or sometimes just for a bit of light hearted fun. Unfortunately my dog, Wilson, isn’t a great conversationalist, so having someone to listen to is a real treat. My love of podcasts led me to interview four of my favourite women (including Emma Gannon below) who have their own amazing podcasts. Have a read on page 28.

To celebrate Summer, we also have a gorgeous swimwear shoot shot by the wonderful Alexa Loy and featuring three fabulous little models. Plus there are three features with the awesome knitwear brand Knit Planet, the “Badass’ life coach, Mary Meadows and the Indian inspired kidswear company, Om Baby.

Sunshine! We don’t get much of it. But when we do, boy does it make us feel good! Everyone just seems to be living their best life when that big yellow round thing is shining in the sky! When we got our family dog a few years ago, the kids swore blind that they’d walk him. Cut to a few weeks later and lo and behold, the novelty wore off and I have been walking him ever since. But I have to admit, I am a fair weather dog walker, so feeling the warm summer sun on my skin makes my daily walks with the pooch heavenly. I use it as a time to reflect, think about where I am and give my mind a mental break. I also use my dog walking hour to listen to podcasts. Sometimes they may be business related

The rise of the podcast

odcasts... there’s no denying it. They are having a moment. It seems people love to talk but people also love to listen. And i’m no exception. From laugh out loud comedies like My Dad Wrote a Porno to funny people talking about death in Cariad Lloyds Griefcast. There are so many different genres and subjects to choose from. My

28

ultimate favourite is Adam Buxton who has interviewed the likes of Louis Theroux, Kathy Burke and Greta Gerwig and has entertained me on many a dog walk. There are many strong women killing it in the podcasting world and I talk to four of my favourites about how they started, who they love listening to and who their ultimate guest would be.

Ctrl Alt Delete A podcast exploring growing up online, social media, feminism, creativity, careers and everything in between

YES! The brilliant people who come to my live events are THE BEST. Curious and creative people between 18-35, mostly women. I was walking down Oxford Street yesterday and this really cool woman shouted “Love your podcast!” across the road and I was beaming all day. LF: What have you learnt about yourself since starting your podcast? I’ve learned how to be a better listener. To truly listen to others. To listen with the same intensity as you’d like to be listened to. We are all so busy broadcasting about ourselves all the time, but listening and learning is so important.

LF: You host two podcasts, are an author of 2 books, an events host, broadcaster and writer - you have so many strings to your bow. How do you fit everything in and what do you like to do for time out?

Emma Gannon LF: When did you start your podcast? I started my podcast Ctrl Alt Delete in April 2016. I launched it a few months before my first book (also called Ctrl Alt Delete) was coming out with Penguin - I suppose I was using the podcast as a “marketing tool” for the book, at least that’s how it started out, to spread the word about the book! I’d only planned to do 8 episodes (I didn’t realise how popular podcasting would become) and loved it SO much, then starting working with brands. Here I am, 100 episodes later…with no sign of it slowing down.

yes I think podcasts are having their ‘YouTube’ moment for sure. It feels like we’re having a podcast boom, similar to the blogging boom in the late 00s. It’s exciting! I feel like I’ve finally found my truest and most natural ‘home’ on the Internet. LF: You have another podcast, ‘Get it off your breasts’, that you co-host with Lliana Bird. It always feels like i’m invited in on a cosy chat with a good friend. Was this your intention?

LF: Is podcasting the new Vlogging? what do you think make podcasts so popular?

Ah that’s so nice to hear! Yes, we totally started it because we wanted to create a familiar, informal, fun, conversational roundtable style podcast. We want to create our own modern version of Loose Women (that isn’t anything like Loose Women).

It’s a totally different medium - audio is so much more intimate I think. But

LF: Do you feel like you are getting to know your audience?

Even though I do many things, I don’t really multi-task. I do one thing at a time and stick to it. With the podcasts, I bulk record and we release weekly. With the book I block out time and binge write. I feel so privileged to finally be in a position where I only say yes to stuff I want to do. For time-out I like to read, go for long walks, go on city breaks with my boyfriend, spa treatments if I fancy a treat, on Sundays I love doing group cinema trips with friends and having dinner after. LF: What’s your favourite podcast A) for business and B) for pleasure? I like Bruce Daisley’s “Eat Sleep Work Repeat” for work/careers stuff, and a podcast called “Hurry Slowly” for chillout time, it is all about slowing down and living life at a slower pace and I find it SO relaxing to listen to. LF: Who would be your ultimate guest? OPRAH!!!! I will visualise and manifest this until it happens! Listen to Emma’s podcast Ctrl Alt Delete on ACast here

the fringe of it Self confessed early grandmas navigating their way through millennial life and discussing everything from friendship to body issues.

charlotte jacklin & liv purvis LF: When and why did you start your podcast? We launched our podcast on Galentine’s Day this year, so it’s relatively new. After becoming friends through admiring each others work online, we recorded a couple of videos for Liv’s Youtube Channel. We loved doing it so much and both fancied doing a podcast so we thought why not give it a whirl. LF: Is podcasting the new Vlogging? 30

what do you think makes podcasts so popular? Podcasts are so popular as it’s so nice to feel like you’re listening to friends. There are so many so you can really find something that appeals to you. It’s quite habitual too. Most come out every week, so people listen to them whilst they get on with their work. LF: You were internet friends before friends IRL. How did you become so close to ultimately start a podcast together? Over the years we’d met at various events, and we’d met up to record a couple of YouTube videos. We also found

our love of fashion and shopping was something we both shared. The podcast has definitely made us better friends, it’s a great excuse to meet up with someone you like each week for a natter. LF: Do you feel like you are getting to know your audience? Yes we do, we have a Facebook group that’s really active. The first episode we launched on Galentine’s day was all about friendship. We discussed how it can be hard to make friends as an adult, and sometimes we can be lonely. I think that topic was a bit of a taboo and people really connected with it. The Facebook group is a place for people to discuss like minded topics and arrange meet ups in

their local area. It’s so lovely! LF: What have you learnt about yourselves since starting your podcast? That we probably have more in common than we thought. Also that we both feel quite passionate about growing it as much as we can, it’s great to come together with someone on a project as blogging can be quite an isolating job.

the Scummy Mummies A comedy chat show for less than perfect parents.

LF: You discuss everything from friendship to confidence to body image. Are there any subjects so far that have been difficult to tackle or any that you really want to address? We take suggestions for topics from the Facebook group so are happy to follow our listeners lead. I think we wouldn’t discuss a topic we didn’t feel knowledgable about or have some experience with. If it was a topic our listeners really wanted us to cover, we’d look at getting a guest expert on. Everything we cover has to have an element of sensitivity to it as we are only two people, so discussing body image was quite hard as you don’t want to alienate people - but it went down really well. LF: What’s your favourite podcast A) for business and B) for pleasure? We both love Desert Island Discs, it’s a classic for a reason. The High Low is always brilliant, Table Manners and we loved the Debrief too - and now Stevie and Tessa have just launched a new podcast called Nobody Panic. Can’t wait for Jen Gotch’s new podcast and lastly the Jess Lively show, The Accidental Creative and Hashtag Authentic by Sara Tasker are great for work.

Ellie Gibson & Helen thorne LF: When and why did you start your podcast?

At the moment we don’t have guests on the podcast, but that could all change! Mary Berry we’d love to chat to, Florence Welch and the Haim sisters. We should definitely start getting guests... that’s a great list!

We started the podcast in July 2013. We met at a stand-up comedy gig and discovered we had sons born 11 days apart, with the same midwife. We also lived five minutes from each other. So we started hanging out and making each other laugh about our parenting fails. We thought we’d record it and put it on the internet, and here we are!

Listen to The Fringe of it on ACast here

LF: Is podcasting the new Vlogging?

LF: Who would be your ultimate guest?

What makes podcasts so popluar? There’s room for podcasting and vlogging, just as there’s an audience for radio and TV. The thing with podcasts is you can enjoy them while doing something else, like laundry or driving, which is perhaps why they’re popular with busy mums! LF: Your hilarious podcast and live shows portray the challenges of parenthood. How did it come about? After the podcast was a hit, we decided to do a live comedy show based around the same themes. And people seemed to like it!

31

the other as they both have pros and cons but I do feel it’s a more user-friendly, accessible form of content as you’re able to listen anywhere and everywhere. On the bus, on your commute, in your office whilst you’re working. That’s definitely what drew me to podcasts when I first started listening to them. I also think it gives people the oppourtunity to get to know you more, and in turn, trust and value you. LF: I love the story behind ‘One Girl Band’ and how you created the job and life you desired. Can you tell us a bit more about your business?

LF: Do you feel like you are getting to know your audience? We love getting messages from our audience and meeting them at our shows. It’s amazing to hear that people like our stuff because it makes them feel like they’re not alone, or that they’re normal, or just because it makes them laugh. LF: What have you learnt about yourself since starting your podcast? We’ve really just learnt so much from all the amazing guests we’ve had on, from celebrities and authors to childcare experts or just our mates. LF: What do each of you love about your work wife? We both have the same attitude to work - we work hard, but we put our kids first, and there always has to be room for fun too, or it’s not worth it. LF: What’s your favourite podcast A) for business and B) for pleasure? All the podcasts we listen to are for pleasure! At the moment we are loving Happier with Gretchen Rubin and Cariad Lloyd’s Griefcast. LF: Who would be your ultimate guest?

32

Oprah. Or maybe Dolly Parton... Listen to The Scummy Mummies on acast here

Lola Hoad LF: When did you start your podcast? The One Girl Band podcast started in May 2017 (a year ago to the day that I’m writing this!). LF: Why did you start it? I wanted to widen OGB’s reach and get the message out there to even more people than we were reaching at the time. I had been creating other content like our newsletters and blog posts for a few years beforehand, and I’ve always loved the accessibility and process of podcasts so it felt like a natural progression. I felt like there were a lot of female entrepreneurship podcasts which is so great and in no way a bad thing, but I was wary of just adding to the noise so I spent a lot of time working and twisting it before I launched. LF: Is podcasting the new Vlogging? what do you think make podcasts so popular? I’m not sure whether either could replace

One Girl Band started from a purely selfish point of view if I’m honest! I started my first business, LH design (a paper goods design studio) in 2014 and in the first year, I felt incredibly lonely and isolated. I remember thinking I couldn’t talk about it though because I was meant to be ‘doing what I love’ and living the dream, but at the time, I felt awful. I was seeing all of these badass women on social media creating businesses and doing things on their own terms but the more I connected with them, the more I saw that we were all feeling exactly the same. We were feeling all of the self-doubt, lack of confidence and isolation, and social media wasn’t really helping that — it’s a breeding ground for those sort of feelings, especially when you start and you’re

One Girl Band A podcast for female entrepreneurs and creatives who work by themselves.

seeing every other business owner who looks like they have their life together (spoiler, they probably don’t!) So, I knew I needed to get these women into the same room in real life. I announced a meet up in a restaurant in Brighton and it sold out in half an hour - I realised then this was so, so needed. We ended up doing the meetups monthly, and then fast forward a few years, we now have the OGB coworking space which is a femalefocused office space for entrepreneurs and creatives who want to get their businesses off the kitchen table and into a supportive, connecting and empowering environment. LF: Do you feel like you are getting to know your audience? I feel like with the podcast, I have more of an opportunity to show myself, my voice and my message, and in turn that gets our audience to trust me more and show themselves more. They get in touch with ideas for episodes and topics they want to hear about- I get 100’s of messages a week from people saying how much the podcast has helped them and that honestly astounds me. LF: What have you learnt about yourself since starting your podcast? That something doesn’t have to be

‘perfect’ in your eyes for people to appreciate and resonate with it. I put off doing the podcast for so long because I was worried the quality or the content wouldn’t be good enough but eventually I had enough of procrastinating and just put it out there. When you’re creating something, you (and your inner critic) believe it’s this small, measly thing that no-one is going to enjoy but the more I put out, the more I see that it’s not true at all. I’ve been so surprised and so grateful for the response. LF: I love your value - ‘Community over Competition’ - how do you advise people caught up in the comparison trap? Community over competition is the notion that our businesses, and our general lives, are better when we work together, rather than against each other. It can be so easy to walk into a room full of fellow entrepreneurs and instantly see them as competition, someone to keep an eye on. But the thing is, we are all doing our own thing our own way, and that is what matters. With comparison, you just have to remind yourself that no one is you and that is your power. Yes, other people are doing something similar or what you want to be doing, but YOU haven’t done it before, therefore it’s going

to be wholly unique and different to those other businesses. The next time you feel all the comparison-y feelings when you see another freelancer or business owner announcing a new partnership or project and you find yourself thinking ‘why don’t I have that!?’, ask yourself this: ‘Do I actually want that or do I feel I ‘should’ have that?’. 9 times out of 10, you don’t want it. You have to stay in your own lane and stick to your version of success, not doing all of the things you think looks good or what other people are doing. Stick to your own purpose and goals and you’ll go so, so far. LF: What’s your favourite podcast A) for business and B) for pleasure? Business/mindset wise, I LOVE Being Boss and I Feel For You by Dionne Elizabeth. For pleasure, I have a special place in my heart for Adam Buxtons podcast (he’s the king of sponsorships and intros) and Call Your Girlfriend. LF: Who would be your ultimate podcast guest? Anyone who is making big waves in female entrepreneurship- there’s too many to choose from! Visit One Girl Band website to find out more and listen to the podcast here 33

KNIT PLANET

London based brand, Knit Planet sell stunning modern knitwear for children with a small collection for adults. The quality and sustainability of their products is at the core of the brand and they are passionate about exploring and embracing the nature of knit. Besides the quality of materials and design, all 48

products are also machine washable, anti-pilling and anti-shrinking. A game changer for parents. We love the simplicity of the gender neutral design that flows seamlessly through from season to season. We chat to designers Micky and Nikky about how it all began and what’s in store for the future.

LF Knit Planet is known for it’s contemporary and modern kids knitwear. What is it that drew you to Knitwear as a focus for your business?

that we wanted to have a baby girl too, so it was a little preparation in advance! So they can do a brother/sister twinning look!

KP We both enjoy wearing knitwear a lot, the natural sensation of knit and the materials normally used we felt the most comfy in. It’s soft, flexible and breathable, and it feels less artificial. Then we had our first baby boy who had very sensitive skin and we couldn’t easily find good clothes for him. That’s also part of the reason we chose knitwear and designed in a flexible way when we decided to do Knit Planet.

LF You are passionate about using quality materials such as organic cotton, Merino wool and Bamboo. But also sustainability is at the core of the business. Can you tell us a bit more about this and why it’s important?

LF Many of your designs are gender neutral. Was this a conscious decision from the beginning? Is it something you feel strongly about? KP Yes it is. Aesthetically we both enjoy design with simplicity, which lead us to styles that are less gender obvious, it sort of drives the focus more to the kids as well. We also have a little secret there too, we created Knit Planet because when we had our first baby boy, who led us into this wonderful little world, we knew

understand the value of it. LF You used to both work as designers. What role do you each take now at Knit Planet and how do you find working together as a couple? KP Actually Nikky (aka Knit) was from a fashion marketing and international business background when she was studying and Micky (aka Planet)

KP Using the best materials needs to stay at the core, as this is for our children, the result of love which we should all care the most of. Actually we not only use the best materials, but also every design is tested by our own children too, we ask their opinion or observe their reaction when they are younger with less ability to communicate. Of each design released, we know that each product is tailored to the need and feelings of our small users. As for sustainability, we all know consumerism has created certain effects to our life and environment, so it is a global issue. It doesn’t just matter to us as business owners, but also as parents who are the guide for our children to 49

was more from the creative world before we started the label. Then we came across each other, and all the time spent together we’ve now criss-crossed as I now take on the role of marketing/branding and management and Nikky is doing the creative work for Knit Planet! Most of the time it works really well as we can understand each other really quickly, but occasionally it takes a day or two for us to just pick a colour… maybe we are too similar now, or it may be just because we are two Libras! LF Often parents are put off buying quality knitwear due to having to handwash or wash on a delicate cycle, but all your knitwear is washable at 40 degrees. Has this been difficult to develop? KP We basically need to have both of what we love and the convenience for all the parents out there, which means it

50

takes a little longer to find the solution and a good professional producer of course. Also a little bit more investment. LF The S/S18 collection is called ‘Ice Cream Daydream’. What is this inspired by and how do you come up with new collections. KP I always felt that children are privileged for ice cream and daydreams. And last summer during a lovely afternoon, I bought an ice cream for Leo, our baby boy. I saw the smile on his face casted a whole world of satisfaction - that reminded me of when my father used to buy me ice cream when I was the same age as Leo - a time that an ice cream simply meant happiness as well as a time we kept a lot of ideas that are probably not useful but purely joyful. And it took about 3 seconds to decide to change our collection title from ‘Candy Crush’, which has some ice

cream elements, to ‘Ice Cream Daydream’. LF The women’s collection has also been very popular. Are there any plans to increase this? KP

Yes for sure!

LF I look forward to that! Finally, what’s new for Knit Planet? Are there any exciting projects in the pipeline that you can tell us about? KP We have been thinking to create a capsule collection, a crossover collaboration with other inspiring creative people/designer/parents. We first came across the idea about a year ago, and now as our baby girl is one and a half, life’s more stable and we felt the time has come. Ooh this sounds really exciting. I can’t wait to hear more. To see more of the collection visit www.knit-planet.com

Om Baby

W

hile on a trip to Goa when pregnant with her

first child, Alice Aitken bought a pair of tiny baby harems on the beach. Little did she know that this purchase would take her on a journey that would lead her

66

into starting Om Baby. When her baby girl, Edie, was born, Alice quickly found that these classic yoga harems were the perfect shape for the movements that babies make. Plus their roomy size and drop crotch meant that they were perfect for cloth nappy wearers like Edie.

India is Alice’s ‘spritual home’ and her love of the country along with it’s colour, craft and textiles showed her an opportunity to combine all her passions of India, textiles, fashion and of course, her daughter to create Om Baby. She set about creating her first pair of classic unisex harems using beautifully hand printed cotton that would last, could be passed down and also fit little cloth bums! The collection has grown to 10 pieces now, mainly unisex but on the request of Edie who is going through a girly phase, a dress has been added in! Alice’s absolute favourite piece is the Omsie which is a gorgeous harem style all-in-one. Perfect for little crawlers! All products are printed by hand using natural and eco dyes. The cloth is then shipped to London where the garments are all hand made to order. This saves on wastage and keeps things really personal too. This year Alice went on her 2nd sourcing trip to India where she met more of the makers and also had the oppportunity to see, first hand, the art of the block printing and dyeing process. She was incredibly inspired while visiting a small village in Rajasthan called Akola which is home to a few families that have been block printing and indigo dying for generations. They use a printing technique called Dabu. A paste is made

using mud, lime, wheat powder and tree gum which is then rubbed through fine gauze to create a smooth paste. This is then put onto the white fabric

My hope is that we never lose this ancient craft that has been handed down through skilled artisans over many generations using blocks and then sawdust is added afterwards to harden. This is then dried, dipped in the indigo pots and laid out to dry and fix in the sun. This incredible art form is dying out, so Alice tries to visit as often as she can in order to learn and share the techniques. Her hope is that by celebrating it, using it and loving it, we never lose this ancient craft that has been handed down through skilled artisans over many generations. After studying a Fashion Print Degree at Brighton university, Alice moved on to trend forecasting. She still works as head of trends and insights for a global branding company four days a

week, so she knows her stuff! Om Baby is growing as a side hustle while Alice grows her family, but the dream is to set up a social enterprise scheme to re-skill young mums in the UK to cut and sew the Oms while Alice continues to work with the skilled people in India. She is interested in exploring the use of Hemp as a Cotton alternative due to it’s sustainability, so this is next on the agenda. Alice believes that the best thing about her business is the love she has for the products. Parents who buy into the brand are all so positive and it makes her so incredibly proud of what she has achieved and makes all the hard work worth it. On a recent trip to Bali she did a mini Om shoot and also picked up vintage Batik printed sarongs, another hand printing technique. Alice is busy making these into a one off limited-edition ‘Om Baby Bali ‘capsule collection coming out really soon. We are inspired by her passion for the craft of hand blocking and her vision to keep this incredibly skillful yet dying craft alive. Take a look at the collection over at www.om-baby.co.uk

Going from a job you hated to a successful interiors business in only a few years is testament to your hard work and determination. What is it specifically that you love about interior design and what drives you to succeed?

I mean I have to caveat that by saying I’ve always known I wanted to work for myself and I had done for years before I ended up in the job I hated. I ended up there because I did the typical thing of having a new baby and panicking about income so I went and got an employed job. Mistake number one as I’m soooo not employable! Anyway back to the question! I don’t particularly love anything more about interior design than I do other creative avenues. I just love having an idea and then seeing it realised. Creating is where my passion is which is why I’ve worked in music, business, makeup and interiors.

A Rebel Stylist The no nonsense interiors blogger, Sarah Akwisombe chats to Little Flea about all things interiors and her love for vintage furniture Your ‘no bull’ approach to social media is something you’re well known and loved for. Have you always had this mindset or has this grown over the years? I think the ‘no bull’ bit has always been me. Sadly I think some of it stems from a slight lack of being empathetic - my mum and sister would always say I’d just turn up and say the most blunt things that would sometimes upset or offend them and to me it just seemed like a normal comment. I’m that person! So I think it translates well into business and socials as people often just want to hear things straight up without the faff. Need to work on the social skills though, ha! 76

Your love for bold colours, vintage furniture and 50s design shines through in your photography and styling. How do you advise people to find their own style while renovating their projects? It just comes down to filtering out all the shite that comes out about trends and instead honing in on when you see stuff that makes you happy. That’s why I go for vintage stuff a lot - it can’t really be super influenced by trends - you’re either drawn to it or you’re not. A lot of it is nostalgia. Things that you connect to, stuff you liked when you grew up. Or a certain aesthetic that you’re particularly drawn to. You also need to be bold and have balls to go against what’s currently considered ‘cool’ by the media. The courses you offer such as the

‘Money + Manifesting’ course and the ‘Insta School’ course have been hugely popular. Can you tell us a bit more about them? Money + Manifesting is all about attracting money and good stuff into your life. It teaches you how to use the law of attraction and a positive money mindset to get past the stress of money and start enjoying all the great things you can attract into your life. Insta School is how to use instagram for small businesses and brands. Building engagement, driving sales and building a following all organically. You and your husband, Jason have recently made the brave move to start working together. How has that been for you as a couple? Really great! Since he joined we’ve taken way more money than I did alone which just goes to show how much having a team around you makes a difference. We have completely different ways of working. I’m very creative and think in a weird out of the box way and he’s very logical and sensible. So we totally clash at times but overall I think it works very well in business. Lastly, can you tell us about any future plans you may have? Do you have any exciting projects you can tell us about? Haha I am laughing at this question because if I listed out all the projects that I am working on I would sound like a crazy person! I always have about ten ideas on the go at once. I try and start them all and then see which ones make it through. I’m planning a sensory installation in Croydon for next summer, as well as a couple of video content series ideas. I have more courses lined up in things like personal branding and also property investing for beginners. What else... oh a book! See, so many. Ask me in a year which ones made it to fruition... We can’t wait to find out. Follow Sarah over on Insta @sarahakwisombe or on her business page @nobullschool. You can also visit her website www.nobullbusinessschool.com

The Badass Coach

T

he pressures of family life, relationsips and work all take their toll on our

well-being. This fast-paced, digital world can create feelings of insecurity and judgement that can casue an overwhelming sense of unworthiness, shame and fear. The constant reams of information thrown at us by

90

the media and social media can wear us down resulting in our own self worth to suffer. So what is the answer? Well Mary Meadows believes that life coaching can help. It can give you a new perspective and teach us how to empower ourselves through various tools and techniques to live a more balance life. Read on to find out more.

Mary is a single mum to a little 6 year old boy, Albie. She has been a qualified life coach and NLP practitioner for nearly three years and she can help you build a lasting relationship with your mind to help you improve and sustain your mental health. Mary’s mission is to make women feel good about themselves and to help them develop the skills they need to live their best life. Life is hard, and we make it harder on ourselves by beating ourselves up for decisions, choices or behaviours that we make usually with other people in our minds. Now is the time to put YOU first, decide what YOU want, how YOU want to live, and Mary will be your cheerleader until you can shake those pom poms yourself! Mary is ALL about the ACTION, inspiring and empowering you to ignore the stuff you can’t control and focus on the stuff you can, stop doing the stuff that makes you feel rubbish, and do more of what you LOVE. Living your best life, however that looks for you, starts here. Mary’s best life involves the practice of being present. If we don’t take the time to practice being still, taking a breath and just being, instead of doing all the time, we can quickly feel unable to focus, feel overwhelmed, stressed and unhappy. Life goes at 100mph, this is most of our realities, we lead busy lives with ‘big noise’ coming at us from all

different directions. The biggest gift we can give ourselves is being able to stop even just for a moment and notice what’s going on, notice our choices, notice our behaviours and notice how we are feeling. Also remembering that everything is a practice, there is no ‘tadaahhh’ moment, no certificate that says you have your sh*t together. Mary offers various different options if you want to get involved. Life coaching online starts from just £7 per month. Then for a more in depth partnership, there are 1-2-1 sessions or there are online workshops and Badass pep talks to give you the skills you need to move

If I want to change something, if I need to change something or if a change is forced upon me... Only I have the power. I have a choice in how I react.

forward and take action.

• Mary’s top 5 tools and techniques for a happy healthy mind. 1. IT’S NOT TRUE. Most of the time our thoughts about and around something are simply not true. Pause and ask yourself - is it true? 2. BREATHE. Make sure your breaths are long and deep. Feel your ribs expanding. Practice. 3. TALK TO SOMEONE. To a friend or partner about something that’s troubling you. Come up with some strategies together that might help. 4. JOY LIST. Make a list of things that bring you joy. It could be as simple as sitting on the sofa with a cup of tea or a walk in the park. Try to write down at least three things. 5. PAUSE. Stop what you are doing. Notice how you are feeling. Giving ourselves permission to feel it is one of the greatest tools to self development. It is ok to feel sad sometimes. Visit Mary’s website at www.marybadassmeadows.com 91

We Love We love... the strong and positive merchandise from Mutha.Hood that aims to empower women and kids. From the classic ‘Strong Girls Club’ tees and sweats to the new ‘Like a Girl’ tee that redefines what the words Like a Girl actually means. We love... These simple activity sets and gifts from Cotton Twist. From party bag fillers to keepsake tins, there’s something to suit all children. Kids always love to do crafts and be creative, especially on a rainy day and you can choose from so many kits including bracelet making kits to superhero masks. Plus their personalised items make a unique gift for someone special too.

92

We love... The gorgeous nightwear and accessories from premium brand, Atticus & Gilda. Inspired by the theatre, you’ll find items from traditional bloomers to beautifully made sleep masks. We love these incredible travel bags for both boys and girls that include a pyjama set or nightdress of your choice, organic lip balm, wooden hairbrush, sleep mask and bamboo toothbrush. The perfect sleepover gift!

We love... The instantly recognisable Mama Merch from Mère Soeur that has become a strong message of solidarity and support in motherhood. Through the simple slogan tees to the enamel pins and mugs, the collection also includes a range of super cute kids tees. Our fave is this ‘Alright For a Mum’ slogan tee! 93

We Love

We love... Zero Fox and their brand new designs for Spring Summer. Born from a loathing of pink = girls and blue = boys, Zero Fox have created edgy unisex kidswear for mini warriors with individuality. This new fist pump ‘boom’ tee is our new favourite and comes in black, grey and white.

We love... The beautiful selection of Indian inspired artisanal clothing and interiors from Dilli Grey. These beautiful hand blocked pyjamas have a stunning metallic paisley design and this yellow patched print floral dress (above) by Anokhi is the perfect summer dress. Take a look online at their stunning accessories, quilts and cushions. 94

We love... supersoft organic baby blankets and these ones by Hope and Fortune are as soft and pure as your baby. Made using ethical organic cotton with zero nasties, they are designed to be wrapped, cuddled, nuzzled and loved for years to come.

We love... vintage clothing, so Manifesto Woman (above) is our go to site for buying and selling premium second hand and vintage clothing and accessories. You’ll find a brilliant edit of a wide range of designer brands such as Stella McCartney, Gucci and Isabel Marant alongside boutique labels and high street stores.

We love... Anna and Louis for their classic and traditional designs chosen from a selection of curated Spanish brands. The collection includes a range of items from smart trousers and shirts to adorable baby outfits. This pretty little skirt with removable braces (above) would make the cutest party outfit and this soft knitted one-shoulder top and matching bloomers (right) are just divine as a new baby gift. 95

We Love

We love... the fun collection of baby clothing by Lazy Baby. Organic, sustainable and fairtrade, these super cute slogan tees, babygrows and hoodies are designed to reflect the fun and positive lifestyle of their parents. For mini surfers, snowboarders, DJ’s or even fishermen, there’s something to suit every baby and their funloving parents!

96

We love... Jake and Maya clothing and their commitment to sustainable kids clothing and zero waste design. They have designed a collection using organic cotton, water based inks and natural dyes and are all ethically made. The problem with kids clothing and land fill is that children grow out of their clothes too fast. So Jake and Maya garments all have adjustable features and are multifunctional helping to extend the lifetime of each item. Genius!

We love... the beautiful collection of breastfeeding occasionwear By Ricia. For mamas needing to feed their babies at wedding or parties but wanting a bit of privacy, these dresses and tops are discreet as well as luxurious. Ricia also makes a £10 donation with each direct purchase to the gorgeous charity Mummy’s Star which supports women diagnosed with cancer during their pregnancy or shortly after giving birth.
