off centre.

Love your layers As far as hair cuts are concerned, it will be more layers, especially shorter layers on the crown, which adds a lot of volume. Sudeep explains, “Cuts will vary from shoulder lengths to longer, shorter hair cuts are on their way out in 2010. A lot of layers and fringes will still be in. Also longer to mid length hair would be popular. For a round face, layers can camouflage the roundness and add height on top.

All tied up If you like your hair straight then wear it tied back. Unlike last season, this time around the ponytails are lot more perfect and styled. Wear it high, at the back of your head. To avoid looking school girlish, polish your strands with a straightening mousse and blow dry straight. Pull back into a high ponytail, but avoid going to the top near the pate; keep it at the back of your head. But if you like buns then try a low chignon which can be messy or a double top knot that’s highly polished and sleek.

In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means ‘life-science’. Ayur means ‘life’ and Veda means ‘science’. Ayurveda is a holistic way of treatment, which takes into account various factors like mental balance, lifestyle and spirit of a person. According to some experts, Ayurveda has much more to offer when it comes to hair loss treatment compared to other forms of medicines. We spoke to Suparna Trikha, Aesthetician who works with Ayurvedic formulations and herbs, and Dr Sindhu Sreejith, Beauty Expert, Kama Ayurveda to tell us how to take care of our tresses with Ayurveda.

Tress Trouble - Hair Loss “It would be interesting to note that a number of youngsters are following natural treatments and herbal remedies not only for hair care but skin care too. It is unfortunate however that one learns when it is too late and we get several cases of young girls and women who have had rebonding, streaking, highlighting and left with coarse, thin and unmanageable hair,” says Suparna. It’s normal for a woman to lose up to 100 hairs a day on your comb, brush or sink – this is just the result of the usual hair growth cycle. “When hair falls out and isn’t replaced by new hair, a person can become bald or have bald patches. Hair Loss can be temporary or permanent, depending on the cause. Some of the main reason for hair loss is age factor, genetic factor, hormonal changes, stress, poor circulation of blood to the scalp and excess dandruff. Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss is usually a combination of herbs, diet, meditation, yoga, breathing, aromatherapy, and oil massage,” adds Dr Sindhu.

Remedy •

Massage the scalp gently with coconut or almond oil daily for 10 to 15 minutes. This improves blood circulation to the roots that can stimulate the follicles to grow stronger.

Boil neem (margosa) leaves in water, cool it, strain and store. Use it as the hair rinse daily.

Hair Colour And Nature You want to tint your hair but previous chemical damage has made your strands sensitised and dry. So you need something gentler. Good quality henna to which some conditioning actives and treatment herbs have been mixed is a good option. You can also look for gentle colours that are ammonia free. However if you use henna to colour your hair, avoid going for any chemical treatments at least 6 to 8 weeks post henna. “Natural treatment for hair colouring would only be henna to which certain herbs have been added. We have at our centre Hot Henna that is applied warm into clean hair; it gives a beautiful natural dark brown/ burgundy colour. In fact we have conditioning treatments for coloured and chemically treated hair that soothe sensitised scalp and hair. Our in-house treatments include Banana Bouncer, Earth Pack and Herb Hair Pack, all suited to different hair types, ” Says Suparna

Tress Trouble - Premature Greying “Many a times it is already too late and it requires a number of food, hair masks and regular scalp and hair treatments for the hair to start looking and feeling normal once again. As it is today’s lifestyles do not make our task an easier-stress, bad diet, smoking, alcohol, chemical treatments and above all the lack of time to take care for yourself all go a long way in what your hair really looks like,” says Suparna. Greying of hair is a natural process that happens with increasing age, but if the hair starts greying before the age of 35, then it spells trouble and imbalance in your body. Excessive intake of tea, coffee, alcohol, and meat, fried, oily, greasy, spicy sour and acidic foods leads to greying prematurely.

Remedy •

Apply a paste made from 2-tsp- henna powder, 1-tspfenugreek seed powder, 1-tsp-coffee, 2-tsp-mint juice and 2-tsp-basil juice. Apply this paste to the hair for two hours. For a darker colour, leave this paste in for 3-4 hours. Wash hair with any natural shampoo.

You can also grate some fresh ginger. Mix with honey and store it in a glass jar. Take one teaspoon of this mixture every day.

Hair Help By Suparna Trikha Dry hair- Massage half a cup of mayonnaise into hair and cover with a shower cap for 40 minutes. Shampoo as usual. Frizzy hair- After shampooing and conditioning the hair-take a glass of water and add to it 1tsp honey and use as an after shampoo leave in conditioner in wet hair. Itchy scalp- Take 3tbsp neem paste, a pinch of camphor and massage this into the scalp and cover for 20 minutes. Shampoo normally. This should be done twice a week. Oily hair- Take 5tbsp fullers earth and add 2tsp reetha and shikakai powder and mix with water and scrub gently into scalp and hair. Rinse out with warm water.

Tress Trouble - Itchy Scalp Stress, allergic reaction to shampoo, air conditioning, pollution and central heating lead to an itchy and red scalp, with tiny pimples or scabs. Stressed out roots can also cause itch in your scalp. Your hair can look dull and dry as the scalp and hair lacks nutrition. “Natural remedies can cure hair issues 100%. Ayurvedic herbs help hair health and Eclipta alba called “Bhringaraj” is one of the well known herbs to treat scalp problems and distress the scalp and hair,” adds Dr Sindhu.

Remedy •

Rub the scalp vigorously after washing the hair. It increases the blood circulation.

Daily application of coconut oil mixed with lime-juice on the hair is also beneficial. Applying juice of green coriander leaves on the head is also good.

Use amla, shikakai paste for washing your hair to soothe the scalp.

Massage your scalp with a moisturising oil alternate day to soften the skin. Massage at night and keep it on overnight, and avoid very hot water to wash hair.

As the weather changes skin feels tighter and parched. Even the effect of heavy dose of moisutrisers seems to vanish by midday. The sun’s increasing heat and dry air draw out all the hydration from the skin. That’s when a splash of cool water works best and the sensation is even better when that water is brimming with the goodness of natural skin soothing ingredients. That’s the new skin care rage – the facial mist spray; a multitasking beauty product that hydrates, cleanses, soothes dryness, and sets makeup. Facial mists have mineral water as the base along

with ingredients like sunscreen, minerals, antioxidants or aromatherapy oils that help you maintain a dewy, supple skin. You can use them if your face is feeling parched after a dehydrating plane trip, if your makeup has begun to wilt during the day or if you simply want a little spritz of something cool and refreshing. The best thing about a mist is that you can use it any time of the day, and comes handy when you are in a hurry to revive your skin by making it soft and fresh in a spritz. You can also use it to wipe away grime, and sweat mid day when you cannot go for the whole cleansing routine.

Today you get lots of options today in the market that can meet your specific needs. One of the most popular types of facial mists is pure mineral water in an atomiser – it revives tired skin, and is great for sun burnt or photo sensitive skin. Brands like Evian, Vichy, and Avéne have mineral water based facial mists in the market today. Interestingly Evian’s spray was first designed for medical use in hospitals and burn units. Depending on the brand, the water might contain different minerals such as calcium or magnesium in different concentrations. In fact chilled rose water is an excellent facial mist especially in summer for its fantastic cooling

effect – it is also a very popular facial product for many beauty experts, and takes from age old Indian beauty recipe. Besides mineral water other popular water bases include ocean water, spring water, and purified water. When buying a facial mist decide what you want the spray do for you. You want to tone and firm you skin then look for herbs and oils in the water that do the same. Many mists also contain sunscreen -- always a good idea -- so that you can moisturize and add some extra skin protection on top of your makeup. If you’re a fan of aromatherapy, you can look for a spray with essential oils or herbal extracts. Which one you choose depends on what smells good to you and the feeling you’re trying to conjure.

Spray of the mist

There are two main benefits of facial mist sprays -- they can temporarily change the appearance of your skin, and, since they’re usually cool and pleasantly fragranced, they can help you feel good. Some sprays are marketed as being able to temporarily give you a dewy glow if your skin is feeling dried, and others designed by cosmetic companies may help set or refresh your makeup. Keep in mind, though, that many of the ingredients added to sprays can’t actually be absorbed by your skin. So, while a mist might set your makeup or brighten your face for a little while, it’s not going to make a lot of physical improvements to your skin. Aromatherapy, the use of essential oils extracted from plants, might be another reason to use a facial mist spray. Many alternative medicine practitioners say certain scents can be effective against depression, anxiety, insomnia or exhaustion, although in some cases scientific evidence is inconclusive. If you choose a facial mist for this reason, be sure to read the ingredients list carefully. Several essential oils, such as cinnamon, can cause irritation or breakouts when applied to the skin. Be careful about overusing facial sprays. When you mist your face, the water evaporates, which can dry your skin -- think of the way your lips become chapped if you lick them too often. Also, some added ingredients might dry your skin out by stripping away the protective layer of oil, or sebum. If you find a spray that contains moisturizer or if you moisturize shortly before or after you spritz, you can help guard your skin’s moisture level. Also, keep in mind that, although a sunscreencontaining mist is probably better than no sunscreen at all, a mist might not cover your skin thoroughly enough to really protect you from the sun.

how to... Boost your

hair’s

strength and shine Who does not love a head of strong hair shining with health? It’s the most glamorous beauty accessory. But in the quest we often end up using the wrong products or following bad hair care regime. Result – dull, weak, hair that no amount of styling serum can revive. We got three experts from Sunsilk namely stylists Teddy Charles, Jamal Hammadi, and hair dermatologist Dr Francesca Fusco – co-creators who developed specific hair care product for the brand – to share their hair care secret to get strong, shiny mane. Dr. Francesca Fusco (Co-creator of Sunsilk Hair Fall Solution Shampoo & Conditioner) • Having haircuts regularly will improve its condition. • Alternate the use of hot and cold water in your scalp to increase the circulation and to prevent forming of dead cells. • Try to massage rather than scratch your scalp while you are applying shampoo. • Drink at least 2 litres of water a day which helps in keeping your hair in good condition. Jamal Hammadi (Co-Creator of Sunsilk Black Shine Shampoo) • Start with a good hair care regime, brushing your hair with a natural bristle brush. • Use shampoo that is designed for your hair, use products with ingredients that are natural like, coconut oil, amla, avocado oils, which will bring back moisture into your hair. • Use a leave in conditioner just at the ends of your hair, since the ends are always dry. • Stay away from gels and using a lot of hair spray. Teddy’s Tips (He co-created Sunsilk Lusciously Thick and Long Shampoo and Conditioner) • Only apply conditioner to the ends and not to the roots of the hair. • Avoid brushing wet hair as it tends to break very easily. • Towel dry hair after a wash and then, if you must, run a wide toothed comb gently through your hair. how to...

Be Your Own

Makeup Artist You love to wear makeup. But you have a major handicap when it comes to putting it on.The outcome is a hurried dash of lipstick on the lips and a coat of mascara on the lashes. But it is not really very difficult to get your makeup right if you have the correct tools and a steady hand.We got Charmaine Rao, Makeup Artist,Yves Saint Laurent India to give us pointers on the basic makeup kit, and the process.

After cleansing the face, tone and moisturize. Then apply a makeup base to even out imperfections and increase the hold of the makeup.

Find the right colour of foundation that best suits your skin tone. Apply the foundation all over your face and a bit on the neck to smooth out the colour.

Then apply a highlighter to the under eyes and some concealer to hide any imperfections. Blend, blend, and blend for a seamless complexion. Set the foundation with some loose powder.

For the eyes, apply a base colour on your lids up to your eyebrows. This base colour should be lighter than your skin tone. Then take a medium colour and apply this to the outer corner of your eyelids. Finally, with a darker eye-shadow, create a deeper crease. The key to applying eye-shadow is blending. Line the upper and lower waterlines with an eye pencil and finish off with mascara.

Apply blush to the apples of the cheeks blending it outwards.

Line the lips and finish with lipstick and gloss.

Pretty Hands and Feet Refreshing manicure and pedicure and nail art at Simar’s Nail Bar

Well summer is nearly here, and it’s time to put my hands and feet on show. So the need of the hour is a manicure and pedicure service that will get my hands and feet in top shape. I had been hearing about SImar’s Nail Bar for some time now, thus decided to check out the services, which included nail art, nail extensions besides the regular nail care. As I entered the Nail Bar, I was greeted with a whole host of smiling faces; the ambience was very cheerful. After seeing the nail art work, I really wanted one for myself. But it was suggested that I get pedicure and manicure done before the nail art. I wasn’t complaining as my hands and feet needed them badly. At the well-appointed pedicure and manicure station the manicurist and pedicurist cleaned, filed and buffed my hands and feet. Post exfoliation came the best part – the massage. It was so relaxing that I almost dozed off. Then they presented a selection of nail art samples for me to choose from. It was amazing to see the number of designs they had. I opted for a style in red, whites and glittery stones. The nail stylist started by applying a coat of nude nail paint on my nails, after which she put on a white border on

Holistic Healing Head to toe rejuvenation with age old Ayurvedic therapies at Birla Kerala Vaidyashala

I have been feeling exhausted lately, and wanted something that would really draw out all the stress blocking my energy. I needed a therapy that would not only rejuvenate me, but also deal with intrinsic ailment. What better than a holistic treatment at an Ayurveda centre. So I decided to try out Birla Kerala Vaidhyashala, the newly opened complete Ayurvedic treatment centre that offered med spa services and treatments based on holistic Ayurvedic recipes. The decor and layout of the centre was simple with a feel of a medical centre rather than a spa. I was recommended Sarvakaya Abyangam and Shirodhara to deal with my stress. I had two therapists assist me to the sparsely laid out room with the traditional wooden massage table. Since I was used to soft spa beds, this wooden table did feel a bit strange as I sat on it. The therapist started with Sarvakaya Abyangam where she massaged my head, neck and back. Then she made me lie down on the table on my back. With synchronized movements both the therapists started massaging each part of my body. The body massage ended with the therapist doing a final lymphatic drainage massage on my face. Then they started with Shirodhara – a long piece of cloth was tied on my

forehead so that the oil does not enter the eyes. She also placed cotton wools dipped in rose water on my eyes. Then she started pouring special oil on my forehead – it was poured evenly so that I felt stress drain away. After 15 minutes of the same, I showered with warm soothing water and came out totally rejuvenated.

Why we recommend: You want to come out

feeling totally relaxed and want a good night’s sleep then Shirodhara is it. The slow dripping oil on the forehead transforms you to a different world – it is one of the oldest known therapies for psychosomatic disorders. It also improves memory, concentration and ensures hair growth. If you are aching all over and you want your skin to feel totally nourished then Sarvakaya Abyangam it is. The synchronized rhythmic strokes during the therapy eases fatigue improves your flexibility.

Pamper a la Paris French Day therapy package at Jean Claude Biguine.

Every once in a while, it is justifiable for a girl to want an extra dose of TLC. After all those hectic meetings in office, I felt like letting my hair down and going in for a day long indulgence that would relax me and make me look good at the same time. I had heard of the day packages at the French salon and spa Jean Claude Biguine, and decided to give one of the packages a go. The spa had four packages to offer French Day, inspired from the French way of living with French Manicure and Pedicure and an hour long Biguine Bio Facial; Spa Prestige, includes the Phytomer facial and a Spa Prestige Body treatment; Cocoon Break Essential Satin Treatment with a Phytomer facial and body therapy, and Biguine Day with Biguine Body Scrub and Bio Oxygenating Facial; and Global Day with Phytomer Facial and Body Massage. I opted for the French Day service. My pamper fest started with the basic pedicure and manicure – hands and feet were neatly scrubbed, cuticles wiped away and nails filed and buffed to smoothness. Since my hands and feet were super dry, heavy duty moisturising lotion from OPI which also had anti aging properties was massaged in. I loved the way the pedicurist and manicurist applied bright red polish on my hand and toe nails. They really were meticulous about it and it was very neat.

After the hand and foot treatment I padded off to the facial room where I was offered the Biguine Bio Oxygenating Facial to revive my tired skin. The products used are 100 percent organic and have no side effects. The treatment started with a gentle face and shoulder massage followed by cleansing. Then my therapist used an unique product the sunflower exfoliator on the face and neck - a mask like scrub that gently removes dead skin cells as it is wiped off. Then she used special massage oils on the face and gentle steam to draw out impurities. After which she massaged in the glow serum meant to revive skin’s lost glow. Then the skin was toned with the mask which was meant to heal sensitised skin, and finally a light moisturiser was massaged in to protect the skin. I came out glowing and utterly pampered.

Why we recommend: If you are tired and need to

get your lost glow back, try one of these packages. The products used are totally natural, and ingredients come from plants extracts, and the sea. The quality of service is very efficient, and the quality and treatment standards of therapists are excellent.

Solution

PR Consultant, 30.

Problem My skin is oily mostly but during winter it tends to get dry, so I started using Ponds fairness cream. I do regular VLCC facial and use readymade face pack for the skin. How do I balance my fluctuating skin condition?

Skin care needs proper knowledge of skin type. It depends upon the constitution of the person, food habits, working conditions, etc. Oily skin is not a problem, if we understand how to manage it. To balance your skin, wash your face daily with a blended powder of manjistha, haridra (turmeric) and moong dal.

Solution Neelam Gupta,

Media Consultant, 51.

Problem I have dark circles under my eyes due to fatigue. I use rose water and chilled cucumber pieces to cool.

It is a common problem due to the increased stress levels. The main problem is the stress level that is appearing in the form of fatigue. Series of Shirodhara can be beneficial. If dark circles are due to fatigue, relevance of enough sleep and good nutrition goes without saying. For faster recovery ayurvedic cosmetic therapies and stress relieving techniques can be utilized.

Solution

Archana Pradhan,

Account Group Manager, 35.

Problem My main concern is hair loss. After I straightened and coloured my hair it has become thin and scanty. I have been trying all kinds of oils. But nothing has helped.

Along with oil, proper nutrition to hair is a must. If there is any constipation or acidity problem then seek help for that. For improving hair growth try Nasyam therapy - helps to stop hair loss. It also strengthens the roots. Hair is a living part of your own body, which requires adequate health nutrition and care. Any process involving chemicals (Straightening, colouring, etc.) will definitely affect the health and quality of hair. Treat your hair very gently,

Solution Sonalli Iyengaar, Painter, 37.

Problem My problem is pimples. I get it sometimes during my menstrual cycle or while going out in the sun for long or if there is a lot of heat in the air. I apply multani mitti-rose water pack over only those patches where there is acne and keep it overnight.

A detailed history and administering of pittahara medications will help significantly. Seek dietary advice according to your Prakruti to treat the problem from inside. Menstruation related and heat allergic pimples / rashes are easily treatable in Ayurveda. The patient should undergo a systematic consultation. Both oral medication and topical applications may be required. Consult with an Ayurvedic doctor for detailed guidance.

Free Flowing

Fitness

Experience the gentle flowing, movements of Tai Chi and treat your whole body to a gentle and relaxing workout.

Say goodbye to sweating, puffing and panting, say hello to feeling cool, calm, refreshed and energised. Just spend 15 minutes a day doing relaxing Tai Chi and restore your inner balance and calm. The movements are slow, graceful, and fluid. The effort is almost undetectable. You don’t need special clothes, shoes or gears to practice this form of fitness. Tai Chi is a centuries-old Chinese practice designed to exercise the mind and body through a series of gentle, flowing postures that create a kind of synchronized dance. Deeply rooted in Chinese meditation, medicine, and martial arts, tai chi combines mental concentration with slow, controlled movements to focus the mind, challenge the body, and improve the flow of what the Chinese call ‘’qi’’ – the life energy thought to sustain health and quiet the mind. In fact, almost anyone can do it, even those with conditions that may exclude them from other forms of exercise, says Bill Douglas, tai chi teacher and founder of World Tai Chi & Qigong Day. Seniors, the overweight, and the arthritic can all participate.

Benefits of Tai Chi The list of benefits of Tai Chi is very long. It can improve strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Some research also suggests that tai chi may help to improve heart function and decrease blood pressure. One of the most significant benefits is stress reduction. Just learning to relax and breathe more deeply can be reason enough to take tai chi.

The Body and the Mind In tai chi, both the mind and the body are constantly challenged. It is hard to say which benefits more, say experts. Initially, benefits are physical as you start with the body. You learn a set series of movements, all in the same order, and you have to pay attention. Tai chi demonstrate how inextricably interwoven the mental and physical body is. Your mood, your emotional states, and your physical states all begin to improve at the same time. Practicing tai chi also helps to counteract the repetitiveness of our jobs and daily routines, where our bodies move only in limited ways. Of course, aging also takes a toll on our bodies. Over time, strength lessens, elasticity fades, joint mobility decreases. Because balance is compromised as well, the likelihood of falling increases with age. Because tai chi often involves shifting weight from one leg to the other, it can increase both balance and leg strength. Tai chi is the best balance conditioning exercise in the world.

Choosing a Class Thinking about trying out tai chi? Here are some tips to help you find a class that’s right for you:

Tai Chi and Weight Because tai chi is low impact, experts say, it’s a good choice for people carrying extra weight, who often have knee and hip limitations. If you can’t walk or do traditional exercise without pain, tai chi may be gentle enough to get you moving. And with regular practice, they say, you will begin to burn calories and lose weight. When you’re overeating and not moving enough, your body becomes stressed, practicing tai chi gets you in touch with your body and makes you more aware of its needs. Tai chi may also help you deal with emotions that can trigger overeating, experts say. A lot of times, people are eating for reasons that have nothing to do with nourishment. Tai chi helps you to get in touch with what’s really going on. A lot of our dietary choices are based on our state of stress and anxiety. After a stressful

Visit at least 2 classes, if possible. Most instructors allow you to visit or sample a class free or for a minimal charge before joining.

See if you feel comfortable with the teacher and like his or her style.

Ask the teacher about his or her experience. Questions to ask include: How long have you been practicing? How long have you taught? Who is your teacher?

Speak to the students in the class. Ask them what they like about it, and what keeps them coming back.

Make sure you enjoy the class. If it’s not fun for you, you won’t want to go, and you won’t reap the benefits.

Keep in mind that before starting any new exercise regime, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor.

day, we’re hardly ever drawn to steamed broccoli. We crave greasy, salty food that helps us forget about the stress of the day.Tai chi’s mental benefits can also give us the perspective we need to make wiser food choices. Take 20 minutes to do a little tai chi, and you get more in tune to what your body is really asking for.

DetoxYour Body Get rid of toxin build up in your body and revive your energy with cleansing diet and lifestyle plan. By

Feeling tired? Having body ache, fatigued mind and low energy level? These symptoms mean that there is toxin build up in your body. To prevent this you have to detoxify your body. The word detox means removing toxins and other dangerous chemicals from the body and cleansing it so that it’s at optimal health and can function properly. Detoxification gets you in tune with your body after awhile and cleanses the internal systems to remove the toxin build up. We consume a lot of toxins regularly through food and the air we breathe. Experts believe that these toxins build up is the result of a wide variety of diseases ranging from heart diseases to more serious illnesses like cancer. Sources of toxins include those produced in the body during normal functions, such as the ammonia produced during the breakdown of protein, and chemicals such as pesticides, household cleaners, food additives, drugs, pollution, cigarette smoke, and heavy metals like lead that enter the body when we ingest or inhale them. A growing body of research suggests that

Gayatri T Rao many of the chemicals we ingest daily through food, water, and air can become deposited in fat cells in our bodies. A diet that lacks certain nutrients may also impair our natural ability to detoxify chemicals, which further leads to their buildup in the body. The cumulative load, called the “body burden”, is thought to lead to illness and has been linked to hormonal imbalance, impaired immune function, nutritional deficiency, and an inefficient metabolism. Signs are thought to include indigestion, bad breath, fatigue, poor skin, and muscle pain. That is why many people go for detoxifying their bodies to start a new and healthier way of living. It is as simple as a change in the diet plan and your lifestyle to detoxify your body. Therefore, it’s recommended that you opt for methods that you are comfortable with. This is because if you stop the diet midway right results will not be visible. Body detox helps you achieve healthy constitution through losing weight and becoming physically fit and preventing easy fatigability, headaches and other somatic pains. Getting started

There are many different types of detox diets. Generally, a detox diet is a short-term diet that minimizes the amount of chemicals ingested; emphasizes foods that provide the vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that the body needs for detoxification; contains foods, such as high fibre foods and water, that draw out and eliminate toxins by increasing the frequency of bowel movements and urination. When going on a detoxification process start slow before plunging in more seriously. Start with reducing the consumption of foods that have large toxin content like alcohol, saturated fats, coffee and sugar. Smoking is also one of the major factors to increase the toxin content in our body. Though veggies and fresh fruits are good and healthy for us, they are often coated with pesticides. Air pollution also contributes to the toxin build up in our body. Thus it would be useful if you find out in the beginning of the detoxification process what kind of toxin you have and how to get rid of them. You should also seek a doctor’s advice before undertaking any type of detoxification process particularly those on medications. Detox diets There are many approaches to detoxing; these methods can range from simple fruit juice to complicated detox diets. Water is very commonly used in detoxifying. 8 to 10 glasses of water per day helps detoxify. Tea is also used but without a sweetener. Lemon juice is also used as alternative to water. It has the nutrients needed in the detoxifying process. Lemon is very effective in cough,

cold and fever. Drink a full glass of lemon juice diluted with water repeatedly. This will cure all the three ailments. But if the fever is high and makes you thirsty, boil the water. This will reduce the body temperature and reduce the thirst. In severe cold condition required amount of honey can be added in the above mixture. You can also cut a lemon in half; add salt, ground black pepper and powdered molasses. Heat this and squeeze the juice directly on the tongue. Raw fruits and vegetables have high content of fibre and eating lots of them can help detox the digestive tract. Experts suggest consumption of raw fruits in the morning and vegetables for lunch and dinner. If the fruits and vegetables are raw or slightly cooked you get a faster and more effective detox. Make sure they are cleaned properly or are organic food if you plan to eat them raw. Side Effects One of the most common side effects is headache within the first few days of starting the detox diet, often due to caffeine withdrawal. For this reason, practitioners often suggest gradually decreasing the amount of caffeine prior to starting a detox diet. In addition, some people opt to take time off work to begin a detox diet or start the diet on the weekend. Other side effects include excessive diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and electrolyte loss. Constipation may occur if people consume excess fiber without also increasing their fluid intake. Other side effects can include tiredness, irritability, acne, weight loss, and hunger. Any worsening of symptoms or new symptoms that occur during a detox diet should prompt a visit to a qualified health professional. If a detox diet is continued for a longer time, it may result in nutrient deficiencies, particularly protein since some detox diets omit animal products and calcium. Avoiding detoxification Anyone considering a detox diet should consult a qualified health professional and/or their medical doctor first. Pregnant or nursing women or children shouldn’t go on a detox diet. People with anemia, eating disorder, diabetes, kidney disease, thyroid disease, autoimmune disease, cancer, terminal illness, certain genetic diseases, and other chronic conditions shouldn’t try this diet or should do so only under the supervision of their primary care provider. It is not intended for alcohol or drug detoxification.

GoingGreen withFashion

Eco fashion is about clothes that are not only made from fair trade and organic raw materials, but also takes into consideration consumer health issues, and longevity of the garment. By The terms ‘Green’, ‘ Eco-friendly’ are favourites when it comes to lifestyle today. But what is really eco-friendly apparel and what does it mean to use organic material? It is about making clothes that take into account the environment, the health of consumers and the working conditions of people in the fashion industry. Ecofashion apparels are made to last, so that people can use and keep them for longer. We got designer Archana Kochhar to give us the lowdown on green fashion.

What does green fashion mean? Eco-fashion clothes are made using organic raw materials, such as cotton grown without pesticides and silk made by worms fed on organic trees; these cloths don’t involve the use of harmful chemicals and bleaches to colour fabrics. Eco-savvy fashion choices mean not only reducing post-consumer refuse, but also pre-consumer waste and pollution. The basis of the eco-friendly fashion is that it doesn’t harm the environment and its reserves in any way directly or indirectly. I consciously design pieces which have more self period and

60

BEAUTY | A P R I L

2010

Nabanita Das designs which are functional and easily versatile. Simply, it is a fabric which is free from all toxins and synthetic fertilizers that take a toll on both, the environment and health. Natural products like fruits and vegetables are used to dye the fabric that it makes softer and healthier.

What makes ecofriendly fashion important? People, Planet and Profit: that’s the triple bottom line. A sustainable business doesn’t put social or environmental issues above profits – it combines strategies that meet the business’s financial realities with protecting, sustaining and enhancing the human and natural resources needed in the future. A lot of chemicals are used to turn raw materials into cloths. The procedures that the cloth making process has to go through such as bleaching, dying, sizing etc, this may often contain highly toxic heavy metals that pollute the soil and water. Thus, how an item is cared for and disposed off also has an impact on the environment. While celebrating fashion we also need to be more responsible. Even while keeping in mind that there should be no environmental

degradation, we can still create profitable and beautiful dresses. It is a unique winwin situation for both the environment and business operation.

What are the kinds of materials that can be used to make eco-friendly garments? Eco-fashion clothes are generally made with 100 percent organic cotton, bamboo fibre, hemp or cashmere. They don’t involve the use of harmful chemicals and bleaches to colour fabrics. Many of the dresses so produced are chic, elegant and sexy enough to leave people gasping with delight. Eco-fashion clothes are an attempt to keep nature clean and pure. It is an attempt to combine the needs of the society with the demands of the earth. A lot of activities have been put forward to gather the attention of the common people like Fashion Week and many more designers are also producing striking designs, styles and colours in eco-friendly cloths. With all this activities Green fashion is really grabbing the attention of many people.

Why should we adopt green garments? As globalization makes the world become smaller, it becomes increasingly easy to see how the lives of people (plants, animals and ecosystems) everywhere are closely synced up with one another. The truth is that every single thing we do every day has an impact on the planet -- good or bad. The good news is that as an individual you have the power to control most of your choices and, therefore, the impact you create is global. But embracing a greener lifestyle isn’t just about helping to preserve equatorial rain forests, it can also mean improving your health, padding your bank account, and, ultimately, improving your overall quality of life. Bottom line: It benefits everyone on the planet to help keep our wild spaces alive and growing. This is where the importance of Eco-Friendly fashion lies, by opting to choose the right cloths you are in a way trying to make the world a better place to live.

On My

MIND

What does it really mean to go green with your beauty regime? Well it is a tough question to answer. Simply because till date not too many beauty brands or buyers are giving this a thought. Going eco friendly with your beauty regime is not about making a statement but the need of the hour. There are actually many ways we can go green. While researching on this topic, i realised that there were simple things i could do that would help me towards being more eco friendly than i am today. One key thing that i feel that brands that talk about being eco friendly can do is cut down on the packaging. I think most of us do understand that packaging is just a marketing gimmick, but what really makes us want use a product again and again is the efficacy of the ingredients. So money should be spent on developing products using sustainable ingredients rather than creating brightly coloured cardboard boxes or bottles showing green trees. In fact i feel that responsible brands should actually recycle, and reuse the containers that they put their beauty potions in. One of the great ways to do this is create refillable packaging. So if as a consumer i buy a shampoo bottle, i should get an option to go to the store and get my shampoo bottle refilled once the product is over, instead of throwing the bottle in the bin and picking up another. This is a win-win situation for both – the brand can cut down on packaging cost, and the user saves some money on the product, as well as cut down on plastic junk. Or the brand can give incentives to the customer who can return empty bottles or tubs to the company – these can be reused for further packaging.

But seeing today’s scenario this might take some time. However, as an individual i can do my bit in going eco-friendly with my beauty practices. First of all instead of using one-time use cleansing towelettes to take off makeup

(they count for a lot of garbage in the bin), i try using a soft cotton or linen washcloth along with the cleanser to clean up my face. These can washed and reused. Instead of always using a body scrub for exfoliation (washing off takes up more water) I do dry body brushing once a week, or try using a natural loofah along with my body wash to slough off dead skin cells. In fact, alternating between the two exfoliation strategies makes for great skin, and guilt-free beauty. Appreciate your hair’s natural texture, apply serum, and cut down on blow drying time. You save energy and trees.
