COMMENTS WE HEARD FROM CYCLISTS “I am a mother of 3 and always feel I am taking my life into my hands. I ride assuming everyone is on their cell phones and oblivious at best to road sharing with bikers. I am a die hard bike commuter so I ride anyway, but I really only feel safe on a bike path in the greenway.” “I have seen tremendous growth in the number of bikes in my 25 years commuting to LMA. I have not seen concomitant improvements in bike infrastructure.”
COMMENTS WE HEARD FROM CYCLISTS “I love biking and bike to work when the days are light long enough. I bike 10 miles (round trip) out of my way to come along the river bike path because all my friends and family are so afraid that I am going to get killed on the streets of Boston.
COMMENTS WE HEARD FROM MOTORISTS “I do not bike. As a driver of a car I am always worried about bikers and their safety. For their sake I wish the bike lane was more a bike path off-road” “I would consider biking, from my home to LMA I could do, within LMA is scary! I've had colleagues who have been hit by cars too many times to feel safe.” “I try to avoid it at all costs because of it feeling like a transportation black hole. I have never had an experience there that didn't stress me out.”
COMMENTS WE HEARD FROM EMT’S “[LMA is] a nightmare, trying to get around bringing patients to that area makes me consider going elsewhere” “If the patient didn't have a spinal cord injury before entering the Longwood area...they will once they get there. The roads are worse than terrible.” “I'm an EMT, but also a cyclist. I love cycling. Longwood is horrible for cycling. The bike lanes, if present, are congested and full of obstacles (parked cars, construction equipment, pot-hole craters).”
COMMENTS WE HEARD FROM BUS RIDERS “I've sometimes found that getting off the bus when it's stuck in traffic and walking gets me to my destination faster. Also, I have cancer, and some days walking to and from the bus is tough. (I don't have to walk all that far, but I imagine others with health problems who are further from the bus must have a hard time with the walk.) Coming from work, I sometimes use UberPool because the bus does not come often enough and I would need to miss more work in order to get to appointments on time.
