CIVIC ASSEMBLIES

Umich, 1th semester/individual proj. /16 weeks subject city hall research field space effect building type low-rising administration/civic/tourism function 276 Pine St, Jersey City, NJ, USA site location 67750sft floor area

I noticed that neither the children nor the tourists were involved in using the city hall. So I pay attention to the participation of these two groups of people. In community scale, I design a pedestrian system to link the residential area and tourism area with the city hall, and to create a safe and convenient street for children activity and accessbility to Liberty State Park. For the building scale, I focus on the connection of outdoors activity and indoors events, and the relationship between the working space (the core space in my proposal) with those for children and tourists. The city hall will serve its purposes for the entire city if it manages to deal with the interaction among different groups of people and circulation of functions. What's more, homelike working environment for staff and clear circulation for citizens can improve the quality and efficiency of civic services.

The roof meets the different requirements of the council chamber and the atrium. For atrium, the space needs direct light to be brighter; the chamber needs more subtle light. So I design the unit of the roof with two tetrahedrons and these two geometries create an opening. The atrium roof opening faces south while the chamber roof opening faces north, so that I keep the roof same pattern and create different environment. And these geometries can serve as the ceilings as well.

MARKET FROM THE PAST

SJTU, 6th semester/group proj. ( with Wang Jichen )/4weeks subject competition | building evoking people's past memory research field history building type temporary market/retail/recreation function No.50 East Kangding Road, Butterfly Bay (Jin'an District), Shanghai site location 800m2 floor area

Even if landscape of Soochow Creek has been improved in recent years, the vitality on the band is never literally recovered without citizens participating. Meanwhile, the markets in Shanghai should have been the space where quotidian life shows, but the current prevalent standard markets no longer play such roles. Thus urban vitality is jeopardized by pursuing "efficiency". So we try to learn from history of old Shanghai to rethink and redesign the traditional market, which is the bond linking the city and citizens. Then we bring this new urban space characterized by market to Soochow Creek to initiate energy of the river again. This market space grows from local history but serves contemporary residents. It is the mild method we want to enlight this river and this city without any incongruity involving and disturbing. We choose the proper site for this experiment according to the result of field researching. Then deconstruct and extract elements in old Shanghai to recombine our market from the past.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE SITE farm and river in Shanghai

First, we take into consider possibility of shipping in Soochow Creek (horizontal river) and Huangpu River (vertical river), and position of the farmland (red area). So we choose the site within the central Shanghai, inner ring (white area) and create a bond with the creek. Second, we research the landscape by Soochow Creek, the distribution of the markets and residential areas. Proximity of landscape to the creek can be classified into three types, great, medium and bad. Each of them contains two standard sections. Great proximity to the creek is conducive to the connection between the market and the creek. Then the new market should be built in the place not covered by current markets yet but surrounded by plenties of residents, which means the site needs a market. Finally we decide to choose Butterfly Bay as our site (red circle).

It is convenient for bikers to have fast food!

Nice environment for residents shopping in this market! These's a flower house and a tea house. I'm going to have a rest!

We love this tea house covered by a flower house! This corridor along Soochow Creek is friendly to us! We love to watch the show or opera here! A great lifestyle! Fresh and cheap vegetables and fruit!

~~~~
This special Moon Gate is classical! We start our shopping from here!
Market sprawls from land to water. So that I can always see many interesting scenes during shopping.
Wonderful view on this tower!
~~~~ Chess room!

I play chess with my friend here everyday! And we can even see the opera. What a cozy late life!

So close to creek here that I can even touch the water. The dock is in front of my eye and I am going to take a boat.

~~~~
From hill to hill no bird in flight From path to path no man in sight A lonely fisherman afloat. Is fishing snow in lonely boat.
Just finish shopping in the market above the water.
I am really enjoying sitting in Soochow Creek and watching the opera.
VERTICLE INCUBATORS
SJTU, 7th semester/group proj. ( with Zheng Siyu )/8weeks subject high-rising commercial complex research field industry building type high-rising commercial/exhibition/office/hotel function 548lane, East Siwenli, Xinzha Road ( Jin'an District ), Shanghai site location 91200m2 floor area
At the beginning of 21th century, Shanghai government planned to rebuilding old factories for creative industry, the strategy learning the Left Bank in Paris by the Seine. However, the Soochow Creek seems not to become a center of creative industry and the latter has not matured as anticipated. The Creative Industry Development Policy fails to a large extent, though the governement and mass media won't admit. What kinds of factors hinders creative industry? Is Soochow Creek unsuited to creative industry? And Is there any method of stimulating creative industry indirectly? I try to answer these questions by the research aiming at this field. The crux of the situation is that current yards are all isolated and the artists can't afford the cost working by the river, where the real estate forces up the price. After that I find the way in high-rising building, which is the perfect incubator to cultivate creative industry individual offices. They are capable of being the knot to connect the current yards as well.
WATERFRONT IN FUTURE
HOW TO ACCOMPLISH IT
Current creative industry parks need some "nodes" to connect with each other to be a more coherent system by the river. Nodes are made up of containers (small boxes) which are same modules. Because such boxes can be flexible and save space to increase density and decrease the rent.
1
Shape the buildin according to sunlight an the relationship with th city. The facade of th building is effective fo advertising and exhibitio of creative industries du to the height and area which can attract peop on the ground. So it possible to use the facad to accommodate the sma boxes (incubators).
6
The truck take them t Soochow Creek. Som of incubators are place by the river in grou to be a new creativ industr y node. Thes nodes can connect th creative industry park along the river and attra tourists and residents vicinity. Besides they a responsible for revitalizin Soochow Creek.
CREATIVE INDUSTRY ALONG SOOCHOW CREEK
These five creative industry yards are the major creative yards along Soochow Creek. I compare these yards in industrial variety, public space, accessbility, rent and occupancy rate. The statistical data show that current situation of creative industry along Soochow Creek is not good as expected. What's more, waterfront of Soochow Creek cannot connect these yards due to lack of transportation and "knot", which means these yards cannot form an efficiency system together. So I try to deal with these problems with incubators growing on the skyscraper, which can both help improving creative industry and connecting the yards standing by Soochow Creek.
3 Divide the facade into three part. Exhibition for boutiques is at bottom due to its openness. Then the developed creative companies are in the middle because they are attractive enough to be adjacent to the boutiques. And the developing creative labs need a high location for advertising themselves. When some incubators matured or have ability to leave, they are unloaded to make space for new members. The boxes are sold permanently to the holders till now, not just rented temporarily. They will continue to develop in a new site.
4
Connect three parts with an entire circulation corresponding to their forms. The exhibition for boutiques needs a wide space for plenty of customers. The developed compnaies require a continuous and big space so their space is strip. The developing offices have to share public space to hold exhibition so they assemble as a group. A crane at the top can load and unload the incubators to make them more flexible. It is convenient for new individual office to come in, which keeps updating the whole system. The updating process performs directly on the facade, which represents the development of the creative industry.
OPENING COMMUNITY
SJTU, 8th semester/individual proj./8weeks subject residential community planning research field history of Soochow Creek housing building type dwelling/creative industry/market function 1312 lane, Wanhangdu Road (Changning District), Shanghai site location 67520m2 floor area
In 2016, the State Council announced new policy of openning up the gated community, the common form of community in China evolving from ancient dwelling yards. It initiated an intense debate among citizens. On the one hand, Chinese residents get used to living in a walled yards to keep a quiet and safe lifestyle; on the other hand, gated community occupies a huge block in city which makes it a tumor rooting in urban roads and street. Considering the negative influence on both vehicles and pedetrians, the State Council decided to ban gated community. The policy seems to beset in a dilemma because it didn't take residents' habit and tradition into consideration. Some communities directly open their yard door to complish this task, which plunged them into chaos! Under such circumstance, I wondered that how to open up the gated community mildly without disturbing people living there. So I analyze all general types of community in the history of Shanghai and integrate the advantages of them to get a new form adapting to requiremnets of both citizens (safety, convenience...) and the city (accessibility...).
Lifang medium desity high safety rare buffers less activity low openness
Shanty Town much activity many buffers medium openness low safety high desity
Shikumen high safety some buffers low openess less activity high desity
Work-unit high safety some buffers much activity low density low openess
Gated community high safety some buffers low openess high density less activity
Urbanized community some buffers medium openness much activity lower safety high density New community in this project has both public plaza and private yards without gates to make the transition from public to private space, from city to home. So the community is openned up. At the same time, suites in the community are on 2nd floor and above while 1st floor belongs to business regarding its openness. Corridor system on 2nd floor connects all residents and ensures their safety.
The corridor with platforms on 2nd floor connects all the buildings and ensure the safety of residents above.
The publicity is gradually reduced from the city (plaza) to the rooms.
