hey’re here. Some are big, like the hail stones bouncing atop of our cars and some are subtle, like cool early mornings that turn abruptly into parching heated daylight. All the signs are here. We made it through another school year, raised up another crop of Seniors and it’s time, the time of year that we’ve all been waiting for, time for cut-offs, flip flops and family vacations. It seems that everywhere you look in Celina, there are people out enjoying the sunshine. With that sunshine comes community events, park gatherings, patio time on the square and the anticipation of holidays throughout the summer months like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and July the 4th. It seems that every time we turn around there is something to celebrate. Summertime is a time to celebrate what we’ve accomplished and endured throughout the school year, a time to reflect on the things in our lives that work and maybe some that don’t. June is a half year mark, much like that of New Year’s in terms of reflection where we look deeper and pay more attention by creating memories and hopefully surrounding ourselves with the people we love and most like to celebrate with. It is a time of shedding, both skin and clothes as we bear the heat and allow ourselves to breathe and be kissed by the sunshine.

Whether it’s poolside, by the lake, on a roller coaster or just sitting out by your sprinkler, June is a month mixed with relaxation, but also anticipation. With students out of school, we have an opportunity to catch our breath, remember and appreciate the simple moments of summers gone by and just be. There’s nothing better than the feeling of bringing to the light, the parts of ourselves that winter disguises. We’re all a little more exposed, a little more authentic.

Here at Cedarbrook Media, June is a month of planning. While we will get to enjoy the peaceful evenings and good times with our children were also anticipating and preparing. With July just around the corner, we’re excited to spend our favorite holiday, July 4th with our favorite people, the people of our community.

Jason and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to what has become a tradition here in North Texas, the Annual Pride in The Sky celebration. There’s no better time or way to celebrate our country than with opportunity as a community to look up into the sky if even for a moment and become one as Americans enjoying American traditions.

It’s a time where Bobcats and Eagles become brothers and sisters under the same sky lit up by enough fireworks that you can’t tell if it’s day or night. It’s a reminder that we’re all under the same sky, all fighting the same fight our forefathers fought, to live out the American dream. Whether you’re halfway up the tollway or on the other side of Gunter, you’ll be able to see it, the pride of all of us, for all of us to enjoy, together. We’re getting ready, and we look forward to enjoying that little piece of Summer with all of you. Celina Proud,

BOBCAT 101 From the Desk of Rick DeMasters
Congratulations to the Celina High School Graduating Class of 2018! You set your sights on greatness and through hard work and dedication to your goals, you are now entering into the next phase of your lives. Your ambitions will help carry you to achieve your dreams and we are excited to see where your future takes you. Saying goodbye is always difficult for our faculty and staff, but we must begin preparation for a new school year. My administrative team has been working on ways to better prepare our families for the start of the school year. It may seem like this is a lifetime away, but August will be here before we know it and there is a wealth of information that our parents need prior to the school year starting. With that said, “Bobcat 101” was born!
Our communication team worked with Celina Junior High Digital Production Teacher Lisa Smith and her students to create an online emagazine. The magazine will be available on our website and by hard copy during the month of June. It is our hope that this will be an annual magazine, filled with information for both current and new families to our district. With this being an inaugural year, we welcome your suggestions as to what should be added in the years to come. The magazine will highlight information that is pertinent to our students and parents as they make preparations for the start of the school year. Each of our campuses will have a dedicated page that will include a welcome letter from the campus principal and supply lists for each grade level. Secondary supply lists are handled differently and are available from the individual teachers during their first course meetings. Campus Hours of Operation are also posted, as well as a copy of the 20182019 CISD Calendar that will help our parents plan their future schedules to accommodate special events and closures already set for the following school year.

Our CISD Nursing Staff has included information regarding immunization requirements for all students. Immunizations must be current prior to schedule pickup and class attendance. If your child is needing to update their shot record, Passport Health personnel will be available to administer vaccines from 4:006:00 pm, during the CISD Registration Fair to be held on August 3rd, at Celina High School. You will also find important information regarding the CISD Registration Fair. The fair is open to all CISD students prekindergarten through twelfth grades. Please note the residency requirements for enrollment for CISD students. New for the 20182019 school year, Children’s TeleHealth will be available for our CISD families. This service uses computer and video technology to link your child at school to a doctor or nurse that can assess your child’s condition because we understand that it is not always convenient for parents to leave work, especially during months when viruses, colds and the flu are at their worst. Also, we are excited to welcome AlphaBest who will be offering premier afterschool care on our primary and elementary campuses. Representatives from Children’s TeleHealth and AlphaBest will be in attendance at the CISD Registration Fair to answer any questions you have on their services. With the creation of Bobcat 101, Celina ISD is committed to giving our families the information they need to prepare their children for the upcoming school year. We are extremely excited that this magazine not only showcases the talent that our students possess, but gives our parents communication tool that will help them better prepare for the future. Enjoy your summer break and we look forward to welcoming everyone back in August for another great school year! GO BOBCATS!

Celina’s Andrew Needum Presented the Lone Star Award By Jodie Brownd
In a press conference last month, Andrew Needum stood bravely in front of his community and co-workers while he reluctantly addressed the nation after what was a nightmare turned reality for he and his family. Returning from a family vacation aboard Southwest Airlines Flight 1380, Andrew was caught doing the right thing at the right time. When debris from an engine explosion flew through the window where 43-year-old Jennifer Riordan was sitting, Needum and fellow passenger Tim McGinty rushed to pull Riordan back inside of the plane. Despite performing CPR on Jennifer, a banking executive from New Mexico, she obtained fatal head injuries and did not survive. Since that time, Andrew has been in the news for his heroic acts. He and his wife were invited to the White House to meet the President and it seems the public cannot get enough of the young man, whose humility and bravery has won the hearts of people across the nation. Although the circumstances surrounding the original press conference are tragic, today there seemed to be a bit of a silver lining, if even for a minute, on what anyone would consider a dark cloud accompanying a difficult life experience. There was a reunion of sorts at the Fire Station in Celina on Friday, June 1st. Andrew Needum had a bit of a spark in his eye. His head was held a little higher than it was just weeks prior. His wife stood proudly, smiling by his side with their two children nested happily between the couple.

June 2018 WeAreCelina.com
I’m not sure Andrew Needum will ever be comfortable being called a hero, but today he was presented with the very honorable and prestigious Lone Star Award presented by Congressman John Ratcliffe. In three and a half years, there have only been seven recipients, including Needum, of the Lone Star Award, which recognizes ordinary people that are special for their own reasons, all having done extraordinary things. Congressman John Ratcliffe called the award special and unique as he recalled the first Lonestar award was presented to a couple that took in a homeless man, gave him medical attention, restored his sight and helped put his life back together. Another recipient, he said, was a small business owner committed to raising a million dollars to send fallen soldiers’ children to college. Needum was presented with a Lonestar Award Plaque and a United
Car ing for Clients and Community Thinking of listing your home? Call today to get started on your customized listing plan. States flag from Mr. Ratcliffe that has been proudly flown at the State Capital. He thanked Andrew for displaying the character it took to risk his own life to save someone else’s and Andrew in turn thanked his parents who were also on the flight for raising him to know what true character is. Andrew, as humble as ever, is a self-proclaimed man of few words when it comes to public speaking. He said, “Not a day goes by that the tragedy doesn’t weigh heavily on our hearts. It wasn’t just me on that plane, it was my family.” With one look across the fire station that morning towards his parents, wife and children, their cousins, aunts and uncles, all who were present today, you see the purity and blessings of a family that have turned a tragic life-altering experience into a reason to love each other a little better and hug each other a little tighter. The feeling carries over when you see his fellow Celina firefighters, their Chief, local police officers and friends with pride on their faces because he saved a little bit of all of us on that flight, just by being willing to do so.

Sometimes it takes a tragedy to wake up and appreciate what seems so easy to take for granted. Sometimes it takes darkness and uncertainty to better recognize the sunlight at the end of a storm. This tragedy will have its effect on everyone who hears the story and an even bigger impact on the families that experienced it. Andrew and his family won’t soon forget what they endured or the details of that day, but on June 1, 2018 he was given the Lonestar Award and with it brought a smile to his face, a twinkle back in his eye and a little bit of peace to everyone who witnessed it.

Protect and Serve: A Family Tradition By Jodie Brownd
There is a funny feeling you get when you sit down with a police officer to have a conversation and a piece of pie. You can't help but wonder what they’re thinking and if you make a sudden movement if they'll follow your lead. Do you make and maintain direct eye contact the entire conversation or do you look away occasionally, just out of respect? You ask yourself, what is the best way to distract from the fact that one time in 11th grade you ran from a party as one of their copolicemen pulled up to find order in what was a Friday night after football game get together? Albeit many moons ago, do they know? Is it written on my face? Do I confess my sins now or later? If you’re talking about Celina Police Department Officer Chris Bardwell, you tell him everything. Straight up. You tell him about that time you cried the first time you ever got a warning, the time you were pulled over in the carline at school while dropping your daughter off and about those times in your 1983 Camaro cruising the drag, music blaring, cringing when you saw red and blue lights flashing anywhere in the distance on Saturday night because you knew one of your classmates was going to have a story to tell on Monday morning. Yes, it's best to just be honest with him. He was honest when he spoke of his days as a teenager growing up in a small town close to Lake Texoma. There wasn't a tale that I could tell that he couldn't match or outdo with a hilarious story about what we think of and recall about police officers growing up. We talked Charlie’s Angels and Starski and Hutch, as Journey played in the background of Lucy's Café which by the way makes an incredible piece of coconut pie. He was also honest about the fact that because he works nights now, he had just come off of an interesting shift. The highlight of the night? Being spit on by a heavily intoxicated woman after having been cursed out and called every name in the book. She, in her drunken stupor was insulting him personally and professionally, I'll leave the exact adjectives used to your imagination. He was told to shut up between slurry expletives. "It's just part of the job," he laughs, as he makes it known that it was a mild night of protecting citizens. The irony that is so apparent to me is that, had that woman been pinned under a car or helplessly seeking
her child, he would have helped. He would have moved the moon and the stars to do whatever he could for her, or anyone, despite anyone's preconceived notions or ideas about who police officers are and what they do. We've all had them. It seems that police officers are often in the hot seat in the media, especially lately. If attention isn't being drawn to what could have been handled differently, in scenarios there's attention regarding fallen officers having been intentionally targeted for crimes. Why is it that policemen are the first to take harsh criticism and yet too, they're the first people we want on the scene of a crime or if something poses a danger to us or to our families. We beg the question as a society, do our actions justify the justice that we seek? That isn't a question police officers ask. They protect us anyway. In a world where the media can twist stories to the benefit of whomever is telling them, it is easy to see that in any case, in any industry and in any field, especially in a career that is in the public eye, one bad apple spoils the whole bunch. They're out there, it can't be denied, even Officer Bardwell will say it. He also says that there's nothing that makes police officers out there risking their lives daily more furious than an officer that doesn't respect his position or the position of other officers out there doing good work. The BEST kind of work out there if you've ever needed one. Let me tell you about police officers. Every single one I've ever met out in the world who wasn't on duty or without a shiny badge looks just like a regular guy. They don't talk or walk different, they don't wear mirrored aviator sunglasses or ride side by side on motorcycles eating donuts. They aren't hiding or scouting out around corners, just watching for you to make your next mistake. They're in grocery stores, on the square, playing ball in the park and at movie theaters doing what all of us as regular people do. They are brothers, sisters, mothers, daughters and like Chris Bardwell, they're Dad's.

He's the kind of Dad like most, that has a teenage daughter calling to ask for money or a ride to the mall. He's the kind of Dad who beams with pride when he talks about his son graduating from the Police Academy this month. This is the case for Chris'
Academy Director with Texoma Regional Police Academy in Denison, Texas that opened in 1972. Jerry has two brothers, Milton, the oldest, was a Marine and a State Trooper, and Hubert, who was named after their uncle who was killed in World War II, worked for the Collin County Sheriff's department. Uncle Hubert has two sons – Mike, who after his time in the U.S. Air Force was recently promoted from Captain to Battalion Chief at the Fire Department in Denton, and Dano, who also served in the Air Force and now works for the Frisco Police Department as a Detective. Dano says he was surrounded by older role models in his family. He admires how they held themselves to a higher standard, understanding that honesty and integrity are the keys to one’s character. They also showed him that being a part of something bigger than himself is worth more than anything money can buy.
son Brock, who is now on staff as a police officer himself at the McKinney Police Department. He's also the kind of Dad that every teenager should have the opportunity to have, as he has no problem waiting for his daughter Brianna in the school car line playing "Bad Boys", the theme song from the show Cops, full blast over the intercom of his police car just to subtly make her aware that he has arrived and encourage her to make her way to the car. He is a devoted husband to his wife Denise. He's funny, he's real and he's someone you'd want with you on the front lines. Chris remembers going to work with his Dad and watching police film down in the basement of Grayson College from an early age. He states that he had never considered any other field of work other than public safety or professional football…and since he wasn't drafted to the NFL, he jokes that the decision was easy. He gets his protective spirit and heart to serve, honestly. Chris' father Jerry Bardwell has an impressive history in law enforcement as well. After the Police Academy, he spent 4+ years with the Richardson and Plano Police Departments. Jerry then spent 36 more years serving as the first Police
One family, serving a total of over 171 years in combined police, fire and military is impressive, I don't care who you are. Chris still remembers a few of his Dad's stories and talks about how much times have changed through the years. He's seen a lot in his time fighting crime and has won many awards for saving lives. Chris offered 22.5 years of loyal and dedicated service with the City of Grand Prairie and is now happy to call the Celina Police Department his work home. Out of their uniforms, they're just like our fathers, brothers and uncles. Police officers have stories, lives, children at home and memories of what it was like to be young and maybe a little more carefree. If you think about it, maybe the next time you have the opportunity to speak with one, you could look them boldly in the eye and say, "Thank you" for doing the work that it takes a special breed of person to do. The Bardwell family genes and rich family history run back as far as World War II, when Great Uncle Hubert Wayne Bardwell fought and died protecting our country as a U.S. Marine on the island of Saipan on June 14, 1944. Another Great Uncle, Brainard Bardwell, also fought in World War II in the U.S. Navy. Needless to say, a Bardwell family reunion is in order and it would be one of the safest events held this side of the Red River.
the bearer of bad news in any situation. But if you recognize the selflessness and the acts of courage and even restraint from law enforcement daily, it's easier to put yourself in their shoes. At the end of the day, they're just trying to keep you and the people you hold dear, safe. Like the woman who encountered Officer Bardwell, we all have bad days. It's how we handle things that determine who we are. There is good in every person alive and thanks to three generations of Bardwell Officers, there is no denying that our little piece of the world is safer and will be for generations to come. We're grateful for that. On the Heels of National Police Week (May 13th-19th) Memorial Day (May 28th) and with Father's Day just around the corner on June 17th, we couldn't think of a better time to honor not only a family of heroes that have put their lives on the line for decades, but the dad's, uncles, husbands and brothers that they all represent. With a heritage and family tree so abundant with the fruits of their labor, these men and their bravery and desire to make the world a better place are to be celebrated. Happy Police Week, Memorial Day and Father's Day Chris Bardwell, to your family and brothers on the front lines, whether policemen, firemen or military for keeping the Bardwell family tradition alive. This article is dedicated to Hubert Wayne Bardwell I, who in WWII, just seconds before dying, handed his Browning automatic rifle to a buddy, John F. Burnett, and said, “Even if I can’t see this battle through, my rifle still can. Please carry it for me.” Little did he know; his gun wouldn’t be the only thing carried for him. Along with his death, a family tradition was carried too.

Spotlight - North Texas Custom Plumbing The year was 1997 in Celina, Texas. That was when John Carter had the idea to start a plumbing company. He was working with his mentor, Sam Fritz, in Frisco and was excelling as a plumber. Frisco was booming at the time with a population of 20,000 people. He learned a lot during this time of fast growth. At that time, Celina had a population of only 2,000 people. It was the perfect place to be. During the first few years, it was a hard road having to learn the ins and outs of running a company. His mission was always to put the customer first, because without the customer, the company is nothing. Growing up in a sports family and with his father, Pat Carter, Sr. being his coach, John was taught the work-hard attitude. Today, John runs his company like a coaching staff. He is the head coach, the office staff are his assisting coaches and the plumbers in the field are the captains. You need to have skilled plumbers with the knowledge to execute the jobs to be successful. John has always surrounded himself with great people, even early on in his company. North Texas Custom Plumbing has the best staff around. The office is run by John’s wife, Sherry Carter. She has an awesome team: Rebecca, Liz, Cariana, Marilyn and Candy. Together the office staff keeps all facets of North Texas Custom Plumbing running like a well-oiled machine. John uses a speech from Jason Garrett, of the Dallas Cowboys, many times. The speech talks about doing your job. It starts with the office staff taking the calls and executing the plumbers to the job, if one person is down then the next person will step up and provide the best possible customer service. “You do your job and trust everyone else to do their job. We are interdependent, we don’t work by ourselves, we rely on each other. Everyone at North Texas Custom Plumbing understands this. This is who we are. We depend on each other and it works.” Meet the Plumbers: Garrett, Michael, Gary, Nathan, Dylan, Cole, Abe and John Boston. These are the best men in the business, they are the reason North Texas Custom Plumbing gets recommended for many of the projects they do. North Texas Custom Plumbing is a partner with one of the largest Tankless water heater manufacturers in the U.S., Rinnai. Rinnai has a first-class reputation and is the company North Texas Custom Plumbing speaks about having great integrity that represents North Texas custom Plumbing. They have been a partner with Rinnai for over 7 years and are the leader in Tankless water heater service. John always made sure he gave back to the community. Celina strong, the Celina community is one of the best around. Being a part of the Celina athletics, police and fire departments was a very important part of the growth of the company. You would always see North Texas Custom Plumbing pulling the smoker/ grill to football games, cooking for the coaches and the teams for years. John said it has been a blessing bringing up the kids in Celina. The growth is coming, it’s time to embrace it. And with the growth in the area, comes an opportunity. They have surrounded themselves with great employees and have found the best builders in the area that have the same integrity that represents their company. North Texas Custom Plumbing loves a challenge; no job is too hard or too small. They are skilled to handle anything from small leaks to large new construction projects.

Here are a few recommendations from some of our Celina customers: Bill Elliott, Athletic Director Celina ISD After knowing John Carter for the past 18 years and watching him grow a successful business here in the Celina area, you come to realize what a great person he really is, how much he cares about people and goes out of his way to help those in the community. I can’t tell you the times he has done things for our athletes and families in need in our program. John is a great asset to Celina and represents what being a Bobcat is all about. Gordon Greeson, Halifax Homes – builder in Celina North Texas Custom Plumbing is our best and most trustworthy plumbing company. John Carter has extensive plumbing knowledge and is our go-to plumber for all of our plumbing needs. This company is well run and is stocked with hardworking exceptional employees. E.L. and Teena Marks, Owners Bobcat Kuntry In 1997, John Carter walked into Bobcat Kuntry and asked if he could open a charge account for his business NTCP. Not knowing him from “Adam”, we thought he had to be crazy! Well, over the next few weeks, a relationship was born. Trust, friendship and dependable work ethics emerged. This relationship also included community involvement. From cooking steaks and meals for football boys to having customer appreciation dinners together. This friendship continues today. We are honored and proud to call John and Sherry Carter our friends. Their business at North Texas Custom Plumbing has flourished because of their dedication to be of service to others. Mark Kissinger, Personal Financial Representative/Licensed Sales Producer Allstate Over the last 20 years, you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who has been more involved in the community than John Carter of North Texas Custom Plumbing. From late nights making BBQ for the QB Club to sponsoring your sports and hosting events at his home, John and Sherry have really gone the extra mile for the citizens of Celina. A lot of people will come and go and be involved for a short while and then get burned out…not John and Sherry. I really don’t know how they constantly have the energy to keep going. From a business standpoint, John is fair and is dedicated to service, and is a provider of jobs in the Celina area. John treats his customers with respect and no job is too big or too small. I’m glad that I know John and Sherry and hold them up as true Celina philanthropists.
Here are a few comments from the employees: Cariana: The North Texas Custom Plumbing workplace is very welcoming and family oriented. The plumbers are knowledgeable and friendly. This company values family and hard work. It is a pleasure to work for North Texas Custom Plumbing serving the community and helping others. Rebecca: Not only are they family oriented in their passion to provide hot water so that no family goes without, they also give back to their local communities and treat employees like family. My service plumbers always work their hardest to satisfy each and every customer. They start early and end late daily. North Texas Custom Plumbing strives to satisfy each and every customer no matter how big or small. I never expected to be so touched by our customers both in time of need and in time of gratitude. I was at the right place at the right time in a yoga class when Sherry offered me a job. Never dreamed yoga would lead me to plumbing. Liz: North Texas Custom Plumbing is a family owned, small business serving customers in the North Texas area. They care deeply about making sure you have hot water and the convenience of modern plumbing we’ve all come to depend on. Our plumbers enjoy what they do, which allows them to utilize their knowledge and skills to provide unique solutions for plumbing challenges. It has been an incredible experience as part of the new construction division to participate first hand in the growth of our community. What I appreciate most is that North Texas Custom Plumbing values families of their employees and those of the customer. This is a beautiful quality that creates an amazing team environment that enhances customer service. Cole: Getting to come to work at NTCP is a privilege. NTCP gave me a chance at the plumbing world with little to no experience. NTCP is one big ole’ family and I can't imagine I would have stuck with the plumbing trade if it weren't for John and Sherry' s patience and their overall care for their employees.

GROWING Celina with Jimmie Gibson Jr.
Herb Gardening can be Simple and Rewarding! Where would we be without herbs? It's not a very appetizing thought. Our food would taste blander, our world would smell less pleasant and we would all be a lot less healthy. For my wife Roxanne and me, herbs play an important part in our lives. We enjoy the subtle fragrance they add to our landscape. We love to snip fresh herbs just outside our kitchen door and experiment with new recipes. And we are beginning to learn more about how many herbs can make a positive difference to our health and well being. Perhaps you are like many people I've met who like the IDEA of growing their own herbs, but for one reason or another they DON'T actually do it. Here are the three main reasons - or perhaps excuses - that I've heard for not getting started: * "I don't have enough space." * "I don't want to disrupt my existing landscaping to add an herb garden." * "Herbs look so delicate. I'm sure I'd kill them off." Let's take a look at those one by one. Firstly, you don't need a lot of space in order to enjoy a fairly abundant supply of fresh herbs. In fact, you can enjoy your own herbs even if you live in a high-rise apartment with no more than a balcony! Secondly, there's no need to dedicate ANY of your precious soil specifically to herbs unless you want to, because herbs mingle well with your existing plants. And finally, most herbs are a lot hardier than you might think. In fact, some herbs (mint, for example) are like edible kudzu and are almost impossible to kill off! However, let’s suppose, for whatever reason, a dedicated "herb garden" isn't an option for you. I believe that I have the ideal solution: containers. In fact, containers actually have some advantages over 'traditional' herb gardens. The biggest benefit is that containers are mobile. You can move them around to take advantage of the sun or shade, or you can move them safely out of harm's way when you're expecting company on your deck or patio. Go to one of those large "box" stores or a garden center and take a look at the various containers on display there. You'll see terra cotta pots as well as light-weight plastic "look-alikes" and containers made of wood or clay. Your container-based mini herb garden can be very attractive and aesthetically pleasing as well as practical, so bear in mind where your containers will be located as you make your choice. Small pots or containers can be grouped together to make an infinitely variable display, or you might want to place the pots in a wooden tray so you can easily lift up and move the entire bunch in one go. If a large container looks as if it might be too heavy for easy movement, look for "container dollies" that have small wheels or casters that allow you to push it around without too much effort. Regardless of the container size or type you choose, planting your herbs is relatively simple. You should consider buying some pre-mixed soil specifically blended for container gardens. However, I know some folks prefer to use a cactus soil mix. Carefully transfer your new herbs to the container and moisten

the soil. I recommend that you don't over-water your herbs and you should let the soil become fairly, but not totally, dry before watering again. And that's pretty much all there is to do, other than monitor their exposure to the sun and move them out of the direct path of a heavy rainstorm. Every other month or so, you can add a little dose of a balanced fertilizer mixture if your herbs look like they need a pick-me-up. Most herbs can cohabit with each other successfully, so feel free to mix different varieties, particularly if you're using larger containers. Oregano, Rosemary, Mint, Sage, Parsley and Lavender will all grow happily side by side, as will many other varieties. If you have specific questions about herbs, I'll be happy to respond personally if you send me an e-mail at jimmie@absolutelybushed. com. Question: Jimmie, my backyard is so steep we are simply not able to use it for anything. What’s the best way to make this area usable? Thank you for your time, Chelsie T. in Celina. Answer: Hi Chelsie! You probably need to think in terms of one or two retaining walls to be constructed to create a tiered effect in your backyard for multilevel functional use. Perhaps one tier for aesthetic landscape, another tier for a grass play area for the kids and the last tier for your functional outdoor entertaining. Maybe you would like to have a sitting area there or an accent water feature? Maybe an outdoor kitchen or an outdoor fireplace? Obviously, every family has their own objectives and tastes but if you tier your steep backyard, you will have many more viable options. With a good designer, some amazing brainstorming, thinking about what fits your family's needs and budget, the possibilities are simply endless! Until next time…Happy Gardening!!!

Celebrating 33 Years with Celina Independent School District By Jodie Brownd
S
ammy Hernandez moved to Celina, Texas with his wife Lydia in 1974. The two, who grew up in Hondo, Texas were childhood friends, high school sweethearts and each other's first loves. They made their home and raised their children here in Celina and Sammy is a fixture in this tight-knit community no matter who you ask.
change. Through sentimental tears, Sammy thanked his friends, family and administration for their support through the years and giving him the opportunity to work hard for a school district that he loves.
On any given weekday over the past 33.3 years you would have found him around town and in the schools keeping things in order…whether that meant he was mowing the grass, fixing broken items or making sure students got to their destinations by driving the bus. No matter what the task, teachers, faculty and administrators knew who to call for help in any situation.
On September 27th, Sammy and his wife will have been married for 48 years. They have three children - a daughter Rosie and two sons Abel and Samuel Junior. They have eleven grandchildren and four great grandbabies. These two sweethearts have made a wonderful life for themselves and have so much to be proud of. They also have so much to look forward to.
Although Sammy's title was never established, it was very clear at his retirement party on Wednesday, May 23rd, that he was a "Jack of All Trades" and irreplaceable to Celina ISD. Sammy, who had only had three jobs in his entire lifetime, smiles with pride when he talks about his time with the school, the relationships he established and the friends he's made. “It's easy to see the impact he's had in the lives of people in our community,” Choc Christopher, says. "Sammy is one of the finest men you could ever meet, a hard worker with a heart for service and sweet spirit."
When asked what will fill their time now as retirees, the two spoke with excitement about their summer travels. Sammy not only retired from his role at Celina ISD this year. 2018 also marks 33.3 years in the U.S. Military as he is also retiring from the Army National Guard. He was first stationed in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina and had promised his sweetheart he'd take her there someday. He will honor that promise this summer as the two will finally get to vacation there. They'll also be heading to Boise, Idaho to visit family.
Tom Moore spoke of what a fan Sammy is of his beloved Celina Bobcats. "Anywhere the Bobcats were, you could find Sammy talking shop and football. Everyone knows him as a fixture and lifeline in the community, a real die-hard Bobcat fan." Men like Sammy Hernandez don't just retire, they always have a special place in the hearts of the people that know them and depend on them. When you dedicate that many years of your life to a career, you can't help but be tender-hearted about the thought of
Thank you, Sammy Hernandez, not only for your service at Celina ISD, thank you also for your contribution to your community and the education of the students whose daily lives would not have been the same without you. Thank you for being a Bobcat, and for being such an integral part of what makes our community great. Thank you for your time, your care, your dedication and thank you mostly for your service to our country~ We salute you.

Hemphill Orthodontics Celebrates Grand Opening
By Jodie Brownd
O
n May 8th, everyone was all smiles at the Grand Opening of Hemphill Orthodontics. The new practice is located at 1050 S. Preston Rd, Suite 122 in Celina, Texas and Dr. Blake Hemphill and his staff are excited and ready to take care of all your orthodontic needs. Blake and Kayli Hemphill and their now 8-month-old son, Witten, moved to Celina in December, and immediately began preparing the practice to open for business. Dr. Hemphill said, “We first visited Celina after being told how great of a family environment it is. Since the very beginning, everyone has been so welcoming to us, and we already feel like members of the community. It's also very exciting to be the first orthodontist in Celina, and to know we can provide care with a convenient schedule and location.” Dr. Hemphill attended Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry and completed a residency to specialize in orthodontics and dento-facial orthopedics at Saint Louis University in Missouri. When asked how he knew he wanted to be an orthodontist, Dr. Hemphill explained, “During dental school, my orthodontic rotations always left me amazed at what we can accomplish. It was easy to recognize that an orthodontic specialty was the perfect fit for me. Through our regular treatment visits, we form meaningful relationships with our patients, and that gives us a great sense of fulfillment.” In orthodontics, he loves that he gets to watch people's lives change as they see their smiles change. “People come to us because they want the services we offer, and we believe that makes our office environment always a positive one. The nature of our treatment gives us the opportunity to get to know families and connect with our community,” says Dr. Hemphill. “We
truly believe that you won't find another place as dedicated to excellence. We believe in caring for the person first and putting them above ourselves. We would be honored to be chosen as your orthodontic team.” Hemphill Orthodontics is a local practice specializing in providing orthodontic care, braces and Invisalign for children, teens, and adults. They are focused on creating a family-centered office environment, and pride themselves on offering the highest quality treatment available. They believe that what they do is important and makes a difference in people’s lives, while working hard to ensure that their patients’ experiences reflect that. We are as excited to welcome Hemphill Orthodontics to Celina, Texas as they are to serve us and the surrounding communities, one smile at a time!

In His Presence
A Good Father W
hen someone mentions the word “Father” most of us think of our own dad. Growing up in the 80’s I remember the good ole mullets, jeans tighter than I’d care to admit, and my dad being along for the journey saying, “You need a haircut”. My dad was pretty strict on me growing up and unlike many of my friends, I had a curfew. I always thought that most all of the fun in the world happened after my 10:30pm curfew on Friday nights. It wasn’t until I was in my mid 20’s that I realized I wasn’t missing out on anything important and that my dad was right in having me home early (so I would stay out of trouble). My dad taught me how to shoot guns, fish, throw a football, change the oil in my car, and much more. It seemed my dad knew just about everything about everything and wanted me to learn much more than I wanted to listen to. But one thing that really stood out to me growing up was that many of my friends didn’t have a dad. Just like today, many people grow up without a dad for one reason or the other. So when someone mentions a dad being a good father, they really don’t have a frame of reference to understand what that means. Jesus told a story in Luke chapter 15 about a good father with two sons. His oldest son was hard working and responsible. The younger son was almost exactly the opposite of his older brother. In fact, the younger son wanted out of the house, so he asked his dad for his inheritance and went looking for adventure. This younger son spent his money partying, living the life he thought he wanted. But like so many people today, “living the life” isn’t quite what they dreamed it would be. Just like I found out that after 10:30pm, there wasn’t much I was missing out on - the younger son blew all of his money and found himself broke, sad and wishing he was one of his father’s hired servants. In fact, when he finally came to his senses he decided to go back and ask his father for a job as his servant. Luke 15:20 NLT says, “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.” This is what a good father looks like. Even though his son had messed up, done stupid things, wasted all of his money, he was looking for him to return. And when he saw him a long way off, he ran to him and embraced him. The younger son apologized and was trying to convince him to hire him, but the good father wasn’t interested in having another servant, he wanted his son back. As we celebrate Father’s Day this month, let’s remember what a good father is like. Maybe you never had a dad growing up, or maybe your dad has passed away. Whatever the case may be, you have a Heavenly Father who loves you and wants to be a part of your life. The story Jesus told us in Luke 15 wasn’t just a story with no meaning. It was to explain how much God loves us and longs to have a relationship with us. He is a Good Father. Chris Carter is the pastor at Movement Church, located in Downtown Celina on the Square. Services are on Sunday mornings at 10:30am. For more information, please visit their website at www.MovementChurch.faith.

Celina Elementary Student of the Month… Krew Weston Smalley
Krew Weston Smalley, a first grader at Celina Elementary, has a lot to be proud of. This cutie thanks his teachers, friends and family for helping him achieve his exciting new title "Student of the Month" for April.
Krew is #7 on his many sports teams, as he plays football, baseball and basketball. When he grows up he'd like to be a Veterinarian or an athlete for the NFL or NBA. He has 2 sisters, Sarah and Kyleigh and 2 pet cats. When asked why he thought he won Student of the Month, this recipient who has also won many Bobcat awards in his 2-year academic history said, "It is probably because I try to be very quiet, use my manners and raise my hand before speaking”. When I asked if he won because he's just an overall good kid he said, "Pretty much." Mrs. Edwards, Krew's first Grade teacher is a special lady if you ask him. "She kept the award a secret all day long" he said. He followed that with “What is so great about her is the fact that she tells us that all of her students are a part of her family”. We think that the main things she has taught her 1st Grade class is the importance of being kind and having selfconfidence. He also thinks a whole lot of Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Teresa as they are “thoughtful and caring, too”. And another one of Krew's favorite people is his Paw Paw, who he calls "Pops." One of his best memories is when Pops took him on a vacation to St. Croix where he got to go swimming and play volleyball, ping pong and frisbee. We understand that on June 25th, Krew will turn 8 years old and we'd like to wish him a Happy Birthday and say Congratulations for being a phenomenal 1st Grader. We'd also like to wish all of the students, teachers and administrators at Celina Elementary, a very Happy Summer. Keep up the great work building our future leaders, one student at a time!
