has heart! My husband and I are big fans of this city. We’ve enjoyed many dates at downtown restaurants followed by strolls through the Historic Downtown Square, shopping at local businesses and even on occasion dancing to the music of the moonlit pavilion. Thank you city planners and design team who included that romance-inspiring feature!
The warm welcome I’ve received from city, community and business leaders the past few months as I’ve worked for this publication embodies the heart of Celina. You care about your community. You are proud about your city. And you want to see it become the best it can be. My number one desire for Celina Magazine is to help you tell Celina’s story by creating a quality publication you look forward to receiving monthly. Know that I will do everything I can to help produce a stellar magazine worthy of bearing the name “Celina.” For the past few months I’ve represented this magazine at many community events and had the privilege of partnering on stories with multiple leaders who call Celina home. Two key traits have been overwhelmingly evident in virtually every encounter, whether it is city officials, elected leaders, school administrators, business leaders or community volunteers: servant-hearted leadership and teamwork. Celina is encouraging people. Hard workers. Courageous. Innovative. Supportive. Believers in always doing the right thing even when no one is looking. I’m honored to be warmly welcomed into your “tribe.” It’s a privilege I do not take lightly and I look forward to helping you share and shape the vision of Celina’s past, present and future. Have an idea for a story about a local unsung hero? Know somebody humbly doing the exceptional? How about a business doing something special? Have a community event coming up? Email me details today at Pamela@WeAreCelina.com. Looking forward to hearing from you. Praying each student, family, teacher, faculty member and community volunteer has an exceptional 2014-2015 school year. Before fall schedules resume, take a moment today to savor summer. Maybe even share a moonlight dance in the pavilion with your family or loved ones. Eric and I may just be there to join you.

Add Balance to Packed Lunches and Snacks When you supply your kids with nutritious and sensible choices, you’re ensuring a productive day in the classroom and beyond. It’s simple to make lunch and snack time fun by tossing in some new, wholesome options that add variety and appeal for your little learner. Add new foods to the mix The most important nutrients parents seek when selecting the foods they feed their kids are protein, calcium, vitamin C, vitamin D and iron. While stocking up on foods rich in these nourishing elements is certainly helpful, there’s no way to ensure your child will eat them. But recent studies have found that kids are actually more likely than their parents to be the first of their friends to try new food or nutrition products. Take the opportunity to start nutritious eating habits at a young age with flavorful food combinations that create balance at snack and meal time. For example, pair a kid- and parent-pleasing choice, such as Mini Babybel ® cheese, a 100 percent natural cheese with a rich and creamy taste, with their favorite fruit or vegetable. In fact, a recent study shows that replacing non-nutrient rich snack foods like chips with a combination of cheese and vegetables can help reduce calories by 72 percent and keep kids feeling fuller longer. Easy ways to pack To help parents make better choices while grocery shopping, Catherine McCord, author of Weelicious Lunches and Weelicious.com, and Mini Babybel Brand Advocate, offers these tasty ideas to make lunches and snacks more wholesome for the whole family: • Protein Picks: To keep them feeling satisfied and fuller longer, include a few protein-packed choices in their lunch bag. Some options include roasted chicken, steamed edamame, hard boiled eggs, nuts or a Mini Babybel cheese. With seven delicious flavors that offer 5-6 grams of protein and 15-20 percent of daily calcium needs, this cheese snack is sure to satisfy. • Sweet Additions: Make their midday meal and snack time more complete with the addition of one or two servings of fruit. Some delicious options include apples, apricots, strawberries, blueberries, kiwis or pears. • Fresh Finds: Many vegetables offer fiber and other nutrients not found in other snacks. Throw in a bag of chopped vegetables, such as baby carrots, broccoli florets, celery, red bell peppers or sugar snap peas. With a balanced approach to eating, you’ll be able to send the whole family off to school or work prepared for whatever their busy day brings. You may also introduce them to some new favorite foods. For other snack and lunch ideas, visit www.mini-babybel.com.

//// Feature August signals the time to get supplies not yet purchased, find the perfect outfit for first-day-of-school photos, schedule haircuts and all other details getting ready for one of the biggest days of the year -- BackTo-School! This is a very exciting time to be part of the Celina Independent School District. Faculty, staff and volunteers have been busy this summer preparing for every aspect of your child’s education. Get ready, it’s going to be a great year! Pull out your calendars today and make note of the many CISD and other community activities planned for the coming month highlighted in our Calendar of Events featured on page 6. Then make plans to attend with family, friends, neighbors and loved ones. Our children are only young once so experience every aspect you can. Spending quality time with our kids is something we never regret.
Welcome Back CISD Family!
One of the most important ways we can educate our children is by sharing about the honor of being a blessing. Many families do not have the resources necessary to provide for “extras” like back-to-school supplies. Two community groups are helping provide these essentials for local children. Make this the year your children learn how to be a blessing! Celina Police Department is partnering with Hope’s Door, the only organization in Collin County specializing in comprehensive intervention and prevention for families affected by domestic violence, helping provide back-to-school supplies for local children. Cornerstone Assistance Network serves local neighbors in need and is planning a Back-to-School Bash for 100 local children, featuring backpacks with school supplies, sports physicals, vision and dental care, and opportunities to be involved in tutoring and other programs during the school year. Additionally, funds are being raised to hopefully provide each child with a new first day of school outfit, new pair of tennis shoes and hair cuts for back-to-school. Details for both of these blessing opportunities are available on Celina Magazine’s website - WeAreCelina.com and on our Facebook page - /CelinaMagazine. Need help finding your child’s school supplies list? Need to share information regarding new school locations with family members and caregivers? Updated school information, including CISD School Supplies Lists for Kindergarten through Sixth Grades, reconfiguration listing of 2014-2015 School Locations with addresses, and, other important information are all readily available at Celina Magazine’s website: WeAreCelina.com. “Like” our Facebook page (Celina Magazine) to be notified as breaking news about the CISD becomes available throughout the school year. Welcome back! Have a blessed school year Celina ISD Family!

Back-to-School Fashion Thrift by Caitlin Skidmore, staff Fashion Director
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to look amazing! The next time you shop, try mixing staples with thrifted items for a unique and budget-friendly style. If you’re thrifting, be sure you: • Go on a day you’re up for a “hunt.” • Sift through every item in the areas you’re interested in for the best finds. • Think outside the box. Looking for a blazer? Try the boys’ section for a large size. • Try on sizes and brands you wouldn’t normally, as well as anything that catches your eye. You never know until you try something on. • Ignore the label. No one else knows where you got that piece that fits perfectly, or what brand name is printed on the label. Same goes for size. Every designer is different, so try a size before ruling it out. • That being said, thrift stores often have top designer items; you just have to dig for them! • Walk away from anything that is stained, worn, doesn’t fit well (and can’t be tailored), or you don’t absolutely love. A waste of $2 is still a waste. • It’s always wise to wash purchases before use. If you’re nervous about an item, put it in a bag in the freezer for 48 hours to be safe. Some of the best items to thrift for back-to-school shopping include designer jeans, pieces with unique patterns and button-downs. Keep an eye out for these fall trends as well: boyfriend jeans (buy a few sizes bigger in a skinny jean than you would normally wear); anything plaid; knitwear; rich jewel tones; and animal-inspired prints. Whether you’re thrifting or bargain shopping, if you find the perfect piece that’s just a little too big, consider taking it to a tailor. Items that fit perfectly always look expensive. And if you only paid $1 for that top, a few extra dollars to get it fit precisely will make it look like you spent much more. Use these tips to find great deals at local resale stores including Cornerstone Assistance Network’s resale shop, The Attic, located at 210 W. Broadway in downtown Prosper. Find a great resale treasure? Shoot us a comment or photo to our Facebook page: /CelinaMagazine or email Pamela@WeAreCelina. com. Your treasure may be featured and you could be helping inspire other fashion shoppers!

//// CISD News
O
n behalf of the Celina School Board and our district faculty and staff, I would like to welcome all of you back for the 2014-2015 school year. Many of you have already noticed the changes that have been made to district campuses. These changes are an effort to stay ahead of the imminent growth that not only our district will experience, but the City of Celina as well. As you return to school this fall, the district has made many changes. The reconfiguration of the Intermediate and Middle School campuses has been completed. Celina Intermediate will now be home to grades 3 and 4. Our new Celina Middle School campus will house grades 5 and 6. Our former middle school campus, which will now be known as Celina Junior High will hold grades 7 and 8. The reconfiguration of these campuses will give the district some breathing room for the next two to three years. The new Celina Middle School campus, which was formally used for CTOWN has been under renovation since last April. Cafeteria and kitchen updates have been completed as well as technology upgrades. Two 24‘x68’ portable classrooms have been delivered to the west parking lot to complete the campus. Safety and security measures of our students and faculty were put to the test recently during our district’s security audit. The district was given high marks on the improvements that have been made throughout the district campuses and facilities. Mr. Bobby Manson, CISD Security Director will be in charge of keeping our facilities up to date and safety conscience. The Celina High School program CTOWN, will move across the street from its previous location. CTOWN is scheduled to open in September after renovations have been completed. Our Adult Education classes will now meet at the CISD Administration offices located on Colorado Street. Respecting the past is a huge part of our school district in keeping with our long-standing traditions of excellence in all that we do. Representing our future is evident in the students who leave the halls of Celina High School behind to take on their futures at university campuses all over the United States. At Celina ISD, we take pride in our efforts to strive to do what is best for all students who call our campuses home.

//// Volunteer Spotlight Celina Fire Department Builds on Century of Volunteerism
by Pamela Nishimoto
Today’s Celina Fire Department is the direct result of Dr. Walter Hubbard Stallcup’s vision when he helped organize the Celina Volunteer Fire Department in 1912. Stallcup’s father, a Celina farmer and stockman, supported his son’s dream to be a dentist. Graduating from St. Louis University Dental School in 1909, Stallcup returned home and invested his life in serving his community, practicing dentistry for 50 years and serving as a member of the Celina Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years, the majority as Chief. He also helped organize and coach Celina High School’s first football team - having played in college, and served on the Celina City Council and Celina School Board. Stallcup’s life reflects today’s modern day volunteer firemen, who range from local business people and community leaders to young men and women pursuing fire service careers. For centuries, volunteers have been the backbone of communities throughout Texas. “Every fire department in the MetroPlex started out with volunteers,” explains Chief Mark Metdker, who joined Celina Fire Department in 2008. “I’ve been in this business since 1975 and served 25 years in Addison. I would put the customer service of the Celina Fire Department against any in the state. We put strong emphasis on empathy, compassion of the patient and their loved ones, and quality of care. When people call us there is a sense of desperation. It is not a ‘normal day’ for them. We always consider, ‘How would you want to be treated if strangers came into your home during an emergency situation?’” Deputy Fire Chief Kyle Mills tells all incoming members of the department “If you treat everyone as if they are your grandmother, your mother, your family, your spouse, your kids, then you will never go wrong.” Mills played an instrumental role in Celina’s initiating its own Emergency Medical Service (EMS) in 2007, when he was a volunteer with the department. “The City received a 90-day notice that our current EMS provider was terminating their contract. In 72 days a team of fire department employees and volunteers, working with city and community leaders, organized and fulfilled every step necessary for state and federal licensing, as well as staffing and equipment needs to ensure Celina residents and businesses were protected.” Two fully-equipped ambulances were purchased by the City and five additional firefighter/medics were hired to ensure Celina’s ability to provide a paramedic and EMT on shifts 24/7. “On December 1, 2007, the Celina Fire Department initiated its own EMS,” states Mills. “Whenever you have EMS within the Fire Department you have control of quality of service. We want quality.” Volunteerism is a key to meeting the demands of a growing population. Jimmie Hollandsworth, owner of Jim’s Auto Supply, joined the Celina Fire Department in

1972 and has the distinction of being its longest continuously serving volunteer. He and his brother were auxiliary volunteer police officers for Celina in the 1960s who were “interested in the fire service and in helping our community.” “We served as volunteers for both. We’d already graduated high school and we wanted to help protect our city.” Hollandsworth currently serves as treasurer for the Celina Volunteer Firefighter Fund, overseeing how volunteer funds are managed and expended. The J.P. Loftice Memorial Scholarship, created in honor of a longtime volunteer Celina firefighter, is funded through these monies and is given annually to a Celina High School student interested in going into the fire service. The fire district for the Celina Fire Department currently consists of approximately 80 square miles, including portions of both Collin and Denton Counties. The department is comprised of both paid and volunteer firefighters. Paid staffing includes a full-time fire chief/fire marshal, deputy chief, three lieutenants and six firefighters/paramedics. In 2001 the first full-time firefighter was hired by the City of Celina. The longest-tenured paid staff member is the city’s second fire employee, Lieutenant Keith Brumfield, who joined the department in 2004 and currently serves as Fire Inspector. The department also utilizes approximately 40 volunteer firefighters. “These volunteers are men and women that give of their time and talents to the City of Celina and its’ residents,” states Deputy Fire Chief Mills. “We are actively recruiting for volunteers. They must be at least 18 years old and be either a TCFP/SFFMA certified Firefighter and/or TDHS EMT-Basic trained. We will pay to maintain their Fire and EMS certifications along with all necessary continuing education.” Candidates are required to pass a physical agility test, complete an oral interview and successfully complete a background check/drug screen. Additional details and applications are available at www.celina-tx.gov. Financially supporting the fire department since it’s origination, the City of Celina has provided funding for a majority of the volunteer needs. Since 2007, the City has paid for costs associated with training, new and recurring certifications, continuing education, personal protective equipment, daily operational costs, and other expenses for the volunteer firefighters. In 2013 the City again increased funding for volunteers, the only remaining expense paid through the Volunteer Fund being daily uniforms. Effective October 2014, everything needed by Celina Fire Department volunteers will be fully-funded by the City of Celina. Community members and businesses interested in supporting the Celina Fire Department are encouraged to contact one of the Fire Chiefs. One need is water - for the firefighters themselves. “Bottles of water are always needed,” shares Chief Metdker. “When there are structure fires or wildfires, drinking water is an essential priority.” Cases of bottled water can be donated and dropped off at the Celina Fire Station located at 311 N. Louisiana Drive. Additionally, funds donated to the non-profit Celina Volunteer Firefighter Fund helps augment department needs and provides scholarships for Celina High School students.
