A Children’s Adventurous Guide to Eastbourne
Foreword
Welcome to Eastbourne
by Lizzie Enfield
There are several sides to every city and generally something in them for everyone, but that’s not always apparent, especially if it’s adults deciding where to go and what to see. Who knew there was so much on offer in this sun drenched East Sussex town? I certainly didn’t until I dropped in on the Little Green Pig writers’ club to meet children hard at work, putting together a travel guide. Eastbourne is busy reinventing itself as a contemporary seaside resort with a busy town centre and, as the children who have written this brilliant guide will tell you, a great place to live with masses to see and lots to do.
From secret coves and shopping centres, sweet stalls and ice cream parlours, to the sporty spots, skateboard parks and of course the ubiquitous Eastbourne Pier. This guide is a wonderful mix of facts, information and enticing descriptions of places to visit. And, it’s an amazing showcase of the sparky minds and creative imaginations of the children involved. Read on, start exploring and then get up and get out there! Lizzie Enfield, freelance travel writer and novelist.

Clarks
EASTBOURNE BN21 3NW
35-36 THE BEACON, EASTBOURNE BN21 3NW
If you are looking for something to do, go to the Beacon Centre. You can get yummy food, buy colourful clothes, try on fancy earrings and see great toys. One of the best things to do in Eastbourne is go to the many restaurants in the Beacon, where you can go for breakfast, lunch and dinner! - Bourne writer
In the Beacon Centre, there are a lot of shops for both kids and adults! Inside, there are a lot of lights and people. I can smell perfume and cosmetics in some places. There are also a lot of stands. Some are colourful with clothes and toys. - Filip
There is a massive shopping centre called Beacon, and I’m happy because it doesn’t rain in here. You can find my favourite shop here, Flying Tiger. When shopping, I like buying things like the iPhone 11 Pro that are trending now. There is an American candy shop called Watsons. Shakeaway has yummy milkshakes, which I’ve had twice: the Buenos Big milkshake and the Maltesers Big One! They were really yummy. There is an Indian restaurant called Tuk Tuk and my mum has been twice but I’m going to go for my first time next week. You can find a jewellery shop inside called Lovisa, which sounds like my name, Luiza! - Luiza
The Beacon has a lot of shops. I like Clarks, the shoe shop. In Clarks, there is a room with children’s shoes and another room for adult shoes (and they are quite cheap!) This is where I bought my glowing shoes. I give Clarks an A+ as you can get different shoes from glittery ones that light up to shoes with stripes. My favourite shoes are the glittery shoes. - Asia

The pick & mix sweet shop has a huge number of sweeties. Their biggest seller is the Original toffee crumble. Be careful if you can’t have dairy as they have a lot of dairy things in the shop!
In Lush, you can smell nice scents like lavender mint. There’s a sour smell when you go in. You will be tempted to steal all the soaps! Lush is so popular it is filled with lots of people everyday. The soaps look so cool, but they are expensive. The facemasks are colourful and cool. The bath jellies are squishy and cute. The shop lady is nice and now I have touched the soaps, my hands smell nice. I would recommend Lush for gifts and special occasions. It’s a nice place to go to.

I love the shop Lush. It has very nice smells and I really like it. When I go, I can touch cool things. I really love the colours and smells and looking at the bubbly bath things.
In the Beacon shopping centre, there is a giant circle table filled with candy and toffee. They have Original Toffee and they taste amazing. The worker’s name is Molly and her favourite sweets are fizzy bubble gum. They are also my favourite!
You can find the Carphone Warehouse in the Beacon where you can buy lots of iPhones! The best iPhone is iPhone ‘Pro’. The shop sign is bright white inside. They test brand new phones.
There is a sweet shop in the Beacon Centre with lots of sweets. Some are blue, some are red and some are yellow. When I tried some of the sweets, they were so yummy. My favourite sweets are pink pigs because they taste like pink and white chocolate with salt. - Daniel M

Eat McDonald’s 51 BEACON CENTRE, EASTBOURNE BN21 3QP
McDonald’s Big Macs are nice and smell good. They are double the size of normal burgers. It’s my favourite meal with a banana milkshake. - Bourne writer
McDonald’s is a wonderful place, especially all the different kind of mouth watering burgers and tasty chips. If you don’t like eating meat, don’t worry because there are fish burgers. There are also yummy desserts and most have cream or chocolate.
KFC 29-31, LANGNEY RD, EASTBOURNE BN21 3QA
I love McDonald’s burgers, especially Big Macs. They are so tasty, the size and smell are amazing and they taste like a dream. I could fall asleep in McDonald’s. - Bourne writer
In McDonald’s, I love the chicken nuggets especially the 6 or 20 packs. Why? Because they are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I’m craving some and I can always taste them. The one thing I hate when I’m going outside is that seagulls come and take my chicken nuggets off my plate.
KFC is an amazing chicken place in Eastbourne because they cook the chicken very well and the skin is crispy in a good way. It smells so great, and it doesn’t take long to make so you only have to wait a couple of minutes. I recommend getting the Family Feast and the big bottle of cola. - Fiona
I like KFC as their chicken is very juicy. It’s an amazing place. Their food is so good. My favourite drink is the Oreo milkshake. It’s the best fast food place in the world. There’s so much choice it’s so difficult to choose what to eat! - Finn
KFC is the best place to get chicken. The chicken is mouth watering and it is ‘finger lickin’ good’! The chips and the BBQ sauce is delicious. Instead of having a normal picnic, get a KFC. - Louis

Eastbourne Pier 3 GRAND PARADE, EASTBOURNE BN21 3EL
The pier is one of the most popular places in Eastbourne. It has a bell that rings every day. It was first built in 1919. It was set on fire, but don’t worry because it was rebuilt. You can buy ice cream sometimes. My favourite flavour is honeycomb and mint chocolate chip. - Seth
The pier was built in 1919 and burned down in 2006. It was rebuilt in 2007. An old bell sounds at 12 o’clock each day. It shakes the pier. It’s very expensive to keep the pier in good condition. Sometimes they have to close the pier to do repairs. - Ahmet
The pier is one of the most beautiful places in Eastbourne that many people go to visit.
If you go on, you can have a look at the top to see the date 1919.
I would recommend going to the pier, it’s a fun and entertaining place. Standing in front of the pier, it is so colourful and bright and it has lots of fun things on it. It has a tuck shop, so if your parents say you can get a treat, you can just pop in there.
There are a lot of games at Eastbourne Pier and picnic benches. There are wooden planks you walk on. I can smell a lot of sweets there. You can see the water, speedboats and paddling boats from the pier.
At the end of the pier, you can go fishing if you can’t afford some dinner.
Eastbourne Pier is an incredible place, full of restaurants for you to go to. You can also play games at the Arcade and places that play jazz for your mum and dad to go to. You must go now!
If it’s hot and sunny, you can come to the beach next to the pier. I think the pier is one of the best places to go because at the start you can get ice cream, fish and chips and candy just before you get on. So, you can wander around looking at the beautiful view and you can pop into the arcade on the pier to have a bit of a rest from walking. It’s free and it’s open seven days a week, so come here while it’s one of those days.

Eastbourne Beach I like rain because of the smell. It is fresh when you touch the rain and you get as wet as the ocean. - Cosmin
I like the sea because I like to swim in it. I love food, and my favourite is fish and chips. If you get the perfect type of day, there is a coral reef in Holywell at low tide. There are lots of slippery seaweed and crabs that can pinch you there! When a crab sees another crab, it attaches to it. They can be quite vicious – I’ve learnt that much. - Seth
The rocks on Eastbourne beach are sometimes smooth and sometimes rough. I love to touch them. - Bourne writer
The beach has rocks and sand. When I go, I see the water and people swimming like fish. I also see lots of boats.
I like walking my dog along the beach. It is a good place to walk your dog, but be careful of all the dog poo!
The seagulls are white and silver like a rock.
If you come to Eastbourne on a rainy day, never bring your favourite umbrella. Every wave of the sea will splash on you if you go too close. Always bring a picnic with you. Come and take photos of the beautiful scenery and hear the waves splatter across the beach.
Sometimes the seagulls try to get my ice cream and fish and chips! - Bourne writer
The beach is the best thing about Eastbourne: it has the sea that I like and I can hear the birds there. I like to feel rocks, taste the water and smell the food. Sometimes, I hate birds because they poop on my dad’s car! Stay away from birds or they will poop on your car or you! - Bourne writer
At the beach, there are lots of big and small rocks. You can see a lot of ice cream shops. When I lick the ice cream, it is so delicious; when I bite the ice cream, it freezes my teeth. There are lots of different flavours like chocolate, strawberry, banana, bubble gum and lots of others. - Wanda

Come to Eastbourne because it has a lot of beaches to go to, especially by the pier. There are hidden rocks and secret stones next to the pier in Eastbourne. I found a rock once. I was looking in the bushes, and I found a rock that had a secret message on it. They have writing or pictures on them. I found one easily, so do look out for them.

South Downs National Park (The Downs) It can be especially windy on the nearby Downs. There is a big statue that represents the people who died in the war. Near there, you can find a beautiful secret cove. There is a path that leads down to the windy, fresh, beautiful and wonderful cove. Seagulls chatter noisily like a devil cackling. The smell is so fresh and makes you feel wonderful. The smell is also salty, refreshing and clean. The water is cool and it glimmers in the sunshine. It is a delightful feeling. If you want to see the cove, make sure you go when the tide is out otherwise you won’t be able to see it. Rivers swirl and whirl over the hill, it looks like a sapphire slug sliding up and down the hills. The scent on the downs is wonderful: you can smell gorgeous flowers in the colours of gold, amethyst, ruby, sapphire, blush pink. The grass is emerald green.
There is a swish of salt because the sea is in front of you.
The Seven Sisters country park is also a wonderful place. Rivers of royal blue snakes slide gracefully over the seaweed green grass. On a boiling hot day, the rivers are as cool as a cola. It is delightful to dip your toes in! Don’t worry, the water is as clear as a dish that has just been taken out of the dishwasher. Just remember - you must take your rubbish home, there are no bins at the Seven Sisters. You can also hire a boat and you can sail it over the crystal-clear water. If you walk further on, you will see a little path. If you follow that path, you will pass bushes and go on a blackberry hunt. There are lots of wildflowers of crimson red, against the sky blue and lots of other wonderful colours. I like the countryside because it looks beautiful and it smells clean and fresh. You can see lots of rabbits and different insects. - Marli
Beachy Head is a tall cliff and has great views. The tide changes very often. Down on the beach, you can make amazing sand sculptures. Why not take the black sand and make a moat around a sculpture! - Dylan

The Towner Art Gallery is a very creative place, and all the art is so amazing! When I went, there was a new wall and they coloured it by painting a new wall on the front. It was like all their paintings were mixed up together! The Towner has millions of paintings and there’s a place they keep all the art there. It has some old ones, some music and some amazing styles. - Ella
The lift in the Towner gallery is so big because sometimes they need to carry large artwork in it. At the back of the lift, there is a giant window and you can see houses, roads and people. There are really good views of Eastbourne from the Towner when you get onto the top floor. - Marli

Studio 1 is an amazing place full of art of every kind. It has amazing sights and it will blow your mind. You can see cool artefacts and lots of modern arts. Warning this may become boring! But it’s full of surprises and wonder.
The Towner gallery is such a wonderful place with lots of lovely things like artefacts, sometimes made out of wood blocks or stone. The last time I came here there was lots of different stuff but the next time I came it had changed, so it changes after one or two months. One of the things that replaced the old things was an ancient table from 1983.
There are also other exhibitions on different floors.
On the third floor where the 3rd Gallery is, there’s also a café with a good view. There’s a huge projector in one of the rooms - it was awesome. - Luiza

Pokemon I recommend you go to Kids Stuff Toys shop to buy your Pokémon cards because it is the best shop for these. Pokémon is cool and fun. Chimchar is red like fire and I like Wingull. He is basically a seagull but in Pokémon.
To go to Cineworld, you must go into the Beacon Centre then go up the stairs until you see a sign saying ‘Cineworld’. Finally, you will have to go up more stairs. When you go in, it is really fancy! The roof is black, red and blue. When you exit you go the same way you entered from.

The Towner cinema was built in 2018. There are lots of comfy seats to sit on in the cinema. There’s also a café where they sell chocolate cake and ice cream. They are so sweet!
It’s interesting.

There are two cinemas in Eastbourne, and you can go to them to watch new films. One of the cinemas is in the Beacon Centre. When you go in the cinema, it’s all quiet around you. People eat popcorn and drinks. People settle down when the film begins. - Bourne writer

The Sovereign Centre ROYAL PARADE, EASTBOURNE BN22 7LQ
At the Sovereign Centre, there are swimming pools with changing rooms. You can learn to swim at the Gala pool there. There is a special shallow pool where you can train. The pool is a rectangle shape. It is next to the deep lanes where you can jump off a block. - Cosmin
The Sovereign Centre does not look promising from the outside, but it is very nice and fun inside. I give it 5 stars because it has a swimming centre, a café, a gym, a wave pool and even a bouncy castle! - Filip
- Daniel M
The Sovereign Centre is a place you shouldn’t judge from the outside; instead, you should judge it from the inside, as it’s really fun when you get in. Inside, the minute you see a pool it smells soooo good, and at the deep end of the pool there is a really big, blue slide and it is really, really, really long and it goes really, really fast. - Olivia
The humungous Sovereign Centre provides lots of food options like lovely chips, soft and crunchy burgers, different flavoured crisps, dairy-free biscuits and gingerbread cookies or chocolate. When you go to the Sovereign Centre and you want to store your stuff they have lockers at the top floor. - James

I think football is the best game. But if you don’t know football, that is still cool.

Hampden Park is the best park in Eastbourne because you can get the best ice cream cone there. There’s a pond that has ducks quacking loudly and once I went there and the pigeons came close to me! I feel happy because I’m at a park and the ducks keep splashing me. When I’m in the park café, I can smell coffee and tea and I can hear dogs running wild around the field outside, and the children in the park. - Scarlet

WILLOWFIELD STUDIOS, 67A WILLOWFIELD RD, EASTBOURNE BN22 8AP
I think Eastbourne is a good place to play football. One of the best places to play football is on the open green areas that you can see if you are on the beach. Eastbourne is also a super, good place to swim because it can be good weather sometimes on the beach.
Pevensey Beach is very near Eastbourne, and I like it as the tide goes out a lot! You can make the most wonderful sand castles with a moat around it there, and if you get the black sand, you can make it really solid. Top tip: if you get the black sand and put it around the moat and let it dry, you can put water under it and it won’t leak out of your castle! - Charlie
