Life after Baby Loss Donna Tweedale chats to Elle from Feathering The Empty Nest about life after the unimaginable
38
I’ve interviewed many women and can take pen to paper and it flows. Approaching this interview has played on my mind, so many more thoughts. And this comes from a feeling of responsibility. To you, reading it, and to Elle. I’m not writing this to exploit Elle’s grief, not in the slightest. It’s an
interview where I try to understand, empathise. To approach Elle to share her experiences and open that with an ‘I’m So Sorry’, feels like an insufficient response to Elle and her husband Nico’s heartache. Elle, Thank you for taking the time. Genuinely.
LF: Within just my small group of friends there are sadly a few who have experienced the grief of infant loss. With campaigns from Tommy’s Charity and through you sharing your personal experiences, women are feeling more open to sharing their stories. But there’s still more to be done with offering better support to friends, family. When saying ‘I’m just so sorry’ just doesn’t feel like it’s enough. In terms of support, breaking down the taboo, What do you think we can do better?
it can be really difficult to know what to say. All I can say from my experiences is that saying something rather than nothing is always better; nothing is more deafening than silence. Losing a child can feel like such an isolating experience; it’s so important that we let that person know they aren’t alone, and that we aren’t afraid to say their childs name. That was the motivation for my book, and it’s title, Ask Me His Name. It’s letting people know that I want to talk about Teddy.
EW: I think talking is a good start, and not being afraid to speak about the loss of a child or pregnancy. I think it’s one of those things that we just find so shocking and upsetting that sometimes
LF: You recently marked Teddy’s 3rd Birthday. Teddy’s legacy and your work continues to make a significant difference to other families not only in the support you’ve created within
the instagram community, but also by funding incredible equipment for the NICU. That’s huge.Talk to us about that moment where you were able to approach the hospital and say, in Teddy’s name. ‘Here have this’. EW: Well firstly, thank you for being so kind. If I am honest it didn’t really happen like that. We do all of Teddy’s fund-raising through JustGiving and so the money raised goes directly to the NICU from there; so it’s not really a case of me giving it to them. I like to think of it as a collective effort from all of the wonderful people who have supported our fundraising in Teddy’s name, that is continually feeding into the support of the charity, and helping to care for those sick and premature babies. I always said from the start of our fundraising, that if we could prevent just one family from leaving hospital without their baby, then it would all be worth it. I am really lucky now that I volunteer on the charity committee group, so I get to help make the decisions of where and how the funds raised are spent. It’s a really special feeling to be able to go back to the NICU and know that our efforts there will be helping families every single day. LF: You write so openly, you articulate where you are, where your heads at so clearly. Has your blog, your book been a form of therapy for you would you say? EW: Absolutely, and I don’t think I realised just how much I needed to write that blog for my own therapy until I was about 6 months into writing. The book is an extension of so many of the experiences and subjects I touch on in 39
40
LF: And in addition to your writing, you have a great eye and creativity within your love of interiors. You’ve conquered some big projects in your home, Your kitchen looks beautiful. So, what’s next?
my blog posts; it’s our whole story from the beginning with Teddy and how we came to where we are now. Writing has been, and continues to be, an incredibly cathartic thing for me to do; I just really hope that my writing serves to help a few other people along the way too.
EW: Oh well, after this recent project I think we might need to take a little break! We have been living in a building site the past 4 months, and we aren’t quite finished just yet with this project. I think once everything is back to normal I would quite like to have a little break from renovations for the rest of this year (at least), and give ourselves time to enjoy the new space we have created in the house and garden. We still have plans for the house; a loft extension and we are also hoping to create a garage and work space at the top of our garden, but we don’t have an exact timeline of when those things will happen just yet. LF: Lastly. We can’t finish without asking after Boris. How is the gorgeous little guy?
EW: He’s great! Boris is always great. I love pugs and I wouldn’t have any other dog. He has been the best companion and friend to me since Teddy died (I have said before that when I went on maternity leave I think Boris was certain I had given up work to become his life partner and primary carer, haha!). I love that I get to work from home now and he’s always by my side; we have our little routine, places we like to walk and he sleeps next to me in the day when I am working. He is the sweetest little soul and I only wish that I could wake up each day with the excitement and enthusiasm for life that he has; it’s honestly like he opens his eyes each morning and cannot believe that he gets to do it all again. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all lived life like that? It would be wouldn’t it? Thank you, Elle for talking so openly to us. You can buy Elles book from all good bookshops or from Amazon here Follow Elle on instagram at @feathering_the_empty_nest.

ing as I was planning product collections for a new home before we actually moved in. I have always created mood boards, years ago it used to just be huge sheets of paper and a good old pritt stick. I love Pinterest You have some stunning prints available and display them beautifully in your home. A little chicken and egg type of question for you….Do you work a room around the art you love, or do you source the pieces to work in the room?
hayley southwood Written by Donna Tweedale
Hayley Southwood is most probably one of the most open, passionate women you’d meet. Her enthusiasm for her businesses, her very real support for other women in business is infectious. Always one step ahead recently Hayley rebranded her Scandinavian interiors store Southwood Stores. To what is now Southwood Living. A totally different shopping experience from start to finish. Where you can see what products look like within a homely setting before you buy them. From beautifully simple vases to grand nordic mirrors, her instagram feed is her shop front if you like. Hayley has a great eye for beautifully made pieces sourced from some wonderful independent brands, artists. 70
Hayley, Your taste in interiors has evolved over the years and you’ve totally adapted to your new surroundings. Your new home is seriously beautiful. Congratulations. How you recognised the way people are choosing to shop online, the impact Instagram has had on the world of interiors and how you’ve combined the 2 to be able to offer your customers a really unique experience, is so exciting. When you first viewed your new space did you know instantly the potential it could have, and the impact on your interiors business? Yes!!! We were definitely viewing houses with the new concept in mind. Whichever house we found really needed to work for us on so many levels. We couldn’t believe our luck when we stumbled across this beauty. You’ve really hit the ground running in the renovations you’re undertaking. And they’re looking fantastic. When it comes to approaching designing a new space do you have a rough idea and roll with it? Or, are you more of a Pinterest, Mood Board and lists kind of girl? Oh blimey I pinned and planned for months ahead. I found it really challeng-
A bit of both I guess... I’m lucky enough to have built relationships with amazing artists. Sometimes one of our artists will create a collection for a room especially for us. The collection from ‘What Phil Sees’ for instance was suggested by him to fit that room. From the many beautiful corners of your home, where do you find yourself? Tell us about your favourite place to go. Cuppa in hand gravitating to for a moments peace? It’s really funny because I’m definitely still in honeymoon period. Every room and little corner feels so different. We’ve been here six months and I’m enjoying the newness. I love sitting outside in the morning with a cup of coffee. When I’m inside I like to sit by the wood burner in the dining room on my beautiful ercol bench. What 2 pieces are you loving from Southwood Living right now? Gosh this is a really hard question because I love every single piece I stock. The new concept means every single item is selected with love and passion. If I don’t truly love the item it just cannot be included. That is completely different from the old shop of course! In the old shop it was more about giving my customers lots of choice, the new way to shop is the complete opposite. The collections are very small and have to be fully aligned with my interior passions. Could you share with us 3 interiors pieces you’re loving from Little Flea’s interiors brands?
Oooh I adore Adele from Nutmeg Wall Art. That is one talented lady and I love her new Ikea hack collection. So clever. Another one of my favourite Little Flea brands is Scandiborn. If mine were little again.. oh my goodness I’d have a field day. I am so in love with the little kitchen. Also, that bedside Hugg sleep cot from Bababou is genius! What a great idea and looks aesthetically amazing.

Beach Vibes By Donna Tweedale The perfect swimsuit is an elusive beast. It’s up there with the perfect jean and the perfect white Tee. It’s a piece to be given time, consideration and investment. I urge you. Please don’t grab something off the rail at the airport while waiting for your gate number. If you give your swimwear consideration and investment it will give back to you for years to come. You don’t NEED a new swimsuit for every day of your holiday. You need 1 or 2 really good options that work hard for you. If the thought of swimwear brings
you out in hives, break it down. Think about what you want from it. What you need. Don’t get swept up in the romantic notions of poolside lounging if the reality is actually likely to be water parks and jumping waves with the kids. It’s hugely important to wear a size that feels good and fits comfortably. There are some great 2-piece combinations out there that allow you to mix and match styles and tones for bottoms and the top to suit your proportions. If you feel comfortable, you’ll feel more confident.
77
There are some beautiful 2 pieces with a higher waist brief which, if you want to feel more secure around your mid section the structure of them with the higher cut accentuates the hips with a nod to the vintage 50’s swimwear silhouettes. If you have a larger bust go for something with an athletic line and good straps to support you. Lucky Sew and Sew has created a beautiful line of swimwear that fully embrace curves.
Bikini, top £20 and bottoms, £16 Lucky Sew and Sew
This long sleeved one piece from & Other Stories is so practical for getting stuck into playing with the kids in the pool… mishap free... wear it out of water with denim cut offs, a Panama hat and trainers. There are some incredible brands causing disruption to the industry with their approaches to sustainability and their all inclusive ethos. New to this season one of my favourite underwear brands The Nude Label are releasing a swimwear range, their colour ways and quality of finish on their products is impressive, if they can translate that into their new swimwear, this label will be one to watch. Also along a similar aesthetic, with equally strong values are brands 05 Studio and Pansy & Co with gorgeous colour ways that you can combine to create the look you want. On the high street Arket use a material called Econyl which is constructed using yarn from nylon waste and recovered fishing nets. This technical fabric performs so well on the body, and the swimwear is fully lined to offer support and a gorgeous finish. 78
Clockwise from top: Long sleeve, £59 & Other Stories. Stripy bikini top, £35, bottoms, £35 Cos. Navy swimsuit, £110 Studio B. Black swimsuit, £89 Seafolly. Green swimsuit, £35 Arket
Bikini from The Nude Label
At the first hint of summer the high street is rammed with coordinating ranges of kaftans, hats, swimwear, bags, towels, flip flops all matchy matchy. You really don’t need to go all in. In terms of cover ups consider a simple oversized cotton or linen shirt that you can wear at other opportunities. Or a kimono that you can enjoy with a Tee and denim when you’re back home. Working it harder. You can use your accessories to inject some colour or print to embrace any trends. If you opt for minimal tones or a block colour in your swimwear, you can enjoy detail in your accessories. A headscarf is a great way to add interest as well as protecting your hair, Liberty have some great tutorials on their YouTube channel. FROZEN BANANA CHOC LOLLIES Bananas make a brilliantly easy frozen treat. Covering in delicious chocolate makes it feel like a real treat and will appeal to the whole family. ______________________________________
Makes 6 lollies
Carefully insert lollipop sticks into the halved banana, place on a baking tray and cover loosely with cling film.
3 bananas, peeled and halved
Transfer to the freezer to freeze for a few hours.
200g milk chocolate, broken into pieces
Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, making sure that the base of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir the chocolate until completely melted.
2 tablespoons chopped nuts 2 tablespoons sprinkles
Remove the bananas from the freezer and use a teaspoon to cover each banana lolly in chocolate. Working quickly, scatter half the bananas in nuts and half in sprinkles so that they stick to the melted chocolate before the chocolate sets. Place the bananas back on the baking tray and cover with cling film again. Freeze for another few hours until completely frozen.
Tips: You can vary the finishing touches with this iced dessert - try a drizzle of peanut butter or a sprinkle of freeze-dried raspberries. You could also try coating in melted white or dark chocolate too.

TRAFFIC LIGHT ICE LOLLIES These colourful ice lollies are perfect for little hands to hold and enjoy on a hot summer’s day. The different fruits make for a fun mix of flavours and textures. ______________________________________
Makes 6 ice lollies 6 strawberries About 8–10 pineapple chunks
Chop up all the fruit into similar sized small pieces. Start by putting a layer of strawberries in the base of your lollipop moulds, followed by pineapple and then finishing with kiwi.
1–2 kiwi
Pour in a little coconut water so that each mould is full and then carefully insert the lolly stick.
Coconut water, to top up
Transfer to the freezer for 4 hours, or overnight, to freeze.
Tips: Turn these into rainbow ice lollies, by adding some other coloured fruit – blueberries, orange, mango etc. If your little ones would rather a blended texture, you could still achieve the layered look by blending and freezing each layer in turn to build up the colours.

WATERMELON & MINT SLUSHIE This refreshing iced drink will bring a hint of the tropics to your kitchen. You could even go all-out kitsch and add a paper umbrella! ______________________________________
Makes 2–3 slushies 1/2 medium-sized watermelon
Remove the skin from the watermelon and cut into wedges. Remove and discard the seeds and cut the flesh into chunks.
Sprig of fresh mint leaves
Add the watermelon chunks, mint leaves and ice cubes to a high-speed blender and pulse to a slushie consistency.
1 glass of ice cubes
Pour into two glasses and enjoy straightaway.
Tips: Add some coconut water for added hydration, minerals and to make a longer drink. This mixture is also great as an ice lolly – just pour into silicone ice pop moulds and freeze. Try different tropical fruits and flavours to suit your family’s tastes. For example, pineapple and a splash of coconut milk; strawberry and mint (or basil); melon and mango…

We Love
We love... The gender neutral not colour neutral nightwear and accessories by Lola + Blake. The range was created out of a love for colour and design, and a desire to inspire creativity in their little one’s imaginations on a genderfree basis. Having had both a son and daughter; creator Kat felt there was a need in the market for great quality, unisex nightwear that moved away from the standard neutral colour palette. The pieces are created to be handed down and stand the test of time both in design-quality + appearance. We love... The collective project by New York-based designers Teasy Shiruo Sun and Friszi Tianyang Jin. Comprised of handmade interactive garments, the timeless pieces are inspired by an original children’s story written by the designers themselves. The collection aims to educate adolescent life values and encourage imagination through its innovative, playful and earth-friendly textile design.
