Season Scents for the

Just as the leaves on the trees have changed colors, it is time to make a change in the types of fragrances you are wearing. Autumn is a great time to experiment with new scents that are rich, warm, and seductive. Many of this year’s fall scents for women are comprised of essential oils that are generally found in cologne. Here is breakdown of what to look for while shopping for fragrances: Woodsy notes such as amber, vanilla, patchouli, spices, musk, sandalwood, and vetiver. White flowers like jasmine, tuberose, and lily. Citrus signatures that lightly adorn the fragrance. “Dead Sexy” Parfum by Tokyo Milk Parfumarie Curiosite The bottle of this unconventional perfume boasts an image of skull and crossbones on the inside and the label looks as though it was fashioned by a typewriter. Music & Fashion an open-eyed look into just how much those tunes we jam influence our wardrobes

Everyone has a favorite musician. Whether it’s a classical rock band such as Queen or Bon Jovi, or a more recent artist like T.I. or Katy Perry, one’s musical preferences undoubtedly carries over into their fashion choices. Walking throughout Athens, it’s easy to see the diversity in how students are dressed from day to day. Leslie Buchanan, like many students, has a style manifesto relating music and style, “I really enjoy music that is a little offbeat – just like my clothes. I want something that is easy and wearable yet unique and a little funky.” While music may not be the main fashion influence for most students, there are some who take the majority of their style points from their current favorite artist. “I’d like to say I am most influenced by Rihanna or Gwen Stefani, but my style is probably closer to that of Britney Spears because her style is easier to emulate and she’s constantly in the news,” said senior Kristen Rochelle. “The majority of the music I listen to is by male artists. I was just watching the Killers on SNL and I wanted to steal the lead singers outfit: a black suit with feather shoulders and a sheer button down shirt. I wanted to see what else was in his closet,” said Leslie Buchanan when asked which artist’s closet she would most want to go through. Just like fashion designers, musicians are creative forces that are constantly in the limelight and visible to fashion-conscious observers.

Another reason for the relationship between fashion and music is the emotional connection people have to each. While a song may bring back certain memories for someone, so too may a certain outfit. Ask your parents what they wore when they were younger, and more than likely they will reminisce about their clothes from various decades – such as your dad’s leisure suit from the 1970s. “I think I’m most influenced by the current country and pop music of the time,” says senior Jenna Harrison. “While I’d like to raid Taylor Swift’s closet, I’d have to say my style is closer to Carrie Underwood. As a huge fan of music in general, it’s hard not to be influenced by something I enjoy so much.” In a celebrity-obsessed world, it’s not hard to see the connection between fashionable musicians and the way their fans dress. In a city with some 30,000 college students who are interested in more than their studies and football, we’re constantly surrounded by outfits influenced by a wide range of artists. From country to punk, each genre of music has a corresponding fashion style, which may be picked up by many across campus. --Jessica Schwartz

brings to Flirt Fashions, a new boutique located in downtown Athens, Ga. “I love fashion and I love to shop,” Becker said in regards to why she opened the boutique. “Athens is such a great market for women’s clothing and this spot just happened to be available!” The newly painted bright pink walls of Flirt Fashions, formerly Opulence Boutique, give the store a fun and inviting atmosphere. Becker said the new store will cater to young college girls as well, as women up to 30. “Opulence was more high-end boutique,” Becker

and are adding a lot of new lines to the store.” For example, dresses will range from $50 to $250 and jeans will range from $100 to $200. In addition to introducing new lines, Flirt will continue to carry a few favorites that Opulence had become known for, such as Mollie B., Kensie, and Mink Pink. Becker is also planning on expanding Flirt’s merchandise to include a wide array of accessories, such as more jewelry, clutches, wallets, bags, and belts. -Rebecca Sellers

Nourish, a boutique located in Normaltown, offers a unique mix of eco-friendly clothes. When asked about why she opened her boutique, owner Lynn Louise Larson said, “I wanted to open my boutique in Normaltown because I love it and it is improving everyday. Also, the starting clientele interested in my products are here.” The thing that makes Larson’s products so unique isthat 98 percent of everything in the store is green. “Everything is created by emerging designers across the nation that I work with directly,” Larson said. “I’m a designer myself, so I am so excited to share the designers I have met with Athens,” Larson added. Larson designs her own handbags, which are sold in her boutique. She tries to use as many organic and recycled fabrics as she can for her handbags, which range from $110 to $150. “What is great about the items in my store is that many are one of a kind, so you won’t find 16 other girls wearing it,” said Larson. -Rebecca Sellers

Republic focuses on color, cut and style, hence the serious coloring bar. Here, Carrier explains, the client is able to watch the mixing of colors to come up with the individual hue they choose. Meanwhile, the client never has to move, with mobile roller balls to set your color, while sipping that glass of wine overlooking the town.Carrier describes the salon as “high end, but still catering to students.”

Meanwhile the stylists represent their modish style, wearing clothes resembling the atmosphere of what one of the Owners, Alissa Carrier, says is a “sort of New York loft feeling with a little bit of funk.” This salon is different. They have taken advantage of the building that was constructed in 1885 as an opera house, nearly 124 years ago.

Bellotte’s favorite style is a choppy, symmetrical but uneven cut. She says she likes mixing styles while keeping it feminine with respect to the facial shape and structure. While projecting vintage fashion films on the wall, being surrounded by fashion and beautiful architecture, the salon’s chic ambience is beaming. With prices starting at $40 for a haircut, this salon offers an affordable, but enlightening experience of Athens’ edgy, fashion forward culture. Republic Salon can be found at 312 E. Recently opening its doors to

the public of Athens, Georgia is a small boutique on Clayton Street entitled Menagerie. Run by long time friends Maryanne Fletcher and Tonya Gergely, the store specializes in new, vintage, and consignment designer clothing pieces ranging in price from an $8 slip to a $700 fur jacket. Fletcher and Gergely buy some of their merchandise in New York and LA. Fletcher is a former stylist and model, whereas Gergely specializes in costume design and alterations. Together they’ve created a beautiful

shop containing everything you could imagine: shoes, lingerie, menswear, scarves, jewelry, purses, and odd knickknacks. Not to mention the walls are lined with women’s clothing. Menagerie’s inspiration is to provide Athens with a source to shop for high end designer pieces, both new and vintage, that are unique and different. The duo thought this concept was missing from the Athens shopping scene. Menagerie fills the void perfectly, providing a middle ground between the trendy boutiques and the typical vintage stores in Athens. -Lauren Hook

ever ever has Athens, Georgia received a better Valentine’s Day present than it did this year. Opened February 14, 2008, a boutique like no other crept quietly into Hodgson Terrace at Five Points and quickly stole bajillions of our hearts. Drawing its name inspiration from the world’s vivacious butter-haired bombshells, blonde. is a new kind of boutique, offering an atmosphere as perfectly coiffed and svelte as it’s namesake. Oh, and its owner, Brandy Chandler, founder and owner of blonde., might possibly be the most adorable and congenial blueeyed blonde business owner in the 706. The store’s philosophy has four “links:” edge, exposure, style, and service, and they’re not playing around. The edge is the art of dressing; an art that so many of us have been perfecting since 3rd grade. Exposure refers to something Athens has needed for a while—easy, continuous access to brand new lines and designers so that we never find ourselves downtown in (gasp!!) last spring’s metallic minidresses. Ick. Style is the obvious one, and lastly, there’s service. Say you’re frazzled, at the absolute polar end of your ropes trying to find an outfit for your ex-boyfriend’s roommate’s who-happens-to-beyour-friend-too’s graduation party. 2. If you’re afraid to wear something as flamboyant as a

ruffled blouse or skirt, try a ruffled accessory! A ruffled shoulder bag for the boring office suit or a ruffled heel with a classic pair of slacks may be just what you need.

3. Contrast is the key. Your hair should be sleek and modern

and your make-up very natural or very bold. The ruffle should always be a surprise.

4. Remember that ruffles, especially horizontal ones, add

volume so beware of placement. In other words, if you think you have large hips do not wear a ruffled skirt!

5. Ruffles look chic when the overall line is lean and long. Beware of too many ruffles in general and baby-doll styles. (These are not okay after the age of 16!)

Reinvent Your Wardrobe For many students, the start of fall means one thing – a new wardrobe! But for students with limited budgets, a new wardrobe is not only impractical, but usually impossible. As the economy wanes and allowances among students dip, students may be forced to be creative this season. Thus begins Little Red Book’s quest for closet reinvention – without spending a dime. Most of us are familiar with the dreaded “closet full of nothing to wear” syndrome. But take heart, with a few simple steps – you could find yourself on the road to recovery. Kendra Ponte, a sophomore from Monroe, recently developed a case of the syndrome, lamenting, “I’m tired of [my wardrobe]. It’s boring. I want to go shopping!” But with a few changes and some mixing-and-matching, Kendra discovered outfits she never knew she had.

What does it take to reinvent your wardrobe? Four simple steps:

. A closet with the essentials (i.e. jeans, simple tops, jackets, and a few dressy

pieces). . A style-savvy friend to help you out. Usually it takes another eye to rediscover the forgotten items in your closet and figure out how to wear them again. . An intended fashion “look”. For example, Kendra wanted to emphasize classic pieces with unique details this fall. . Leave your money at home. They don’t call it DIY for nothing!

Using these four steps, Kendra was able to create three “new” outfits for fall in less than an hour. First, we created an everyday look for her to wear to class or on the weekends. This outfit consisted of skinny jeans, a dressy black tank, floral cardigan, Mary Jane flats, turquoise bangles and colorful scarf. The resulting look was laid back, practical, and perfect for everyday. Secondly, we created a look for work. Kendra is a sales associate at the bridal boutique “I Do. I Do.” and must look professional and polished on the job. So, we paired gray dress pants with the same black tank, a black blazer, layered black necklaces, and mauve pumps for a little punch of color. Finally we created a dinner out or date outfit using a brown patterned dress, brown jacket, turquoise and gold bangles, and bronze heels. Kendra had only worn the dress once before and was excited to have a new way to wear it for fall. Little Red Book

Either you feel like you’ve already worn everything a million times before or every item in your closet seems completely and utterly inadequate in comparison to the standards set by the trendy females of Athens. Well, fear no more! We’ve come up with a guide to the 10 essential outfits every UGA girl must own in order to look her best no matter where she’s going. Class? Downtown? A football Game? Going out to eat ne of the great things about Athens is all of the unique Mom & Pop restaurants found Downtown. laid, the uniform of lumberjacks. Wayfarers, the iconic item of the eighties that was a perfect match to your day-glo “Frankie Says” t-shirts. What do these seemingly unrelated items have in common? The captivation of every American youth in society! These two trends have come together in harmony this season. UGA is no longer Bulldog country; it has been taken over and held hostage by these fashion trends. Look around campus and you will be confronted with flashes of plaid in a multitude of colors and textures, ranging from cotton blends to flannel. You may be temporarily blinded by the neon glow of brightly colored wafers that every student has chosen to don that day in order to add extra flair to their wear. You cannot escape it, plaid and wayfarers have infiltrated our society and it seems they mean to stay and I can’t blame them! Little Red Book

Plaid was once the material of choice for the grunge scene in the nineties, when everyone wanted to be associated with the angst and struggle that flannel expressed, represented most truly by its leader Kurt Cobain. No longer is such a print restricted to lumberjacks, Paul Bunyan, or the new grunge rockers of our generation, but it has proliferated to every style tribe. Plaid now has edge and is seen in numerous variations. From polished, cotton oxfords with thin lines and condensed prints, to purple flannel shirts with bold stripes nonchalantly screaming, “I have a causal, understated coolness and confidence about myself”. Not only popular among America’s youth, plaid was also the highlight of fall fashion. It sashayed in the shows of such designers as D2, Ralph Lauren, and Marc Jacobs, and was incorporated into every outfit of Dolce and Gabbana’s show. No longer merely a comfort item, plaid is a true fashion that has staying power. Plaid can be casually worn over skinny jeans, for both women and men, or formally, incorporated into dresses and blazers for the daring fashion proficienado, creating a hybrid Coco Cobain style. It has expanded its form to include tights, pants, and accessories. Plaid is no longer a one label print but spans labels of every demographic and style.

The wave of popularity of the wayfarers has risen slowly, starting back in the spring of 2007, and has reached its peak this summer/fall with every celebrity owning their own basic black pair, to the production of wayfarers in new fun and fanciful colors (twotoned, pastels, neons, even camouflage). America’s youth has been swept up in this trend, including the students of the University of Georgia and their administrative staff too! Wayfarers have come to such a saturation point in our culture that organizations such as the Career Center are using them as promotion to captive students’ attention. Every club and their brother was supplying them at the Activities Fair, while every kid on campus can be seen sporting a pair. The Ray-ban wayfarer also seems to have become an equalizer of economic status for students. Just as a designer bag can elevate a pair of Levi jeans and a Hanes v-neck shirt, Ray-ban wayfarers can elevate the level of style and status of a pair of running shorts or a plain tee. The wayfarers are the iconic symbol of the new “eighties-tastic” millennium. Now that your eyes have been opened, I am sure you will be playing “Where is Waldo” plaid/wayfarer edition on campus. These trends have made their mark and cannot be denied. So when you see that girl wearing her plaid

FASHION dos and don ts ’

There’s a thin line between dressing like you “just don’t care” and being a straight-up bum!

Okay, every female on the planet can understand that some days (no matter how few) you just do not care how you look. Especially here at UGA where three test in the same week is considered, well another week of school (seriously it’s getting kind of ridiculous)? However, it seems that this “I-don’t- care-anymore” attitude has become less of a once a month bum day and more a branch on Athens’ fashion tree. This branch has the possibility to assemble some interesting outfits, as long as you stay on the right side of the line! Here are some tips to make that “just-hopped-out-of-bed” look a little more Gossip Girl and a little less Oliver Twist.

STYLE 1: The Athlete- Okay, let’s just be honest for a second. If you go to the University of Georgia, or live in

the Athens area, or even in the surrounding Athens area (which is still Athens, seeing as how we are stuck in the middle of nowhere), you have seen the following outfit on many a girl: Nike athletic shorts (or some variation), a tshirt (from screen, to basic, to too large, to wrinkled, and back to neon yellow), and tennis shoes (hopefully paired with socks). Now, most would define this as gym attire, but for many students at UGA this is what you wear Monday through Friday. So let us look at the dos and don’ts on how to make this “I-just-came-from-the-gym-anddidn’t-care-to-change” look into an “oooh-look-at-me-I-can-look-stylish-in-Nike” look.

DO wear a cute, PLAIN, sporty top that does not look like you had a catastrophic fight with the iron … and lost. Shirts with V-necks are always cute and give the outfit a little more oomph. (Dynamite, in Downtown Athens, has some great American Apparel v-neck shirts and hoodies for $16!) DO spice you outfit up with accessories that scream, “if I had wanted to dress up, I could have.” Oversized, leather bags are always a great fashion statement (huge, animal print bags are a must-have in Athens right now). A simple pair of pearl earrings (real or not) and some oversized sunglasses also add a classic, feminine touch. DO wear a dull-colored, but prominent lip gloss. A touch of sexy, with a tomboyish outfit. (MAC has the best lip gloss known to man!) DO mix your bottoms up sometimes. There is more to sportswear than Nike. (For the Georgia fan, Victoria Secrets at Georgia Square Mall has a line of UGA apparel, including very cute sweat pants!)

DON’T wear too-large tshirts that you received free, from one of the millions of programs here at UGA.

DON’T wear athletic shorts that make you walk like a penguin. It is always hard to find a perfect fit, but try to get some that compliment your features and do not make you look like you either have a major wedgy or a gallon of water in your bottoms! DON’T wear any other sock, other than footies or ankle socks (it does not help anything). DON’T have on clashing colors. You might be going for nonchalant, but this does not mean you do not have to match. At least have one color you can find throughout your whole outfit.

DO buy long leggings. Instead of the shin-high leggings, invest in a pair of leggings that go all the way down to your ankles. The best part about this updated trend is you can get them in almost any color, making it easier to match! DO wear a cardigan. North Face fleeces will always be worn (seriously, we were wearing them in high school), but if you ever thought of wearing another cozy overcoat this would be the year to do it. Long cardigans are everywhere now. They come in all kinds of colors and if you are really feeling daring, open front cardigans are amazing! (For a more fashion forward look, keep the cardigan open a bit, and belt it.) DO invest in a good pair of boots. Last year everyone owned at least one pair of Uggs, so they will probably be worn this year too. Luckily, boots are definitely in and if you want to broaden your horizons, buy at least one pair of boots with “flair”. Be it the moccasin-inspired boots, to the flat, strappy boots, to the ‘o, so’ fabulous ankle boots.

DON’T over expose your rear end. Refrain from wearing your shirt too short with the leggings. It is very hard to make your backside look good in leggings, so just cover it up. DON’T wear Uggs with everything. This was said before, but MATCHING IS IMPORTANT! Ugg boots do not match with everything!

DON’T buy sheer leggings. Attending class in see-through or too tight leggings is unacceptable. To test the see-throughness of your leggings ask someone if they can see the color and/or shape of your underwear beneath them. If yes, take them off and start again, save them for the weekend (if you so choose). wear any other sock, other than footies or ankle socks (it does not help anything).

DO get a scarf. This is just an added accessory, but a scarf would go great with this updated outfit… get one, get five! Beenies are incredible with this look too!

Are You Being A

re eco-friendly clothes just a fad, or is the fashion industry really making an effort to save our planet? Ecofriendly style is definitely in highdemand for clothing and accessories, but the term is vague and can be misused often by the style and earth conscious alike. Although there are plenty of companies that keep mother earth in mind, there is also a problem of “green washing” where marketers mislead consumers on the earth friendly aspects of their products. The term ecofriendly has no exact definition or regulations, therefore it’s important for consumers to understand what fabrics provide peace with earth instead of only giving peace of mind. The organic movement sprung its roots in the 1970’s with the hippie culture and a newfound awareness of the effects of harmful chemicals on the environment. Organic cul-

ture got its first taste of the spot light as consumers began to demand food that was free of pesticides and antibiotics. Fast-forward to almost forty years later, and you now you see the same word slapped onto the packaging of anything from makeup to dishwasher soap. The demand for earth friendly attire started more recently and has since turned into a marketing bonanza. It’s important to know what products are truly environmentally friendly and which are only hazy shades of green. In fact, it has been shown that many products labeled as “eco-friendly bamboo” are actually made from the more harmful rayon fiber, according to Professor Ian Hardin from UGA’s department of textiles. Because of the growing problem of “green washing”, each earth conscious consumer must remain informed and skeptical when choosing a green wardrobe. For starters, all fabric


and clothing that is manufactured has some sort of harmful effect on the environment,so the term eco-friendly is only relative to the amount of negative effect it has on the planet.Cotton that is grown free of pesticides and genetic alterations is one type of green textile that is more helpful to the environment. Another group of earth friendly fibers are those manufactured from recycled materials, such as recycled bottles. Fabrics made from renewable resources such as corn and vegetable products are another eco-chic alternative on the market. Other fabrics such as hemp, ramie, and flax, are slowly making their way from the soil to the shelves. It is important to keep a few things in mind when shopping for eco-friendly products. First, you have to wonder if you are trying to help the environment or ease your own conscience. Second, you can ask yourself if what you are buying has a real impact

on the environment or if you are just feeding the marketing frenzy. Is the product made from a renewable resource, a recycled product, or is made by a non-harmful chemical process? If you are making the effort to go green in your clothing, you should be making the same effort in all areas of your life. Although it’s important to stay informed about eco-friendly clothing, there are many ways that we can show off our green thumbs without digging too deep. -Sara Idacavage

GOSSIP GIRL

T

ype in “Gossip Girl Fashion” into your Google search engine. Currently, there are 3,190,000 possible websites that have to do with these three words, and counting. Slowly, along with the newly overexploited Disney tween stars, Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers, the CW television show Gossip Girl that pulled about 2.61 million viewers each episode of its first season is taking over the youth of America, not to mention our tabloid and fashion magazines. I promise you, practically every decent magazine out there has at least a little section blocked out to praise the fabulous clothes and accessories of this television show; not to mention a “how-to” section to mock your closet after that of S, B, or Little J. And with good reason, of course. Have you ever actually watched the spellbinding show? It’s about the social lives of Manhattan’s teenage elite. Schoolwork or any type of academia absolutely never play into the script. The characters spend their time socializing in high end bars and restaurants throughout the upper-east side, shopping in all of the designer boutiques, or planning some sort of social revenge on their teenage counterparts. Oh, and have I mentioned the cast wardrobe for this show? The budget must be outrageous. Every single piece is surely high end designer. The clothes are almost as integral as the characters themselves. Each character has specific pieces that complement that particular character’s style. So, even though both Blair and Serena seem to pretty much dress the same, that is completely not the case. Each girl has a totally different closet. Serena’s style is more earthy and bohemian mix than Blair’s, which is more sophisticated. However, both Little Red Book

girls updated with a seriously modern punch this second season. Sure, tartan plain mini skirts and adorable loose ties are the basics of every girl’s outfit during school hours of the show, but it’s amazing what the main stylist, Eric Daman does to make each outfit individual and complete the character even more. Serena likes to wear ankle boots, loose cardigans, and accessorizes with studded leather boho bags in neutral colors and long, dainty, yet youthful necklaces. Her style was actually somewhat modeled after that of Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. Most pieces from her closet are from hipper names like 3.1 Philip Lim, and of course, a little Chanel as well. Blair likes to add sophistication with modern structured jackets, colorful tights, adorable flats, scarves and her signature: headbands. Most of her pieces are Ralph Lauren, Marni, Chloe, or Chanel, as she aspires to look like (and have the life of) Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Bottom line: every character is dressed to kill and America is noticing. I have seen more pieces in stores recently that remind me of a punched up school girl uniform than ever before. Recently, I’ve subconsciously found myself buying and wearing clothes that are reminiscent of this new, hit show. Of course, I cannot simply go to one of the numerous websites that spells out each article of clothing each character wore from the show and click “buy now;” but what would that make me even if I financially could and would?
