REFLECTION:
WHAT PRACTICES CAN YOU SEE IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT?
ARE THEY RIGID OR FLEXIBLE?
DO THEY SUPPORT OR HINDER LEARNING FOR CHILDREN?
ARE ACTIVITIES TEACHER-DIRECTED OR CHILD LEAD AND CHILD-FOCUSED
There are many different reasons why educators may create more of a structured creative environment, some of which may include:
·Not open to new ways
·Misunderstand role of intentional teaching
·Not current in new theories and research in how children learn and what strategies and environment will support and enhance learning
·Believe that children learn best through being told what to do
·They believe it is better way for children to learn to follow directions
·They don’t feel comfortable with change

Once you display these in your settings, it can be very difficult to tell the difference between the children’s artworks As an example, if children were presented with an image of a flower or a real flower as reference and provided the opportunity to paint or draw from this image, this process would allow for individuality and expression of creativity This is known as ‘provocation’, when setting our environment to support learning outcomes
Children need to be enjoying the process of creative learning, as opposed to focusing on the outcome and product. If a child becomes too concerned about creating the perfect design, such as drawing within the lines, completing the colouring printed image, it can impact on their self-esteem, confidence and put them in competition with their peers
This may lead the child to lose all the positivity of creative play and may opt out in the future, due to lack of self-belief. This can place impact through their childhood and even into their adult life.
We must be cautious not to take away the opportunity for individuality and as Early Childhood Educators and Teachers, we have a vital role in supporting children to flourish within our settings and help them understand that their individuality is special and something to be proud of
REFLECTION: HOW ARE YOUR SUPPORTING CHILDREN TO FLOURISH?
• HAVE YOU CURRENTLY GOT STENCILS DISPLAYED WITHIN YOUR ENVIRONMENT?
• WHAT MIGHT THIS LOOK LIKE AND FEEL TO A CHILD OR THEIR FAMILIES?
• WHAT MIGHT YOU DO, TO SUPPORT CREATIVITY AND INDIVIDUALITY?
Organized by Helene & IsabelIDEAS FOR YOUR CAMPUS CELEBRATION:
PUT ON A PERFORMANCE WITH CHILDREN TAKING A SPECIAL PART- THIS MIGHT BE A ROUTINE SONG THAT YOUR STUDIO DOES, WHICH IS FAMILIAR TO THE CHILDREN
SET UP A SPECIAL PROJECT DISPLAY - INVITE FAMILIES IN TO VIEW THEIR CHILD'S SPECIAL CRAFT ITEM, THIS MAY BE DIFFERENT FOR EACH CHILD. THIS CAN THEN BE GIFTED TO THEIR CHILD. THIS ALSO COULD BE THE CHILD'S PROCESS ART -FRAMED
