Did You Know?? Did you know that before April 1982, the Celina Chamber of Commerce was only a women’s organization? Lynn Stambaugh, President of The First State Bank in 1982, sent out a letter to the community that encouraged business owners to get involved. His letter stated, “There is no better way to promote one’s town than through an active Chamber of Commerce.” The Celina Chamber of Commerce became officially incorporated in 1982 and started having monthly evening meals to help promote Celina and its businesses. The first Board of Directors was made up of Lourissia Haskell, Fran Mask, Jimmie Hollandsworth, Jerry Bob Willard, Willie Mae Dickerson, Craig Glendenning, Donald Hamm, Syd Reynolds, Jim Ritchie, Mary Rue, John Seay and Lynn Stambaugh. The membership dues were $100 for Businesses, $25 for Couples, $15 for an Individual and $5 for Senior Citizens. Business members were encouraged to pay an additional $10 for their spouse to be a member. Throughout the 1980’s the Chamber and its Board of Directors accomplished some great things. In October of 1983 they renamed the numbered streets in town to State streets. In May 1984, they voted to make Fun Day an annual event the 1st Saturday after Labor Day. In February 1987, the Chamber gave
out its first Citizen of the Year award to O.D. Hayes for “Maintaining the Square”. The Board was instrumental in funding the park on Louisiana Street and putting up the first sign on the “triangle” on Pecan Street as you enter Downtown Celina. Some interesting facts about the early days of the Celina Chamber: 1.1984 - The Chamber did not have any meetings during football season because attendance was so low. 2. On their call sheets there are only the last 4 digits of the phone number listed. 3. Most of their notes from meetings are in short hand and then typed on a typewriter later. 4. They funded the old gazebo on the square and had Saturday drawings downtown to encourage people to shop downtown on the weekends. By 1988, the Celina Chamber had 45 members and held its first Chamber Banquet at the First Baptist Church as a membership drive. The cost to attend was $7.50. The first Celina Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors had the wisdom to see the potential growth coming to Celina and used their innovative thinking to be the foundation of a strong, supportive business community.

2nd Annual
By Jill Roza
The 2nd Annual Celina Health and Safety Fair will be held on Saturday, August 1st, at Celina Junior High School from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Corina Ramos, former Bilingual Liaison for the Celina Independent School District kicked off this event last year in partnership with the City of Celina to bring awareness of health and safety issues to not only our community, but neighboring communities as well. There will be over thirty booths comprised of local and area businesses for attendees to pick up information regarding a wide range of health issues from nutrition to dental and vision care. Workshops will also be available throughout the event for those interested in learning more regarding mental health, Type II Diabetes and Allergy and Asthma conditions. Carter Bloodcare Mobile Unit will be here for those who would like to donate blood. In order to assure that our blood banks can accommodate those in our community, it is estimated that 1,100 donors are needed daily. It only takes 10-15 minutes and your donation saves three lives! Special thanks goes out to all of the participating businesses and sponsors for their dedication and support for this community event. For more information regarding the fair, visit our Facebook page “Celina Community Health and Safety Fair. We will update this page throughout the month of July with information regarding the fair and times for the workshops held throughout the day of the event. Admission to the Celina Community Health and Safety Fair is free, because nothing is more important than the health and safety of your family!

Activate Your Summer with These Simple Tips Fitness ideas to power up your season When short-sleeve shirts, tanks and shorts make their way into your everyday wardrobe, summer has officially arrived. And looking and feeling your best for all of those warm weather activities is important. Busy women know that being active means more than just picking up a few healthy habits; it requires daily dedication. But sometimes despite best laid plans, real life gets in the way. You miss that gym visit or sleep through that workout class. Make the most of your summer days with these tips that are not only fun, but will get you moving, even on the busiest days.

CELINA Magazine
Establish a summer schedule. With kids out of school, it can be easy to fall into a more laid-back routine. Fight the urge to turn on the television and create an active schedule with your children. After dinner, have a family walk around the neighborhood or plan for weekend outings to your favorite local nature preserve. Schedule a walking meeting at work. If sitting in an office is part of your daily routine, make a point to be active. Need to go over some items with a co-worker? Avoid booking the conference room, and plan a walking meeting outside or around the building. Getting your heartrate up and taking in some fresh summer air may be just what you need for successful brainstorming on the job. July 2015
Find motivation in all forms. Seek the help of like-minded individuals who also want to establish healthy routines. Look online for health and fitness blogs from other women who can share their own journeys toward better health. Or, invest in a wearable fitness device that offers a personalized experience, such as a Mira Fitness tracker, that understands your fitness level and offers tips and inspirational boosts relevant to you. For more information and to check out their blog visit www.mymirafit. com. Plan for an active vacation. Don’t let travel plans justify inactivity. Use your vacation as an opportunity to get moving, and create new healthy experiences. Visiting a historic town or city? Check out a walking group tour to sightsee. Hitting the beach? Try beach volleyball, surfing or stroll beside the water every night. No matter where your travels take you, you can always find a way to be active. Find ways to beat the heat. Don’t let the summer sun be your excuse to stay indoors on those extra hot days. Set your alarm early to get your morning run or hike in before those afternoon temperatures rise. Seek a refreshing, cool workout, such as water aerobics at the gym or paddle boarding at the lake when the temps are soaring.

In Good Taste
Warmer weather, longer days and smells of sizzling meat on the grill can only mean one thing — summer has officially arrived. As you gear up for the season of backyard barbeques and spontaneous weekend getaways, don’t let the cost of summer entertaining take a toll on your wallet. Consider stopping at ALDI, where you can find a variety of fresh produce and high quality cuts of grill-ready meat for up to 50 percent less* than traditional grocers, so you can spend less on your grocery bill and more on making summer memories last all year long. Sizzle into summer with these tasty tips and techniques that will make cookouts, road trips and impromptu pool parties mouthwatering for less: • Less Flipping, More Grilling: When grilling for that backyard barbeque, don’t make the mistake of constantly lifting the lid on your grill. Every time you lift the lid, you lose smoke, which will make your meat less flavorful! • Make More Time for Fun: Keep recipes simple so you can join the party and avoid getting stuck in the kitchen. Sometimes all you need for big flavor is to infuse simple spices into your meals. Whip up a quick dry rub with common spices like cumin, chili powder, oregano and peppercorns, and use when grilling meat, fish and even veggies. • Put a Fresh Twist on Comfort Foods: Add a twist to your barbeque staple foods to make your dish stand out. Stuff your burgers with jalapeño slices and cheddar cheese or top them off with unique flavors like pineapple, avocado or kiwi. It’s fun to mix and match different flavor combinations, and ALDI carries everything from organic grass fed beef to fresh pineapple. • Keep It Cool in the Sun: Have homemade freezer pops in your freezer for impromptu pool parties and neighborhood slip and slides. Mix up this traditional summer treat by combining a classic fruit flavor with an exotic one. Coconut flakes, cilantro or honey will add a unique spin on a classic snack. • Bring Adventure Home: Travel to a new city without going further than your local ALDI. Just switch up your go-to recipes with some regional flavors like Texas BBQ ribs or Chicago deep dish pizza. Follow the ALDI Summer Starts Here virtual road trip series for regional recipes, tips and tricks on the ALDI Simply Smarter Living Blog. Looking for more inspiration? These easy-to-make recipes will help you get

ready for summer. Visit www.aldi.us for more seasonal ideas. * Based upon a price comparison of comparable products sold at leading national retail grocery stores. Hand-Held Snacks Keep your road trip simple and pack finger food snacks that can easily be taken on the go. Quesadillas are quick to make for grab and go meals, and taste great with a combination of sweet and savory flavors. • Experiment with fun flavors like ricotta cheese and strawberries; sweet potatoes and black beans; or blueberries and cream cheese. • Make batches ahead of time and have on-hand for when the kids get hungry. Just heat and serve for a simple snack. • Incorporate fresh spices and produce to keep variations fun and unique all summer long.

Summer Fun for Kids Activities that foster a love of reading
While it may seem easier to let kids beat the heat by spending lazy days in front of the television or tablet, parents should take advantage of the many learning opportunities the summer offers. Why is learning so critical this time of year? During the summer months, many children will lose some of the skills they obtained during the school year. Students who lose reading ability over the summer rarely catch up. In fact, research from the Annie E. Casey Foundation shows that 75 percent of students who are poor readers in third grade, a critical grade for literacy skill building, remain poor readers in high school.

CELINA Magazine
Improved learning, one child at a time To help children keep and develop this essential skill, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) has joined forces with Macy’s to help keep kids laughing and learning with enriching summer activities and children’s book favorites. The key to helping children maintain and even improve their literacy skills over the summer is providing access to quality books that they can choose based on personal interests. When children have books readily available to them, they are motivated and empowered to read, helping improve their overall success in school and life.
Macy’s is helping to ensure children have access to high-quality books through its Be Book Smart campaign. The store invites customers nationwide to give $3 at their local store to help provide a book for a child in need. As a thank you, customers get $10 off a purchase of $30 or more, plus 15% or 20% off storewide. 100% of the proceeds go directly to RIF to provide books and learning resources to children who need them most. Customers not only give children the opportunity to build their literacy skills, but also the opportunity to experience the magic and power of books. July 2015

How to Survive the Stress of Summer
By Tracie Miles at Proverbs31.org
“The LORD gives his people strength. The LORD blesses them with peace.” Psalm 29:11 (NLT) The threat of summer craziness was becoming a reality. I settled in a chair at my kitchen table, surrounded by the clutter of information sheets regarding work obligations, sports practices, mission trips and church activities. Pulling out my family calendar, I mapped out the summer months. After writing down all our commitments, I stared at the endless scribbles etched across practically every date. We had only one free week during the entire summer. With a heavy sigh and swirling thoughts, I felt a twinge of stress and anxiety slowly rising up in my chest. I couldn’t help but wonder, isn’t summer supposed to be footloose and fancy-free? What happened to sleeping in and time to rest and unwind? Are relaxing summer days merely a thing of the past? Now, it seems like the summer can instead be filled with days when the kids are bored and whiny, camps get cancelled, work interferes with vacation plans, the AC goes out, and traffic is horrendous. Days when we lose our patience, harbor a bad attitude, and have had quite enough of family time. Days when we feel powerless against the exhaustion of our busy schedule and stress rules the roost. It may seem that easy summers are long gone. However, we can make it through the hectic days and stay at peace despite the chaos. In Psalm 29:7 God promises He will help with whatever we face: “The LORD gives his people strength. The LORD blesses them with peace.” There are several keys to God’s peace overriding the mayhem. When we remember to focus on God’s sweet goodness, instead of all the scribbles on our calendar, we can be proactive in managing summertime. We can receive God’s calm, even in a busy and sometimes stressful time of the year. Here are some specific ways to do so: Focusing on all the good things God has done for us, instead of the challenges of summer. Remaining calm and praying for God’s peace when the demands of family and life seem overwhelming. Asking God to give us rest and strength when we begin to feel stretched thin and worn out. We can also take some additional steps to keep summer stress at bay. Such as: Take daily mini-vacations. Try to set aside at least five minutes per hour to stretch and take a break. When you take days off from your work or daily routine, unplug completely—meaning no phone or emails. Keep a checklist or a detailed calendar of all scheduled activities. Do something for yourself once a week: take a bubble bath, read a good book, spend time outdoors or take a nap. Busyness and stress can heat up quicker than the summer sun. But it is possible to stay cool on the inside. Whether we are low in spirit or low in energy, depending on God and seeking a daily infusion of His strength and peace can ensure a less stressful summer. “Dear Jesus, sometimes I allow the chaos of summer to distract me from spending time with You. I neglect to claim Your peace and allow myself to get bogged down with the stressors of the season. I get frustrated with my children, rather than treasuring this time with them. Help me to focus on You when I begin to feel overcommitted and to seek Your peace with each rising sun. In Your Name, Amen.”
