Dear Celina ISD Families, It is with great excitement that I welcome you back for another fantastic school year! It’s hard to believe that in a few short weeks we will once again be opening our doors for the 2018-2019 academic year. We are extremely excited to get this year started with the knowledge that our students will be under the care of the very best educators in the State of Texas! The first day of school is an exciting day for all of us. My team has spent the summer months preparing our campuses and facilities for the arrival of our students. Our faculty members have focused on their learning by spending countless hours attending workshops to bring the best strategies to their classrooms. From workshops to running bus routes, we are looking forward to all of the great things that will be happening in our district this upcoming year. As you arrive back on our campuses this August, you will notice new faces that joined our district over the past few months. Our new staff members are excited to bring their expertise in their fields of study to our students and we are blessed to have an amazing group of faculty members that bring a high level of commitment and engagement to give their students the tools they need to be successful. I have also had the pleasure to speak with many new families that have moved into our district over the summer. The word “growth” will be used over and over during the next few years. One only has to take a drive around the district to see the numerous new housing developments that are underway, which makes it very clear to what the future holds for our city and schools. Celina ISD is very committed to ensuring the safety of our students, faculty, and staff members. Security on our campuses is not taken lightly and safety procedures will be followed for all individuals visiting any of our CISD facilities. A security survey was available to our families and community over the summer break. The results of the survey will be shared with our board members after the start of the school year and will determine what direction the district will move in order to provide additional security support for our campuses. Our theme for the year is “Unified.” We are all unique due to the different backgrounds and experiences that we bring to the table, but no matter our background, ethnicity or religion, we can find common ground to stand unified in accomplishing our goals. Together, as we embark on this new year, may it be filled with discovery, challenges and excitement as we continue to pave the path for our students to achieve their dreams. I look forward to welcoming our new and current students back to school on Wednesday, August 16th, when our CISD family will be reunited once again as we prepare for another epic year! Sincerely,
Mr. Rick DeMasters Superintendent of Schools Celina ISD

CELINA Magazine’s Business of the Month
AUGUST The Animal Hospital of Celina Dr. Allison Stead opened The Animal Hospital of Celina in January 2004. In the beginning, she practiced out of a temporary metal building until her permanent building opened in January 2005. The Animal Hospital of Celina (AHOC) is a beautiful, free standing building offering medical and surgical services for dogs, cats and now birds, small mammals and reptiles. AHOC offers onsite boarding and grooming. Boarding for our canine friends provides indoor, climate controlled large dog runs and a very large outdoor, secure play area that the dogs visit multiple times per day. Our feline friends have a separate boarding area from the dogs with specialized cat apartments…quiet and cozy! At AHOC, they believe in providing exceptional personalized care to each of their clients and beloved pets. They work hard to create an individual care plan for each of their patients. They get to know their clients and their families and pets, and after 14 years in the community considers their clients to be friends as well. Their philosophy is to provide excellent customer service and animal care. They strive to always listen to their client’s concerns and provide the needed information and care requested for each of their furry family members. Their personalized care and customer service keeps loyal clients returning again and again. The Animal Hospital of Celina’s vision is to always keep customer and patient care as their primary concern, and to continue to be a valued and beneficial business in the community of Celina, Texas. Their mission is to continue to provide compassionate, current, and honest care for patients and for their adoring owners.
and Gunter ISD. They love to support Celina, and particularly our Celina students! After many years of providing only veterinary services for dogs and cats, they are now able to provide for the veterinary needs of birds, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, guinea pigs, other small mammals and even reptiles! The closest veterinarian that provides services for exotics is in Frisco – so they have given the Celina community a wonderful resource right here locally. Dr. Stead is married to Doug Stead and has 2 daughters, Kaylyn Schultz Appleyard and Lauren Schultz, as well as a stepson, Travis Stead. Their animal collection includes 2 dogs – a Golden Retriever named Tucker, and Sammy, a Bouvier. They also have 2 cats, Howard and Bunny. Dr. Stead graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990. Before opening her own practice in 2004, Dr. Stead previously worked at a 5 doctor practice in Plano as the staff veterinarian providing medical services and spays and neuters for the City of Plano Animal Shelter. In addition to that, she worked for several years at the Collin County Animal Emergency Clinic. Dr. Clara Bush Vadala joined the AHOC team in June 2018. Dr. Vadala graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in May 2018. She sees dogs and cats, as well as birds, small mammals and reptiles in our office! Dr. Vadala graduated from Celina High School in 2010. She has 3 dogs and 2 cats and is married to Adam Vadala.
They have always taken a very active role in community support. Some of the programs they sponsor are the Celina Quarterback Club, Las Gatitas, the Celina Band, the Celina FFA, the Chamber of Commerce, Cajun Fest, C.A.R.E., the Celina Cheerleaders, Project Graduation, the Celina PTA, the Preston Trail Rotary Club

Try these tactics the next time you want the 411 on your kids’ day: Put some thought into the questions you ask. “The best way to get your kids to open up is to use open ended questions,” says Richard Peterson, Vice President of Education at Kiddie Academy. “Open-ended questions often begin with: why, what, who and how.” Since younger kids don’t really have a concept of time, you can ask specific details that will help narrow down the day. “Will you sing me a song that you learned at school today?” “Did you play any math games?” Don’t forget to add in a mix of fun questions, like who they sat with at lunch or what they liked most about playtime.

What did you do in school today? Nothing. How many times have you asked your kids what they did at school and their response is lackluster? More specifically, they say “nothing.” We’ve all been there, and as frustrating as it might be for parents it’s not necessarily anyone’s fault. Perhaps “nothing” means your kids read a new book or made a new friend at lunchtime. We know they did something, so the only way you’ll really find out is with a little extra tenderness. Parents want to know about their child’s daily schedule, who their children interacted with, what they did and what they learned. Unfortunately, the answer becomes muddled in your child’s cryptic and spotty description of a day in the life of a 2- or 3-year old. Most times, you’ll be lucky if you get an accurate account of that day’s lunch menu.
Revisit later. Sure, wanting to ask your kid’s how their day went as soon as you pick them up seems like a natural reaction. But oftentimes your tykes just want to go home and relax first. And that’s okay! Try waiting it out until they’ve had an afternoon snack or when everyone is settled at the dinner table.
Give your children some time to reflect. As with revisiting questions about their day, you might find that giving your kids time to reflect will often lead to insightful answers. Letting kids process their day before answering questions will make for a more relaxed atmosphere for everyone. Academy Link. Kiddie Academy of Prosper offers individual electronic reports for each child maintained throughout the day and delivered to parents at pick-up. They include photos and videos of their children from throughout the day, each child’s portfolio of work, details about their lunch and snacks, and an account of all the lessons and activities the classroom worked on that day. These daily reports are great conversation starters as they give parents insight into their child’s day. I am Rosh R, the owner of Kiddie Academy of Prosper, located at 650 North Preston Road. We are excited to open our brand-new, state-of-the-art academy in the Fall of 2018 in the Prosper community. We serve children ages 6 weeks through 12 years. The educational programs at Kiddie Academy of Prosper emphasize continuous, open communication between teachers and parents concerning each child’s development. But most importantly, we learn while we’re having fun. We invite children to embark on the Kiddie Academy journey that will enable them to learn and grow socially, physically and intellectually. Dr. Blake Hemphill Dr. Blake Hemphill and the staff at Hemphill Orthodontics are excited and ready to take care of all your orthodontic needs. Dr. Hemphill attended Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas and then completed his residency to specialize in orthodontics and dento-facial orthopedics at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. In orthodontics, he loves that he gets to watch people’s lives change as they see their smiles change. “People come to us because they want the services we offer, and we believe that makes our office environment always a positive one. The nature of our treatment gives us the opportunity to get to know families and connect with our community. Through our regular treatment visits, we form meaningful relationships with our patients, and that gives us a great sense of fulfillment.” Blake, his wife Kayli and their son Witten, started their business here, and also make their home here, in Celina. They first visited after being told how great of a family environment it is. They believe that it’s very exciting and an added bonus to be the first orthodontist in Celina, and to know they can provide care with a convenient schedule and location. “We truly believe that you won’t find another place as dedicated to excellence. We believe in caring for the person first and putting them above ourselves. We would be honored to be chosen as your orthodontic team.” Hemphill Orthodontics is a local practice specializing in providing orthodontic care, including braces and Invisalign, for children, teens, and adults. They are focused on creating a family-centered office environment and pride themselves on offering the highest quality treatment available. They believe that what they do is important and makes a difference in people’s lives, while working hard to ensure that their patients’ experiences reflect that.

2018 SMILE PROFILES Dr. Veronica Mueller Dr. Veronica Mueller, a Texas-educated dentist, opened her private practice in July of 2017. The daughter of a teacher and a career military officer, she grew up in multiple states and countries, but returned to her family’s home state of Texas as soon as she could. Veronica moved to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University, completing a Bachelors of Science in Biology. She then moved to Houston to attend The University of Texas School of Dentistry, earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery. While living in the Houston Medical Center, Veronica took the opportunity to expand her repertoire by learning from some of the greatest minds in medicine. Upon completing her Doctor of Dental Surgery, Veronica practiced her profession in different settings, gaining knowledge of all types of dentistry. After gaining professional experience, Veronica and her husband, John, chose Prosper as the ideal place to put down roots. When drawing the plans for Gentle Creek Dental, Dr. Mueller knew she wanted to utilize the best equipment and newest technology. Before opening her office, she attended many trainings and C.E. in order to decide on the best equipment and to make sure she was up to date on all the latest technology and techniques. Digital radiography was a must have for her practice. This technology takes the fastest x-rays with the least amount of radiation. And not only are all her x-rays digital, so are the charting and files, eliminating most paperwork. Along with a hand-held X-Ray system, they also use intra oral pictures to help in the diagnosing for your treatment plan. Dr. Mueller is very proud to use digital scanning. Not only is it a great time saver for the patients, it’s pretty cool too. When needing a dental appliance (crown, bridge, retainer etc.) that must be fabricated in the lab, your teeth are scanned instead of using the goopy, old-school dental impressions. After the scan is complete, you can see the 3D image on the computer screen. It can be rotated, zoomed and much more. And since the files are digital, they can be effortlessly sent to the lab, saving time and eliminating steps that could lead to distortions. This is Dr. Mueller’s favorite tech toy. As technology advances, many more additions may be implemented. Dr. Mueller’s core belief is that lifelong learning is critical to providing excellent care and optimal health. She is proud to be the 3rd generation of dentists in her family. Dedicated to creating a dental practice focused on the needs of the people she serves, she sums up her objective quite simply with saying, “My goal is to have a dental practice that offers everything that I want as a patient.” She invites you to stop by her offices, take the grand tour, and visit with the Gentle Creek Dental Family. They are open Tuesday through Friday, with Saturday hours by appointment.

2018 SMILE PROFILES Dr. Tom Bietsch CONVENIENCE…EXPERIENCE…EXCELLENCE! Dr. Bietsch focuses on these three factors for all of his patients. His goal is to make every appointment convenient for his patients and their family. Imagine, you are in the middle of your work day and your child’s orthodontic appointment is in thirty minutes. Instead of leaving work early to drive across town so you can pick your child up from school and take them to their appointment, you were able to stay at work while your child was able to make their orthodontic appointment. Well, you can if your child is a patient at Bietsch Orthodontics. Dr. Bietsch built a thirty-six-foot custom mobile orthodontic office for his patients that goes to your child’s school. Dr. Bietsch’s “Bietsch Brace Bus” has everyone talking and for good reason. Parents couldn’t be happier with the ease of one less appointment that they have to manage into their already busy schedule. Parents receive a video update of their child and Dr. Bietsch at the time of their appointment that explains how their child’s orthodontic treatment is progressing. Parents win here at Bietsch Orthodontics because we bring orthodontics to the schools, so they do not have to miss any work. Students win as well because they are out of class much less time and do not have to miss that after school practice or game because they needed to go to their orthodontic appointment. Dr. Bietsch sees how demanding parent’s schedules are and even more with multiple children, that is why he has created the mobile brace bus; a service that makes ortho appointments for your child and you more convenient. Dr. Bietsch travels with most of his team too. At all mobile bus appointments, your child will be accompanied by Dr. Bietsch, his treatment coordinator, scheduling coordinator and his three-chair side ortho assistants. Long appointments such as getting braces put on or taken off will be done in the primary office at Bietsch Orthodontics, but all adjustment appointments can be accommodated at your child’s school. Dr. Bietsch has treated over 10,000 patients in his nineteen-year career as an orthodontist. He uses this experience to customize treatment plans for every patient to give them a unique beautiful smile. Everyone is unique; therefore, every patient gets a smile that is all their own. The convenience of Dr. Bietsch’s mobile bus, combined with his nineteen years of experience, and his ability to create custom, beautiful smiles sets his practice apart from any other orthodontic office in Texas. His unbelievable care for each patient and ability to create perfection within your child’s smile is why so many parents and patients love going to Bietsch Orthodontics.

GROWING Celina with Jimmie Gibson Jr.
"LEAVES OF THREE LET IT BE" Although the kids are about to head back to school, we are still in the midst of summer in Texas. And, since I have received at least 60 emails from folks around town about this subject, I’d like to remind folks of a little green plant/vine that can certainly dampen your fun. I have been seeing it growing very vigorously all around the Celina area, so please take a moment to refresh yourselves on this!
This rhyme pertains to the identification of two of the Big Three…poison ivy and poison oak. The rhyme does not, however, pertain to identifying the third member of the triad of poisonous plants with which to avoid contact -- the Poison Sumac bush. However, people are far more likely to come into contact with the other two members of the triad than with poison sumac. The plant's 3-leaf trademark assumes a reddish tinge when the leaves first come out in the spring, but the leaves turn green in the summer. Although the color of its berries is often mentioned as a way of identifying the plant, it is not as reliable as is leaf identification. The berries, after all, are produced only at the end of the growing season; knowing about the berries would do you little good when attempting identification in the spring. Incidentally, poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac all have white berries. The non-poisonous varieties of sumac have red berries. But if you're reading this article while plagued with the itching that the plant brings, you'll be much more interested in hearing some treatment tips and the quickest way getting back to life as you normally live it! I can still remember my first adventure with poison Ivy on a fishing trip with my dad at the age of 6 years old, but of course my dad convinced me it was worth it since we caught all those fish! Is Poison Ivy Rash Contagious? Now that we've identified poison ivy, let's consider the matter of treating poison ivy rash. When we speak of a cure or treatment for poison ivy rash, we generally mean relief from its symptoms. Once the symptoms occur (itchy bumps on your skin), relief is the only remedy we seek -- before we scratch ourselves to death! Different people find different degrees of relief by treating poison ivy rash with over-the-counter remedies, such as hydrocortisones. Despite its inclusion in the classic rock song, "Poison Ivy," even Calamine lotion has its limitations as a treatment. Some people have such a severe reaction to poison ivy that they need to visit a physician and get a shot. It usually takes about two weeks to get rid of poison ivy rash. But there is another kind of treatment of poison ivy rash:
22

namely, prevention. If you realize you've just come into contact with poison ivy, take the following steps immediately:
1.Apply rubbing alcohol to the infected area.
2.Rinse with water (any water).
3.Wash up with soap and warm water.
So what makes poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac…well, poisonous? The answer is urushiol, which is the sap that runs through all parts of the plant. Grazing against poison ivy with any exposed part of your body is all that it takes to release this poison. Complicating matters further, contact with poison ivy does not even have to be direct for you to contract the rash. For instance, if your dog runs through some poison ivy, then you stroke your dog's fur with your hand; you could come into contact with the sap and develop a rash. Likewise, if someone else had been working in a poison ivy-infested area with gloves, then you came along and touched those contaminated gloves, you could get the rash. So, if the poison is spread that easily, poison ivy must be contagious, right? Wrong. It's only the urushiol that puts you at risk. Scratching your bumps doesn't cause the poison ivy to spread to other areas of your body. Nor will you contract the rash just by touching somebody else's rash bumps. Poison Ivy Control: Get Rid of It with Organic Methods, Herbicides First of all, a word about prevention is in order, before discussing any actions to be taken for getting rid of poison ivy plants on the landscape. When approaching poison ivy to engage it in battle, try to have as little of your skin exposed as possible, since it is through physical contact with any part of the plant that the rash is contracted. At the very least, this means wearing gloves, long-sleeved shirt and full-length pants. Secondly, understand that any of the methods discussed below may have to be implemented more than once to achieve complete success. One organic method to eradicate, or at least control, poison ivy is to pull it out by the roots. The roots must be disposed of, but do not burn! Inhaling fumes from burning poison ivy causes far greater health problems than just the rash caused by skin contact. Another natural method is to smother the poison ivy. Smothering entails cutting it back close to the ground, then placing newspapers, cardboard, old carpeting, tarps, mulch or some other covering on top of it. However, be aware that, even after they are killed, the plants remain toxic. So be careful in disposing of the roots of the dead plants after pulling back the smothering agent…even if you've waited for years.
Herbicides can also be used in the control or eradication of poison ivy. Roundup spray is a popular glyphosate-based herbicide for killing poison ivy. Another widely-available herbicide is Ortho Brush-BGon, which is triclopyr-based. But they will kill many other plants, too, so don't use them near plants you wish to keep. If you choose to apply these herbicides by spraying, here's what to do:
Small Animal Medicine and Surgery
• You'll need a tank sprayer; mix the product with water, according to directions.
Birds, Exotics, Pocket Pets and Reptiles All Dog and Cat Breed Grooming and Boarding
• Apply when the poison ivy is fully leafed out. • Pick a day with little or no wind for spraying. Also, check your forecast: don't spray if rain is predicted at any time within the next 24 hours. • For poison ivy growing on the ground or on a wall, heavily spray the leaves and vines of the poison ivy. Old plants have large hairy vines -- another dead giveaway for identifying poison ivy. • For poison ivy climbing up a tree, you may wish to "paint" the herbicide on, so as to preclude damaging the tree with a stray mist from your sprayer. Until next Gardening!!
