From the Desk of Mr. Rick DeMasters Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools Recently, while reflecting on the end of year activities, I came across a quote by Father James Keller who said, “A candle loses nothing by lighting another.” While I’m certain that Father Keller wasn’t referencing our school district or community, I would like to think that his powerful words are truly the reflection of the actions of numerous individuals, business owners, former graduates of Celina, and philanthropic organizations that year after year support our students through educational opportunities and scholarships. Numerous memorial scholarships were awarded to members of the CHS 2017 graduating class, not only recognizing the achievements of those that were selected, but to honor the legacy and memory of those that contributed to Celina’s rich history and tradition. Miles Miller, Camille Ownsby Erwin, Brenda Goodell, Jeanette Loftis, Cindy Morris, and the McCauley Families have continued to light multiple candles to further the hopes and dreams for our students. Organizations such as Fidelis Inter Se and the Masonic Lodge award scholarships to our students each year and also provide support for other endeavors that not only benefit our senior class but all students that call our campuses home. The El Puente de Celina Board awarded the largest number of scholarships in the history of their organization by honoring seven recipients this year. Proceeds from the Cinco de Mayo celebration held each year on the Celina square will continue the path for these seven recipients to higher educational pursuits.

The Celina Association of Renaissance Excellence, also known as the C.A.R.E. Foundation, has rewarded academic excellence and promoted student achievement throughout our district since 1992. C.A.R.E.’s yearly platform includes the awarding of scholarships to outstanding students. This year, Thirty-five scholarships were awarded totaling $35,000. Students were selected on the merit of their scholarship application, essay and references. District and community programs such as ATPE, Band, CATS, GCEC, FCCLA, and FFA, also award scholarships to many of our students, which will help to defray tuition expenses. Bobcat Moms, Pee Wee Football, and the Quarterback Club organizations have for many years awardedscholarships to students that have continued their athletic endeavors from their humble elementary agebeginnings to many years and practices later, competing at the varsity level for their individual sports. Those that were awarded scholarships know the importance of perseverance, determination, and have adeep understanding of the traditions and expectations that come with being a Celina Bobcat. Father Keller’s words ring true when I think of those that are the “candles” that continue to light the path for our students to follow in the pursuit of their dreams. We are truly blessed by the generosity of these individuals, business owners, former graduates and those whose legacy continues to live on through our students, for the scholarships you have bestowed upon them. You have given our students a reason to smile, a reason to hope, and in time, a reason to one day light their own candle to brighten the path for another.

Marching Ahead With New Director of Bands for Celina
By: Renee Marler
Celina band is looking forward to an exciting new year, reenergized by the hiring of director, Benjamin Aune. Aune will begin his 15th year in music education as the new Director of Bands at Celina High School. Aune will conduct the high school wind ensemble, team-teach the Bobcat Marching Band, assist with the middle school ensembles, and teach beginner brass classes. Aune has already met with the Celina Band Booster Club whom he quickly impressed with his experience, forward-thinking ideas and community focus. Aune was equally impressed with the welcome he received from not only the booster club, but the community as a whole. “I consider myself an advocate for my students and for music education and when I saw the community rallying behind me and these kids, I knew I was in the right place,” Aune said. Aune comes to Celina band at a time when membership is extremely low, but he doesn’t see that as an obstacle. “Band really sells itself,” Aune says. “You find that balance where you make it good and make it fun and the program will naturally grow.” Aune also met with Celina Athletic Director, Bill Elliott to discuss the natural partnership between band and football on Friday nights.
“As ambassadors of the school, we want to make sure we represent Celina in a positive manner and give the community something they are proud of,” -Benjamin Aune. 14
CelinaMagazine.com | June 2017
While Aune is optimistic, he understands that the change will not happen overnight. His goal is to keep improving and keep building year after year. One of the most noticeable improvements will be new customizable band uniforms. Another will be the addition of color guard. Aune approached the idea of adding a color guard to the band and just eight hours after putting the information out, 15 students signed up. “On Sept. 1, Friday nights will look different and feel different,” says Aune. “Our theme is ‘Level Orange’ and you will see a complete show design, lots of percussion and a unique feel.” Aune comes to Celina from neighboring Prosper ISD where he taught a number of different ensembles grades 6-12 as a brass specialist under the guidance of John Alstrin. During Aune’s time in Prosper, ensembles routinely were awarded “Superior” contest ratings, named “Most Outstanding” at festivals and contests, and increased in membership by nearly 50%. The Prosper High School Marching Band qualified for the 5A Region 24 Marching Band Finals for the first time in school history. A graduate of L.D. Bell High School, Aune received his B.A. in Music Education from Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. During his studies, he received multiple performance awards as well as the Jones Fine Arts award for outstanding musicianship. His principal instruments are the bass trombone and trombone. From 2012-2014 Aune was on the campus of Texas Christian University. As a Master conducting student of Mr. Bobby R. Francis, Aune assisted with all aspects of the TCU band program as a Graduate Associate to the University Bands. In addition to giving music education lectures to undergraduate students, Aune rehearsed and conducted the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and the Horned Frog Marching Band. Prior to his appointment at TCU, Aune studied under Christine Cumberledge as the Associate Band Director at Central Junior High School in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD. His duties included conducting and rehearsing a number of award winning ensembles including two Concert bands, the Jazz band, and instructing the beginning brass and percussion classes. During the 2009-2010 academic year, Aune was named the District Teacher of the Year for HEB ISD and was nominated as a finalist in Region XI for State Teacher of the Year. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, Aune held the same position at Vivian Field Middle School in Carrollton – Farmers Branch ISD before moving to HEB.

Beyond The Flame Put some sizzle into your Father’s Day grilling (Family Features) Just
ask any dad, he’s sure to agree: a perfectly seasoned steak flame-kissed to perfection is one of the great pleasures of summer grilling. This Father’s Day, you may be able to teach dad a few tricks of your own. Start by selecting a premium-quality steak like those from Omaha Steaks, which are aged at least 21 days to reach the peak of tenderness then flash frozen to stay that way. Then take that guaranteed quality to the grill and try a new method, such as slow, steady smoking, for an ultimate flavor experience. Find tips to make your summer grilling great at omahasteaks.com. Smoked King Cut T-Bone
1
Omaha Steaks King Cut T-Bone (48 ounces)
1
tablespoon Omaha Steaks Steak Seasoning
2
tablespoons kosher salt
Thaw steak in refrigerator 48-72 hours. Remove steak from vacuum packaging. Prepare dry brine by combining steak seasoning and salt and rubbing into meat on both sides. Place meat on wire rack uncovered; refrigerate 18-24 hours or overnight. Tip: If time doesn’t allow for overnight brining, let rubbed steak sit on wire rack at room temperature at least 1 hour. Cook to desired doneness with preferred indirect grilling method, placing food next to, instead of directly over, the fire. Gas or Charcoal Grill For gas grill, ignite one burner and leave others off. Adjust side burner until thermometer in grill lid reads 400 F. Place smoking box or foil pouch of wood chips over ignited burner. Place steak on grate over burners that are off. Keep grill covered and maintain temperature at 400 F. For charcoal grill, arrange hot coals evenly on one side of charcoal grate. Add wood chunks to coals and allow to smoke 10 minutes. Place drip pan with water in center of grate to keep drippings from burning. Place cooking grate over coals and place steak on grate, centered over drip pan. Place lid on grill. Adjust air vents to bring temperature to 400 F. Face side with filet mignon away from hottest portion of grill; larger side should be facing heat source. Smoke 40-55 minutes for medium-rare 48-ounce T-bone steak. Flip steak one time, halfway through cooking time. Verify temperature using kitchen thermometer before removing from grill. If desired, finish exterior of smoked steak over direct heat 1-2 minutes per side once it reaches desired temperature. Allow steak to rest 15 minutes before cutting and serving. Kettle or Bullet Smoker Arrange hot coals evenly on one bottom of smoker grate. Add wood chunks to coals and allow to smoke 10 minutes. Place drip pan with water under rack. Place cooking grate over coals and place steak on cooking grate centered over drip pan. Place lid on smoker. Adjust air vents to maintain 250 F. A medium-rare 48-ounce T-bone steak rested at room temperature for 1 hour prior to cooking should require 1 hour-1 hour and 15 minutes to reach proper temperature, which can be verified with a kitchen thermometer. If desired, finish exterior of smoked steak over direct heat 1-2 minutes per side once it reaches desired temperature. Allow steak to rest 15 minutes before cutting and serving.

While looking at photography on a phone can be fun, a device like the HP Sprocket Wireless Photo Printer, which can fit in a pocket, gives the option to print a 2-by-3-inch photo in as little as 40 seconds so favorite photos don’t get lost in cyberspace.

Today’s students probably spent most of their college years tapping keys to take notes and complete important tasks. While those habits will transition well to the corporate world, there are still plenty of reasons to have some quality pens available. Whether jotting quick notes while on a call or signing important documents, the job is more enjoyable with a high-quality pen in hand.
Take Initiative When starting a new job, a newbie needs to show just how much he or she is engaged in the work. Give them the opportunity to showcase value by documenting brainstorms, meeting notes and important deadlines in a discbound leather notebook, such as the TUL Note-taking system. Bonus: you can even pick out the paper inserts that best fit his or her personal style.
