TAMAR DRESDNER ART PROJECTS
Litvak Contemporary and Tamar Dresdner Art Projects are pleased to present in this catalog, works by Israeli artist Elad Kopler which will be on view at Volta NY 2016. About the Artist Born in 1974 in Ramat Gan, Israel, Elad Kopler received his B.Ed. from Hamidrasha School of Art, Biet Berl in 2004 and graduated with honors from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design MFA program, in Jerusalem, in 2006. Kopler’s paintings feature urban landscapes that appear to have been severely damaged or partially destroyed. The desolate, vertical and horizontal outlines of buildings assimilated into vestiges of nature, point to traces of a lost culture. Various architectural forms - such as a geodesic dome reminiscent of an ecological structure, or a series of concrete pools - inhabit the same rocky, empty landscape; the mountaintop on the horizon is marked by the memory of a structure - a temple or an observatory. These compositions, which cannot be encompassed at a single glance, allude to the history of landscape painting. Yet whereas in Romantic painting the sublime is associated with a sense of awe, in these images its presence provokes instead a sense of anxiety. The fictional expanse created by Kopler appears to include the figure of a gatherer, who has taken upon himself to preserve the vestiges of a lost culture. These paintings allude to the possibility that following its destruction, the remnants of our culture will become exotic archeological artifacts to be studied by future unknown cultures. Kopler was the recipient of many awards and recognitions, amongst them: The Young Artist Award, Ministry of Science Culture & Sport; Rappaport Prize for Young Israeli Painter; Award for Excellence, Bezalel Academy of Art Design; America-Israel Cultural Foundation Award. His work has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions including the Tel Aviv Museum, of Art (solo exhibition); Haifa Museum of Art, Haifa; Petach Tikva Museum of Art; Litvak Contemporary, Tel Aviv; Tavi Dresdner Gallery, Tel Aviv; Habres & Partner, Vienna; and Biet Berl Academic College Gallery, Tel Aviv. Kopler’s works are kept in collections worldwide including the Bank Ha’poalim Collection (Israel); Philip Hofer Collection, NY (USA); Sam & Yael Bacharach, NY (USA); and numerous private collections.
