What is Faith? Faith is one of those good bible words that everyone says, but few fully understand. We may ask the question “What faith are you?” - meaning what kind of church do you attend. But real faith, the faith that the Bible talks about, is different. The best place to look for the Bible definition of the word “faith” is in fact in the Bible. Hebrews 11:1 AMPC - “NOW FAITH is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].” The writer of Hebrews gives us the Bible definition of faith. Faith is not a religion, faith is not an abstract spiritual concept. Faith is a real substance, an assurance, a confidence, a belief of things that are not revealed to the natural senses. The Amplified translation of the Bible uses the term “title deed”. A good example of faith is owning a car. When you purchase a vehicle, you receive the title. That title is your assurance in ownership of that car. You can be certain it is yours, not because of a feeling you have, but because you have the title and it’s in your name. If someone were to question you about your ownership of that car, you don’t have to display the car to them to prove you own it. You can simply show them the title for that car and that title is the proof it belongs to you. Faith is an assurance, like a title deed, not of things we can see, touch, smell or hear, but an assurance that God is who He said He is, and He will do what He says He will do. Faith is believing in something you can’t see. In Mark 11:22 Jesus said to have “faith in God”. Jesus was telling us to trust in Him, have confidence in Him, even when you don’t see something or feel something, trust in His goodness, kindness, and His Word. You can have faith in God. Chris Carter is the pastor at Movement Church, located in Downtown Celina on the Square. Services are on Sunday mornings at 10:30am. From The Desk of Rick DeMasters
Greetings Bobcat Nation: We are about to embark on an exciting time for the Celina Independent School District! After many months of research, meetings, and reviewing data collected from Templeton Demographics, Claycomb Associates Architects, NorthStar Builders and the SAMCO Financial Group, the members of the Celina ISD Bond Steering Committee brought forth their recommendation for consideration to call for a bond election. The recommendation was made to the Trustees during the January School Board meeting. Our Trustees were asked to approve an order calling for a bond election to be held by the Celina Independent School District on May 4, 2019. Our Celina ISD Board of Trustees unanimously cast their votes in favor of a bond in the amount of $600 million that will address student enrollment growth. Also approved with the bond package is an added inflation rate percentage.Due to the fact that the projects listed in the bond package will not be completed at the same time, the approval of an inflation rate percentage is added to the project budget predictions based upon their future start dates. Over the next few weeks, the district will be forming committees that will be responsible for distributing the Celina Bond information to our voters. The “Frequently Asked Questions page was created for members of our Bond Steering Committee to aid in answering questions pertaining to the upcoming bond election. More information can also be found on our website at www.celinaisd.com and will be updated frequently as we approach election day. If you are not registered to vote, you have until Thursday, April 4th to register to participate in the upcoming election. Early voting will be held from Monday, April 22nd through Tuesday, April 30th and will be located at the Celina ISD Administration Building, located at 205 S. Colorado Street. FAQS FOR STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS WHAT IS A BOND ELECTION? A bond election authorizes a school district to issue debt to pay for building new facilities, renovations of existing facilities and large infrastructure upgrades. WHY NOW? Increasing student enrollment is the driving factor in the planning timeline. Based on a 2018 demographic report, Celina ISD’s student population is expected to double in 5 years, and double again in another 5 years. WHAT PROJECTS ARE PROPOSED? • New elementary schools • New middle schools • Additions and renovations to Celina High School • Land purchases • District-wide improvements HOW LONG WILL THIS BOND SERVE THE DISTRICT? The proposed plan is intended to accommodate CISD’s student enrollment growth for the next 10 years. WHAT IS THE ESTIMATED COST? $600 million. The District relied on a third-party to estimate costs based on recent, similar projects in nearby school districts. An inflation factor was included as well as soft costs, furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
WHAT WAS THE BOND PLANNING PROCESS? Oct 2016: Strategic Planning began Jan 2017: Stategic Plan approved Fall 2017: 10-Year Facility Planning began Jan 2018: 10-Year Facility Plan approved Fall 2018: Bond Steering Committee formed Jan 2019: Bond Steering Committee recommended a May 2019 bond HOW MUCH WILL THIS COST HOMEOWNERS? The proposed bond will not increase the District’s tax rate. Celina ISD has had the same total tax rate of $1.64 since the 2010-11 school year. HOW CAN THE DISTRICT FUND NEW FACILITIES WITHOUT RAISING THE TAX RATE? Because of growth. As new homeowners move into the District, they contribute to the taxbase. During the 2018-19 fiscal year, CISD’s taxbase grew 17.53%.

COMPOST WASTE, SAVE SPACE | And Make the World a Better Place | By Kaylea Hastings
What Can be Composted?
• vegetable and fruit scraps
• newspaper/paper
• paper towel/toilet paper rolls
• much, much more!
How Does Composting Help? Instead of throwing away organic waste, and taking up room in landfills, composting is a natural way to decompose organic waste and use the fertilizer it produces.
Our Personal Experience Composting is super simple once a bin is set up! The bin sits right in the backyard and all we have to do is dump scraps and waste in it and flip it a couple times a week. No odor either! We would love to give a special Thanks to Katie at Kroger Market in Prosper, TX for donating their left over produce as well! It has helped with our research and shown us different angles of food waste.
As the date progressively approached for our big project, we were still blank on what to do. The Environmental Ambassador event at the FCCLA STAR competition was starting to sound a little intimidating because ideas were not flowing but were due soon. Then one day, it just appeared…composting. Neither of us knew much about composting, but after some research we knew it was the perfect thing to do for the environment. We shared our idea and got many compliments, confused looks, and questions. We quickly realized, like us, people did not know about composting and how great it is for everyday people, gardeners, and environmental ambassadors! We decided for our project we would build our own compost bin, conduct research about food waste, and spread the word of composting to the community. Throughout the project we have come across many shocking statistics. Like, 24% of U.S. waste is organic material that can be composted! That’s almost a quarter of landfill space that could be saved! After more eyeopening research, we just knew that we should convince the community to start small scale compost bins at home. So…
What is Composting? Composting is taking organic waste materials and keeping them in a bin to decompose with help from turning and form a rich, fertile soil. This soil, sometimes referred to as “black gold”, is perfect to take into any type of garden or field. It keeps this great resource out of landfills!
Outdoor Composting! Outdoor daily/weekly- this requires daily or weekly turning of the compost bin that can sit in any backyard. There are many different designs that can be found online for simple or homemade bins!

Justin Steiner CELINA Magazine would like to congratulate Celina’s Person of the Year… Justin Steiner!! Justin was anonymously nominated for this honor with these words: “There are so many great things about Justin and what he’s done for Celina. He is currently the Chairman of the Board for the Celina Chamber of Commerce and has a passion for the growth of Downtown Celina. He has even gone so far as to open a mortgage branch on the Square. He is supportive of all of the businesses in our city and lives his life by the Golden rule…he treats everyone the way he wants to be treated. He is a family man who loves his family and loves his town.” CELINA Magazine: What is your favorite thing about Celina? Justin: I love Celina’s history and values. CELINA Magazine: How long have you lived here? Justin: A little over four years. CELINA Magazine: Tell us the readers a little bit about yourself and your family.
12 | February 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
Justin: I have been married to my best friend Alyson for over 16 years. We have two incredible identical eight-year-old twin boys, William and Jackson. When I am not working as a residential loan officer and manager at Legacy Mutual Mortgage – The Steiner Team, I like to create things, whether it is a drawing or painting, an airplane out of card board boxes, or my latest projects, a Titanic bed for Jack and a space shuttle bed for William. In the evenings, after my boys go to bed, I like to spend my down time by watching a movie with Alyson or by reading a book. I also love music. Each Sunday you can find me singing bass in the choir at First United Methodist. CELINA Magazine: What is your vision for Celina? Justin: My vision for Celina is to never lose what has defined Celina for years - our culture and values. Everyone knows that Celina is growing… it is inevitable. Just because Celina is changing doesn’t mean our timehonored core values have to. CELINA Magazine: Who are you when nobody is looking? Justin: What you see is what you get…just ask my wife, Alyson.

CELINA Magazine: How do you feel like you make a difference in our community? Justin: By serving and being involved. Because I care so much about this community and our values, I recently announced that I am running for Celina City Council Place 1 for the election being held on May 4. I currently serve on the Celina Chamber of Commerce Board, the Economic Development Corporation Board, and the Park and Recreation Board. My family is also very involved in the Celina Scouting Program, where I serve as the Celina Boys Scouts Charter Organization Representative. I learned from my parents and grandpa what it means to be a servant leader. This means putting others before yourself. This is who I strive to be. If I make a good and impactful difference in the life of one person, I consider that a win.

Growing CELINA
Pruning your Flowering Trees and Shrubs
Trees and Shrubs to Prune in Early Spring, While Dormant
Trees and Shrubs to Prune in Late Spring/ Summer, After Bloom
Bradford Pear (Pyrus calleryana)
Azalea (Rhododendron species)
When you can’t wait to get started in the spring garden, a good task to undertake is pruning. Most trees and shrubs benefit from annual pruning. It keeps them in shape, gets rid of dead and diseased wood and encourages new growth. But not all trees and shrubs should be pruned early, especially some of the flowering ones.
Butterfly Bush (Buddleia Davidii)
Beautybush (Kolkwitzia amabilis)
Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica)
Bridal Wreath Spirea (Spirea x vanhouttei)
Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida)
Flowering Crabapple (Malus species and cultivars)
Early spring bloomers set their flower buds the fall before. Pruning them early in the spring would mean losing some blossoms and is one of the most common answers to “Why don’t my plants bloom?” Most of the time this is not what you want. However, there are exceptions. It’s often easier to prune when you can see the shape of the plant, before the branches are masked by leaves. Trees and shrubs that are in need of a good shaping could sacrifice a few blooms to be invigorated by a spring pruning. There are no hard and fast rules, but here is a of list of commonly grown spring flowering trees and shrubs and the best time to prune them.
Flowering Plum (Prunus blireana) Glossy Abelia (Abelia x grandiflora) Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata) Honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissiam)
Forsythia (forsythia x intermedia) Hawthorn (Crataegus species and cultivars) Hydrangea, Bigleaf (Hydrangea macrophylla) Lilac (Syringa vulgaris)
Hydrangea, Peegee (Hydrangea paniculata ‘Grandiflora’)
Magnolia (Magnolia species and cultivars)
Potentilla (Potentilla fruticosa)
Mockorange (Philadelphus coronarius)
Redbud (Cercis canadensis)
Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia)
Spirea (except Bridal Wreath) (Spirea japonica))
Rhododendron (Rhododendron species)
Wisteria (Wistera species)
Serviceberry (Amelanchier x grandiflora) Slender Deutzia (deutzia gracilis) Weigela (Weigela florida)

Question: Jimmie, when is the best time of year to trim evergreen shrubs like Holly’s? Thank you for your answer. Drew D. in Celina. Answer: Hi Drew! In general, prune needlebearing evergreen shrubs in early spring, toward the end of dormancy and prior to emergence of new growth. Pruning evergreen shrubs at this time allows plenty of time for new growth to emerge, as well as plenty of time for these new shoots to harden off before the following winter. But you’ll often wish to treat broadleaf evergreen shrubs (and some needle-bearing varieties) differently. While, technically speaking, you may treat broadleaf evergreen shrubs in the manner described above, there are often reasons not to treat them as you would needle-bearing evergreen shrubs. For instance, if they are flowering shrubs, you’ll want to wait until after the flowering period to prune. Otherwise, you’ll miss that year’s blooms. Moreover, for evergreen shrubs (whether broadleaf or needle-bearing) that comprise hedges, you may want to prune after their new growth has emerged in spring. It is, after all, mainly the new growth that affords opportunity for shaping (assuming, of course, that you’ve been maintaining the hedge all along). Among needle-bearing evergreen shrubs Holly is a popular choice for hedges, because it’s amenable to pruning. Question: Jimmie, we have recently purchased a home and we now realize we have a problem… every time it rains really hard our back patio floods! It is our first home and I trust someone like you to give us an honest opinion! Sending you pictures so you can get a better feel for what I am describing. I read all your columns and have learned so much! Kristen K. in Celina.

Answer: Hi Kristen, thanks for the kind words! I did receive your pictures, thank you for sending! From the looks of it, you unfortunately have a backyard that slopes towards your back patio. Don’t panic! We see this all the time and there is a great fix! You will have to excavate all the area around your patio and install a subsurface drainage system that will capture all that water and move it to a more desirable location. The process can be labor intensive but done correctly will be very effective! You know how to reach us if you guys need a hand! Until next time...Happy Gardening!!
