hybridity hybridity The idea of hybridity originated in 19th century science, it was soon applied to the humanities in the frame of postmodern theory and proved very rich both in its ideological and aesthetic derivations. Then, hybridity becomes a key concept within postmodernism as a political statement that comes to problematize boundaries. The concept is subversive against the background of an alleged essential purity These are the traits that identify postmodern art. Postmodern novels are hybrid in their mixture of heterogeneous elements of content and form. Hybridity can also be a concept of architecture. It implies “flexibility, openness, adaptation, ambiguity, contradiction and irony

01. Architecture x Personality [Double House] GSD Career Discovery/2015.06 Individual Work Tutor: Zach Seibold Location: Cambridge, Ma, USA Program: House, 156 ㎥
The site is very narrow for two clients, one is a monk and the other is a break dancer. The two of them have very contradictory personality, which lead to the different requirements for space and architecture forms in one site. Thus I want my design can do something that distinguishing as well as integrating their features. The design started with a series of abstractive spatial studies thereby to trigger the design essence.

BREAK DANCER
Behaviors indicate their emotional concern and spiritual world. Their house should have interaction with their personality. Architecture should be a tool to show their personality. Use the simple boxes as typology; assemble them in different ways, to generate different space through geometry operations. Strange body movement gives the break dancer an unique perspective of the world. It is in a crazy, twisted, unstable state. That's what the dancer longing for. Their living space should be same as their spiritual world. Through analyzing their movement, I translate their dance language to the architecture language and try to create the disorder, skew, emotional space for the dancer.

Program Boxes' arrangement [OVERLAP]
Monks concentrate on the spiritual world. They seem seldom move a lot. They spend whole day in losing themselves in the spiritual world they create. Their living space is narrow. However, in their mind, the space can extend far away. Everything is quite, slow and expansive. Just like the Chinese painting. It is subjectively expressing people’s inner reaction towards the whole society. Conventionally, China’s painting is directly connecting with calligraphy. The painting is the outside expression of the poem content and the image of calligraphy, and it is also the exterior show of people’s inner world. The poem is painting and painting is poem as well. Additionally, many people’s personal ambition or lifelong aim cannot be realized by the earthly work, and then the paint their ideal world into their painting.

Design Strategy
synthesis the two space
The design starts from some boxes with different size. The target architectural space should be built based on combination of the boxes, reply to words like SKEW, ADJOIN, WRAP, INTERLOCK, OVERLAP, and analysis of client’s personality. Overlap of the two is not only 2D coincide, it focuses on the stereo interaction. In the function part, the skew space can be the vertical connection (stairs) for the overlap space, and the skew space can be the ground of the overlap space.

02. Architecture x History [Artist Community] Academic /2015.5 Individual Work Tutor: Zhou Bo Location:Dalian, Liaoning, China Program: urban renewal, 2340 ㎥
Old city quarter cannot run away from demolition, Dongguan Street is a place like this. With the rapid urban development, former commercial residential centre fell into crumbling slums. However, the old buildings contain rich humanistic emotions, an integral of the city culture. Simple demolition will make the precious culture disappear, thus bringing new energy to the block becomes a major problem. As the only element that full of life, trees are chosen to be the origin of the renovation project.
Background
Concept
the old block witnesses the history of city
In 1897ďźŒcolonists from Russia divided the Guandong Block to the Chinese residents. In the year of 1905, when Japanese colonists arrived, the Guandong Street had developed into a commercial block with some scale. The prosperity lasted in early 1990s, whereas the block is among the shabby areas. The more than 100 years’ history witnesses the development and evolvement of the Dalian City, and is the last living gathering place for the older generations in Dalian.

03.Architecture x Culture [Film Archive] GSD Career Discovery/2015.06 Individual Work Tutor: Zach Seibold Location: Union Square, Somerville, Ma, USA Program: Film Archive&Theater, 3530 ㎥
The site locates in a district with busy traffic and next to the union square. As the main activity area for residents living around, the design should offer a comprehensive activity area, which combines functions of Film Archive and indoor and outdoor theaters. According to Aldo Rossi, architecture must not be understood as in the city, but rather OF the city and the complexity of the site. Thus the architecture is put in a broader background for consideration. It is made as the symbol of the city, for attracting more people, creating positive public areas and improving surrounded environments.

Plan
Section Original shape, each tube is one function
Union square is a key urban node, locating in the link section of Boston and Cambridge, where gathers many restaurants, post office, police office and Saturday temporary market. Due to lack of public space and green coveting, few people participate in outdoor activities, the traffic congests and the air quality is bad.Railway and viaduct are in distance and the land nearby is in waste.
The function determine the length of the bars

The building can roughly divided by two part, The first part is the slope which is more outward. Most outdoor activities happen on the slope. The slope is good carrier for the outdoor theater. The higher level defines a more safety space and people won't be bothered by the traffic. The second part are several bars. Bars have different function, are separated but connected in some part. The model show the different part of the building. The main programs are archive, library, theater and assistance room.

Linear space--story line
Act One
I got inspiration from the film. The film is combined by so many scene, the director design the scenes to tell the story and emotion. The audience follow the story line to view the world in the movie. So I want to translate this experience to the building. When people walk in the building, they feel like they were watching movie. The space, which is like the film, is long and changeable. And the montage, which is very useful skills in the movie will also, been used in the building. Each bar indicates one story, in some part of the audience can change the path to another ending of the story.

According to the analysis of the site, some important points are been made. Lines are been connected between the building and these points. In the building, people's sights are been guide to certain direction of the city, which make the building has interaction with the city. Outside the building, people can look the building in the perfect orientation. And the building is a landmark of the city. The lines also divide the slope, which makes the public space more diversity.

04. Architecture x Urban [Skyscraper] Academic/2014.11 Individual Work Tutor: Jingming Qu Location:Dalian, Liaoning Province, China Program: Urban Complex, 38200 ㎥
Driven by the increasing of land values, the density of central city becomes higher and higher. The complex programs are compacted in the skyscraper in vertical direction. The movement of people depends on the elevator. There is no place for people to stop, to relax and slow their pace. The skyscraper is a highly preserving environment. In urban design, it is normal method that add lowdensity block in the city to improve the quality of city. To the vertical city—skyscraper, we can transform this method---add low density unit in the building.
Research vertical city development Vertical development and densification consist of the irresistible trend of new city districts’ development. For quite a long time, some non-architectural and low-density area shows up as urban green area and platform for public activities. With stimulus of interests, the central area will continuously shrink, or even disappear in the near future. Even protection actions cannot be helpful with the current layout, which cannot suit for users’ demands for public area. Under the vertical development background, people’s vertical activities will definitely compass horizontal activities. Thus I hope to transfer the layout method in traditional urban open space, vertically integrate it into the city and undertake the functions of public areas and green land.

transform Now--Future The city road is getting busy. The blocks are filled up. When people walking in the city, no place for them to stop. So is the vertical direction. The high speed elevator make the people in the building have no chance to stop.

05. Architecture x Activities [Extended Stadium] Academic work/2015.03-04 Individual Work Tutor: Xiaodong,Lu Location:Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, CHINA Program: Stadium, 15673 ㎥
Stadium, regarded as the landmark of a city, often means huge scale and outstanding form, but as is often the case, little attention is paid to the leer space outside. Also, many are designed only for mega events, which leads to very low frequency in every day use. Thus, this time, I try to merge this mega structure into landscape, and by emphasizing on the diversity of activities it offers, each part of this stadium can play a more vivid role in people's daily life.
Analysis of variety sports space Doing sports has become a necessary part for many people, while different sports require different spaces. Through analysis of various spatial demands, a flexible and changeable spatial form is created to avoid former waste in space and resources.

06. Art Work [Drawing&Photograph]
Hand drawing, photography are the means by which I allow things external to architecture to inform my design process. In travel, they have allowed me to discover fascinations. The photography is perceived in a radically different way than the measured line drawing. A charcoal drawing is perceived in a radically different way than the measured line drawing. A charcoal drawing is perceived differently than either of these.
