My last contribution to the magazine listed our UIL Elementary Award winners. Since the January edition, our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students competed in the UIL Middle School competition held on the NCTC Gainesville campus last month. The district tied for 3rd place and our Middle School One Act Play also placed third. We are very proud of these students and their accomplishments. Below, I have listed the results from the 2015-2016 UIL Middle School Competition.

Honorable Mention Cast – David Baker All Star Cast – Elizabeth Lykins & McKenzie Neely As we enter into the shortest month on our calendar, it is important to note that 2016 will bring an extra day to our February calendar, also know as Leap Day/Year. It is said that Julius Caesar gave the extra day to the month of February, but we also know that by adding an extra day every four years keeps our calendar
consistent with the earth’s rotation around the sun. The next Leap Day will be on February 29th 2020. An extra day added to the month, will help spread out the numerous holidays and activities that occur during this busy time of year. During the month of February, for those that believe that a groundhog can predict the seasons, we hope that Punxsutawney Phil will come out of his burrow and not see his shadow. No shadow will mean an end to winter and will forecast an early spring. For those living in the northern part of the United States, I can only imagine that an early spring will be celebrated due to those areas being hit hard with blizzard like conditions. The month of February also signals hearts, flowers and candy as Valentine’s Day draws near. Please make sure that you check our website to follow the guidelines for treats brought to our campuses. With the increasing number of students with food related allergies, we especially want all to be able to participate in activities related to the holiday without fear of having a reaction. The third Monday of the month is reserved for President’s Day. The day is considered a Federal holiday honoring our first president George Washington, but most states honor all of the great men that have held the office of President of the United States. This year, Celina Independent School District will not be in session on Monday, February 15th, for it is considered a holiday for students and faculty. Historically, the month of February is filled with a wide variety of activities and events for our parents and community to attend. Basketball and soccer will be winding down their seasons, just as baseball, golf, powerlifting, softball and track kick theirs off. Our band and choir students will be competing in UIL Solo and Ensemble and CHS Cheerleaders, Brigade, and Drill Team contestants will perfect their routines for tryouts held later this month. Parent Information nights will be held at Celina High School during the month of February. These dates are posted on the February calendar located on the Celina ISD website. Whether the groundhog predicts six more weeks of winter or the coming of an early spring, make the most of every hour that you have with family and friends during this winter season. Before you know it, winter will be but a memory and discussions will center around spring break plans and the coming of summer.

Time for NINE!

Nine Texas High School State Football titles.... It was a record that the entire Celina community wanted to hold. It’s not enough to have the longest winning streak in the state of Texas at 68 games. It wasn’t enough to be undefeated going into the State Championship game. This is Celina, and the tradition of winning is a source of pride from the past. Grabbing that “Number 9” was the focus of the season…getting that record and being the TOP high school football program in the entire state. In some programs, it’s an accomplishment to just make the playoffs. And advancing through three rounds in the postseason is a blessing. But this is Celina. And it had been seven long years since their last state title – a drought by their standards. They expect the kids and coaches to do well every year…it’s a lot of pressure, but this program wouldn’t want it any other way. The expectations were high for the matchup between an undefeated Celina Bobcat (15-0) team and West Orange-Stark Mustangs (14-1). And unfortunately, on their first possession of the game, the Bobcats lost their quarterback. Conner Pingleton left the game with a broken arm after taking a hit from the Mustang’s defense. His ability to throw when necessary helped to balance their offense and allowed their running game to thrive. With him out of the game, it was clear that the Celina offense was limited. And, while the outcome wasn’t as planned, the Bobcats have nothing to hang their heads about. The 2016 season will be here before we know it, and Celina’s passion for victory will be even stronger. Watch out…our Bobcats are HUNGRY!!

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education. FCCLA has 200,000 members and more than 5,500 chapters from 49 state associations, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The organization has involved more than ten million youth since its founding in 1945. On January 12th, 2016, Mayor Sean Terry signed a proclamation proclaiming the week beginning February 7th as National FCCLA WEEK in Celina. By doing so, the mayor urges all citizens to acquaint themselves with the activities and values of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. Citizens can show interest in FCCLA by providing help and encouragement to the young men and women who are working to achieve knowledge and experience that will help prepare them for future responsibilities as active, concerned members of society. What is FCCLA? FCCLA is a non-profit, nationwide Career and Technical Student Organization with its center of focus being the family. The organization is intended for the youth of men and women associated in Family and Consumer Sciences education from private and public schools up to grade 12. Since 1945, FCCLA associates and participants have been completely building a significant difference within their households, professions and local communities. Focused on the multiple roles of family members, wage earners and community leaders, members develop skills for life through: character development, imaginative and rational thinking, social relations, hands-on education and career preparation. Members participation in the FCCLA provides leadership potential opportunities and skill development essential for daily living including goal setting, identifying problems and providing resolutions, making decisions, as well as social correspondence. These skills are vital in both home and work environments. The organization came up with chapter projects which give attention to many different issues affecting youth. These projects deal with a vast range of issues including teenage pregnancies, parenting, drugs, peer stress, environmental atmosphere, diet, nutrition, physical fitness, teenage violence, along with career and work pursuit. The Ultimate Leadership Experience is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers and communities. FCCLA plays an important role in the curriculum of Family and Consumer Sciences education being the career and technical student association it is. FCCLA provides great opportunities for active student participation at local, state and national levels. For more information on the Celina High School Chapter of FCCLA, please contact Officers Maddie Brown, Maria Quiroz or sponsor Mrs. Melessa Barbknecht at Celina High School 469-742-9102, or follow us on Twitter at Celina_Fccla, or on Facebook at FCCLA-Celina TX, or visit our website at http://celinafccla.weebly. com/

We all know of communities that are vibrant and seem to have an energy with a definite and unique personality. And we know of communities that appear to be lifeless and are places you simply pass through. City managers make a career of learning how successful communities work. And we learn that there are most often two primary components required to build a vibrant City. One is city and the other community. The “city” represents the tangible and measureable - the steel, asphalt and concrete. The “community” represents the intangible, the invisible that which is difficult, if not impossible, to measure – respect, trust and engagement. Both are important. Both must be given attention by citizens, elected officials and non-elected leaders. It seems we often pay far more attention to the “city” issues than to issues of “community”. It’s easier to tend to the seen than the unseen; it’s easier to measure progress in the “seen” than the unseen; it’s easier to make rules and ordinances related to the “city” than the “community”; and “city” issues may be less personally sensitive than “community” issues. In Celina we are focused on the health of “community” in our city. For the same reason that “spirit of community” is important to a city, it is also important to a business, church, school or any other structured community organization of a group of people. Our Celina leadership team is focused on finding better ways to identify and nurture the forces that can bring us together so that they will be stronger than the forces at work that would drive us apart. Any sense of community that we enjoy comes as a result of the spirit and generous nature of others who provide time, talent, ideas and affection for the work of building community. We can budget for great structures of steel and concrete, but no one can purchase community. It can only be realized as a result of people who care enough to give of themselves to that very special cause called community.
and a sense of place for our citizens. The library hosts Pre-School Storytime each Friday at 10:30am with stories, crafts and songs. Parks and recreation leagues offer team sports including soccer, softball and youth baseball. Senior Citizens have a weekly activities agenda. There are numerous City Boards and Commissions that are comprised of citizens appointed by Council to represent their neighbors in actions on behalf of the Council. Included are Parks Board, Economic Development Corp, Community Development Corp, Planning and Zoning Commission, Main Street Board, Keep Celina Beautiful Board, Library Board, Historic Preservation Commission, Building and Standards and Board of Adjustments. Some meet monthly and others, as needed. Some, such as Main Street and Keep Celina Beautiful have Committees, not appointed by Council, that plan and execute special projects and programs including Free Movie Nights on the Square, Farmers Markets (in partnership with Celina Ladies and Friends), holiday special events and community festivals, all executed with a cast of volunteers who are building Celina’s “community”. So please mark your calendars and plan to volunteer. CajunFest is coming up April 9, followed by Splash & Blast on June 25th with a new fall festival scheduled on October 15th and there is a place for you to volunteer. Community definitions sourced from the “Gift of Community” by Gary McCaleb, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Center for Building Community at Abilene Christian University and former Abilene Mayor.
Celina offers multiple avenues for citizens to engage in community building. The city hosts many events, large and small, to build community

In His Presence
The Fullest Extent of Love
By John Herring, Pastor at FBC Prosper
As the calendar moves into February, people all over the world turn their attention toward Valentine’s Day. The history of Valentine’s Day is an interesting study. Not much is known about St. Valentinus. An early tradition states he helped Christians escape from Roman prisons in the 3rd century, where they were often beaten and tortured for practicing their faith. He was eventually caught and imprisoned himself. While in prison, as the story goes, he fell in love with the warden’s daughter and wrote the first Valentine message to her, signing it “From your Valentine.” From the beginning of the tradition, Valentine’s Day has been about love. I’m reminded of another story about love. On the night before Jesus Christ died, the Bible says he did something remarkable. Here’s the story from John 13:1, 4-5. 1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love… 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. (NIV) What an amazing picture of love. It was the night before Jesus was going to die. Jesus and his friends were meeting to celebrate the annual Passover Meal. He wasn’t despondent or sad. Instead, he was filled with deep inner joy. He knew he was about to accomplish the greatest feat in human history – dying for the sins of the world and rising from the dead. So what does he do? He showed them “the fullest extent of his love” (v. 1). How did he do it? He washed their feet. Washing feet was a task for a servant. No servant was present that night at the meal, and none of the disciples volunteered for such a lowly task. But Jesus did. Even though he was their Rabbi, their Lord, and their leader, he took on that lowliest of tasks. By doing so, he showed them the “fullest extent of his love.” What an incredible picture of sacrificial love. Not only by washing their feet, but also by giving his life the next day on the cross. As we think about love this season, let’s remember Jesus’ example. In relationships, especially in families and in marriage, it is about daily sacrifice. It is about putting others first. Pride, selfishness, and laziness can all be barriers to putting others first. This Valentine’s Day, let’s express our love with cards, flowers, poems, gifts, and a special dinner out. But beyond the 14th, let’s commit to showing the “fullest extent of our love” daily by serving others like Jesus did.

This team is designed specifically for those special needs players that are unable to participate on regular teams due to their physical/ mental challenges. There are NO outs. Each child will be able to hit the ball, run the bases and make a home run. We divide the players into two groups and rotate infield and outfield. For those players that need buddies (to help them hit, run, catch or just stand close), volunteers will be available. We have a t-ball stand for those that need it or the coach can pitch the ball. We will accommodate any player to help them participate to the best of their ability. And for the parents, this will be a relaxing opportunity to meet other parents of local special needs children that face the same day to day challenges and exchange ideas. Parents will finally be able to sit on the sidelines and watch THEIR special needs child play ball. Please sign up no later than March 1st so we will be sure to have a team shirt, etc. for your child. WE ALSO NEED VOLUNTEERS. This is a great opportunity for students who need volunteer credit hours, groups, clubs, or just anyone that wants to help out. There is no required age limit, and we love our retired folks who help out too! Please contact Stephanie Kirby for more info, to sign up or to volunteer. 972-762-1347
