CISD News

From the Desk of Rick DeMasters Over the past year, my monthly reflections have followed a similar theme that revolves around growth. It’s not a secret and whether we love it or hate it, the reality is that our city and our district will be dealing with this matter for many, many years to come. There are positive and negative aspects when dealing with growth. The positives include economic growth, the development of new jobs/positions, and creating partnerships between businesses and the district to give our students opportunities that we have never had the ability to provide. On the flip side, the negatives can include pollution, overcrowding, ongoing construction, and the possibility of change to traditions and the small-town life as we have come to know. Over the past several years, Celina ISD has been gathering data from neighboring school districts to help us better plan for the future. From what worked well to what not to do gives us an advantage during our strategic sessions as we continue to map out the timeline that will shape our district for the years to come. During these sessions, the bottom line always comes down to money. No school district has at their disposal the funds needed to construct buildings and/or improve existing facilities. This is a process that takes many years to bring to fruition. On top of our facility needs, the state continues to cut funding, which forces districts to sever opportunities for students and faculty in order to allocate money where it will have the most impact. Last month, a charge was sent from the Texas Association of School Boards to every school district in the State of Texas to create a culture of voting. TASB’s belief is that changes need to be made in Austin and these changes

8

CM

will come through exercising one’s right to vote. The Celina School Board signed a resolution that our district would support a culture of voting and would encourage participation by not only our District employees, but eligible students as well. By voting, we decide how much to fund education, how much attention should be spent on standardized testing, and/or how much support for growth is needed through bond elections. For those that don’t believe they can make a difference, let me share with you an example of a situation that recently happened to a school district in Texas. The district finds itself on the cusp of growth, surrounded by aging facilities and overcrowded campuses. A bond election was called that would include the construction of multiple campuses, technology upgrades and improvements to athletic and existing facilities. After the election results were tabulated, the bond failed by less than 100 votes. What made it more disappointing was that over 40% of the district employees did not vote, which would have made a huge difference in the outcome of the election. This is just one example of why TASB charged districts across our state to cultivate a culture of voting by asking district employees and students to lead the charge and help propel Texas out of last place in regard to voter turnout. The example shared above resonates with me because the bond package includes many of the same needs that can be attributed to our district. In the near future, our community will be asked to support a bond that will be designed with our students in mind and their needs for the future. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Those who stay away from the election that think one vote will do no good. ‘Tis but one step more to think one vote will do no harm.”

In A Season of Thankfulness By Jill Joseph Roza

It can be said that the pictures and stories released of the aftermath left by Hurricane Harvey had strangers dropping their daily routines to offer assistance, support, and supplies to those greatly affected by the storm. High School Athletic Directors across the State of Texas were asked to “pass the helmet” at Friday night football games to help districts that were having to put on hold their athletic programs due to heavy damage sustained to their athletic facilities. Celina ISD kicked off fundraising efforts by partnering with Princeton ISD, collecting over 2,600 dollars during the first football game of the season. Shortly after, every CISD campus began a fundraising campaign. Some were aimed to help specific schools, while others adopted grade levels. With every natural disaster, aid comes quickly, but slows as the weeks go by and those affected begin to find a new normal. The slowing process was not sitting well with some of the 6th grade students. Chandlyr Taylor, Reagan Radtke, and Major Brignon felt that more needed to be done to help those

10

that were still struggling. The three arrived at the campus wearing white t-shirts freshly painted with the slogan “Every Cent Count$,” and pitched their idea to Celina 6th Grade Center Principal Kimber Kincaid. Students were encouraged to bring their spare change to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Chandlyr, Reagan, and Major arrived early to collect before school and took shifts during lunch time. Almost 100 students arrived at school the following day, wearing white t-shirts and armed with pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. As the collection process continued, Celina 6th Grade Teacher Becky Reed started following a Facebook fundraising site titled, “Adopt a Classroom.” The group listed schools/districts that were seeking donations to help them get back on their feet again. Willing schools would be paired with those that were in need of essential supplies lost during the hurricane. Through that group, Becky was connected to A.C. Blunt Middle School 7th grade teacher Cynthia Bonifer. The Aransas Pass ISD Middle School campus was not spared from the devastating damage from Hurricane Harvey. Cynthia shared that, “our campus was 100% affected and most of our contents lost. We are temporarily at Charlie Marshall Elementary School, which is where the majority of our students attended 4th and 5th grades.” Funds raised through Every Cent Count$, totaled fifteen hundred dollars for the A.C. Blunt 7th graders. The five core teachers were given gift cards to be used for classroom materials, teacher desk supplies, posters, and to replenish their classroom libraries that were damaged. A small portion of the money collected was spent on supplies for their students. Five boxes

filled with pencils, pens, markers, paper, journals, and composition books are now in the hands of these 7th grade students. Our sixth graders also wrote letters to the students at A.C. Blunt and will be receiving responses in the weeks to come. When asked what this means to their school, Ms, Bonifer shared, “The time, effort, and money your school, staff, and students put into raising the necessary funds has been amazing! We have been feeling your support in material and nonmaterial ways, and this helped give us renewed energy and hope for the remainder of our school year.” Celina 6th Grade Center Principal Kimber Kincaid shared that, “this was truly a student initiated fundraiser and I couldn’t be more proud of the leadership and determined spirit shown by our students and staff to help others in need.” These students know that behind Every Cent Count$, the true meaning is Every Child Counts and their hope for making the school year just a little bit brighter for one particular group of students has come true!

The Sweet Life

Bringing Awareness

to

Type One Diabetes By: Renee Marler

Camden Caldwell and Colton Needum became friends after Camden was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in July of 2014. November is recognized across the globe as National Diabetes Awareness Month. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Both are chronic diseases that are very serious and can cause life-long complications or even death. The most common type of diabetes is Type 2 Diabetes, which accounts for approximately ninety percent of diabetes cases. In Type 2 Diabetes, the body is unable to use insulin effectively, which is called insulin resistance. As Type 2 Diabetes progresses, the pancreas may begin to produce less insulin, resulting in insulin deficiency. Often times Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented or delayed when combined with a healthy lifestyle. In the lesser-known and highly misunderstood Type 1 Diabetes, the pancreas stops producing the hormone that controls blood sugar levels, called insulin. The body mistakenly destroys the beta cells, that produce insulin, which ultimately presents as Type 1 Diabetes. Because it is an auto-immune disease, there is nothing anyone can do to prevent Type 1 Diabetes. Only 5% of people with diabetes have Type 1 Diabetes, for which there is currently no cure. Because Type 1 Diabetes is a disease that does not go away and requires constant management, it’s not uncommon for T1D’s in communities to form friendships for encouragement and support. In Celina, the initial group was formed on Facebook and meets monthly when possible. Andrew and Stephanie Needum’s 8 year-old son, Colton, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2012. Just two months after Colton, another Celina youth was facing the same diagnosis. Chet

14

CelinaMagazine.com | November 2017

Hefton, son of Michael and Ronda Hefton was diagnosed two days after Christmas in 2012. Both families say one major struggle is exhaustion and fear. “I fear Type 1 taking over or overshadowing all other life experiences because this disease is all-consuming,” said Ronda. The Needum’s added, “The constant reminder that our child has this disease is exhausting, every time he eats something, we know we have to make sure we count everything and dose his insulin correctly.” With each correct diagnosis, there is a story of a misdiagnosis that can cause serious long-term effects and sometimes even death. Jimmy and Renee Marler’s son, Camden, was diagnosed in the summer of 2014 at the age of seven after being misdiagnosed at a local emergency room. Two days before his diagnosis, Camden was vomiting and feeling poorly. Renee took him to the emergency room hoping to get the nausea under control. The doctor did a quick examination and determined he had a stomach virus. Renee was instructed to take him home with some anti-nausea medicine and to “let the virus run it’s course” but to return if he was not better in four to five days. “You know your children, and he was just not himself,” Renee said. “So, I took him back the next day and that’s when it all started.” The following day, at the same emergency room they had visited previously, a different doctor was on call and after a few questions quickly called for a simple test requiring one drop of blood. Within five minutes, the diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes was confirmed and

Camden was in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) as Renee watched her son be loaded into an ambulance to be transported to Children’s Hospital. After they arrived in the ICU at Children’s Hospital, Renee was told by the doctor that Camden was a very sick child and was approximately 24-hours away from death. “So if we had followed the original orders of a trusted medical professional, we would have buried our son,” said Renee. “This is why awareness is so important.” The symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes come on quickly and can often be masked as a virus or even the flu. Symptoms include drowsiness or lethargy, extreme thirst, frequent urination, heavy or labored breathing, sudden weight loss, fruity breath, and sometimes unconsciousness. “If they had done a simple blood test on the first day, we would have known sooner,” said Renee. “Because Type 1 Diabetes can be diagnosed at almost any age, I think anyone who has those symptoms should be tested without exception.” Living with Type 1 Diabetes is often times a struggle, but as more people understand about the disease, that weight becomes a little lighter.

Veronica Mueller, DDS Gentle Creek Dental Dr. Veronica Mueller, a Texas-educated dentist, opened her private practice in Prosper in July, 2017. The daughter of a teacher and a career military officer, she grew up in multiple states and countries, but got back to her family’s home state of Texas as soon as she could. Graduating from Southern Methodist University then heading straight to the University of Texas School of Dentistry, Veronica always dreamed of owning her own office. After completing her Doctor of Dental Surgery, Veronica practiced her profession in different settings, learning about all types of dental businesses – “the good, the bad, and the ugly.” After gaining professional experience and learning about the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of business models, Veronica and her husband, John choose Prosper as the ideal place to put down roots. According to Dr. Mueller’s philosophy, owning and operating your own business, means your values, beliefs, knowledge, and tastes are reflected in everything from the plants in your waiting room to the anesthetic in your operatory. Some think that the old-fashioned hometown dentist is an artifact of the past, and that corporate chains are the way of the future; but Dr. Mueller believes deeply that long-term personal relationships, mutual respect, and caring are essential for optimal health care delivery.

1180 N Coit Road Suite # 50 Prosper, TX 75078 972-347-6400 www.gentlecreekdental.com

When Dr. Mueller thought about the kind of practice she wanted to create, she knew she had to incorporate the latest technology. Dr. Mueller is so proud to offer digital scanning for crowns, veneers, bridges, occlusal guards and many other services. Scanning is not just an awesome tool to facilitate work returning from the lab quicker, at the end of your scan it is possible to manipulate the 3D image of your teeth on the touch screen computer! Gentle Creek Dental also provides only digital radiography (x-rays). Digital not only means faster diagnostic procedures but less radiation exposure. Dr. Mueller and the staff are happy to file your insurance and assist you with any questions you may have regarding your treatment or insurance benefits. Dr. Mueller is proud to be the second generation of women business owners in her family. She is dedicated to creating a dental practice focused on the needs of the people she serves, and summed up her objective quite simply, saying, “My goal is to have a dental practice that offers everything that I want as a Patient.” Dr. Mueller invites you to stop by her offices, take the grand tour, and visit with the Gentle Creek Dental Family. They are open Tuesday through Friday, with Saturday hours by appointment.
