From the Publishers

Simplicity Happy New Year Gunter and welcome to your first issue of GUNTER Magazine!! This project has been in the works for awhile now, and with the right people in place and the amazing support of the community, we are thrilled that 2019 is the year to launch Gunter’s very own magazine!! We’ve learned a lot about this community, and the common theme that runs deep in Gunter is this…we love our community, we love our families and we love our Tigers!! Thank you for the opportunity of serving the Gunter community – we look forward to many years of featuring the people, students, schools, businesses and the heart of Gunter. We are so excited to start 2019…it’s going to be the best year ever!! There are just some New Year’s that FEEL like they are going to be special, and this is one of them. We have some pretty exciting milestones coming up in our household this year, and we are excited to celebrate them with you! Each of our three girls are embarking on new adventures…one is graduating high school and heading to Fayetteville for college, one is entering high school and our baby is starting kindergarten!! Needless to say, 2019 is going to be a fun journey…and probably a bit tearful around our house! One of the things that I am probably most excited about for 2019 is the word that we’ve adopted for the year – SIMPLICITY!! We are taking it back to the basics and focusing on our family, our faith and our business. What we’ve found over the last few years is that it’s easy to get bogged down with the little incidental things that really don’t matter. And in full disclosure, we’ve spent way too much time dwelling on things that are out of our control. It’s time to put things back in order and remember Who is really in control…and so, with that, we’re entering this year with open minds, pure hearts and a clear vision. We hope that you and your family are excited for the fresh and new energy that 2019 is bringing with it. We’re sure some of you have made a few of your own resolutions and we pray that you find all of the happiness and success that your heart desires. However, if you are like us and not big on the whole New Year’s Resolution thing, maybe you can pick a word for the year too! It was a suggestion, or maybe a challenge, from a friend and we are loving the concept. It feels attainable and focused, and for us, that’s the best kind of goal! We wish you all of the best in 2019, and as always, we are so thankful for our readers and so blessed to be able to share this wonderful town with you! Here’s to a SIMPLY wonderful New Year!!

With Tiger Pride,

Jason & Heat her Reynolds #WeAreGunter #TigerNation #TPW If you have any article ideas that you’d like to see in GUNTER Magazine, please reach out to us!! This is Gunter’s magazine and it should be a representation of what the community wants! Please send article ideas to Heather@CedarbrookMedia or call 972-347-6231.

Community

From the Desk of City Manager Lee Lawrence CITY MANAGER’S REPORT #4 The purpose of this and subsequent reports is to communicate to the citizens of Gunter the major activities that your city government is pursuing and give Gunter residents some background on issues confronting the community. EMERGENCIES

How do you do this? Piece of cake. Google “Grayson County”. Click the “Emergency Management” link. You can then either create an account (that lets you actively manage your account) or go directly to the signup form. Instructions are simple, and you will receive phone and text messages whenever an emergency (like a major water break and boil water notice) is issued. We also put this kind of message on the City website and on the City Facebook page but the quickest way you will get the message is through the Code Red system. As we enter our wonderful Texas Spring Storm Season in a couple of months this issue becomes even more important.

WATER SYSTEM UPGRADE

The City recently experienced a major water main break in an area that we could not isolate effectively from the rest of the water system. This meant that most of the community had a water service interruption for several hours. Furthermore, because the break and subsequent repair work introduced potential contaminants into the water system, we are legally required to issue a “boil water” notice.

The recent major water line break also illustrates another issue that the City must address. That break at the corner of Preston Glen and North Preston Road should have affected only a small part of the community. However, because we are working with an old system that does not have adequate valving, we are unable to isolate areas within the system. I mention this because we intend to install additional valves over the next several months to at least mitigate this problem.

I mention this to illustrate the importance of an emergency notice system that your city government uses to notify residents and businesses when these types of incidents occur. The Code Red system automatically calls your home/cell number or numbers when we have a weather emergency or other emergency condition (e.g., water system problem). This is the quickest and most reliable system available to provide this notification. The City pays for our participation and we encourage all residents and businesses to sign up.

The downside of this process is that we will have cut off water in various parts of town as we install the new valves. We will do everything we can to notify the affected areas of town prior to conducting the work but it will still create inconveniences. It is something that has to be done, however, since we don’t want to adversely affect the entire community every time, we have a serious water line problem.

FM 121 In a recent City Manager’s Report, I told you that there would be a public meeting to hear comment(s) on proposed routes for a new alignment of FM 121 from Block Road on the east to FM 121 west of the BNSF rail line. TXDOT rescheduled that meeting and it will now be held on January 31 at 5:30 p.m. at the Gunter High School. This re-routing would eliminate the double curve on FM 121 east of town and create a new intersection of FM 121 and South Preston Road at the south edge of Gunter. While construction on this project is a couple of years away, it will have major implications for development to the immediate south of the city. Additional details of the public hearing will be posted on the city website as information is available.

Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Birds, Exotics, Pocket Pets and Reptiles All Dog and Cat Breed Grooming and Boarding

Gunter 212 Project The City is currently negotiating details on a development project immediately south of the Woodlands of Preston. The project involves 180 acres of residential development and 30 acres of commercial/retail/multifamily development. If approved, the project would include 650-725 residential lots, an elementary school site and about 10 acres of open space area, as well as retail/commercial and multifamily development on the North Preston Road frontage. The project is designed to provide housing for first and second time homebuyers in the $225,000 - $300,000 price range. The city currently has virtually no building lots for first time homebuyers. The residential side of the project, if approved, would develop over a 5-7-year time frame, depending on economic conditions.

Please note that our regular city council meeting has been changed to the third Thursday of each month. Agendas for council meetings are always posted on our website. Following is the schedule of City board and commission meetings: Economic Development Corporation First Thursday of month, 6:00 p.m. (ISD Admin Building) Park Board First Thursday of month, 6:30 p.m. (City Hall) Planning and Zoning Commission Second Thursday of month, 7:00 p.m. (City Hall) City Council Third Thursday of month, 6:00 p.m. (City Hall)

City Hall hours are M-F, 8 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; closed 12 – 1 for lunch. The City staff observes the same hours as the Gunter ISD for inclement weather closings. If school is not in session the Mayor makes closing decisions on an asneeded basis. Please contact us if you have questions or concerns about these or other issues.

On The Homefront

Create a Healthy, Winter-Ready Home

W

FAMILY FEATURES

hen chilly weather arrives and the days get shorter, chances are good you’ll spend the majority of your days indoors. Before you start your hibernation, it’s a good idea to ensure your home is up to the task. Put your well-being at the top of the list with these ideas to help ensure a health-conscious home that’s ready for the dark days of winter.

Encourage better air quality

When the house is closed up tight to keep out the cold, you may be trapping in some undesirable air pollutants. A well-sealed house may not have the best circulation, and that’s the ideal environment for dust mites and other allergens to accumulate. A thorough cleaning is the first step toward better air quality. Do a deep vacuuming of all carpets, including under furniture and around baseboards. Be sure to launder linens that aren’t 12 | January 2019 GunterMag.com

typically part of your regular washing routine, like window treatments and comforters. You may want to consult a heating and cooling specialist to determine whether your ductwork is due for a cleaning. Especially if your system didn’t get much use through the summer months, there may be a fair bit of dust just waiting to infiltrate your home once the furnace begins to blow. Be sure to change filters, clean vents and air returns and, if necessary, consider adding an air purifier that helps filter any remaining particles for the best quality air. When opening windows isn’t comfortable during cold winter weather, letting the sunshine in can still help to improve indoor air quality. A study by the University of Oregon’s Biology and the Built Environment Center showed rooms with increased sunlight have fewer viable bacteria. “Until now, daylighting design has been primarily about visual comfort or circadian health, but now we can say daylighting influences air quality,” said Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg, co-director of the BioBE Center and co-author of the study.

Let in light

Natural light plays an important role in overall health, and reduced daylight in the winter months can have a big impact on productivity and sleep, according to a recent survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of Velux. For example, nearly twothirds of respondents said they believe daylight affects their productivity and mood. Light is also an important cue to the body’s circadian clock, and proper exposure to natural light during the day can help support better sleep when darkness falls. What’s more, sunlight is a natural antidepressant, and there is ample scientific evidence that associates daylight with better health and quality of life, such as improved mood, less fatigue and reduced eyestrain. It may be tempting to keep the drapes closed when it’s blustery outside to ward off a draft, but with well-sealed windows, there’s no reason to block that all-important natural light. In rooms with ample natural light available, take advantage, especially in the morning when exposure to daylight can benefit your circadian rhythm. However, not every room is situated to maximize your access to natural light, and that’s when you can get creative. One solution is skylights, which add natural light to virtually any space. An option like a Sun Tunnel Skylight offered by Velux Skylights lends brightness to even the smallest spaces, like a bathroom or hallway. For a larger room, a fresh-air skylight can help address air quality concerns, and some models offer smartphone connectivity to open and close the skylight and even raise or lower blinds with a few quick taps of the finger. Learn more at whyskylights.com.

Keep out the cold

As a child, you were probably warned to bundle up in cooler weather to avoid catching a cold. As an adult, you likely realize that germs, not temperatures, cause illness. However, there is some truth to the old wives’ tales associating cold with getting sick. The viruses that cause colds and the flu thrive in cooler temperatures, for example. This means that, at least indirectly, a cold environment may indeed make you sick. To ward off a chill in your home, safeguard against drafts around windows and doors. If seasonal weather-proofing is impractical, consider temporary solutions like draft stoppers or mats you can place at the base of doors. Add insulation, if needed, in areas that commonly release a significant amount of heat, such as the attic and garage.

Daylight Makes a Difference As the days become shorter and colder, the importance of getting enough daylight is even more acute to sleep patterns, mood and productivity. These tips can help you get a better night sleep: n Increase your exposure to natural light during the day. Take a lunchtime walk at work or, if you can’t get outside, sit by a window while you eat. n Install blackout curtains in your bedroom to block light from street lamps and the moon. n Turn your thermostat down in the evenings to create a cooler bedroom to sleep in. n Establish a good bedtime routine. For example, read a book instead of spending more time looking at a screen. Blue light from electronic devices mimics daylight and can trick your brain into staying alert. n Use red or orange bulbs in kids’ night lights as these are some of the least disruptive to sleep.

A Bit of Wisdom

Questions… By Joyce Godwin Happy New Year! I’m writing this in the beginning of January 2019, but you may not see it until February after the year is 1/12 underway. Publishing deadlines create some challenges, but I think this is still appropriate. My only new year resolution is to travel often and maybe write more.

Why is there a D in ‘fridge’ but not in refrigerator... Why lemon juice is made with artificial flavor yet dish-washing liquid is made with real lemons... Why they sterilize the needle for lethal injections, and Why do you have to “put your two cents in” but it’s only a “penny for your thoughts”…where’s that extra penny going?

I turned 71 this month. I’ve had to keep saying it to people over and over just to get it to soak into my own brain. That’s what I did when I turned 70 and I’m still working on it. How did that happen so quickly? I don’t feel 71 and if you get mixed up and transpose the numbers, it’s 17. If I don’t look in the mirror, I think I identify with that number more easily…until I think about running, jumping, dancing, climbing stairs or doing any number of things that require an energy level and strength common to teenagers.

Why DID the chicken cross the road or which came first the chicken or the egg?

I recently came across someone else’s writing on Facebook and I love it because I’ve actually contemplated a lot of these questions I’m going to share with you. I, too, at the age of 71, have so many unanswered questions.

Just what is Victoria’s secret? …

I still haven’t learned: Who let the Dogs Out… Where’s the beef…

Why do The Alphabet Song and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star have the same tune... Why did you just try to sing those two previous songs?

Who is Victoria? and...... Do you really think I am this witty?? … I actually got this from a friend, who stole it from her brother’s girlfriend’s uncle’s cousin, who lived next door to an old classmate’s mailman...

How to get to Sesame Street...

I hope this has made you smile today.

Make it Mediterranean

3 dishes to highlight the next trend in internationally themed cuisine

J

FAMILY FEATURES

ust like forward-thinking culinary artists, many at-home chefs seek out the next trendy flavor to provide friends and family gathered around the table. When pondering which trend you’ll dive into in the future, consider incorporating tastes from an especially influential international location – the Mediterranean Sea region. Considered by the experts at Les Dames d’Escoffier International (LDEI) in the organization’s 2018 Trends Report to be one of the most influential parts of the world on the American food scene, flavors from the Mediterranean Sea focus on a diet heavy on fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, seeds and nuts. Take this Hummus recipe, for example, which involves processing a host of beans, seeds and seasonings to create a light, smooth dip to serve with anything from vegetables to crackers. Because the fare is typically lighter, small bites and salads such as Fresh Figs with Honey or this Tomato, Feta and Basil Salad provide easy-to-prepare versions of Mediterranean cuisine. Incorporating vegetables (tomatoes and basil) along with the salty, milky flavors of feta cheese makes the salad a distinctly Mediterranean dish. In addition to Mediterranean food, the trends report highlighted Middle Eastern cuisine and Latin American flavors as areas of the world that

18 | January 2019 GunterMag.com

will influence American dining in the next year. Additionally, LDEI highlighted these regions as likely to be influential in the next three years: 1. East Africa 2. The Balkans 3. The Caribbean Sea To go along with specific regions and countries to influence American food culture, the report identified these international food concepts as the most likely to become prominent food trends: 1. Puebla Hot Pot (Latin America, Mexico) – ancho chile, smoked paprika and spices in chicken stock, served with chicken or pork, corn, avocado crema and fresh garnishes. 2. Manouri (Mediterranean, Greece) – a semi-soft, fresh white whey cheese made from goat or sheep milk. 3. Millet (India) – ancient grains harvested from small-seeded grasses used for porridge. Mediterranean food, because of its reliance on the inclusion of vegetables and exclusion of red meat in many of its dishes, also squarely fits into the top established and growing health trends, according to the report, which are: 1. Vegetarian cuisine 2. Organic 3. Vegan cuisine Find full results from the report and learn more about the organization at LDEI.org.

Should you hire a professional landscaping company? You have to weight the pros and cons and use some common sense. You have to ask yourself some important questions first. 1.

Is this my first landscaping project?

2.

Am I planning on doing a little area or a big area?

3.

Do I understand such technical things as drainage, pitching and so on?

4.

What kind of plants work best for what I want to do?

5.

Do I understand how plants work together in landscaping?

6.

Do I want just flowers, or flowers and bushes, or flowers and trees or all of them?

7.

What kind of landscaping would be best for my lifestyle?

8.

How much work and time do I want to put into working in my yard?

your garden. Some plants flower all summer long, while some only in spring, early summer, late summer and fall. You can arrange your plantings so that you have different colors for their prime part of the season. This can keep your garden exciting and colorful. You also need to plant flowers in accordance to their height and spread. Some plants grow taller than others, so they need to be planted accordingly. Some of your plants spread along the ground, so those would most definitely need to be planted in the very front of your garden or they would never be seen and probably die because the other taller plants would rob them of much needed sunlight. There is much preplanning necessary to have a successful landscape. If you want to go for a bigger project and have never landscaped before, you should hire a professional. You might not like spending the money, but if landscaping is not done properly, you could end up with some serious consequences, which could end up costing hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. To give you one of the worst-case scenarios, if you landscape around your house and the pitch for drainage is incorrect, this could cause foundation damage to your home leaving a very costly bill.

There is a lot of information you need to know if you want your landscaping to last a long time. One good rain storm could wash away all your hard work. Your best bet is to either do some research or go to your local garden center or landscaping company. It’s better to go to professionals that make this their life’s work than local chain stores for this type of information.

If you hire a professional landscaper, they should understand all the techniques to avoid these kinds of situations. Please make sure you get references and do some checking on their other completed projects. We are talking about your home here and you need to protect her and keep her safe. When you make a decision on a professional landscaping company you should be rest assured that they will make all the appropriate choices in regard to your home. You should be able to tell them exactly what you want, and they can tell you if that is attainable. Whichever route you take, just make sure that your end result is spectacular and that it will be something you will enjoy for a long, long time!

If you would like to try some landscaping yourself, it is suggested that you work with a small area first. To get the most out of the garden you create, you need to research the type of plants you would like to implement in

Question: Jimmie, we can’t thank you enough for the advice you have

provided my husband and I over the years! You wouldn’t believe how helpful you have been to us! We have one area out back that just drives us completely bonkers! It is where we store our trash cans, pool equipment and A/C units! This entire area stays shady and our dogs track in mud constantly! I am sure you have other clients with similar issues. I saw you the other day at Kroger, but you were with your kids and frankly, I was too shy to approach you and bother you! HaHa!! Any advice? Erin R. in Prosper Answer: Hello Erin! Thank you for the kind words, next time you see me around town PLEASE don’t be shy! Say hello!! Heck I was probably buying something the kids just HAD to have! Now, on to your dilemma. Those areas you are describing are very typical in established residences. We generally address those entire spaces with a decorative gravel or River Rock and countersink stepping stones of the clients’ choice (I prefer flagstone). You then have no maintenance, no mud, easy access for homeowners or contractors for future maintenance/repairs etc.

Question: Jimmie, I recently received some Monkeygrass from a friend at work. I am planning to go ahead and plant it now, but don’t really know if it requires any special treatment? Any advice you can give me would be great! Pam K. in Prosper. Answer: Hi Pam, Liriope comes in quite a few varieties. Most all of them can divide into smaller plugs most any time of year. Just plant it into well prepped garden soil and keep it moist. It’s a native ground cover here that generally thrives and does well. Most popular variety is “Big Blue” that has a nice blue/purple bloom in summer. Some people mow or weed whack it down once a year, others do not. That’s a personal preference. Until next time…Happy New Year!!

In His Presence

What’s Going On In Your Heart? A little over a year ago, just after concluding our Sunday morning service, my phone lit up with a news update that a man with an automatic rifle entered a church in south Texas killing more than 20 people. Over the next several days my heart grieved with those who lost loved ones in a senseless, horrific act of violence. But I also grieved for Devin Patrick Kelley, the man who carried out this crime, and wondered what would drive someone to do such a thing. The investigation by authorities discovered a very troubling past including domestic violence, and that he had been harboring a very intense hatred against his mother in-law who attended the church, although she was not there that Sunday. In Matthew 15, after a confrontation with a group of religious leaders, Jesus issued this warning, “But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.” (Matthew 15:18-19) NLT What Jesus is telling us is that these kinds of behaviors don’t take us by surprise; that we aren’t victims of our physical bodies acting independently of our will. They happen because we allow things like anger, jealousy, hatred, and lust to enter and reside in our heart. This is why King Solomon once wrote, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (Proverbs 4:23) NLT Think about that for moment. Whatever you allow to enter in your heart… whatever you allow to stay in your heart…what’s in your heart determines the course of your life! Therefore it is critically important for us to guard what we allow in our heart, and what we allow to stay there. Devin Patrick Kelley not only allowed hate to just enter his heart, he allowed hate to fill his heart. And while his example might be extreme, the truth is that we are all guilty of allowing things to take up space in our hearts that do not belong there. And these things can lead us to do things we never thought we would do. So how do we take King Solomon’s advice and guard our heart from these

very destructive things? Just like anything else, these things need time to grow; they don’t overtake us overnight. And we’re all smart enough to recognize these things in their infancy. If we’re going to guard our heart, we have to constantly be aware of things we’re allowing to come in and what we’re allowing to stay there. So as soon as you begin to feel things on the inside that could potentially lead to destructive behaviors, you need to immediately take some actionable steps to evict those things from your heart. Anger is a very common emotion we all feel. But how do you deal with the anger once you begin to sense it? Anger has to be resolved quickly, or it will bleed over into other relationships, our career, and how we parent our kids. As soon as you begin to feel anger toward someone, you have to take some very intentional steps to forgive that person, whether they deserve it or not. Forgiveness may not have any effect on the one you forgave, but it will set you free from anger taking root in your heart. We all know what jealousy feels like, but how quick are we to squash it. Unresolved jealousy can make us bitter, and incapable of being nice to the person we’re jealous of. And the only way to rid our heart of jealousy is to genuinely celebrate with the person we’re jealous of. When lust enters your heart, it needs to be exposed. Hidden lust leads us to all kinds of destructive behaviors like bondage to pornography or even cheating on our spouse. Lust holds power over us when we keep it hidden in the dark. But once it’s exposed and brought out into the light, it loses its power over us. And hate has no business taking up any space in our heart. And the only real solution to hate is expressing unconditional love. As soon as you begin to feel the slightest touch of hate in your heart toward someone, you need to go out of your way to express unconditional love to them. Like Jesus told us, “Love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. 28 Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.” (Luke 6:2728) NLT What’s going on in your heart? I encourage you to examine your heart and aggressively take steps to evict what doesn’t belong there. -Jim Lugar – Lead Pastor of Life Journey Church
