A brand-new school year is here!! It’s a fresh start as well as a winding down of a seasonal year and both let us know one thing. Good times are coming. These celebratory moments that fall brings are kicked off by sounds we’ve all come to know and love. Whistles, helmets colliding, cheers, chants and the drumline…they go right alongside the smells of hotdogs, fresh air and popcorn. The moment the field lights turn on in any small town in Texas, on fall Friday nights, their blinding beacons shine down on a production that brings together communities. Like a perfect orchestra with many parts, many roles, many participants…combined with blood sweat and tears, all for the same cause – a hometown victory. Kids. They are the reason for this season and the reason our hearts beat a little faster on Friday nights in the fall. Whether they’re in the band, drill team, on the cheerleading squad or the football or volleyball team, we’re about to see them in their element and in what is known as some of the best times of their lives, even if they don’t know it yet. It’s true what they say, “It takes a village.” All of those summer practices, the long hours in the blazing sun were worth it. Whether you’re a parent in a hot car picking up or dropping off, or the actual students perfecting their craft. It takes our football team running plays in the rain, band members, student trainers, cheerleaders and drill team members, moms, dads, teachers, coaches, bus drivers, concession stand workers and a whole lot of orange t-shirts to make it all happen. Now, we’re ready…UNIFIED! We enjoy witnessing and documenting the fanfare and heritage that is Texas Football season and we’d like to thank all of you for your part in raising up another generation of Bobcats making football history. The Friday Night Lights are on, so let the show begin!!! Celina Proud,
Jason & Heat her Reynolds

CISD News
From the Desk of Rick DeMasters We are just three weeks into the new school year and it has been an AMAZING start! As we welcomed parents, students, and faculty back to school on that first day, you could feel the excitement in the air. From the elementary to the secondary campuses, we witnessed huge smiles on the faces of our students who were eager to see their teachers and friends. At the Annual “BooHoo WooHoo” Breakfast, the excitement continued to escalate as we welcomed new families to the district where they were able to meet representatives of not only our district but our city as well. Just as we were kicking off the new school year, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the new 2018 State Accountability Ratings for over 1,200 school districts throughout the State of Texas. The unveiling of this new system assigns letter grades to school districts using the AF accountability scale. Districts were rated based upon performance in three areas: Student Achievement This measures what students know and can do by the end of the school year. It takes into account AP and ACT results, College, Career, and Military Readiness indicators and results from state assessments covering all subject areas. School Progress It measures the progress students made on state assessments from one year to the next. It chooses districts with similar demographics and compares how their students are performing academically. Closing The Gaps This measures the academic performance to include socioeconomic factors when compared to racial/ethnic student groups. The letter grade was given to the district as a whole, but individual campuses will not receive letter grades until 2019. District campuses received one of the three ratings issued by the State of Texas. The ratings include: Met Standard, Met Alternative Standard, or Improvement Required. Celina ISD received an overall letter grade of an A. All of the Celina ISD campuses “Met Standard,” which is the highest rating that can be achieved. As you know, Celina ISD is extremely competitive in all things and we recognize the hard work accomplished by our students, faculty, and parents to achieve these high standards. The official school report card will not be finalized until the end of year and will be sent home with students with their report cards during the month of January 2019. While we celebrate these ratings, we are also conscious of the fact that it is just a snapshot of what we do on a particular day. Each and every day, our district is held accountable for the success of our students and that is why we strive to engage, connect and provide a learning environment that is not only rigorous and relevant to today’s world, but is creating leaders who will shape the future for years to come. 8 | September 2018 CELINA Magazine

A Good Man Makes A Good Bobcat
Bill Elliott: Celina Bobcat Athletic Director and Head Football Coach By Jodie Brownd
12 | September 2018 CELINA Magazine
C
oach Elliott makes his home in Celina, Texas with his wife Kathy. They have two sons, Nathan (21), who plays football for The University of North Carolina and Caleb (19), who is attending Fire School to become a Fireman.
he says in the way only a true Texas Football coach can say, “Well, HECK YEAH we’re GONNA WIN!!!” His confidence and response may make you laugh, but you can’t help but be convinced. After all, Celina is running 6-A numbers in a 4-A district.
Coach Elliott loves leading the Celina Bobcats for many reasons. One of the things he loves most about this town is the tradition… and he believes in the importance of maintaining that tradition while Celina grows. He says the support given from the community for every sport is unbelievable and the funds raised and the love from citizens and parents are second to none.
Coach Elliott believes that the key to success and raising good kids is submission. Everyone has to submit to someone which teaches humility. He says that as coaches, they don’t back down to expectations. Whether you’re talking grades or haircuts. “If I can’t trust you to cut your hair when asked, I probably can’t trust you to run a play on the 4th down either.”
He believes in the program and knows for a fact that it works. First and foremost, they’re raising good young men. He knows that if you teach character, integrity and responsibility to young men, they will naturally become the leaders that it takes to have a winning football team. Coach Elliott sums this philosophy up by saying, “As long as kids are where they’re supposed to be, doing what they’re supposed to be doing, the rest will take care of itself.” This philosophy has proven itself successful and is one of the main reasons that six of the current Bobcat coaches, who personally went through the Celina Athletic program, choose to coach here. In other words…don’t fix what isn’t broken.
Coach Elliott is proud to say that his list of role models includes his own father, who has always been very humble about his own athletic abilities. His father taught him the lesson every young man needs to learn about not giving up or quitting. He learned early on that all quitting does is make it easier to quit the next time and it’s best just to never let the habit take root. His list also includes Coach G.A. Moore and Coach Butch Ford who Elliott says have influenced his life as great examples of what it means to be a husband, father and coach.
“A good man makes a good Bobcat,” says Elliott. “We’re here to develop great young men, citizens and good leaders.” When asked what kind of team Celina has, he sums it up with, “In terms of character, sometimes you may not know for years what kind of team you had until the players come back home. When they come back with their wives and as fathers, as just good men, that’s when you know.” And when we asked if the Bobcats are going to win this year…
The institution that is Celina Bobcat Football and all that it implies is a no option, all or nothing mentality. What makes Celina successful is that there is still a UNIFIED goal of raising great kids. Coach Elliott is very committed to the effort it takes to be a winner and create winners. And aside from winning the State Championship, that’s the best goal you can make!

Keep the Main Thing, The Main Thing
Ben Aune: Director of Bands for Celina High School By Jodie Brownd
Ben Aune attended L.D. Bell High School, obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas and then acquired his Masters of Music in Winds from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. He makes his home here in Celina with his wife Lindsey and their children: Anderson (7), Adaline (5), and Abraham (2). It doesn’t take long to find out just exactly what makes Celina Band Director Ben Aune tick…it’s BAND! And you can’t have a conversation with him and not get excited about it too. He believes as much in band as he believes in any activity for young people. Contrary to popular belief, band kids are not all cookie cutter stereotypes. There are so many types of kids that play music, and whether the differences are cultural, physical, or age related, playing music and being part of a band program crosses all barriers. In most cases, participating in band ends up being the longest and largest project students will ever work on. The main thing they learn is how to work with a huge group of people and create something amazing. It is a philosophy that serves musicians well and can be applied in the work force or any facet of life. Through the process of creating music together, there’s a transformation in kids. Mr. Aune says, “Kids typically start off playing instruments very mechanically, but once they learn to 14 | September 2018 CELINA Magazine
surrender to the process, they suddenly leave that behind and focus on being musicians, on creating music. Band teaches fortitude and the rewards of sticking to a learning process that doesn’t always provide instant gratification but is ultimately a 12year commitment. In life, no matter who you are, you will hit a deficiency, whether physical or mental that you will have to work through. It’s a reward that you can only experience by sticking with it. You have to see the commitment through to get all that you are supposed to from the experience.” The 3 greatest reasons to join the band are: 1) It’s fun to play music with your friends. 2) It doesn’t matter if you are a cheerleader, an athlete, or an artist, you can have a home in band. 3) No matter what your background is or how different you think you are, every kid has a place where they belong. What is Mr. Aune’s Motto? Always Keep the Main Thing, The Main Thing, and the main thing is the kids. He encourages them to focus on the main goal which is to get as good as you can get in the amount of time you have to do it. He tells his students the same words of wisdom that he tells his own children about being honest with themselves. “It’s important to teach kids to diagnose their own performances and to teach systems on how to practice and how to prepare by diagnosing themselves.” He believes that the best of the best attack their own weaknesses and fix them.

gentle creek Mr. Aune took after his grandfather who was a WWII veteran turned musician and teacher. He tells the story of how his grandfather would get cigarettes as rations while on duty in France, and once the war was over, he decided to attend college. He found a passion for music after selling two packages of Lucky Strike cigarettes for opera tickets in Paris, and the rest is history. It was that performance that inspired him to study music and then teach it for 33 years. It was his grandfather’s legacy, as well as his own experience in band, that helped him realize that he wanted to give kids the great experience that he had. He had wonderful music educators that he knew really cared about him and about music. He speaks openly about being grateful to his mentors and considers himself lucky to have been surrounded by music educators like Steve Madsen and John Alstrin. When Benjamin Aune came on board as the Director of Bands in Celina, there were 31 kids on the roster. Today, just a little over a year later, there are 80! And someday soon, there will be students that become educators because they had a band director who saw something in them as musicians and who can openly say that they feel the exact same way about him.

Amariz Acosta & Julie Hall
Celina Bobcat Cheerleading Sponsors By Jodie Brownd
Amariz Acosta
Julie Hall
Amariz Acosta grew up in Midland, Texas. She attended Wayland University and played percussion in the band. Today, she is one of two cheerleading sponsors for the Celina Bobcats at Celina High School. Amariz says that she has assisted with the program for many years, as she was asked by Valerie Carey to join in 2006.
Julie Hall grew up in Sandy Springs, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia where she was a cheerleader and basketball player at her high school and was very involved with her church. She graduated from Auburn University where she was a War Eagle Girl her junior and senior year.
She loves the family atmosphere in Celina and the support that the students receive from their community. She also enjoys mentoring young ladies and teaching them life lessons that they will hopefully take with them after their high school careers. Amariz believes in coaching the girls in such a way that everyone’s individual strengths and talents can be utilized for the sake of the team and encourages them to always look for ways to improve. As a Coach, her hope is that she is always teaching them lifelong lessons. Her students and her cheerleaders hold a special place in her heart and there are many that have gone on to be successful after graduation. She loves it when they come back to visit her and loves hearing their success stories now as young adults. “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending” -C.S. Lewis
Julie has been a cheerleading coach in Celina ISD since 2009. She was the Junior High cheer coach and then transitioned to the Junior Varsity Coach. She recently agreed to Co-Coach the Varsity Cheer Team with Amariz Acosta. She loves the small town feel of Celina and how so many people dedicate hours upon hours of their time to make positive impacts on others. She believes that as coaches, their job is to try to teach the girls about the importance of teamwork, dedication and most importantly, how to be a leader. Being a cheerleader means being a leader no matter where you are, whether in the classroom, on the field or on social media. As a Junior High coach, she has had the honor of seeing so many of the girls grow and go on to cheer in high school and in college. She has established lifelong friendships with them and their families and loves watching them excel as young adults. She says that coaching high school girls is all about creating a common goal and pushing them to see what they are capable of achieving. “Do it with passion or don’t do it at all!”

s each year goes by, I always see new varieties of shrubs popping up at different growers. The ones that usually tend to catch my eye are colorful and natural looking. Remember, the more color you can design into your regular landscaping, the less your recurring costs are from planting tons of flowers! The more natural your shrubs are, the less maintenance required. However there a variety of ways to use shrubs in a landscape design, especially when the terrain or location is different from where you originally saw them. A number of shrubs grow and bloom in shade. They don’t require shade…they simply adapt to it better than other shrubs. Many shade-tolerant shrubs grow better when planted in sunnier locations. Shrubs can also direct traffic around property corners by keeping pedestrians on the sidewalk. Plantings in the front yard should not block drivers’ views of the street when cars are leaving the driveway.
the plants off within a few inches of the ground to rejuvenate the screen. Screens tend to look more natural and require less maintenance than hedges. Hedges provide privacy and create a thick barrier, but they have a high maintenance requirement. Some hedges need shearing two to four times a year to maintain a manicured appearance. A hedge gains 1 to 2 inches of growth at every shearing. Hedges are sheared to be wider at the bottom to prevent the bottom of the hedge from becoming bare of foliage. Most deciduous hedges are rejuvenated by cutting them back to within a few inches of the ground. Shrubs selected for a hedge must be tolerant of shearing. Here are the steps to follow when starting a hedge with young plants of deciduous shrubs. At planting, cut the plants to within 2 to 4 inches of the ground; then allow them to grow. The spacing of plants in a hedge depends on the plant used. Clip new growth
Like that shrub you see around the corner every day? Learn from a pro how to use it!
Many shrubs, especially those with thorns, can be used as a barrier to unwanted foot traffic. But consider the possibility of injury resulting from the use of those thorny shrubs. Always consider future possibilities when selecting a shrub. Pruning, maintaining or removing a planting of shrubs with thorns is difficult. An armed barrier plant should not be invasive. Species of rose are used effectively as barrier plants, but they spread rapidly and are difficult to get rid of. Hedges or screens of shrubs provide privacy. A hedge is clipped or sheared to keep it at some definite width and height. A screen grows to whatever height and width is normal for the plants making up the screen. Shrubs in screens should have a dense branching habit. Avoid those with a tendency to form large thickets of suckers. When shrubs lose the bottom branches, cut 18 | September 2018 CELINA Magazine
two to three times during the growing season to shape the hedge. Once the hedge shape is established, fewer trimmings are needed. Use string stretched along the hedge at the desired height as a shearing guide to maintain a uniform height. Do not shear the hedge after late summer when the plants are getting prepared for winter. Trees growing close together may create a mowing problem. A planting of shade-tolerant shrubs around the trees eliminates the need to mow around the trees, making mowing easier and protecting the trees from lawn mower injury. This type of planting ties the trees together in one mass and works best when the trees are fairly close together. A foundation planting need not consist of a solid row of shrubs.
A few carefully selected and placed shrubs can be more effective. Finding a shrub that will fit in the space allotted to it at maturity should not be difficult. Shrubs can also be used as ground covers. Like other ground covers, they should be adapted to conditions found in the growing area. Usually these are great to use as a second or lower tiers in your landscaping. Always educate yourself on all of the growth habit and mature sizes of the shrubs you’re planning to use. I have been to many clients’ homes where 5 to 10 years ago they planted this little tiny shrub from Home Depot they knew absolutely nothing about only to find out the hard way they can now no longer get in the front entry of their home due to this monstrosity that has grown up and blocked every possible access! Question: Jimmie, what do you consider the best tree for me to plant in a low, wet area on my property? I really would like some shade there, however I have killed 3 nice Red Oak trees trying. Any thoughts? I really appreciate your time. Ty L. in Celina Answer: Hi Ty. I can see why you might have run into problems with your previous efforts. Red Oaks are notoriously known for not liking “wet feet”. We always plant them “high” or on the top of root ball at grade level. A few varieties of trees we even add a 3-5” base of gravel for extra drainage. A much better option for your unique situation would be a Bald Cypress or River Birch tree. Both will thrive with wet feet. Growth rates are similar, but foliage is way different as well as overall canopy so check them both out. Hope this helps. Until next time…Happy Gardening!!

dehydrated during colder months. Regardless if it’s hot or cold outside, children (and adults) need proper hydration during active play. Make sure you pack plenty of water!
Some of our fondest memories as children center around days spent at the local playground. At Kiddie Academy of Prosper, we spend a lot of time outdoors, especially during the summer, and we encourage families to extend that into the evenings and weekends. For many families, this includes a trip to the community playground.
Safety First First aid kits are not always available on or near the playground. Keep your own fully-stocked first aid kit, including an emergency contact card, at all times when you go outside or take walks. Have access to important phone numbers in the event of an emergency or in the unforeseen circumstance that something may happen to you.
In this month’s article, I’m sharing helpful tips for planning a safe and fun day of play at your community playground. Safety Over Style Properly dress for the weather conditions, but in case the weather turns fickle, be sure to keep extra weather appropriate items on hand. Leave an extra hat, gloves, and other winter gear in the car just in case it gets chillier than you anticipated. In the transitioning months, it’s best to dress in layers. While summer sandals are stylish, adorable, and easy to slip on, active outdoor play with inappropriate shoes (such as sandals) often lead to toe and foot injuries. Select a shoe that covers your child’s foot completely and can support their active play. Hydration There is a common misconception that you cannot get 20 | September 2018 CELINA Magazine
Protection from the Elements Plan on outdoor time daily, temperature permitting. Protect your child from the elements by applying sunscreen (even on cloudy days) and look for a shady spot. Protection from the elements also includes long sleeve shirts, hats, and coats. Take a Look Around Do a quick but thorough visual check to ensure that the area is safe when you enter a playground, even if it is one you are familiar with. In addition to visually inspecting all of the equipment, make sure that nothing unexpected or hazardous has been left behind or deposited in that area since your last visit (items thrown or blown over the fence, dropped or forgotten items, etc.).

Community
After almost two years since it was established, the Celina Police Association has made its mark on the Celina community. Like most 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, the Celina Police Association depends on donations from the public at large to fund their programs. Programs such as their Scholarship Fund, which in 2018 provided over $5,000 to local students to assist with college and educational programs, and their Officer Down Fund, which also provided $5,000 to a local law enforcement officer’s family after he was shot and killed in the line of duty. While the Celina Police Association is happy to accept donations, they make every attempt to reach the community in fun and innovative ways to raise the money necessary to keep growing. “We want people to have fun and get to know the officers who protect and serve them while showing their support. We continue to look for ways raise money that make people enjoy supporting the Association,” said Detective Jeremiah Phillips, President of the Celina Police Association. In 2017, the Association introduced Dunk a Cop, a way for children to meet Celina’s finest while getting to have a little fun with the dunk tank, at Celina’s Parkfest and again in 2018 at Celina’s Splash & Blast. Further, in 2018, the Association offered citizens the opportunity to play their hand against some of Major League Baseball’s greats in a Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament, which we detailed in a prior issue of CELINA Magazine. Now the Association has come up with another great way for you to get out there and have some fun. On October 13th, 2018, the Association will be having a Cornhole Tournament at Celina’s Oktoberfest on the Historic Downtown Square. Like with all of their events, the Association went above and beyond to ensure this event is a success and everyone has a great time. “Using Oktoberfest as a venue allows for participants to drink, eat, and enjoy music and other festivities while in between games and throughout the day,” states Detective Phillips. 22 | September 2018 CELINA Magazine
The Association even came up with custom cornhole board designs. The cost for the tournament is $50 per team (plus entry to Oktoberfest) and might also be considered a tax-deductible donation. The Association looks to have anywhere from 50 to 75 teams sign up. The first-place team is to receive $250 cash and their pick of one set of the three custom boards. The secondplace team will receive their choice of the remaining two custom boards. Sign up today at facebook.com/CelinaPoliceAssociation to ensure your spot is reserved!
