Week 3 Learning Loop Foundations are the lowest load-bearing part of a building.

Footings are the foundations of a wall.

Settlement: buildings sink into the earth, compress the earth Cracking of a building >> differential settlement

Shallow footings and deep foundations Shallow: stable soil conditions Deep: unstable soil conditions 3 types of shallow footings

Structural elements

Studio Report Lot 6 Cafe

Few columns and beams are noticed in this building. They are made from concrete. The column acts as a strut.

Underground carpark & South Lawn

The column is made of concrete, as the usage of steel and timber is not appropriate. It is because inside the column, there are pipes for the purpose of drainage.

Arts West Student Centre

This building consists of a few truss rods. The frame with the shape of triangle is supported with those rods. 

Beaurepaire Centre Pool

The steel frame structure is supporting this building. This building is also surrounded by glass wall.

Oval Pavilion

The ceiling of this building is made of timber. This is unusual. It is because timber is usually used to make floor.

Old Geology South Lecture Theatre Entry Structure

The structure of this building consists of columns and arches. They are made of stones. There is extra part of the column outward to support the building.
