Safe Halloween Fun with Pets Including pets in your family’s Halloween festivities can be a fun addition to your celebration. However, with all the excitement comes the chance for pets to get into danger or trouble. You can head off potential problems and enjoy an evening of fun with some safety tips and smart planning. Keeping your pet away from candy and other Halloween treats is especially important because so many favorites include chocolate, which is potentially toxic for dogs. It’s also an ideal time to practice obedience commands with your four-legged friends, as crowds of unfamiliar people, costumes and lots of open doors can create temptations too hard to resist. To include your furry family members while still keeping them safe during the fun, follow this advice from the pet experts at PetSmart: Trick-or-treating together • Before hitting the streets, make sure your dog is socialized around kids, adults and other animals. • Bring water and treats such as crunchy Blue Buffalo Boo Bars to reward your dog for good behavior and reduce the desire to go for kids’ candy. • Increase nighttime visibility with LED leashes, collars or harnesses, or look for the light-up Halloween outfits available at PetSmart this year. Pawsitively good party manners • Before guests arrive, practice “leave it” or a similar command. This is useful to help pets avoid candy or food they might encounter on the ground. Trainers can help you get it down right. • Establish a rule that guests don’t feed the dog – candy or human food. A new interactive toy or long-lasting rawhide may keep your pup busy and out of temptation’s way. Many ingredients commonly found in Halloween candy can be harmful to your pet. For example, xylitol, found in gum and candy can cause dangerously low blood sugar or liver disease in dogs. Chocolate can create a range of symptoms, from vomiting to abnormal heart rhythm to death. Even snacks that are healthy for humans, such as raisins can cause a toxic reaction. • Prevent your dog from running out an open door by working on a “stay” command. PetSmart’s expert trainer Debbie McKnight explains how to teach this trick: Ask your dog to sit, and praise him when he obeys. While your dog is sitting, say “stay” and place your hand flat with your palm facing the dog. Wait 2-3 seconds then give your dog a treat. You can increase the time he stays by a couple of seconds every three repetitions, working up to 30 seconds. • If you aren’t confident about your dog’s abilities, keep him on a leash while the doorbell is ringing.

Costume comfort and safety • A costume should never constrain or bother your pet. If your pet isn’t comfortable, try a strap-on costume that attaches loosely with snaps or around the pet, or find other ways to look festive such as Pet Expressions, available in the PetSmart grooming salon. • Once a costume fits properly, make sure your pet won’t trip on anything like a cape or ribbon. Check for little parts within chewing distance and keep identification tags on collars. • Throughout the evening, watch your pet and make adjustments as needed. You may need to cut or remove portions of the costume to increase a pet’s comfort. The most important part of the evening is your pet’s safety. For more tips on pet safety, as well as costumes and events, visit your local PetSmart or www.PetSmart. com/halloween. October 2014

ust the mention of fall brings to mind pumpkins, cool temperatures, Big Tex, and an array of vibrant colors adorning the trees. At Celina ISD, it also means a busy time of year for our students, parents, and faculty. The Celina School District calendar fills up quickly during the fall months with not only athletic and academic events, but includes numerous club meetings and informational nights for parents and students. Our Athletic calendar is filled each week with numerous volleyball, cross country and football activities for all to enjoy. We have over three hundred young men and women who participate in high school athletics as well as that same number who compete on the Junior High level. Celina High School Junior Varsity and Varsity Volleyball teams play on Tuesday and Friday nights. We are fortunate to have three Junior Varsity football teams that compete every Thursday. This is followed by our Varsity Football game on Friday, which showcases the talents of our drill team, cheerleaders and our very own Bobcat Brigade. Weekends are not free here in Celina and are usually filled with a variety of Cross Country meets, volleyball tournaments, and band competitions stretching across North Texas. For our younger students, the season of fall means field trips to the Pumpkin Patch, pumpkin decorating competitions, and Boo Parades. Students across the district are enjoying many activities that revolve around the fall theme including Johnny Appleseed, Homecoming festivities, and learning about those who came before us creating the land on which we live and work. The fall would not be complete without the Texas State Fair and a “Howdy” from Big Tex. The Celina High School FFA department has represented our district for many years through numerous competitions held during the weeks of the State Fair. Not only have Celina students won many awards associated with not the animals that they

12

have nurtured and raised, but also through the countless projects they have created and physically built for competition. Fall also finds our band, choir, and theatre students memorizing choreography, musical scores, or creating characters for the stage. The Celina Bobcat Band spends numerous hours before school perfecting their show. Tuesday nights you will find our Bobcat Band running through each measure of this year’s contest material, perfecting their performance on Bobcat Field. For band members, the month of October means weekend travel to numerous marching competitions held throughout the DFW area. The choir and theatre students are spending enormous amounts of time putting the finishing touches on their latest theatre production. If you have not had the pleasure of attending a performance by our award-winning band, choir or theatre department, there will be many opportunities in the coming months to witness the wealth of talent we have here in the Celina Fine Arts Department. As you can see, the fall is a busy time of year, especially for those students who participate in extra curricular activities. These students find themselves with very limited free time and what time they have is spent preparing for their classes. The faculty and staff of Celina ISD understand the commitment and sacrifice that these students make in order to represent our school district. Our teachers and staff members share that same commitment by preparing students for success, not only for today, but also for the future.

S&S PALLETS Columbus And Michele Fulghum, Owners I’m a hometown girl born here. My family includes parents Mencie and William Fore, grandparents Charlie and Willia Ross and four sisters – Valecia, Sharon, Deidre and Shelsea. Our momma kept us all busy in sports, drill team, cheerleading and FCA. Celina is a wonderful, safe place for families. When I moved back with my daughter, I knew she would receive a good education. Now we have two grandchildren in Celina ISD. In 2007, I met and married my husband Columbus. He loves the small town atmosphere. His parents Columbus Sr. and Vernel Fulghum moved from Lufkin, Texas to North Dallas (Hamilton Park). He attended Lake Highlands High and then Tyler Jr. College, but the passing of his Dad forced him to leave and go to work. Columbus has had some great jobs (Honeywell, EDS, ROCKWELL and TRUCK DRIVER), but that wasn’t what he wanted to do. He had to be his own boss. Columbus continued driving trucks in the mornings, and at night he would pick up pallets in Prosper, Celina, Frisco and McKinney. On the weekend he would go and sell them. Some of the companies would pay well but some were not so great. It’s a blessing that my husband has the gift of gab – he meets no strangers! He loves to talk and someone told him about this company (Champion Pallet) that would buy his pallets. Columbus started doing business with them. We knew there had to be something better than driving all day and night…well this is how amazing God is! He was called to this big corporation to pick up and clean their pallets. That one time was a blessing that went on for years, but then things changed in 2009. The pallet company that bought our pallets changed owners. First, the prices

18

Celina Magazine

| Fall

went down and kept getting lower and lower. Then, they went out of business. Things got really bad…those old pallet companies that we had sold to in the past weren’t paying top price. They paid as little as they could. We took a hard hit…for an entire trailer load of pallets, over 300 actually, we were paid $83!! We had to put diesel in the truck so we could go home. We cried as we thought about what we were going to do now. Being a man of God, my husband said, “It’s going to be alright. He will never leave or forsake us.” The only thing that we could come up with was building pallets for this corporation. We prayed about it all night…the next morning we had a meeting with the CEO. We discussed the idea of building pallets for them. He was all for it! In 2010, we started with the research for the bank and put our portfolio together for a loan. A year later, we found our shop on County Road 95. We started with 5 people. You know God keeps you on your toes…in August 2012, we had a fire in the warehouse. It didn’t get the big equipment, but for a while, we had to work outside. We have some great employees, because the fire slowed us down but did not stop us! Our theme at S & S PALLETS: KEEP CHOPPING AT THE BLOCK. When things get rough and times get hard, this saying and the grace of God means everything for us. S&S Pallets 11189 Co. Saving by Budgeting Joanna Coleman, AVP Prosper Bank

I

remember my parents telling me as I went through school, that if I wanted something then I needed to save up money for it. Back then, I was saving for the latest designer jeans, gas for my car and movie night. Now that I have my own family responsibilities, my focus has shifted drastically as to what I save money for; however, the concept behind saving money remains the same. If you want something then you need to save up money for it. One of the first steps in saving money is coming up with a realistic budget based on what money you have coming in and going out. Budgeting is an estimate of expected income and expected expenses. A good rule of thumb for income and expenses that are not the same amount month to month is to plug in income amounts low and plug in expense amounts high. The simplest way to budget is to take a piece of paper and write down how much you make in a one month timeframe; then write down the

TC

®

cost of your bills. Budgeting will help you see how much money you have to work with. The difference in your income and the amount of your bills could be used for ‘big ticket’ items or for additional savings. Budgeting is always a work in process. You will need to look back at the end of each month and determine how accurate your budget for the month really was. It is a good idea to save your receipts for every purchase and compare them to your budget. By revisiting your budget, you will have a better feel for exactly where your money is going each month and this will help you determine what spending habits you need to adjust in order to save more money. There are a wide variety of tools online that can help you budget. The key is to pick a budget tool that works for you and then stick with it. Keep in mind that if you have another income stream (such as a spouse) you both need to be committed and actively striving to stay within your budget.
