CISD News
From the Desk of Mr. Rick DeMasters Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools In a few weeks, our Celina ISD families will be receiving an orange and white postcard in the mail that contains information regarding the 2nd Annual CISD Registration Fair that will be held on Thursday August 3, 2017 at the Celina High School campus. Last year’s fair was such a success and have appreciated the comments received regarding the event. Our staff has been working diligently over the past few months reviewing these comments regarding what worked and what didn’t and how to streamline the process in order to help our families and students transition back to school as smoothly as possible. The fair is open to new and returning students for All CISD campuses. If you have students on multiple campuses, you will be able to register all of your children at the fair. The fair will be held on the Celina High School campus from 8:00am-12:00pm and again from 3:00pm- 7:00pm. Doors will be closed from 12:00pm-3:00pm for lunch and to take care of any issues that may arise during the morning session. Entrance to the fair will again be on the East side of the campus, (football field side) instead of through the front entrance. Due to the construction projects currently taking place at the high school, directional signs will be posted to the designated parking areas for the fair. Spanish translation will also be provided for our Non-English speaking families. If translation services are needed, please contact Olivia Vest, CISD Director of Bilingual and ESL Education for more information. The CISD Registration Fair will again be set up in “Stations,” which have been streamlined in hopes that the process will be as pain free as possible. The stations are listed below and
8
CelinaMagazine.com | July 2017
include the information that you will need to provide in order to register your family members. Station 1 Proof of Residency - If you are registering a student, you will need to provide a photo ID and your proof of residency at Station 1. The district will accept a current copy of a utility bill, and/or lease agreement that states your legal name and address within CISD boundaries as proof of residency. If you are in the process of building a home, you must have documents that state that the completion of your home will be prior to the end of the first semester. Assistant Superintendent Mr. John Mathews will be available to answer any questions you may have regarding your proof of residency. As areminder, proof of residency is required from all returning and new students each year. Also, all students must be accompanied by a parent and/or legal guardian in order toregister. Once you have provided the documents needed, a copy of your proof of residency will be attached to the CISD Check-Off form, which will be initialed and allows you to proceed to the next station. Station 2 Survey Information - The district is required each year to collect surveys from our parents related to local and federal programs. You will be given the survey packet to complete prior to leaving the fair. Cafeteria tables will be available for you to complete the surveys. The completed packet will be collected at Station 9 and your Check-Off form will be turned in.
Station 3 Food Services -
The Food Services Department will provide personnel to answer any questions you may have concerning the school lunch program, and associated costs. Free and/or reduced
lunch applications will also be available to those that qualify. Our parents are able to pay for school lunches, club dues, and spirit wear through the “myschoolbucks” program. Information about the program will be included in your packet. If you still have questions concerning the program, you are welcome to speak with the food service department representatives.
Station 4 Transportation - Representatives
from the CISD Transportation Department will be available to speak with you regarding bus routes to include confirmation of what bus your child will ride and approximate times and locations for pickup and drop-off within your subdivisions.
counselors and front office personnel from each of our campuses will be on hand to visit and answer any questions you may have regarding campus procedures. Forms and information specific to each campus will be given to you at the time of check-out.
Station 10 - Let The Fun Begin!!!!! Representatives will be here to help you get involved from the
start. Bobcat Moms, C.A.R.E, PTA, and Quarterback Club representatives will provide information on membership, activities, volunteer opportunities, fundraising, and much more. We value and appreciate the support that these organizations provide to our students and campuses, but in order for them to be successful, they must rely on existing and new members to help carry on the traditionsthat make our district unique. Take a moment to meet and educate yourself on what these great organizations do and how you can get involved! We look forward to meeting our new families and welcoming back those that have been with us. It’s a great time to be a Bobcat and we cannot wait to share the excitement with all of you! See you on August 3rd!
Station 5 Email -
The district uses several communication methods in order to contact our parents and students. It is vitally important that we have current email addresses for all of our CISD families. If you do not have an email account, CISD representatives will be available to help you set up an account. All parent/legal guardians must have anemail account in order to access Parent Portal.
Station 6 Medical Information - CISD School

Big Changes In Store For Frontier Parkway By Joyce Godwin
The border separating Celina and Prosper is destined for a new look now that Celina, Prosper and Collin County have agreed on the funding. It’s been years in the making. The need is more and more prevalent as populations increase in numbers, and the amount of traffic on Frontier Parkway increases. Last week, the final piece fell into place when the Collin County Commissioners Court approved an additional $2.4 million to help fund an overpass which will eventually end the countless hours spent waiting for the BNSF rail cars to pass. The agenda item called for “Additional funding for the design and construction of Frontier Parkway from the DNT to SH289 (Bond Project No. 07-014) Engineering.” It was introduced and summarized for commissioners saying the county staff has been working with the cities to try to get a consensus. The two cities agreed to paying a third of the additional funding, each in their own Council meetings; first Prosper and then Celina. The county staff will come back to the Commissioners Court with a budget amendment to cover this proposed action and the formal agreements with the two cities to allow the county to get moving on the project, a staff member stated in the meeting acknowledging the project has been held up for a long time. “The money is readily available from the $29 million that has been available from a couple of years ago.” That $29 million was set aside from a bond election and after this expense from the county court, there should be five to seven million remaining. “Does Celina have any money in the project at all?” County Judge Keith Self asked of the presenting staff member. The answer came that this money will be Celina’s participation. Commissioner Susan Fletcher made the motion to move forward in funding the $2.4 million. It was seconded by Commissioner Duncan Webb and passed 4-0. Anyone interested in viewing the video of the Commissioners Court may do so on line at http://bit.ly/2rVv7zp. Celina Mayor Sean Terry, Prosper Mayor Ray Smith and Prosper Town Manager Harlan Jefferson were in the gallery for the commissioners’ ruling. “Usually when two cities share a road everything is split half and half,” Terry said. “What has been unusual about this situation is Prosper’s side is all public property belonging to the school district and the town of Prosper. On our side it’s single-family homes and commercial properties.” Terry explained that at first when the agreement was reached to widen Frontier Parkway, the two towns agreed to not have an overpass, but then Prosper’s needs changed and an overpass is what they wanted. He said it has taken this long to get property owners on the Celina side to support the bridge because they feared it would take away their easy access. “You want to be fiscally responsible for the citizens so you don’t want to over build and you don’t want to under build,” Terry said. “We were trying to protect our homeowners’ access to their property.” Traffic flow is something to which both Councils and the Commissioners are paying close attention. There are highways and wide roadways running north and south such as U.S. Highway 75 and Preston Road to name a couple of examples. But Terry points out that it still takes long periods of time to travel east or west. “Transportation is a huge deal,” he said. “We try to stay ahead a much as we can pushing TxDot and North Texas Transit Authority as much as we can to take care of transportation needs.” Terry said the Limited Access Roadways are needed to allow residents to get around the area. He talked about regional partnerships and how well the Collin County mayors like Prosper’s Mayor Smith, Frisco’s Mayor Jeff Cheney and McKinney’s Mayor George Fuller work together. He said it’s important to stay focused on transportation and infrastructure and now it’s a struggle just keeping up with the growth. Also known as Farm to Market 1461, the road that connects Dallas Parkway and Preston Road is only two lanes. Right now, Smith says, in addition to the overpass the plan is to make Frontier Parkway four lanes.

SCRUMS THE WORD By: Renee Marler
Local Rugby Club Invited to Play in National Championship
Rugby is a sport that began in the early 1800s in Britain and has grown into a sport played by and watched by tens of millions around the world, especially during the Six Nations Championship. Rugby is often compared to football, but Rugby fans will quickly point out that Rugby was first. Rugby is played with an oval ball larger than an American football with either 7 a-side or 15 a-side (team) depending on the game being played. The object is to score a try by placing the ball on the ground behind the try line at the ends of the rugby pitch. The ball cannot be passed forward, only laterally or backwards, making it essentially a game of running and evading tackles. The most marked difference between the two is that football stops when someone is tackled, but in rugby this is where the game gets the most exciting! When a rugby player is tackled, there is a set of actions that occur that require skill, strength, endurance, and strategy. When a tackle happens you’ll see people jumping up in the stands for a better look at who wins the ruck and takes possession of the ball. Rugby also involves scrums, where 3 or 8 players from each side bind together to form a tightly-knit pack. The two packs interlock and push on each other to try to win the ball being thrown into the middle. Many liken this to big horned sheep smashing into each other like a National Geographic special, but the scrum is a highly organized battle of people in very specific roles working together to win the ball for their team. The North Texas Barbarians got their start in 2012 when Celina residents Mark Kissinger and Jim Loggins envisioned bringing the sport to the area. “Jim and I played rugby together for Denton Rugby Club. When my oldest son started pee wee football in 2nd grade, I volunteered to coach. Lo and behold, Jim was out there as well with his son,
12
CelinaMagazine.com | July 2017
and we decided that sometime in the future, we would start a rugby team in Celina,” said Kissinger. They put together a small team of 9 players. In the five years since it began, North Texas Barbarians Rugby has grown to more than 80 players and a dozen certified coaches. The ages range from Kindergarten all the way through 8th grade and continue to grow, with the 2018 season being the inaugural season to include Barbarians High School teams. The Barbarians have both boys and girls teams. The girls’ teams are ramping up, with the help of head coach Rachel Ford. Ford grew up playing rugby in Canada and was hesitant on coaching a new team because she had so much respect for the sport. “Honestly, Mark had so much passion and had done the heavy lifting, so to speak, so I knew I wanted to be a part of this,” said Ford. 2017 was the first year the Barbarians were able to field a girls-only team. They played a terrific first season, even beating their toughest competition. In 2018 the girls’ teams will be expanding to include at least a middle school team, and a high school team. The coaches have a vision to build elite-level players as women’s rugby scholarships are currently available at 24 Division I and II universities in the US, and this number is growing each year. Kissinger and Ford, along with the assistant coaches are all Level 200 certified, meaning they have gone through rigorous face-to-face training with Rugby Texas and passed the testing necessary to be qualified by professionals in the sport. Coaches are additionally tested in their concussion awareness and safe sport training and are deeply committed to the sport of rugby, and to growing players from the North Texas area in this sport. If you ever had doubt that rugby is a safe sport, look at how many football teams are shifting to a rugby tackle to reduce concussions and extremity injuries to their players. Seattle Seahawks coach, Pete Carroll, produced a video in 2014 using the rugby tackle and it has been incorporated into many collegiate and professional teams as the safer and more effective way to tackle.
More than anything, the members of the North Texas Barbarians say rugby is a family. Since rugby is growing so much in Texas, the Barbarians have the opportunity to travel regularly to play other teams in friendlies and tournaments. The season typically starts as football ends, running from January to June and provides many opportunities to play locally as well. In the 2017 season the Barbarians played multiple times in Plano and Celina, as well as traveled to College Station, San Antonio, Austin, Shreveport, Louisiana, and Oklahoma for tournaments. Both the boys and girls Barbarian teams were invited to the Middle School Rugby National Invitational Tournament which was held June 24 - 25 in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Out of approximately 500 teams in the country, 12 boys teams were invited to play in the 4 game series. And only 3 girls teams were invited out of over 200 teams nationwide to compete in the seven game series. The boys placed 5th in the championship, and the girls 3rd. “This game draws strangers together from various walks of life under a common link of rugby,” says Kissinger. The teams often times eat meals with the teams they play to strengthen friendships, and to ensure good sportsmanship and camaraderie remain paramount in the players’ lives. Kissinger says, “The thing I love most about rugby is watching a new player learn a skill, gain confidence, and use it in a game. It’s so great to see the things that these players have worked on in practice bring them success in the game environment.” It is said in rugby the spectator may pay for the whole seat but will only need the edge and we encourage you to watch the North Texas Barbarians play and see what they mean.
If you would like to know more, you can follow the North Texas Barbarians on Facebook and Twitter at: Facebook: North Texas Barbarians Rugby Twitter: @NTBarbarians

Grace Baptist Fellowship welcomes new pastor, Jordan Johnson By Renny Gehman
There’s excitement up on the hill west of town where Grace Baptist Fellowship welcomed new teaching pastor, Jordan Johnson, on May 28. While Pastor Jordan is new to Celina, he’s not new to our area. He and his two older sisters grew up just up the road in Collinsville, where his parents still live, and he graduated from Collinsville High School in 2004.
Jordan served as Pastor of Harvey Street Baptist Church in Gainesville for the last 11 years and, in his words, “saw the Lord do some amazing things.” He describes his vision for GBF with that same excitement: “All we do is about making more of us, that is, disciples! This is such an amazing area. We will seek to engage Celina and the surrounding area by ‘incarnationally’ loving them with the goal of sharing God’s gospel with them. We want to be involved in the life of the city as we seek the welfare of it (Jeremiah 29:7).” Living in Collinsville gave him a great appreciation for small-town living, the friendly people and a tight-knit community, but also an understanding of the challenges ahead as Celina grows. Pastor Jordan describes his call into the ministry as being “at a crossroads in my life” and it was through fasting that he understood God’s call. His original plan was to serve in youth ministry “but it became increasingly clear that the Lord was calling me into pastoral ministry. At that point, I felt so unqualified…and said, ‘Lord I can’t pastor, I have nothing to offer, I have no education and know nothing about leading a body of believers.’” But Jordan says he spent time seeking God’s face,
18
CelinaMagazine.com | July 2017
and He took “my will and subjugated it to His and through this He broke my heart for His church.” That time of searching helped Jordan realize how excited he was to be used by the Lord to shepherd His church. Jordan received a B.A. in Bible with a minor in pastoral ministry at Criswell College in Dallas, and credits much of who he is today to being faithfully taught the Scriptures by Criswell’s great professors and preachers. He is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity from Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon. Moving to Celina is just one of the new challenges in Pastor Jordan’s life. He and his wife of seven years, Ember, are also new parents. Daughter Eden was born just three months ago, and Jordan says that they both are thankful to the Lord for all the joy she has brought into their lives. They look forward to watching Eden grow up in a great community like Celina. While their
lives undergo all the changes associated with moving, parenthood and pastoring a new church, Jordan credits Ember with being his biggest supporter and encourager. They share a passion for reading, memorizing, meditating on and living out God’s Word, and after Jesus, Ember is the number one passion in Jordan’s life. Another passion is preaching what he consistently refers to as “God’s glorious gospel” and shepherding His people. But his greatest joy and delight is walking with God’s people as they mature together into acting, thinking and looking more like Jesus. Jordan confesses that both he and Ember see Jesus as their hero, and that the Great Shepherd of John 10 is the standard by which he measures his own shepherding. His ambition? “To finish the race the Lord has set before me and, when I stand before Him, hear ‘well done.’” Jordan believes that the Bible text should drive each sermon. He sees the preacher as playing the role of prophet, not to communicate any “new” or “hidden” truth but, by seeking to deliver God’s word concisely through prayer and careful study, to see His word transform lives. Therefore Jordan’s pattern is to teach through books of the Bible, always asking God to re-reveal what He revealed thousands of years ago, while at the same time depending on His Spirit to illuminate the text and bring it to life as God’s people seek to apply it to theirs. Pastor Jordan and the congregation of Grace Baptist Fellowship invite everyone to join them at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday mornings and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday evenings for corporate worship, or Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. for dinner and corporate prayer. The church also meets for Bible study on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. Individuals may check out their website at www.gracebaptistcelina. org and Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ GraceBaptistFellowshipCelina. Otherwise, please visit GBF at 15062 W. FM 455, Celina or contact them at P.O. Box 1404, Celina, Phone is (972) 382-4482 and email is gbfcelina@sbcglobal.net.

Gorillas On The Square By Renee Marler
If you’ve driven through the square in Celina, you’ve noticed the sweet business with the funny name. “My son, Deacon, came up with the name for the business,” said owner Betsy Boudreaux. Hairy Gorillas Snowballs offers more than fifty different flavors that can be mixed to create thousands of unique combinations. Monty Dean, who was visiting from Arkansas, created a very unique flavor combination. “I call it the ‘Uncle Monkey’ and it has Spearmint, cream, chocolate syrup, ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sprinkles,” said Dean. But not everyone is as experimental as Dean. “Our most popular flavors are probably blue raspberry and tigers blood,” says Boudreaux. Boudreaux said she and her husband moved the family to Celina a year and one-half ago to help with the new Movement Church, but they wanted a local family business as well. “We also wanted to do something as a family, something that would teach them how business works while being a part of the community,” said Boudreaux. “We loved the idea of the snowball stand, so we just rolled with it.” For Deacon, he likes working at the stand with his family. “I get paid in snowballs. I get one per shift so that’s pretty cool,” says Deacon. Hairy Gorillas is open six days a week, only closing on Sundays. The summer hours are Monday – Thursday from 1:00 P.M. to 8L00 P.M, and Friday and Saturdays they are open until 9:00 P.M.
