S.M.L. | The “Pop-Up Retail Roadshow” As retailers and developers rethink strategies to attract shoppers to their stores during times of uncertainty, paradigm shifts in the delivery of design solutions to address short-term and long-term market demands as physical and virtual environments brings the importance of adaptability and flexibility of spatial types and engagement opportunities to the center stage. Can design solutions bridge the gap between normative approaches to retail environments and future trends?
Implementation of S.M.L. (The Configurator in Action)
Can the shift from speed-to-market mass consumption to a speed-to-market personalized consumption, in combination with mass customization integration, transform the shopping experience as something both temporary and permanent at the same time? And can the amplification of a company’s brand and its connection to personal preference be experienced as an evolving affirmation of lifestyle within the shopping experience?
The following highlights the conceptual strategies for S.M.L. using the 20 ft. and 40 ft. shipping containers or prefabricated modules as the primary element that are scalable, adaptable, flexible and transportable. Check out the video!

Shipping containers are the primary elements that drive the idea behind S.M.L. When used in combination with other modular elements, whether prefabricated or unitized kit-of-parts, shipping containers provide both temporary and permanent space needs in a timely manner. In addition to being easy to transport, they are easy to organize, comply, combine, and modify to fit within most conditions and jurisdictions, with the ideal location being the retail parking lot for visibility and accessibility.
Small interventions can be used within existing public retail plazas and strip malls. Medium interventions can be used at existing lifestyle centers and central business districts where surrounding retail is integrated into an urban fabric and could use a boost. Large interventions can be used at suburban shopping malls, where expansive parking lots create ideal conditions for immersive, pop-up retail experiences.
