The mechanical and the sensuality Brewery and bath design, Granada, Spain, 2012-2013
My site is located in a historical area of Granada, called AlbayzĂn, which is facing Moorish Palac Alhambra, and have access to a local river Darro. AlbayzĂn retains the narrow winding streets of its Medieval Morrish past. My project is built on top of an empty ruin. I challenge to design a project in a historical site with combining fuction of brewery and Hammam (turkish bath). Setting back from the crowded neighbourhood and having a higher view towards the gorgeous Alhambra are my two main strategies.
The mechanical: Water
By researching on Islamic culture, I've found that water is an essential element, especially in architecture, garden, in people's ritual life and religious life. The water stored in a technical space, heated by a boiler, conveyed through niches and basins, and comes into experienced space: Hammam. Together with decoration, skylight and naked bodies, Hammam colors with sensuality. Most hammams in Granada were fed directly from the public aqueducts or cisterns using a system of water distribution. The floor is heated by hot smoke from the furnace. Hot smoke passed under the hot room and the winter undressing room before rising up through a chimney in the wall.
Sensuality: Hammam
It is described as a place where the Sultan rested after the bath. He would lay on the cushions and carpets in the bedrooms that surrounded the central space, while he admired his wives that danced naked, with the rhythm of musicians seated in the upper gallery, who would not able to look at what happened below. When the Sultan chose one of his wives to have a night of passion, he threw an apple at her, and it was received proudly by the lady. Hammams, as the sensors of nature, deliver to the body. My project reagards as a medium between physical experience and mechanical design.
Mechanical study: heating and balancing
Inspired by the a balance siphon coffee maker, I study the transition area of a brewery working space. A balance siphon has the two chambers arranged side by side on a balancelike device, with a counterweight attached to the heated chamber. Once the vapor has forced the hot water out, the counterweight activates a springloaded snuffer which smothers the flame and allows the initial chamber to cool down thus lowering pressure (creating a vacuum) and causing the brewed coffee to seep in. Likewise, the darwings(on the right)show the process when liquid transfer s from a boiling kettle to a lauterning tank with the same principle.
Context study: Sweet nuns There are two convents next to my site. And the nuns earn their living by selling sweets and confections. After ringing a bell, you talk through a window/door contraption with a wheel in the middle that had dividers to prevent any possibility of seeing the other side. They put the sweets on the wheel and we put the money, and the wheel was spun to exchange.
Transition space study - nuns and public
Context study: Public and Private The teahouse and apartment building are occupied by three groups of people: customers, owners and tenants Through a small private door to a courtyard, the owner family lives above the tearoom. In sunny days, they spend morning time on the terrace facing the garden below and then take charge the tearoom in the afternoon. The melodic sound from the fountain by the entrance is an invitation to customers enjoying a cup of tea . Students has an individual entrance to the other courtyard with typical Arabic layout. The staircase c o n n e c t s g a l l e r y a n d t e r r a c e s w i t h t h e i r o wn apartments.

Project Through function collage, the temperature connection between brewing and bathing has been transformed into a section with a centre pool. The bodies are surrouned by brewing tanks. The copper boiler soaks inside the pool along with the bodies, maintaining a certain temperature. A steam room lying on top of the kettle, captures hot air and aroma from below.

Highrise Building Competition Nanjing, China, 2008
The site is located in the old city centre of Nanjing, with a high density and low story buildings. My proposal is to slim the high-rise building volume into a thin layer going around the site, leaving a centre square to public. I spread out public functions through out the "mountain", and connect them into a continuous green pedestrian in the air, where people can enjoy a dynamic panorama view toward to the whole city.
Plan (1-3): shopping centre (4-33):office, gallery, cafe, park (41-50):observatory

The Rong's Family Factory Renovation Wuxi,China, 2009
The project locates in the river bank of Wuxi. It used to be a heavy-industry factory. Along with others, the abandoned building has turned into the landmark and memory in local. We propose to renovate the decayed envolope and bring a culture centre to the factory.

Structure The exsisting columns with corbels used to enlarge the burden. They are the traces from industry. We propose to keep them as the main "trunk" and to build a new floor and boxes upon them. Thus, there is a dialogue between old brick envelope and new concrete content.

Opera Parsifal Stage Design Poznan, Poland, 2013
PARSIFAL by Richard Wagner Concept and staging by Hotel Pro Forma Teatr Wielki w. Poznan Parsifal is the last opera by Richard Wagner, premiered at Bayreuth Festspielhaus 1882. Parsifal was originally conceived as a festival play for the consecration of the Stage. With Parsifal, Wagner tried to raise and share his beliefs in a foundation of humanity: the idea of compassion among human beings counter pointing egoistic values. Wagner positioned himself very much against the secularised and materialistic orientation of his era, strictly based on progress, science and capital; principles that he considered inhuman. Parsifal can be conceived as a Wagner manifesto, a proclamation for compassion, and should be treated as such.
CONCEPT The opera Parsifal has a long tradition of many interpretations. Using a postdramatic theatre dramaturgy the artistic team of Hotel Pro Forma elaborates on the heavily- loaded symbollic contents to create a new visual and conceptual version of the opera. The post-dramatic theatre is based on a non-hierarchy between theatrical resources, namely text, music, light and space. This non-hierarchy makes the development of a visual dramaturgy possible, which can function independently of the one already proposed in the written text/libretto. This kind of dramaturgy derives from an associative logic and allows heterogeneous spaces and temporalities to meet and interact.
