2022 CAMP EDITION

DAY CAMPS + SLEEPOVER CAMPS

CAMP GUIDES BY CITY + SPECIALTY

SPORTS, STEM + ACTIVITY CAMPS

COUNTDOWN TO SUMMER Editor's Note Summer break is always exciting for kids, but it can also be a little stressful for parents. After school care can be challenging, but summer care for kids of different ages and interests can be especially overwhelming. That's why we put together this new CAMP Magazine! Find camp listings by city or grouped together by specialty, see what ages they are open to and HOW MUCH THEY COST! And since camp scheduling can be pretty daunting, balancing weekly camps, costs and outside activities (like family vacations), we've even included printable planning sheets to help you stay organized. HAPPY PLANNING! KERRY DOMAN & CARRIE BUDZINSKI

4 tips for finding the best camp for your Child Selecting summer camps for your kids can be stressful (and expensive), but here are strategies from local mom, Shantalea Johns, that can help make it easier. Summer camps offer incredible avenues for learning new skills, meeting new friends, and preventing children from having to say “I'm bored” during the school-free months. For parents, choosing the best camp means starting early and asking the right questions. Here are the top questions to ask yourself and others.

DECIDE THE DESIRED EXPERIENCE Do you want to learn new skills, develop more self-confidence, increase athletic ability or provide adventurous age-appropriate activities? Be sure to include your child when finalizing the selection. Some children, just as adults, like to be made aware or involved in the decisions that affect them.

ASK OTHER PARENTS FOR ADVICE Talk with other parents and read reviews about the actual physical environment and daily operations of the camp (noise level, size of group activities, type of food served, hours available, diversity of staff, etc.).

DETERMINE A BUDGET AND STICK TO IT Decide early on how much you will set aside for this expense. Be creative if needed to ensure your child gets the best summer camp experience. Explore the option of splitting the summer between an expensive camp and one not as pricey. By dividing our summers into two or more activities, your kids are exposed to more than one camp and you have the chance to balance the cost.

PLAN EARLY Many camps require health appraisal forms or deposits to secure a spot. They also often offer discounts for early enrollment. Plan early to ensure that you have taken the necessary steps needed to reserve your child’s spot in a camp.

SPECIALTY CAMP GUIDE Whether your kids are into robotics or soccer, theatre or art, here are the top specialty camps for every interest and age. One of the best things about summer camps is the opportunity for your littles to explore a wide variety of interests and specialties. This summer, let them code websites, feed farm animals, create art masterpieces, play sports, perform on stage...or all of the above!

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SLEEP AWAY CAMP Sleepaway camp is a huge opportunity for kids to gain confidence and self-sufficiency and adapt to new surroundings. A time to let their personality shine. At camp, kids interact with peers and authority figures without mom and dad stepping in with reminders to be polite, a good sport, or otherwise 'helpful' advice. While away, they'll have highs, lows and everything in between on what will be a impactful and memorable experience.

Get organized early

Prepare Your Child

Read the parent handbook, and print out the packing list, the “optional” packing list and take all of the suggestions as gospel. Then multiply the number of shirts, shorts, and socks recommended by about 12 and pack that number of each. LABEL EVERYTHING!

Let them know all of the fun things they can expect during their time away and ease into these not-so-fun topics to do your best to come up with coping strategies they can use during hard moments.

Prepare Yourself For Drop-Off + Get Out Fast Your child is going to be experiencing a sensory overload of new surroundings, new people, and new activities on opening day. In my experience, it works well to just stay out of the way and let camp take over.

Relish The Time Apart + The Reunion A change in routine is always a refreshing way to reflect on the things we appreciate in daily life. Being away from our kids allow for time to reflect on the things we love most about them and gives us a break so we can jump right back into parenting feeling rejuvenated.
