What an INCREDIBLE Semester! We want to welcome GUNTER Magazine to our community and I thought sharing a little bit about our first semester would be a great way to kick-off the GISD spotlight of this magazine! We came into the 2018-19 school year with BIG dreams! After winning the State Championship in football in 2016, being named a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School and winning a National Championship in FFA in 2018, we truly believed that “The Best is Yet to Come” for Gunter ISD! This past semester has already lived up to those words with our athletic teams having a banner semester: State Semi-Finalist in Football, Regional Finalists in Volleyball, a State Qualifier in Cross Country and 6th place at UIL State Cheer! Not to mention our boys & girls basketball teams who look to be playoff-bound already. We also signed five athletes to compete at the collegiate level in football, basketball and softball! In the Fine Arts, we launched a brand new Art program in grades 7-12 and our students are already producing showcase-worthy work. In the performing arts, our Middle School Students won multiple recognitions for their One Act Play. In our music programs, we advanced 11 students to the Area Competition for Choir and 4 students to the Area Competition for Band. And we advanced a record-number of 3 students to the elite AllState Choir and 1 student as an Alternate for All-State Band! While our success in extracurricular programs is a highlight for many of our students and families, the focus on academic performance has been the key for decades in Gunter ISD! This past year our 64 graduates earned over $2.5 million in scholarships & awards sending our graduates all over the country including Duke University, University of Texas, Oregon State University & Baylor University. This year we already have recognized 2 students who earned National Merit Scholarship honors, had one student accepted to MIT and another who won the Presidential Scholarship at Austin College. This focus on academics starts early and we were excited to launch Academic UIL teams from Gunter Elementary.

Leadership and integrity are character traits we focus on in Gunter ISD and it was exciting to see three of our students earn the prestigious Eagle Scout rank for the Boy Scouts and another student about to complete the final steps to earn the Gold Award for Girl Scouts. Our FFA students are deep into their competition season and have already won numerous awards in speaking and judging. GISD also had the very first Path to Plate Ambassador representing Texas. And probably the best indicator of the kind of semester we’ve had in Gunter ISD is last week’s mid-year update from the UIL on the best schools in Texas – and Gunter is sitting in 1st place for 3A schools! We’re looking forward to a GREAT rest of the year! Congratulations to our students and staff on the incredible accomplishments we’ve had already!

Congratulations to Ethan Everson! He officially signed his National Letter of Intent to play football next year at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Oklahoma. Everson is one of 42 studentathletes who made their intentions know to play for the Rangers. Sixteen of those athletes come from Texas, 3 from Kansas and 23 from the state of Oklahoma. Northwestern Oklahoma State University is a Division II school who plays in the Great American Conference. The Ranger Football program is lead by Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Matt Walter. Best of luck to Ethan, his parents Eric and Michelle, and all of his family as they prepare for the next stage in his football and academic career! We will be supporting you all the way‌Ride Rangers Ride!!

Cheer, like most extracurricular activities, is a year-round commitment. Gone are the days of sign-up, try-out for the student body, write a check, and cheer exclusively for the boys of fall. Cheer is a sport – a competitive sport. Four years ago, the UIL created the State Spirit Championships, and it is held every January. Downtown Fort Worth is the perfect place for the venue! Gunter High School dipped their toes in the water three years ago and quickly learned there is more to the event than putting an athletic team on the mat. The sport requires precision, strategy, elements and risk – these components must work together like a well-oiled machine or it will put you right out of the competition. A select group seemed to have it figured out and dominated the Top 10 each year. This year the Gunter High School Cheer Team, by virtue of a fast start in the prelims, roared into the State Finals, the Top 10, and only fractions away from the podium with a sixth-place finish. The top three consists of schools with Division I enrollment for Football. Only Jacksboro, in fourth place, boasts attendance comparable to Gunter, and thus the Lady Tiger Cheer Team ranked second among schools competing in Division II. Jacksboro finished a mere .35 points ahead of the Tigers. Jacksboro and Gunter are the only schools with Division II enrollment in the Top 10. The larger classifications split their championships into two divisions. Worth noting is the demands of a cheer program during the football season. Our senior cheerleaders cheered in fifty-eight football games during their high school career. That is the equivalent of almost six regular seasons. We estimated they planned more than forty pep rallies in that time period. Many of these girls also volunteered to perform in home volleyball and basketball games, in addition to playoffs. A number of them the last two years pulled double duty as JV Cheerleaders and members of the State team. From October through the State Football

championships, our girls prepared for pep rallies, games, and perfected their State Cheer routines. Often our cheerleaders are the first asked to serve as ambassadors of the campus at teacher convocations or community functions. Over 150 members of the student body, parents, and community attended a cheer showcase a few days before State. This show of support was the first public event held in the new strength and conditioning facility. Two days later, a similar crowd descended upon the Fort Worth Convention Center to offer support. The girls had their own “cheering” section. Their performance earned one more point in the 3A Lone Star Cup rankings, which should catapult Gunter High School to sole possession of first place in the standings at the time of print. We salute the coaches, sponsors, and parents that sacrifice time and resources to support our cheerleaders. We appreciate our one competition team that serves others before self.
TIGERS BASKETBALL The Gunter Tigers have had a very successful season so far, finishing 3rd in district behind Pottsboro and Whitesboro. Their overall record is 15-9 and 6-4 in district play. Led by only 3 seniors, Coach Scott’s team is still fairly young. Leading the team in scoring is senior Kobe Hunter (#4), averaging 21 points per game. Senior Clay Lemmons (#10) leads the team in rebounds (8) and blocks (3) per game. And topping the charts in assists (3) and steals (6) per game is junior Zander Turner (#20). We look forward to supporting the Tigers on their playoff run! Playoff Dates: Bi-District: February 18-19 Area: February 21-23 Regional Quarterfinals: February 25-26 Regional Semifinals: March 1 Regional Finals: March 2 State Tournament: March 7-9
LADY TIGERS BASKETBALL The Lady Tigers finished their regular season at 3rd district, just behind Pottsboro and Ponder. Their record going into the playoffs was 19-7 overall and 7-5 in district. Gunter faces Van Alstyne in the Bi-District game on Monday, February 11. When they met earlier this season, the Lady Tigers fell to the Panthers 50-58, so you can be sure that Gunter is going to come out on fire! Statistically, Gunter has scored more points this season than Van Alstyne, so it should be a great game. Let’s all go show our support for the Lady Tigers and pack the house at McKinney North HS!! Playoff Dates: Bi-District Game on February 11: Gunter vs. Van Alstyne: 6:30pm at McKinney North HS Area: February 14-16 Regional Quarterfinals: February 18-19 Regional Semifinals: February 22 Regional Finals: February 23 State Tournament: February 28-March 2

In His Presence “We love because he first loved us” - 1John 4:19 By Pastor Roy Layman
February brings Valentine’s Day, a day set aside to express “love.” For at least one day, mushy greeting cards, fresh cut flowers, chocolates, and stuffed teddy bears will be in high demand. But while the holiday is fun, most all would agree that real love is more than token sentiments on a given day. Real love requires long-term commitment, faithfulness, and sacrifice. Real love is both beautiful and messy, it exists in the mountain top experiences, and through the difficult valleys. Real love is hard to find and even harder to maintain. Where can we find the strength needed for love that endures, for love that goes beyond the Valentine’s Day version of love? The Bible claims to have the answer: We love because he first loved us. Romans 5:8 says that “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Notice that Jesus didn’t love us because we have it all together, he loved us, and made the ultimate sacrifice for us “while we were still sinners.” We didn’t deserve his love, and we couldn’t earn it, but he gave it unconditionally, and he continues to give it. That’s real love. And while it’s humbling and may seem counterintuitive, when we look at our own sins shortcomings and see that Jesus loved us in spite of it all, we find strength and encouragement to love others in spite of their flaws. In a crazy plot twist, our biggest failures can become fuel for us giving sacrificial, unconditional love to others! There’s life in giving love for others on the other side of us admitting how bad we’ve blown it, realizing we can’t make things right with God on our own, falling at the feet of Jesus and receiving the forgiveness that only his love can bring. The road to redemption is also the road to becoming more loving toward others. We can love people even when they don’t deserve it, because we’ve been there too. And at one degree or another, we’re still “there.” None of us has arrived or have it all figured out. I believe that one day Jesus is going to come back and fix all of the mess we see around us, and in us. But until then we can keep looking up to Jesus, not down on others, and keep receiving his love, and sharing it with others. Jesus is the ultimate example and supplier of love. In John 13:34 Jesus said, “love one another: just as I have loved you.” We love because he first loved us.
