Safety Steps for Spooky Fun Traditional family activities like trick-or-treating create fun moments and memories, but the effects of COVID-19 on this Halloween will bring about change for the spooky excitement. You can still ensure a special night for your little ones and all the ghouls, goblins and ghosts in your neighborhood by following safety measures aimed at keeping everyone healthy on All Hallows’ Eve. Consider these tips for safe trick-or-treating from the experts at the National Safety Council and leading candy maker, Mars Wrigley. BEFORE Buy individually wrapped candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters. Fun-size packs are one of the easiest forms of candy for trick-or-treaters to grab and go. Create fun, individual candy goody bags for a no-touch option for trickor-treaters. Make sure your yard is well-lit; replace any burnt-out light bulbs. Create signs encouraging trick-or-treaters to stay 6 feet apart and display them in your yard. Don’t hand out treats if you are not feeling well. Consider socially distanced options such as “trunk-or-treating,” during which prepackaged goodies are handed out, or a virtual costume parade. Alternately, you can use a tool like Mars Wrigley’s “TREAT TOWNTM,” an app-based digital experience for families to virtually trick-or-treat for real candy. It offers Halloween fans of all ages the ability to create personalized spooky avatars, customized decorations for your in-app “door” and the ability to “knock” on the doors of friends and family across the country. Visit Treat-Town.com to find more information. DURING Make trick-or-treating care packs with hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and extra face masks. Help little ones clean their hands throughout the night. Maintain a distance of 6 feet from other groups of trick-or-treaters, allowing one group to collect candy at a time. Wear face masks and reflective tape or clothing and carry flashlights or glow sticks if you’re walking in the dark. 6 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

Do “mask checks.” Stop in a safe place and make sure young children’s masks are covering their mouths and noses. Use sidewalks and crosswalks. Don’t cross the street between cars and be as visible as possible as drivers may be distracted. Consider setting up a grab-and-go “candy corner” for visitors, inclusive of hand sanitizer and treats. AFTER Wash your hands when you get home. Sanitize candy wrappers before eating or let it sit for 24 hours. Follow the “when in doubt, throw it out” rule. Throw away any candy that is open, ripped or has torn packaging, an unusual appearance or pinholes. Discard any homemade items made by people you don’t know. Watch for choking hazards. If you have a young child, make sure candy he or she collected isn’t a choking hazard. If it is, discard it. Keep candy away from pets, especially chocolate and sugar-free gum, which can be poisonous for your furry friends. HANDING OUT TREATS FROM HOME If you’re staying home to hand out treats to the superheroes, ghosts, princesses and other little guests that arrive on your doorstep, consider these ideas to encourage safety and fun: Minimize the number of hands reaching into a bowl. Find fun, hands-free ways to give candy to trick-or-treaters. You can place candy on your lawn or driveway, so trick-or-treaters don’t have to crowd around your front door, touch handrails or knock. Move out of the way any items that children could trip over and keep pets inside. Stand outside when handling treats, wear a mask and use hand sanitizer often. Consider keeping a large bottle of sanitizer near you for visitors to use as well. Allow one small group at a time at your door. Give out one set of treats at a time to minimize hands reaching into a common bowl. For example, fun-size packs of treats like M&M’s and SNICKERS offer plenty of options and are easy for trick-or-treaters to grab and go.

Life & Luxury Magazine Celina ISD

Paving the Way for the Future Dear Bobcats, On Saturday, October 3, Celina ISD held a small ceremony to formally dedicate the Marcy B. Lykins Elementary School. Marcy Lykins joined the faculty of Celina Elementary School in the fall of 2012 as a beloved pre-kindergarten teacher, and she is credited with establishing the bilingual program on the campus. With over seventeen years of experience in education, the footprints Marcy left behind are deeply rooted in selflessness, kindness, and humility. She brightened the halls of the school and the hearts of all she met with joy and laughter. Customarily, a building dedication would include an open house for our entire community, but current restrictions allowed only for a limited number of guests. CISD administrators, board members, and teachers joined the Lykins family for the dedication, and we were honored to have joining us former Celina ISD Superintendent and O’Dell Elementary namesake, Donny O’Dell. At the conclusion of the event, guests toured the facility and the beautiful garden behind the school, which was also a vision of Marcy’s. This garden became a reality with help from the Friends of Celina Gardens and over 150 other generous donors and volunteers. Great educators like Marcy Lykins and Donny O’Dell, and all the people of our community who support our schools, truly represent what it means to be Celina Connected. Part of this connection to our community is represented by our commitment to being financially prudent as we face the many challenges of our growing district. At the September board meeting, the Celina ISD Board of Trustees approved the district tax rate for this year, which formally concludes the 2020-2021 budget process. This year’s tax rate of $1.4832 is the lowest school district tax rate in over 20 years, and effectively reduces last year’s tax rate by .53%. This rate will decrease taxes for maintenance and operations on a $100,000 home by approximately $65.70 next year. School funding will continue to be a great challenge to all districts in the coming years, but the challenge is even greater for smaller school districts, particularly fast-growth districts like Celina ISD. In this next legislative session, our state will grapple with a $4.6 billion dollar deficit in this biennium alone, and school districts have been cautioned to anticipate further cuts in school funding. Our district is charged by the state to continue reducing taxes on the local level while also managing our ever-growing population. This fall has been an exciting time in Celina ISD and we look forward to new opportunities to connect with our families and our community as we continue “Paving the Way for the Future.” Go Bobcats! Colorful Kitchen Inspiration: 5 Impactful, On-Trend Cabinet Stylings The kitchen is the heart of many homes, and careful planning is a necessity when it comes to redesigning this essential living space. Picking out cabinetry – and a color for those cabinets, in particular – can be a challenging process. Everything from the style of your cabinets to the amount of natural light your space receives are key factors to consider when choosing an updated hue. While white cabinets are an everlasting choice, and woodstained cabinetry once held 70% of the market, painted cabinets now account for 70% of sales, signaling a significant shift among homeowners and their preferences. While there are virtually no limitations when it comes to the paint, stain and glaze options available to complement your overall kitchen design, the current stylings reflected in Wellborn Cabinet’s annual color trends provides an opening to a range of impactful colors, such as grays, blues, blacks and wood tones, and a mixture of these on-trend hues. A GRAY FOR EVERY MOOD While gray cabinets have been a popular design choice for several years, much like shades of white, no two grays are exactly alike. Cabinet colors live on a color spectrum that ranges from warm to neutral to dark; warm grays have yellow or brown undertones while cool grays have hushed hues of blue. Neutral gray, or Ash, is a true black and white mixture of colors. However, many homeowners are opting for warmer or cooler shades instead. For example, light gray cabinets can create a chic, modern motif for homeowners looking to liven up their space while avoiding completely white cabinetry. One of the latest gray trends is a warmer gray that can look almost beige, earning the nickname “greige.” Shades of dark gray – whether painted or stained – are also options for making a luxurious, traditional statement that can span ever-changing color trends.

14 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

A SEA OF BLUE One of today’s hottest trends in kitchen cabinetry is the use of shades of blue, which provide calming and restful effects and the feeling of harmony and serenity. Pops of blue can be used as an accent color on islands or on either upper or base cabinets. To balance out these dramatic darks, many homeowners are opting to pair a bold color choice like a navy hue – such as Bleu – with neutral to warm whites, such as wool and bone white, to create a crisp, clean look. Gold hardware can be used on navy cabinetry for an upscale and regal look while silver-tone hardware provides a contemporary finishing touch. While lighter shades of blue, like aqua, are perfect for keeping spaces light and airy, one of the latest colors to emerge is a mid-tone classic blue. A balanced option like Sapphire from Wellborn Cabinet, which is a classic, mid-tone royal blue available in the Premier and Estate Series framed cabinetry, as well as the full-access, frameless Aspire Series, can help create energy and inspiration for dining or cooking. MIXED WOOD TONES Even with the rise in painted woods, stains are seeing a surge in popularity. The application of stain to natural wood can enhance the character of the cabinetry. Neutral color, dimension, texture and soft luxury can be layered into nearly any space to create a blended balance. Wood grains typically pair well with whites, grays, blues and brass tones – all of which are popular colors in modern kitchens and other localized entertaining areas such as in-home refreshment areas or bars. DARK DRAMA Often overlooked as more of an “accent” color, black has become livable, luxe and inviting with textured woods adding rustic, homely charm. For example, Wellborn Cabinet offers a decorative laminate veneer option in matte black. Edgy but classic, black cabinets can pair perfectly with nearly any design element still in its natural wooden state to create a distinct style that is all your own. MULTI-TONES AND UNEXPECTED POPS OF COLOR While all-white palettes have long reigned supreme in the kitchen for their timelessness and versatility, straying from neutral tones can add an energetic and welcoming feel to nearly any space. Smaller kitchens that once had an all-white look are getting a facelift by adding a burst of bright, bold color on either the upper or base cabinets. Adding colorful retro appliances or using the island as a canvas for an energetic and welcoming pop of color can also make a similar statement and help create a space unique to your style and personality. Many homeowners are even pairing two or more complementary colors to create two- and three-toned looks. For example, lighter gray, Shale or blue can be used for the upper cabinets with darker shades used below for the base cabinetry, or a neutral hue can be used on the uppers with a contrast color on the bottom. In three-toned kitchens, an additional color or material is introduced to create asymmetry in the palette to help define zones or functions and keep the eye moving.

How Safe is your Backyard?

Throughout the work year, I see quite a few backyards! I consistently notice bad designs or a layout of structures, plants and miscellaneous items that can become, or have already become, hazardous. Either the resident or their children can be exposed to unnecessary risks. DANGEROUS GRILL PLACEMENT A charcoal grill next to combustibles (say, a wooden deck rail or low-hanging tree branches) is a leading cause of BBQ fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. EASY FIX: Always make sure to leave a 10-foot clearing between your grill and deck rails, the side of the house, and overhanging plants, says David Markenson, MD, chairman of the American Red Cross Advisory Council on First Aid and Safety. TOXIC PLANTS More than 68,000 people a year are poisoned by plants, reports the American Association of Poison Control Centers. Most end up with nothing worse than an upset stomach or an itchy skin rash. However, some plants can be fatal, especially to pets and small children. EASY FIX: Do your homework before choosing backyard vegetation, says Amy Stewart, author of Flower Confidential: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful in the Business of Flowers. A few common plants require caution: Oleander, datura (also called jimson weed), and castor bean are all dangerous if swallowed. For a complete list of toxic plants, check out prevention.com/links. TINY POOLS OF WATER Even the smallest amount of standing water can give mosquitoes a hospitable place to multiply, which raises your

16 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

risk of bites — and infections such as West Nile virus. “I’ve seen mosquitoes breeding in a soda bottle cap,” says Joseph Conlon, technical advisor for the American Mosquito Control Association. EASY FIX: Do a weekly check of buckets and plastic covers and dump any water to keep pests away. Also change the water in birdbaths, fountains, pet water bowls and bird feeders. NOT-QUITE-EXTINGUISHED CHARCOAL Charcoal may feel cool to the touch, but if you throw away coals while the insides are hot, you risk starting a fire. EASY FIX: When you’ve finished grilling dinner, soak coals with cold water and then place them in a noncombustible metal can for safe disposal. Keep the can on a nonflammable surface, such as the driveway or a concrete patio. AN UNFENCED POOL According to the Home Safety Council, nearly a quarter of all drownings in the United States happen near home. Even if your kids are older, consider this: Easy access to your pool may lure neighborhood children or pets into the water when you’re not around. EASY FIX: Whether your pool is built in or above ground, install a four-sided fence that is at least 5 feet high, with a selflatching gate. Don’t use the house as one side of the fence, because an open door provides an easy entry, and never place patio furniture close enough to the fence that it could be used to scale the barrier. PESTICIDE RESIDUE “Homeowners often use too many pesticides — conventional or natural — or apply them incorrectly”, says Jennifer Sass, PhD, a senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council.

This not only wastes money but, in extreme cases, allows chemical levels to get high enough to cause flu like symptoms, she adds. EASY FIX: Cut down on pests naturally by attracting birds and insects that eat the bugs that are attacking your prized roses. Install a birdhouse designed for bluebirds, which feed on insects or grow plants — such as those in the parsley and sunflower families — that attract predatory insects such as assassin bugs and parasitic wasps. Despite their ominous-sounding names, these critters do your garden good; predatory insects don’t hurt plants or people but destroy the bugs that do. Growing plants native to our region, which are less susceptible to infestation, can help also.

Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Birds | Exotics Pocket Pets and Reptiles All Dog and Cat Breed Grooming and Boarding

A WEATHER-WORN DECK If you don’t waterproof your deck every 3 to 5 years, moisture can seep in and warp the wood, upping your risk of falls. EASY FIX: Inspect your deck every spring, paying extra attention to the ledger board, the place where the deck attaches to the house — it’s the most vulnerable to water damage. Keep your eyes peeled for splits and cracks — signs that moisture has gotten in. If you can easily penetrate ¼ to ½ inch of the wood with a screwdriver or ice pick, the wood may need to be replaced for safety reasons especially for kids.

TOO-SHORT LADDER This tempts you to overreach — and increases your risk of falling. EASY FIX: Use a ladder that lets you work while standing four steps from the top. Your max reach should be no more than 4 feet above the ladder. Translation: If you’re going up 8 feet, choose a ladder that’s at least 4 feet high. Always follow the 4-to-1 rule: For every 4 feet the ladder extends up the house, bring the base out by a foot. “This gives you stability,” says Meri-K Appy, president of the Home Safety Council.

Question: Jimmie, what about lawn herbicides? Is it too late now that fall has come to worry about weeds? Thanks for your help! – Tim in Celina Answer: Hi Tim! No, fall is a good time to apply herbicides to broadleaf weeds, especially some of the perennials, like dandelions. Such weeds will not be killed by the cold weather that’s right around the corner (in the North) once fall ends. They will be here next year so you might as well eradicate them now! Until next time...Happy Gardening!!

6 Ways to Wear Plaid this Fall Fall. Along with seasonal favorites like crispy leaves, cooler weather and pumpkin spiced everything, fall really gives us some serious back-to-school vibes, which in turn, make us think: PLAID—the fall print of choice. WEAR & PAIR Not sure how to coordinate your plaid with other pieces in your wardrobe? Start with a piece in black and white and add a pop of fall color, in this case, a gorgeous goldenrod lady coat. We love the casual look of gray booties and a black clutch here, but this adorable dress would look just as good with, say, a mulberry moto jacket and black boots. TOP IT OFF Dark denim is definitely a fall wardrobe staple and pairing it with a plaid shirt is a no-brainer. But, plot twist: this denim and plaid look relies on a top that’s much dressier than your average grunge-style flannel (not that there’s anything wrong with that!). The result, when paired with an olive tote and luscious cranberry flats, is an outfit that will take you a lot further than the corner coffee shop. MEET OUR FRIEND, GLEN Glen plaid is characterized by its web of broken checks in alternating stripes crossing each other to create smaller and larger checks, and it’s a staple in menswear. Done in an elegant pale gray, glen plaid pants paired with a navy pullover and cherry red top handle bag are office or errand perfect, don’t you think? Add a pair of slides, and you’ve got yourself a very versatile look. SKIRT THE ISSUE Plaid and skirts go together like cookies and milk—and this particular skirt, with its subtle navy and olive pattern almost works as a solid when paired with a graphic maroon and gray sweater. This is advanced plaid styling! Pull the whole look together with booties and a crossbody bag in neutral tones. PLAID ABOUT THE WEEKEND A comfy, faded pair of jeans and a soft plaid shirt in a warm shade of red… this is an outfit made for downtime. For an uber-casual Saturday, feel free to wear this look with your favorite pair of sneakers—change to a heeled bootie in sophisticated taupe to take you into the evening. Dinner and a movie, anyone? DRESS FOR SUCCESS Plaid has long been the pattern of casual pieces—flannels, kilts and the like. But what happens when you make a body skimming sleeveless sheath dress out of a tartan plaid? Fall fashion magic. Topped with a black blazer and paired with matching accessories, this look is a Monday through Friday win. Paired with a cashmere cardigan and sparkly shoes, your plaid sheath is ready for date night. We hope this guide gives you some ideas for having a mad, plaid fall. Get started on your adventure by scheduling a Fix and requesting some plaid pieces of your own. Article compliments of Stitch Fix. Visit http://www.stitchfix.com to schedule your fix!

Travel Smart in a COVID-19 World

Many Americans’ summer vacation plans were delayed or canceled due to safety concerns. However, making time for a mental break is important as individuals attempt to manage ongoing stress related to COVID-19. Americans are reporting feelings of isolation, burnout and a need of a break after months of quarantine. Nearly two-thirds (62%) of Americans haven’t taken a vacation day, much less a trip, since the coronavirus outbreak earlier this year, according to a survey conducted by travel website Hotwire. Interest in local travel and shorter trips, however, is growing. In fact, 72% of Americans are still planning or are interested in summer travel this year, despite a desire to take additional precautions to stay healthy. “It’s important to not only flatten the COVID-19 curve, but also the mental health curve,” said Dr. Mike Dow, a brain-health expert and “New York Times” best-selling author. “A short getaway can be a long-term investment in your mental well-being. Changing your surroundings can actually boost dopamine in the brain, which can improve your mood and energy, and provide a much-needed self-care boost.” If you’re looking to test the travel waters, consider these tips from Hotwire and Dow on how to be prepared, not scared, when traveling: MAKE IT SHORT AND SWEET. Quick breaks can provide benefits similar to those of a longer vacation, and even a brief change of scenery can help you recharge. An overnight or weekend trip can be enough to give your brain the rest it needs. BOOK AT THE LAST MINUTE. Consider booking a trip shortly before you want to depart so there’s no risk of your plans changing due to unexpected travel restrictions. Many hotels and travel sites now list the cleanliness and safety measures being taken, so you can take this into account when booking your accommodations. Despite what you may think, you can also take advantage of last-minute discounts on booking sites like Hotwire, whose Hot Rate deals often get even better the week before departure. DO YOUR PRE-TRIP RESEARCH. It’s important to check for the most recent local or regional travel recommendations in both your city and your destination before you plan a trip. Look into what facilities are open and whether occupancy limits or reservation requirements may affect your plans. Also check into any travel limitations and whether you will be subject to quarantine upon arrival or after visiting certain locations. STAY CLOSE TO HOME. Consider local destinations or those within easy driving distance. It’s the change in routine, rather than how far you go, that can benefit your mental health, so explore a city close to home while reaping the same restorative benefits of a more exotic location. For more information on how to travel safely, or to find last-minute travel deals, visit hotwire.com or download the app. 22 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
