July. It’s the month that summer was made for and if you’ve spent any time outdoors in the past few weeks, it seems to be the month the sun was made for, too. Sure, we’ve had a few storms here and there, but for the most part, the summer months have brought with them bright blue skies. We hope that everyone has had a chance to catch their breath after an eventful spring semester of graduations, end of school year celebrations and activities. It’s nice to sit outside and reflect on another successful school year gone by. It is during these summer months that we are in a state of remembrance and yet also anticipation. It is this nostalgia and excitement that makes July one of our favorite months of the year. July has always been a sentimental time for our family. Probably because it is a sentimental time for our country as well. Few people know this, but because of our love of friends, family and country, we started a little celebration a few years ago that you may have heard of. We wanted to provide an opportunity for our community to celebrate, to come together as brothers, sisters, parents, business owners and ultimately Americans to show appreciation for one another and for the country that is, and will always be, the greatest country on Earth. We have come so far since we, as a young couple, had the idea to start a media company in our living room and because of that, we’ve learned that with passion and hard work even the smallest dreams and ideas can evolve into really BIG realities. We’re very proud, and yet also very humbled, to say that in 5 short years one of those dreams has grown to be one of the largest and most anticipated Independence Day celebrations in the state of Texas. It doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated that it would not be possible without our friends like you. That’s right! On July 3rd, our little family owned business will host and sponsor the 5th Annual Pride in The Sky Celebration at Frontier Park in Prosper, Texas. You are invited! We hope that you too, as our brothers, sisters, business owners and ultimately Americans, will trade your green and orange in (just for the day) for red, white and blue to celebrate America’s birthday and show honor and remembrance to those who made it so, all for the sake of community. We appreciate your friendship and hope to see you there! Celina Proud,

JULY

CELINA GLASS & MIRROR

Roy and Stephanie Kirby opened Celina Glass and Mirror in September of 2007 and haven’t looked back. At age 16, Roy’s first job was working in the warehouse of a glass company where his mother was employed. Aside from serving eight years in the military, working in the glass industry is all that he has known.

Roy, each customer works directly with the actual business owners throughout the entire process.

Stephanie’s career included working in the mortgage banking business, organizing non-profit offices and serving on volunteer groups. They have two grown sons and an adopted special-needs son.

Whether your needs are that of a small piece of picture frame glass or an entire home window replacement, Celina Glass and Mirror can accommodate all your residential needs. Celina Glass and Mirror offer military law enforcement and first responder discounts on top of their already competitive pricing. They are members of the Celina Chamber of Commerce and have an A+ rating on Angie’s List.

With Roy’s 30 years of experience in glass and Stephanie’s 20 years of office experience, the two decided to take a leap of faith, leave Plano and start their own company. They wanted to move and open their business somewhere with a small-town feel that also had the potential for growth. For months they looked at many cities around the Collin County area but believed that God, very clearly, led them to Celina.

Stephanie says, “The past 11 years have been an amazing journey and we have met so many wonderful people along the way. This community welcomed us with open arms. The owners of other small businesses in town encouraged us, mentored us and helped get Celina Glass and Mirror off the ground.” Roy and Stephanie feel so blessed to be a part of Celina and are working hard to keep up with the rapid growth in the area while making certain they stick to their company motto of providing unparalleled customer service. From your first phone inquiry with Stephanie, through the completion of your glass installation with

The Kirby’s are proud members of First United Methodist Church in Celina and enjoy taking part in church activities that serve the community. They are also proud to be glass and mirror contributors to the homes built by Habitat for Humanity. Roy and Stephanie would like to thank their customers and contractors for their referrals and continued business as they strive to make each new client a friend and lifelong customer. Please call them anytime for a free estimate. For additional information, visit CelinaGlassAndMirror.com or follow them on Facebook.

American Legion Post 145…Going Above and Beyond for Brothers and Sisters By Jodie Brownd

f you’ve never stepped inside of an American Legion meeting, you might be overwhelmed by the smiling and friendly faces of men and women of all ages. Aside from their friendliness, they all have two things in common. They each have fought for our country and they all deserve a thank you, for having done so.

The American Legion Post 145 is doing great things in our community and the veterans that populate it. They have recently started hosting monthly meetings, which provide a social opportunity for veterans and their families and serves as a resource for them to receive and provide support to fellow veterans. Butch Wilson, the Finance Officer of the newly established 145th Post, insists there was a chapter set in place in the 1940’s. Celina has a rich military history that is apparent if you’ve had the opportunity to visit the memorial in our beloved square. But for some reason, the group stopped meeting throughout the years and its absence has sparked a new passion for many of our citizens to support its re-establishment. That re-establishment is well on its way thanks to red, white and blue-blooded veterans like Post Leader and Founder Mike Terry, Post Commander Mike Mortenson, Jeff “Squirrel” Redman, Butch Wilson and World War 2 Veteran Robert Anderson. They’re passionate about issues such as the high suicide rate of veterans. Butch states that, “Twenty-two veterans commit suicide every day in the United States.” That number is proof that the need for organizations like the American Legion and Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, a nonprofit that raises money to help veterans and veteran organizations is at an all-time high. Their motto is "Vets Helping Vets" says member Jeff Redman. Who better, in addition to the citizens that benefit from their freedom, to help veterans in need, then those veterans that have fought alongside their brothers and sisters for the better good of our country? As if providing resources and reaching out to meet the needs of other veterans isn’t enough, the American Legion also supports, encourages and invests in the future by way of our youth, providing life changing opportunities that few have the privilege to experience. Upcoming Celina High School Seniors Branden Pierce and Timothy Green know a bit about that. The two were recently selected to attend Boys State at the University of Texas, Austin from June 10th through the 15th. American Legion Boys State is one of the most respected and highly sought after educational programs of government instruction for High School students in the Nation. It is a participatory program that enables students to become part of the “hands on” operation of local, county and state government. At Boys State, Branden and Timothy had the opportunity to learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. The training centers on the structure of all levels of government and are operated by students elected to various offices with specific agendas. Timothy had the opportunity to create a bill that would restrict information regarding public shootings, while Branden’s group learned about actual campaigning with a special focus on education reform. Both young men spoke of how the experience was life changing and how it empowered and encouraged them to go out and change the world. Celina’s Legion Post 145 sponsored the young men that were chosen by Celina High School Administrators due to their academic successes. Both young men would like to thank The American Legion for their generosity and support. They are grateful for the life-long friendships made, the opportunity to represent Celina and for the veterans that contributed to this once in a lifetime experience. It’s easy to see that good works are in the forecast for Celina, Texas. Whether you are a veteran, a family member of a veteran or a student that has exceeded expectations and deserves recognition, the men and women of the American Legion have made a difference in the lives of all Americans by fighting for our freedoms and continue to do so. You need only visit the Veteran’s Memorial on the Square to see the names of citizens that paid the ultimate price. It’s nice to know that serving your country means more than going to war. It means doing the right thing for good citizens day in and day out… before, during and after…and giving back to the youth that will someday follow in their footsteps as leaders. And that is something worth writing, reading and talking about. If you or someone you know would like to attend an American Legion Post 145, please contact Butch Wilson at: wilsonwendell@sbcglobal.net and follow the Post 45 Facebook page at www. facebook.com/celinapost145. Let's Discuss Drip Irrigation! ltra-efficient and easy to install, drip irrigation systems are ideal for watering pots, beds and trees. The main goal of any irrigation system is to put water on plants‌period. How much water is distributed and how efficiently the system runs are the important details to consider. There are many techniques for distributing water, including crop irrigation, pop-up spray systems commonly used to water lawns and drip irrigation.

U

Flood irrigation is often used in areas where water canals flow through the country, supplying fields and yards with water that is siphoned out of the canal. The water is then routed onto the desired area in large amounts, to be absorbed into the soil and to the root zone. This is a very effective method‌but is not as inefficient as it might seem. A typical pop-up spray irrigation system that has too much pressure, causing lots of mist and with poorly adjusted heads that throw water onto the sidewalks and into the streets, may actually be less efficient. Drip irrigation is on the other end of the spectrum. Water, at low pressure, is applied to relatively small areas so that evaporation losses from misting are eliminated, and flooding and runoff to undesired areas are removed. Drip irrigation, simply put, is a method of applying water directly to a target root zone in a controlled manner, limiting losses to evaporation and run-off. DIY kits for homeowners are available at most garden centers, hardware stores and irrigation supply stores starting at less than $100. These kits include everything needed to set up a simple drip system that hooks up to your hose bib connector: an antisiphon device, a number of fittings, nozzles, plus a given amount of pipe (depending on the intended application). Simple and

easy to follow instructions help with installation, which can often be completed in one afternoon. Timers can also be added for ease of operation. Installing drip irrigation can be fairly simple or quite complex, depending on the area needing coverage. Small, stand alone systems designed simply to water patio pots, beds and trees are ideal for do-it-yourselfers. Larger systems, which are generally added to existing lawn systems, can be installed to water lawns, but these types of systems are best left to the professionals. Keep in mind that there are several state laws that govern potable community water systems and that it’s sometimes easier and less expensive to hire a professional. Texas requires that anyone servicing or installing irrigation systems for a fee be licensed by the state, and that all systems incorporate a backflow prevention device to protect drinking water from contamination by back siphoning. Before installing your drip irrigation system, check with your local water provider to determine exactly what type of safety requirements or preventive measures are necessary.

Did You Know??

Anytime a licensed irrigator comes out to your property and finds, during the course of service, that a system is noncompliant with state regulations, he must, by law, bring the system up to grade or disable it. If you have an old irrigation system, chances are that revisions will be required to bring your system up to code. Question: Jimmie, is it too late to cut back or prune my Wax Myrtle trees? We lost some limbs last winter and they are looking rather out of balance. If not, how is the best way? Pamela H. in Celina Answer: Hi Pamela! Now that the sap has come up through the trunk and the ornamental trees have foliage it’s a little late. Pruning on Wax Myrtle trees should be done when they are dormant (November thru late February). It’s possible, however, that if you have dead-looking branches or branches that have very little foliage left, then yes you can remove those carefully. You will also want to remove any other limbs opposite of those that help balance the canopy weightwise. Those are notorious for a weaker branch structure and breaking with snowfall or super high winds! The downside to pruning any tree once the sap is in the canopy is that insects will be drawn to the wound when sap leaks out after removal. So, consider a good pruning paint to seal the wound when you cut!

8 TIPS FOR ENJOYING A SUMMER FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT By: Rosh Ramanujam, Owner of Kiddie Academy of Prosper What’s summer without an outdoor movie night with the children? A summer movie night can be an affordable and accessible alternative to hitting the theater. An outdoor movie night helps families have a lot of fun, and quality time, without a lot of effort. At Kiddie Academy of Prosper, we spend a lot of time outdoors, especially during the summer, and we encourage families to extend that into the evenings and weekends. In this month’s article, I’m sharing helpful tips for enjoying a summer family movie night in your community. Know what time the movie starts. Come early and come prepared so your children can run around, connect with their friends and maybe even grab a bite to eat before sitting down and being quiet while the movie airs. Typically, the movie won’t start until it’s dark enough to see the screen. So, keep in mind if you arrive at 6:00pm, it could be a few hours for that to happen. Pick the right spot. Whether you’re in a back yard, on a patio or presented with an open field of spot choices, look for a spot that will provide the most comfort and least amount of distracting foot traffic. If you have a little one that is potty training, you might also consider a spot close to the bathroom. Every child has a different attention span. You’re guaranteed to be sitting down for at least 90 minutes while the film airs. This could be a nice time of relaxation with your older kids, but younger ones are bound to get antsy, want to walk around, find trouble or take a bathroom break. A 2-year old will not have the same attention span for a movie as a 7-year old. Don’t expect more attention from them than what they’re able to give at each age. Don’t forget the snacks, water, sunscreen and bug spray. If your outdoor movie venue doesn’t have snacks available, serve your own popcorn in individualized brown bag. Offer fruit-infused

water or juice boxes to keep children hydrated and cool in the summer heat, which can linger long after the sun goes down. Bring along some ice pops or another frozen treat for a special refresh before the movie starts. Plan for later bed times. Outdoor movie venues typically won’t start the film until the sun goes down, which could be as late as 9:00pm. in the summertime. Plan for children to have a lot of fun in the pre-screen time and be inclined to push back their bedtime until after the movie is over. Bring all your pillows and blankets. Laying in the grass isn’t as comfortable and bringing lawn chairs can be a hefty endeavor with your children along as well. Bring a couple of big blankets to lay on the ground with pillows to cuddle up in and watch the movie in comfort and style. You should still bring some entertainment. You’ll have some time to kill before the movie starts. Have some fun games, balls or toys to keep kids occupied. Prepare to be outside. Since you and your little ones will be outside enjoying this entertainment for a few hours, prepare for the bugs with insect repellent and sunscreen.
