In His Presence
It’s a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord.
There is a slight crispness in the air these days and I see mums starting to bloom on front porches. Homecoming Kings and Queens are being crowned and pumpkins are appearing at the entrances of the grocery stores. Autumn is here and it’s the time of year that the gateway to the holidays opens as we begin to focus towards thanksgiving. We all have things to be thankful for. Even in the midst of economic downturns and political chaos we can still find much to be grateful about. The question comes to us often in this season. Teachers will be pinning colorful lists on bulletin boards revealing the answers to “What are you thankful for?” Family and friends usually top the chart as to what we feel most grateful for. But I’d like for you to consider this… Being grateful and giving thanks are not the same thing. Gratitude is something we feel. Thanksgiving is something we do. It is important for the gratitude in our hearts to be transformed into words that are verbalized and heard. Remember, by presidential proclamation the day is set aside not for “gratefulfeeling” but for “thanks-giving”. For any sort of thanksgiving to happen there are at least two requirements: something to be thankful for and someone to be thankful to. Gratitude blossoms into thanksgiving only as it gets expressed. Who should you be thankful to? Parents? Teachers? The list is endless. But first and foremost it’s time we should vocalize our gratitude to God. The Bible says, “It’s a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord.” It is a wonderful thing when our gratitude finds a voice and is directed heavenward to the source of all blessing. A great example of this is found in 2 Corinthians when we see the Apostle Paul exploding in gratitude for the grace that comes in the gospel of Jesus. “Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift!” It would be a “good thing” for all of us to take a few moments to call to mind all the things we are grateful for. It would be a “better thing” for us to make the call or say the prayer and vocalize thanksgiving to whom it’s due. While the turkey typically receives all the attention at holiday gatherings, rounding out your meal with the perfect snacks, sides and desserts is the key to a successful feast. Start your guests off with NYC-Style Pita Chips with Herbed Ricotta and Arugula to keep big appetites at bay then serve Slow Cooker Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows alongside the main course as the ideal complement to any meat. Finally, top off an evening of delicious food with Caramel Macchiato Ice Cream Pie to send everybody home happy. One Terrific Turkey Centering your holiday meal around a turkey cooked to golden perfection is the ideal way to serve a feast. Without the right preparation and execution, however, your bird could fall short. To ensure your holiday dinner centerpiece lives up to expectations, follow these simple tips, from purchase to plate: 1. Buy the right bird. Finding a turkey that’s just the right size for your expected party is the start to a successful gathering. One common rule of thumb is to buy 1 pound of turkey per person – so for a 10-person meal, purchase a 10-pound turkey. Don’t forget that nearly everyone loves leftovers, so you may consider buying a few pounds more than necessary.

2. Be patient. If you opt for a frozen turkey, don’t rush the thawing process. For larger turkeys, it can take days to defrost properly. 3. Timing is everything. Finding the right amount of time for your turkey to spend in the oven is crucial but not always the easiest thing to do. For an 8-12-pound bird, aim for 2.5-3.5 hours; 12-16 pounds for 3.5-4 hours; 16-20 pounds for 4-4.5 hours, and so on. The key is bringing the turkey to a temperature reading of 170 F. 4. Let it rest. Instead of pulling the turkey out of the oven and immediately carving it, give it a chance to rest for 20-30 minutes, which allows the juices to soak into the meat and moisten it up. Take It Slow This holiday season, use your slow cooker to save time and oven space without sacrificing flavor. Try this recipe for Slow Cooker Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows and find more seasonal recipes at McCormick.com.

After vision screening 314 students in the 5th and 7th grades at the Aubrey Middle School last month, the above team finished their Aubrey ISD effort by vision screening 296 Preschoolers, Kindergartners, 1st, and 3rd graders this month. With a team effort, these 610 vision screenings took about five days but would have taken the school nurses substantially longer due to their other nursing duties. The Aubrey 380 Area Lions Club truly appreciates the trust they have built with the Aubrey school district plus it has freed up the schools’ nursing staff to focus on their student’s daily health issues. The Aubrey 380 Area Lions Club also wants to thank everyone who visited their booth at the Aubrey Peanut Festival and later at the Pilot Point Bonnie and Clyde Festival. Thank you for your interest in our Aubrey 380 Area Lions Club and your participation in the raffles as all of the money raised will stay in this community to help our fellow citizens. And a special congratulation goes out to Tony Ochoa and Melanie Smithart who won the raffles for the lottery tree baskets and to Karen Blandino who won the raffle for the 40” smart TV. Keeping Kids Active in Cooler Temperatures
A
s the weather gets colder, it can be harder to motivate kids to step away from their computers and devices and get off the couch. However, it’s essential for kids to participate in active play all year round. According to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity helps build and maintain healthy bones and muscles, promotes psychological well-being and reduces feelings of depression and anxiety.
Plan a nature walk to find inspiration and materials for art. Even though it’s chilly outside, your family can still get out and enjoy the outdoors. Bundle up and take a nature hike with your kids around the neighborhood or at a local, national or state park. Encourage your kids to collect items like pinecones, acorns and leaves as you go and to be on the lookout for wildlife to observe. After the hike, take out art and craft supplies and help them create projects with the items they found.
Sadly, physical activity is becoming less of a priority in kids’ daily routines. A recent survey conducted by Let’s Play, an initiative from Dr Pepper Snapple Group to make active play a daily priority, found that 64 percent of parents said busy schedules stand in the way of more active play for their children, up from 56 percent in 2015.
Plan an indoor scavenger hunt. When a really cold day comes along, send your kids on a fun and active scavenger hunt around the house, searching for items that you can hide in advance. Work together as a family to locate the items or create some friendly family competition to see who can find all the items first. Having the family move around the house with a mission prevents the temptation of staying on the couch in front of the television all day.
Each season brings its own opportunities for play, and fall is no exception. Families can beat the cold weather blues and stay active together by trying some of the following activities:

Frontier Cooking Mesquite Wood Grill Finest Ingredients That’s What We Are All About
Breakfast Lunch Dinner Join a class or indoor sports team. Whether you are playing a favorite sport or learning a new one, it is always more fun with other people. Longer stretches of active play are often more likely to occur with friends or siblings. Sign your children up for an indoor sport or class they have never tried before, such as gymnastics, rock climbing, swimming or dance. This allows your children to learn something new, meet kids their age and be active for an extended period of time. Volunteer. While giving back is always in season, this time of year is a perfect opportunity to teach kids about giving back to those in need and being grateful for what they have. Sign the whole family up to volunteer at a local soup kitchen, participate in a toy drive for a children’s hospital or help out at an animal rescue shelter. Your children will not only be active, but will also grow emotionally, socially and intellectually as a result. Home & Garden
The onset and arrival of colder temperatures means that it’s time once again to brace yourself – and your home – for everything that winter weather threatens to throw at you. From cool, drafty air wafting into your house to friends and family bringing snow and sand inside with them, it’s important to remember the preparation to go through before winter strikes. In order to help keep your home warm, cozy and clean throughout the winter months, follow these seven tips to get started:
Check the Roof With warm days dwindling, it’s never too early to look over your roof for damaged shingles or other various problems. Because winter brings along cold weather and plenty of precipitation, cracks in the roof can cause major issues down the road. If heights and ladders aren’t your thing, try using binoculars from ground level to check things out.
Clean the Gutters After the trees shake loose of their leaves throughout the fall, it’s always imperative to keep the gutters clean of debris. If your gutters fill up with leaves and other junk, the runoff from rain and snow has nowhere to go except in unwanted crevices in your roof. Seal Leaks Around Windows and Doors Caulk is a cheap, simple solution to one of winter’s most annoying little habits – sending cold drafts into your house. Look closely as you check around windows and doors for small cracks then carefully seal up the problem.
Install Door Sweeps Another way to keep warm air in and cool air out is to use door sweeps on the bottom of all exterior doors. A door sweep is a simple device that can be attached to the door frame to help seal the space between the bottom of the door and the floor.

Reverse Ceiling Fans While some ceiling fans require flipping blades, most new fans simply have a reverse feature to make the blades spin clockwise. This easy fix can help pull room air upward and cause warm air – which has risen to the ceiling – to be forced back downward.
Keep Out Sand and Snow Rather than sweeping and vacuuming your entryway every evening, place rugs and storage bins close to your front door, garage and any other entrance to the home so that you and your guests don’t track sand and snow into the house when inclement weather hits.
Stock Up on Winter Gear Unfortunately, it’s impossible to know exactly what each winter will bring. Rather than trying to fight the elements on a snowy day to find salt for your sidewalk or a new shovel to clear the driveway, stock up on these items and other winter essentials long before Mother Nature strikes.
Winter can be a pain, especially for homeowners, but staying on top of your preparation and being ready for cold weather’s reach can help make snow season easier to handle. For more tips to get your home ready for winter, visit elivingtoday.com.

Simple Steps to Maintain Natural Stone

Whether you desire a routine check-up and cleaning or a complete smile makeover, we are here to meet your needs!
Natural stone adds elegance and style to any home. With a nearly endless array of colors, textures and designs, it’s easy to create a one-of-a-kind look for your kitchen or bath. However, without proper care, that carefully selected natural stone may quickly start to show wear and tear. Not only does natural stone lend a beautifully sophisticated aesthetic, it’s generally regarded as a practical choice because it’s more durable than many other materials. However, granite, marble, travertine and other natural-stone and quartz surfaces do require proper care and attention to maintain that luxurious finish. Keep your natural stone in top condition with these tips from the experts at Granite Gold. Clean often. Even if your surface appears clean, the safest bet is to clean it after every meal preparation. The most miniscule particle could have a detrimental effect on your natural stone. Avoid common cleaners and abrasives. They can break down the protective seal and you could be faced with costly repair or replacement. Also, give special attention to the scrubbing pad you use; many are too abrasive for expensive stone counters and leave unsightly scratches. Seal frequently. Frequently sealing granite countertops and all other natural stone surfaces maintains maximum surface protection, penetrating stone surfaces to provide superior, long-lasting resistance to staining, etching and soil buildup. If you’re not sure whether it’s time to reseal, it’s easy to test. Pour water (about 3 inches in diameter) on the surface and let it sit for 30 minutes. Be sure to do this in several locations, since the integrity of the seal could vary from one area to another. If the water beads, then the stone remains sealed. However, if the stone is penetrated – signified by a dark mark or ring created by the water – it is time to reseal.

Polish regularly. Polishing stone provides two great benefits. First, polishing after cleaning will bring out the stone’s natural beauty. Second, it will reinforce the protective seal and provide ongoing protection against water spots and fingerprints. One time-saving but effective solution after sealing is Granite Gold Clean & Shine, which provides the cleaning power of the line’s Daily Cleaner and the luster from the Polish in one easy-to-use formula.
