From The Desk of Rick DeMasters
T
he month of October reminds us that the oppressive heat of summer is but a distant memory. If you live in Texas, this may or may not be a true statement. We have witnessed Mother Nature not be very accommodating over the last few weeks, causing everything from lightning delays to the cancellation of games and evening activities altogether. Our CISD Athletic Department seems to have minored in meteorology - becoming astute at tracking weather patterns to predict the possibility of changes to our district schedule. We hope with the coming of Fall, that the weather will create less of a distraction to our extracurricular events. Bobcat Homecoming is scheduled for Friday, October 5th and signals our first Early Release day for the district. If you have never experienced a Bobcat Homecoming Parade, you are in for a treat! The town square will be transformed into a vision of orange and white with colorful floats, cheerleaders, drill team members, football players, the sounds of our Bobcat band, and our Homecoming Court and Queen nominees waving to the crowd. Once the parade is over, a pep rally will start to cheer on our Bobcats as they get set to take on Paris North Lamar that evening at Bobcat Stadium. The month of October will also be host to two, 3-day weekends for our students. October 8th and 22nd are scheduled as student holidays. Our faculty and staff will be attending professional development and will also be using this time for Parent/Teacher conferences. It seems that we only just started this school year, but October 19th is the end of the first 9-week period. The first report cards for the year are scheduled to go out on October 26th. The end of the month our district will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week with the 2018 theme, “Life Is Your Journey, Travel Drug Free!!” Our campuses will be supporting this national prevention campaign with theme days to encourage our students to always say no to drugs. Once the theme days have been finalized, the information will be posted to our website and Facebook pages for all to participate. Last, but not least, the CHS Theater Department will again be hosting “Nightmare on the Hill,” for those that love to experience the chills and thrills of a “Haunted House!” This ghoulish event will be held on Saturday, October 27th, starting at 7:00pm. Walkthroughs will start about every twenty-five minutes. Tickets are only $5.00, or you can fast pass for $10.00, with proceeds benefiting our Theatre Department. For parents of young children, scary scenes and strobe lights will be in use during the event. If you have any questions regarding Nightmare on the Hill, please contact Cynthia Baker with the CHS Theatre Department. It seems that the calendar starts to fill with more and more events as we progress through the school year. Before we know it, the month of October will become a distant memory. And, just like a good book, we will turn the page to a new chapter, abounding with opportunities for our students and community events that showcase what a special place we are blessed to call home!

CELINA FAMILY DENTISTRY
In 2007, Dr. Ganjoor Graduated with honors from Texas A&M Dental School in Dallas Texas, previously known as Baylor College of Dentistry. Dr. Ganjoor, also known as “Dr. G” by her patients, keeps up with the latest dental practices as well as the most modern dental technology and equipment in her practice by taking hundreds of hours of continuing education classes per year. Celina Family Dentistry is privately owned and operated by Dr. Ganjoor. She says, “Our goal at Celina Family Dentistry is to provide the best quality dental care to our patients in a most comfortable, up to date and state of art dental office.” Dr. Ganjoor makes her home in Celina with her husband, their son and 3 dogs. She says, “Celina Family Dentistry is where patients become part of our extended family. Our staff members are friendly, knowledgeable and more than happy to go out of their way to help and accommodate their patients.” The front desk staff, which includes Amanda, Nancy and Farrah, all do a fantastic job at making patients comfortable and putting them at ease. Dr. Ganjoor says, “According to our patients, who visit our office on a regular basis, our hygienist Rachel is known as the most gentle and thorough dental hygienist ever.” The experts at Celina Family Dentistry specialize in all aspects of dental care, including but not limited to biannual dental cleaning and checkup x-rays, periodontal therapy, extractions, wisdom teeth extractions, teeth replacement options, fillings, crowns and bridges. They also offer implant placements and restorations, over dentures and partials, cosmetic dentistry and professional life long whitening options in addition to Fast Braces, and clear aligners, they screen and treat their patients with obstructive sleep apnea and other forms of breathing related sleep disorders. “What sets us apart at Celina Family Dentistry is our passionate care and love for dentistry which enables us to always put our patient’s comfort and needs first. We give our patients individualized personal care according to their own specific dental needs. We also have flexible hours as early as 7:00am to as late as 6:00pm which enables us to accommodate patients
with different lifestyles. We are also open one Saturday a month to accommodate our patients who are unable to come in during weekdays.” Of course, like any other practice, Dr. Ganjoor and her staff want to be able to provide dental care to as many patients as possible. They have the capacity to grow and provide dental care to all newcomers, but they never intend to lose their personal touch with patients no matter how big they become. “Our goal is to provide the highest quality of dental care to our patients. We strive to provide preventative and educational measures to all patients with the highest ethical standards to improve the quality of not just oral health but their overall health and help them to improve the quality of their life. We treat our patients the same way we would like to be treated.” When asked why Dr. Ganjoor chose the dental field as her profession, she spoke of a time when she was 9 years old and her parents took her to the dentist for the very first time because she had a crooked front tooth. Rather than offering orthodontic treatment to align the crooked tooth, he recommended just extracting it. “My parents did not know any better, they trusted a professional’s opinion. So, my perfectly healthy, cavity-free tooth was pulled and of course there was no other tooth replacing it for many years, because it was one of my permanent teeth. Throughout my teenage years, I was very self-conscious about my smile because of that missing front tooth. I was young enough to where implant was not an option and even it was, my parents could not afford it,” says Dr. Ganjoor. Encountering such a bad personal experience early on in life enlightened her to pursue Dentistry as a career. “I wanted to provide my patients with proper recommendations regarding their dental care. When I went to dental school, I was able to get orthodontic treatment and get a dental implant to replace my missing tooth to enhance my smile.” Because of her own personal experience, she knows firsthand how our smiles can affect our self-esteem and confidence. Getting proper dental care and creating a healthy oral environment not only helps us have a healthier mouth and body, it can also be a life changing experience.

Right Where She Belongs: Coach Ginger Murray, Girls Athletic Coordinator and Head Volleyball Coach By Jodie Brownd
Coach Ginger Murray grew up in Iowa Park, Texas. She attended college on a sports scholarship at The University of Nebraska. Upon graduation, she coached at several schools including Liberty Hill, Seymore, Archer City, Sweetwater, and Jim Ned. But, when Coach Murray was called to interview at Celina ISD, she said she knew it just felt right. She loved the hometown feel and especially the abundant common courtesy, which adds to the small-town values that are important to her while raising two daughters here. Coach Murray immediately felt at home in Celina and was humbled that Coach Elliott believed in her, calling her the woman for the job! Everyone gets along here in Celina and has the same goal of raising great kids. Hers are no different and it brings a smile to her face to wake up excited about going to work every day. Her girls, Sage (15) and Kinsey (12), are excited about school and their friends. “It’s almost as if we’ve always lived here,” she says. Murray knows a thing or two about encouraging her team. She spoke of a girl at Jim Ned that was afraid to try out for basketball. Coach Murray took the time to speak positive words over her and taught her the important lesson of “giving yourself a chance.” That same girl DID try out for the team and started on Varsity the very next year. She even went on to play college ball. Sometimes all it takes is the right word at the right time to make a huge difference in a young person’s life. A mentor of Coach Murray’s once told her that to be a good coach, you had to be a balance beam of sorts. That you always have to outweigh your correction and improvement with positive reinforcement. She is often told that her players are happy playing for her, which comes across on the field and court. Will and desire are things that you can’t coach…athletes either want to play or they don’t. And it’s easy to see that hers do! When asked who she looks up to, there’s not a second of thought before she tells you that the reason she is successful, and the reason she has made it through hard times, is because of Jesus Christ. This single mother of two young girls has found a safe haven and a home here in Celina and she knows that it was part of God’s plan all along. “Trusting God is like putting a puzzle together,” she says. “Sometimes we don’t see where the pieces fit and or how they’re going to come together but if you sit back, have faith and let God work you’ll always end up in the place you’re supposed to be.” That place for Coach Ginger Murray is Celina, Texas and we are all blessed to have her in the lives of our children.

Running Home for Good By Jodie Brownd
school athletes into impressive collegiate competitors and then even into as coaches themselves, has made it all worthwhile.
Celina’s Cross Country Coach Eric Krepps knows many things about a plethora of topics…and family, coaching, basketball and cross country are at the very top of the list. There isn’t a sport he hasn’t played or coached. And having grown up in Michigan, he comes from a long background of athletes. He played football, basketball and ran cross country during high school. After suffering a broken hip injury during his junior year that took him out of basketball, he landed in track and cross country as a senior. While recovering from his injury, he experienced a shifting of his focus to the importance of good rehab, which led him to a concentration in Exercise Science and a Bachelor of Science and Education Degree at Lake Superior University.
When asked about his favorite players, he says there are too many to name. All of them have a special place in his heart. He is proud to say that during his time coaching basketball in Yuma, Arizona, he had athletes like Regina Brown – who he says in now in the Air Force; Britney Garcia – who led their team to State three years in a row and eventually coached with him. He also mentions a young lady named Amanda Garcia – who went on to play Varsity Golf and Track at Lake Superior State. He and his wife invested in these young ladies and he believes that the family aspect of sports has contributed to their success and to his. It’s about creating a big family, which is exactly the thought process that confirms that Celina, Texas is his home.
Coach Krepps and his wife Julie make their home in Celina with their daughter Regina “Reggie.” He is sentimental when he talks about his days back in cooler weather. He speaks about his life growing up in Coopersville, Michigan, with a close family bond. He was a Boy Scout, an Eagle Scout and grandson to a very special lady that is his biggest supporter…his grandmother, Mary Jean Mengel, who he proudly says will be 93 years old in December. His parents still make their home in Michigan and will be celebrating their 46th wedding anniversary. He has one brother, 3 years his elder, who he describes as just “One Big Awesome Guy.” Some of his best memories include going to his family’s cottage in Canada, a family tradition and vacation home since 1962.
Celina athletes have been able to experience competition outside of their home state alongside Coach Krepps. He and his wife took the girls basketball team to Florida for a Holiday tournament last year and they played teams from California, Kentucky and Florida. Krepps is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to sports and leadership, but it is his love of family, tradition and integrity that flows over into his work that has made the difference in his students and in the lives of those athletes he’s impacted.
He and his wife love to travel and have an affection for all things Disney. He has run in 5 Disney-themed marathons and even proposed to his wife at Disneyworld in 2013. He believes that travel is a great way to learn and that’s why he has a history of traveling with his athletes to competitions. He explains that it is the family dynamic in his own life that has led to his successful career as a coach. Getting to know his teams and athletes individually, while watching them grow from young and green high
14 | October 2018 WeAreCELINA.com
There is no place Coach Krepps would rather be than Celina. He says there is so much about it that reminds him of his days growing up and he’d like to duplicate that for his own daughter. The kids, the coaches, the parents and the community all share the same goal and that is to raise great kids in a phenomenal town and he’s happy to say that he’s home for good. When he talks about his plans for this season, he can’t help but notice the past State Champions on the wall at Celina High School. His dream is to put another one on that wall in whatever sport he can. “My job is to build relationships with kids, and if I do my job, those athletes will go on to do great things.”
Always Be Prepared and Prepare for the Unpredictable By Jodie Brownd
Kyle Sheridan graduated from Tom Bean High School as the student trainer in 2002. He attended The University of Texas in Arlington and graduated with a bachelor’s in athletic training in 2006 and earned his master’s in Education Administration in 2015. Kyle and his wife Jenna make their home here in Celina with their 4-year-old daughter Presley. Sheridan has always loved being a part of the sports program and knew that a career with a medical and sports combination would be perfect for him. He says that the best part of being a trainer is caring for the kids. He gets his share of concerned mothers when athletes hit about 7th Grade, but by the time they’re seniors, he has gained their trust for the most part. His motto is “Always be prepared and prepare for the unpredictable.” It’s a saying that serves athletes well on the field and in life in general. He says that with minor injuries, the goal is to get the athlete back on the field as soon as possible, but that his job is never to risk injuring a kid further. He always does what is best for each individual athlete on a case by case basis. Obviously, the goal in Celina is to win football games… but first and foremost, always keeping the safety of the players in mind. When asked about his most memorable time out on the field, he told the story of a player everyone remembers by the name of Charlie Waldnip. He was running in for a touchdown and jumped over several players to make the play and ended up falling directly on his neck. Charlie’s father Kent, who is a legend in football himself, suffered a paralyzing injury when he played in college against Alabama. When his son fell, the entire crowd went silent. At first, Charlie couldn’t move, but a few tense minutes later, Sheridan looked up into the stands and directly into the eyes of a concerned father and gave him a smile and thumbs up to let him know that his son was going to be just fine. “There’s no better place to raise or work with kids than Celina, Texas,” Kyle says. “There’s a spirit in this town that can’t be described or duplicated, only FELT, by the love and support of a community that supports us in every way.”

There are many benefits and opportunities for personal growth as a Las Gatita. Being a part of a team teaches the young ladies the importance of being a part of something bigger than themselves… it teaches self-discipline and the importance of setting and achieving goals alongside friends that become like family.
Keep Looking Up By Jodie Brownd
K
elly Babb grew up in Celina and comes from a long line of Celina Natives. If you’ve been here for any amount of time, you know her, as her passion and team spirit is difficult to harness. She just so happens to be the Office Manager at Celina High School and has been the Leader of a not so little group of young ladies called the Las Gatitas for 14 years. She makes a great leader because she’s an inspiring person and an expert drill team instructor because, well, she wore the Las Gatitas uniform herself! She and her husband Frank met at The University of North Texas when she was a freshman and he was a football player in his junior year. They fell head over heels for each other, married and now have 4 boys: Josh, Eli, Zach and Brock, all of which grew up in the safe Celina den playing Bobcat football. Mrs. Babb loves Celina because of the community and how everyone really cares about each other. She appreciates the fact that the town is very faith-based, as she gives credit to God as her inspiration in every area of her life, but especially in raising her own boys saying, “They are who they are because of Him.” She makes no bones about the importance of her faith and tradition, having started a few of her own as the coach of Las Gatitas. She implemented the tradition of ending each practice in prayer, to send the girls away with a covering and on a unified front. She also incorporated the quote “Keep looking up because that’s where it all is” as the Las Gatitas’ team motto. Babb says that the most difficult part of her job is having to cut girls if they aren’t where they need to be for the week of performances. It is standard practice for each team member to audition individually for two dances each week to be performed at the game and pep rally. She says, “We would not be doing the team or the girls any favors by sending them out on the field unprepared to perform.” What people may not know about the Las Gatitas Team is that they spend hours upon hours practicing and choreographing their own dances. Not only do they win competitions for their talents across Texas, they also host an annual competition right here in Celina to raise funds for their team.
16 | October 2018 WeAreCELINA.com
There have been many young ladies that have made an impact on Mrs. Babb’s life, but it is one recently that she can’t help but mention when she recollects the reasons why she continues to lead the Las Gatitas. She speaks of a girl named Tessa, who she says as a Freshman wanted to quit the team. She had trouble doing the splits and had been cut for a couple of performances. She learned a big life lesson about not giving up and the fact that she didn’t throw in the towel back then has earned her a position on the team this year, as Social Officer as a Junior. “Tessa has blossomed and grown so much in the past two years, and it has really been an honor and a highlight in my career to see.” At a recent competition, Tessa was awarded “Most Inspiring” and the hosts of the competition, parents and Babb were most impressed with the fact that Tessa took it upon herself to make an announcement and thank her team members for voting for her – something no girl had ever done at the competition. It’s difficult to hold in your emotions when you see a young lady learn and grow from a frustrated freshman to a leader on her team and in her community. It is stories and memories like this that motivate her to remain as the coach of this team because she realizes the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the girls whose growth and maturity she has the privilege of witnessing. “I’m impressed by how much ownership the girls take on the team and how, on or off the field, they depend on one another.” She has an opendoor policy and is always willing and available to talk to her girls no matter what the topic may be. “Whether they’re having family or boyfriend troubles or just need a word of encouragement, I try to be there for them and it’s when you’re invited to their weddings or are visited by them when they come home from college that you realize the part you played in their lives. It’s such an honor to get to be a light in their life in that way.” Kelly Babb is passing the torch, just like the torch was passed to her. Not just from the standpoint of drill team or being a coach…she’s passing the torch from generation to generation, raising her own young men along with an entire generation of Las Gatitas and now makes her name as Grandma with her grandchildren who are also the next generation of Celina greatness. When asked about what she is most proud of, she names them one by one: Brooklyn, Easton, Cave, Maren and brand new, as of last month, Paxton. Yes, she wears many hats in this town and inspires us by proving that whether you’re managing a busy high school office, raising four boys, chasing grandkids or coaching a drill team, it is important to keep the faith, keep family close, and always keep looking up, because that’s where it all is.

Celina High School Veterans Day Celebration 2018 By Jill Roza
The definition of a veteran could be summed up as, the bravest are those with the clearest vision of what lies before them, whether it be glory or danger and still sacrificially serve and defend their country. Two years ago, Celina High School hosted their first Veterans Day celebration and each year since, the event has continued to grow into a program filled with gratitude and honor for those that have and are currently serving our great country. The excitement is building for this year’s event and you will want to be in attendance for what is going to be an amazing day!
To our Celina ISD Families and Community members, we invite you to the program starting at 10:15am in the Celina High School Auditorium. Our CHS award-winning band and choir students will also be performing for the program. It is truly an honor to be able to host this special event each year to show our appreciation for our veterans. We take this day to celebrate and honor the brave and selfless American soldiers and their families that through their service have provided us with the opportunity to live freely in the United States of America.
Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 8th for the Celina High School Veterans Day Celebration. Doors will open at 8:00am. Breakfast will be served starting at 9:00am, followed by a community wide program starting promptly at 10:15am. Last year’s event hosted more than two hundred veterans from not only the North Texas area, but from neighboring states as well. “Save The Date” cards have been sent to those that attended last year.
Let’s pack the gymnasium on November 8th to show our support for our Heroes and Sheroes and honor their dedication to our country. For more information, please contact Celina ISD Director of Communications Jill Roza at 469.742.9100.
It is extremely important to not only our district, but to our students that they witness and are able to see examples of what courage, leadership, and sacrifice truly mean. If you, a family member or friend served and/ or currently serving, we invite you and your family to attend this special celebration in your honor. For those that have attended in the past, we have added some surprises to the agenda that you will not want to miss!

Fall Weather Planting!
is
Perfect
for
weeds, as the absorption process is relatively slow. Avoid the temptation to cut back weeds before the process is complete or you’ll prevent the glyphosate reaching the roots.
Crisp, cool mornings…perfect “sleeping weather” at night…pumpkin everything, everywhere…plant catalogs and landscaping “how to” books piling up on the coffee table…it must be Fall! This is my favorite time of the year for so many reasons, not just the wonderful weather. This is that special time of year when we prepare and plant now, anticipating a wonderful spring and summer a few months in the future. Let’s take a look at four areas pertinent to the season: pruning, weed control, budgeting and tree selection.
Products like Roundup work best when the ambient temperature is still fairly warm, so don’t wait too long to attack your weeds. Check the weather forecast, too, and avoid applying just before a rain shower which would wash it off. If you prefer not to use chemicals, you can of course use a small gardening fork or trowel and carefully remove all the offending weeds by hand.
Pruning
It’s a good idea to devote some thought to how much you can comfortably invest in your landscape this season. And yes, it is an investment that will pay off next spring and probably for years ahead. Do some comparison shopping to find a good balance between price and quality. Your landscaping professional can always help with some great ideas that fit your lifestyle as well as your budget! As a general rule of thumb a great landscape around your property is equal to about 10% of the home’s value. You will most likely exceed that number in return on investment if you decide to sell down the road.
The end of summer and the very beginning of fall is a good time for some gentle pruning. Note the emphasis on the word “gentle”. Careful shaping of trees and shrubs can be tackled right now, but this isn’t the time to do an “Edward Scissorhands” with those pruning shears! In a useful online article originated by the Office of Agricultural Communications at Mississippi State University, Norman Winter, horticulture specialist with the University’s Extension Service, says, “Extensive [fall] pruning could generate too much succulent growth and an early freeze could then damage the plant. It is better to do major pruning just before spring while the plants are still dormant.” Weed control A friend of mine told me that he doesn’t believe in getting rid of weeds. “If I killed off all weeds and broadleaf,” he said, “I wouldn’t have anything green at all to look at!” If you said “amen” then maybe you can skip this section, but for the rest of us, this is a good time to apply a systemic weed killer such as Roundup, the chemical name for which is glyphosate. Actively-growing weeds absorb the glyphosate through their leaves and suck it down to the roots. It can take a couple of weeks to totally kill the

Trees As you make your fall selections, don’t forget about trees! Truly, trees are an investment in so many ways. They can shade your home from summer sun and protect it from icy winter winds. They reduce soil erosion and help to lower your utility bills. When it comes time to move, carefully chosen trees create “curb appeal” for would-be buyers and increase the value of your property. Summer blooming trees like crape myrtles and vitex respond well to a deadhead-type pruning. Removing spent flowers and seed heads often generates new growth and another round of blossoms. If you’d like some of my personal recommendations for trees you might want to select, send
me an e-mail with a few basic details about your location, etc, and I’ll get back to you with some ideas. Other Fall Tips Despite the warm temperatures, now is an ideal time to plant many flowers. It is not too late to enjoy one more round of summer annuals, such as marigolds and zinnias, before planting cool season plants like pansies, violas, kale, cabbage, cyclamen, primrose and snapdragons for winter. The fall is when perennials such as irises, daylilies, amaryllises, shasta daisies and purple coneflowers should be dug and divided. Winter said the general rule of thumb is to divide plants in the season opposite their bloom. Dividing serves at least two purposes: it will provide you with more plants to enjoy and it will increase the plants’ blooming ability. Winter recommended sowing wildflower seeds, such as larkspur, purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan and liatris, now for next year’s bloom. They will germinate this fall and bloom next spring.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS By: Rosh Ramanujam
Halloween can be such a fun time for children. At Kiddie Academy® of Prosper, we want your children to remember it as a time of fun with family and friends. There’s no trick to making your Halloween a treat. It simply takes planning and good parenting to ensure it’s a safe and healthy experience for everyone. Here are a few tips to help. Make sure your child has a safe costume. Since many Halloween activities take place after dark, you want to make sure your child is easy to see by motorists. Most store-bought costumes have reflective materials built in. If it doesn’t or the costume is homemade, you can add reflective tape to it. Children can also carry glow sticks or flashlights to make it easier to see them. The costume should fit properly so that it’s not so long that the child could trip and so that their vision isn’t obscured by the mask or a wig. And, of course, make sure the costume is flame resistant. Respect your child’s fear. For most children, Halloween means fun and candy. But with all the ghosts, witches and monsters going door to door, masks and costumes can be sources of fear and anxiety, especially for younger children. Masks and makeup obscure facial expressions, so it’s especially hard for toddlers to tell if someone is mean or friendly. If a child gets scared, don’t force them to confront their fear or shame them for their feelings. It could make the situation worse in the long run. Provide adult supervision. Whether it’s handling the jack-o’-lantern carving duty or going door to door with your trick-or-treater, being an involved Halloween parent helps

ensure your child stays safe. Children under 12 should be accompanied on their rounds by an adult. Make sure your home is safe for Halloween visitors – well-lit, cleared of anything a child could trip over and that pets are kept indoors or on a leash. Make it a healthy Halloween. For many, the treats are the highlight of Halloween. But, as with most good things, moderation matters. If you can get your child to eat a good meal before trick-or-treating, it helps discourage them from filling up on candy. Have children wait until they get home before sorting and eating the candy. And don’t let them eat it all at once. Be respectful of food allergies, both for your children and others. Look through your child’s candy for anything they’re allergic to. And for the treats at your house, think about passing out non-candy treats such as coloring books to any visitors you might have who have allergies. Making good choices at Halloween mirrors our core philosophy at Kiddie Academy of Prosper. We empower your children to make great choices by giving them opportunities throughout their day. We’ll engage your child by turning moments of interaction at home and school into key moments of learning. Maintaining this consistency from the classroom to the playground and your home will have a positive impact on their life. I’m Rosh R, the owner of Kiddie Academy of Prosper, located at 650 North Preston Road. We are excited to open our brand-new, state-of-the-art academy in the Fall of 2018 in the Prosper community. We serve children ages 6 weeks through 12 years. The educational programs at Kiddie Academy of Prosper emphasize continuous, open communication between teachers and parents concerning each child’s development. But most importantly, we learn while we’re having fun. We invite children to embark on the Kiddie Academy journey that will enable them to learn and grow socially, physically and intellectually.
