December 2018 | Issue #89 Published By Cedarbrook Media Group, LLC Editorial/Marketing Director Heather Reynolds Heather@CedarbrookMedia.com Production/Creative Director Jason Reynolds Jason@CedarbrookMedia.com Business Development Director Jodie Brownd Jodie@CedarbrookMedia.com

It’s the most WONDERFUL time of the year!! The Spirit of Christmas is upon us and ‘Tis the Season to be Jolly…all of these wonderful phrases are just the beginning of the JOY that we feel during this magical time of year. It’s a great month to celebrate not only our Savior, but the abundant blessings of our family, friends and colleagues. We love every single part of the hustle and bustle…the sights, the music, the decorations, the food, the lights, the shopping, the time with our family, the pure joy and most importantly, the love for Jesus. Although it gets crazy busy during December, there is just nothing better than the happiness and cheer that Christmas brings about! Every Christmas is meaningful and special in some way…but this year just seems to be more so for us. We jumped into the spirit EARLY and we’ve been jingling all the way ever since! We are on the cusp of a major milestone…as we celebrate all of the “lasts” of Senior year, this is the last Christmas that all of our girls will be home all season long to celebrate. Add to that the fact that Jordyn is at the PERFECT age to enjoy the magic of Christmas. It brings joy to us all when we listen to her sweet little voice sing “Away in the Manger” and “Jingle Bells” and we all to watch her face light up each morning when she looks around the house to see where Elmer the Elf has landed for the day. The innocence and belief in her eyes are unrivaled…and we love to see how it triggers the joy in the older girls too. The holiday season is about joy, giving and love. Our children are fortunate and so very blessed. Not only in material ways, but by the love and affection of our family and friends. We couldn’t be happier to have chosen Prosper as our home and the place to raise our girls. God definitely had a hand in placing us here 8 years ago…and He’s provided for us each and every minute since. Through His grace, our children have learned what a true community is and expect nothing less than to feel the sense of belonging that comes from a deep love for your people and your village. We hope we have instilled in them the importance of spreading that joy and that love, as well as their good fortune, with all who are in need. From the very deepest part of our hearts, we’d like to take this moment to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. We cannot thank this community enough for the support and love that is shown all year long for one another and for our Eagles. Prosper is one of a kind, and we are blessed to call it home.

Jason, Heat her, Maddie, Kenzie & Jordyn Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

CHRISTMAS TREE-LIGHTING TRADITION ON THE LAWN OF TOWN HALL Cherished Custom Included New Tree, Christmas Story and Candlelight Sing-Along

Of all the many enduring traditions that help Prosper keep that unique small-town character, perhaps none is as dear to residents as the official Town Tree Lighting downtown by our Mayor. This year’s celebration took place at Town Hall on the evening of December 3rd. The beloved tradition, while still closely cherished by local families, was slightly updated this year, as the Town of Prosper inaugurated a new tree on the lawn of the recently-opened Town Hall in downtown Prosper at 200 S. Main St. Residents have, for a good number of years, previously gathered around the live evergreen, next to the old post office building on Broadway, to keep the annual tradition unbroken, even in the face of harsh weather. In fact, many long-time residents have seen that live evergreen grow each Christmas, from a five-foot sapling almost a decade ago to what is today a 12-foot tall tree with a generous girth. The number of lights and ornaments increased each year to keep up with the tree’s growth, applied with great care by the Town’s very own staff members. While we gathered around a different tree, the tree-lighting tradition continued downtown, by popular request, even when the Christmas Festival was moved from the downtown sector to the more spacious and accommodating Frontier Park. Prosper families were invited to attend the celebration to help keep the tradition alive. It was a rather chilly evening, but there was hot chocolate for all and the spirit of Christmas ran high. Holiday music resonated from the speakers as everyone gathered around our new Town Hall for this special celebration.

12 | December 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

Dudley Raymond, Director of Parks and Recreation, welcomed the crowd and introduced Prosper Community Library Director Leslie Scott who read “A Visit from St. Nicolas”. The story began with the iconic line: ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Parents and children alike, who had read and heard the story over and over again during their lifetimes, recited along from memory. The celebration continued as the talented Rogers Middle School choir sang Christmas carols. Mayor Ray Smith then asked all the children in the crowd to join him as he prepared to flip the switch. As they came to the front, he introduced several Councilmen, the Police and Fire Chiefs and joined them in wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas. They then began the countdown, and as they reached the end, the 30-foot tall community Christmas tree was illuminated with hundreds of bulbs. Town of Prosper staff had passed out candles to the crowd, and as the flames were lit, the community sing-along began to a beautiful rendition of Silent Night, led by the Roger Choir. “Historically, the heart of Prosper has been the site of the official Town Tree Lighting and we look forward to continuing that tradition,” says Dudley Raymond. “The hometown Christmas tree will be displayed at Town Hall for years to come and we’re excited to celebrate with the community.”

ambra Bacon, her husband Glen and their twins moved to Prosper in 2009. Kambra wasted no time in getting involved with the Prosper community. She has served on the board of PISD PTO, the board of Prosper Ladies Association and the board of Prosper Lions Club. She quickly realized that there was a true need for a floral shop here in our growing town. The Bacon’s prayed about it for several years and finally took a leap of faith into entrepreneurship in 2014 when they opened Prosper Blooms. “We are proud to say that Prosper Blooms is the first full-service retail floral shop in Prosper”, says Kambra Bacon. Located on the southeast corner of Coit and Prosper Trail, they are a family-owned local business who offers same-day flower delivery. They specialize in all of life’s celebrations – birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, special event arrangements and funeral arrangements. They import fresh florals from around the world on a daily basis, ensuring that your arrangements arrive fresh and in perfect condition. They also handcraft each floral arrangement with love and each one is unique to the person or event for which it is created. They have a gift line fit for all tastes: jewelry, décor items, spirit wear, glassware and more! At Prosper Blooms, they believe in everyday joys… promoting love and support in Prosper and surrounding communities. Kambra and her staff strive every day to produce a fresh product that lasts and offers a 5* customer service rating. Kambra says, “I always tell my staff that if these flowers/services are not good enough for your Momma, then they’re not good enough for our clients! We offer so much more than the flowers that have been sitting out for days in a grocery store environment. We want more for you and for your special occasion. Our slogan truly says it all…”Bloom Where You are Planted” (1 Cor 7:2024).

Prosper Blooms is successful and unique because they care about our “little” town. Every year there is undoubtably someone or something that tugs at the heartstrings of these generous entrepreneurs. Many times, they offer pro bono services or substantial discounts for whatever is needed. The Bacon’s are true believers in giving back to their community. They support Prosper football, basketball, volleyball and the swim/dive team, just to name a few. And they also support numerous local charities and non-profit organizations. The love they have for our community is evident in everything they do. When asked what their vision was for their future, Kambra excitedly said, “As Prosper continues to grow, I envision my business to grow along with it! Our mission is to help clients find the perfect flowers to deliver their message and enhance their special occasion. I believe our stunning arrangements will allow nature’s beauty to inspire their special moment. We are a local florist who is dedicated to your satisfaction and you can always expect your needs to be treated with all the attention to detail they deserve.” Prosper Blooms is an Official Sponsor to Prosper ISD, has been voted Best Of Florist in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and offers a continuous 10% discount to all PISD employees, staff and administration as well as Military, Fire, Police and Town of Prosper employees and Councilmen. If there is one thing that Kambra Bacon hopes that people know and remember about her, it’s this. “Everything I have is all due to The Glory of God! As long as you put Him in the center of everything you do, you will succeed!”

Making the Holidays Bright A COMMUNITY TRADITION OF GIVING

When Neighbors are going through a rough patch financially, Christmastime can be an especially difficult time of year. With the help of community volunteers, Cornerstone is hosting 225 local children and their 90 families at Cornerstone Christmas. At this festive holiday event, parents secretly shop for their children’s gifts while volunteers keep their children involved in fun activities — turning the burden of Christmas into a celebration with their family. For the 500+ volunteers, the spirit of giving is a cherished tradition that everyone can share. In the weeks leading up to Cornerstone Christmas, Cornerstone partners with the community, businesses, and schools to hold drives for new coats, toys, socks, underwear, décor, food, and stocking stuffers. These drives collect a wide range of holiday cheer to share with Neighbors. Some participating Neighbors are those who Cornerstone has worked with over the past year; others opt in through a partnership with Prosper ISD. The event starts with a Gospel presentation, followed by activities for the kids and conversations with the host family for the parents as they navigate the Christmas shopping options and wrap up their selections. Each family is free to choose the brand-new gifts their children will love most, whether they’re shopping for their infant, toddler, elementary-age child, middle-schooler, or teenager. Cornerstone is still in need of the following items: New Toys/Gifts for Children ages 8-18 New Coats (Size Youth Small to 2XL) Gently Used Coats (Size Adult Small to Adult 3XL) New or Very Gently Used Christmas Trees (all lights must work if prelit) Please drop these items off at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship Monday – Friday from 8-5.

Shop Local This Holiday Season By Jodie Brownd

As the holiday season sneaks up on us, you’re probably thinking thoughts about who to get what for whom and how you will fill that space beneath your tree. You’ve maybe even contacted Santa Claus’ elves to set up an appointment to talk about Christmas wishes…and you’re most likely dreading making the trip to the crowded mall! It’s enough to convince even the most avid shopper that online purchasing may be the best bet. But we have another option for you! If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a million times…the growth in our area is moving at warped speed. And with that growth, comes more shopping options in our very own hometown! With the hustle and bustle of the season, it could not come at a better time. Phase I of the new Gates of Prosper shopping center is now fully open and new businesses are popping up on every corner. There probably isn’t a whole lot that you need that you can’t find right here at home. Some benefits to that are convenience, saving time, gas and your patience if personal space is an issue while searching for those last-minute stocking stuffers! However, when you make your purchases here at home, you’re also putting your money to good use for our community and our schools. What better way to spend your time and money than with those businesses that give back to the community we live in? Whether you’re shopping for new hunting gear, jewelry, shoes, clothing, toys, sporting goods or even a new car, there isn’t anything on your list, or Santa’s, that can’t be found right around the corner in the comfort of your own town. We’ve got everything from large storefronts like Walmart and Dick’s, to small businesses like Very Betty (located next to Kroger) or our longtime friend at Maggie’s in the downtown area.

18 | December 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

There are also plenty of places to pick up gift cards for that special person that isn’t always easy to buy for. Manicures, pedicures and massages are always a good choice, or you can hop on over to Tease, for a haircut or hair color gift card after you freeze your shopping troubles away at Collin County Cryo. All of that shopping can sure make you hungry, but lucky for you, you have many different options to satisfy that hunger! Step on into the The Gin for a cold beverage or their awesome chicken wings and pizzas. Take a seat at the Cotton Gin, JC’s Burgers or Chic Fil A for the perfect sandwich or burger or Salsa’s, Mesa’s or Sauce for a spicy bite that is sure to warm you up. You can even cure your seasonal sweet tooth for dessert at Chills 360, Menchie’s or PeachWave. There’s so much going on in our great community and there’s no better time than the season of giving to get out in the middle of all of it! There’s something for everyone on your list right here in Prosper…no matter who your “difficult to shop for person” is. Now that our options are limitless here north of 380, it not only saves time and fuel, but it also gives us more time to consider the true meaning of Christmas! We hope that you remember that while we’re all out there searching for the best gifts for our loved ones, we’ve already been given the best gift of all this Christmas… we’re all blessed to live in a community that celebrates that. See you out and about, Prosper!!

Town Matters

By Mayor Ray Smith

The enduring messages of peace, love, and joy brought to us by the birth of Jesus ring loudly this month, and beg the question of how we, as individuals and families, are putting those vitally important messages into practice. It’s easy for us to love and care for our family members, and keeping the peace with our friends and close neighbors takes relatively little effort. But if we are being true to the calling of Jesus, we should always try to stretch beyond our circle of friends and family. Even in Prosper, notwithstanding the name of our community, there are people in need, families who can use a helping hand. We don’t always see them or interact with them, but we know that they are part of our community. Fortunately, Prosper is blessed with tremendous residents who show their caring through their generous spirit, and, at the same time, there are people who provide a number of ways for that generous spirit to be shared. The staff and volunteers of Cornerstone North Central Texas, right here in our community, do wonderful work with those individuals and families who find themselves in need of some assistance. The thrift store they manage not only provides a way for families to obtain clothes, furniture and other necessities, but also give the rest of us an opportunity to donate items for their use. The organization also provides many other kinds of financial and social assistance, which can be, and often is, the only help these needy families can count on.

20 | December 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

Cornerstone’s Back to School Bash and Cornerstone Christmas programs are just two of the many ways the organization is making a difference. Want to help or learn more? Visit www.cornserstonenct.org. In the same manner, the staff and volunteers of the Bethlehem Place Food Bank are an important part of our Town’s safety net for families and individuals who find themselves in dire circumstances. The people who help run the food bank are constantly giving us the opportunity to help in whatever way we can. We don’t have to wait for a food drive to donate. The food bank will gladly accept donations. Visit https://bethlehemplace. org to find out more and to arrange for dropping off your donations. Other local organizations also provide numerous opportunities to assist. The Prosper Ladies Association will host a Prosper Christmas Angels tree at Town Hall, the Prosper Chamber will hold its annual coat drive, Secret Santa’s will be readily available, and programs put on by various churches, social, civic and school groups, all give us opportunities to help. As we gather with our family, friends, neighbors and associates, let us all remember the true meaning of the Christmas season – sharing the peace, love, and joy of the birth of our savior. Lena and I, along with our boys, wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!

Home & Garden

My Gift to You…How to Avoid Common Landscaping Mistakes!! We live in a do-it-yourself culture. The upside is that many of us get tremendous opportunities to try our hands to learn interesting things while saving money. The downside is that we sometimes trade expertise and quality for that experience and cost-effectiveness. Landscaping is a perfect example of this. Everyone wants to take care of the job without calling the professionals, but their lack of expertise can create problems. Professional landscapers know the business inside and out. They understand composition; they know which plants will compliment others. They understand the soil, the elements and what things will actually compliment the design of your home. You might think you have a “great eye” and you may be a quick study. However, the average do-ityourselfer is not an expert landscaper. As such, several common mistakes are repeated across the board. Let’s look at four common landscaping mistakes and by understanding the errors of others, you might be able to avoid doing the same things! You can do your own landscaping. If you work hard enough, you may even produce some professional results. Your odds of getting the job done right will improve considerably if you learn to avoid some of the common errors of do-it-yourselfers. RULING WITH A RULER--ERRORS OF LINEARITY Many self-styled landscapers approach their projects as if the world functioned exclusively along the rigid lines of grid. The natural world, 28 | December 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

however, isn’t flat or square. It’s bumpy and curvy. It undulates and sways. Professionals understand that and try to work within natural lines and use the “imperfections” of nature to heighten aesthetic appeal. Amateurs often have a preoccupation with trying to make everything square and straight, which tends to create an uninviting and severe atmosphere. NEGLECTING THE FRONT--FORGETTING TO PUT YOUR FACE ON Most of us prefer some degree of privacy. Thus, we tend to spend the bulk of our time in our backyards instead of in front of the house. As a result, we also tend to have much larger areas with which to work behind our house. It does make sense that most landscaping work will occur in the back, but too many amateurs focus on the back yard to the near-exclusion of the front. There is no “harm” in that, but it does represent a wasted opportunity to improve the value and attractiveness of your home. Make sure you plot a course of landscaping success in the front yard. After all, your family and friends come through the front door, so while not create some curb appeal? LIVING IN THE MOMENT--IGNORING FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS Those shrubs you plan on planting right under the bay window will look great this year. And the next. After that, though, you had better plan on a weekly trimming. You have three feet of clearance between ground and window, and those cute little shrubs will grow ten feet high if not held in check. That’s just an example of a common problem experienced by doit-yourself landscapers. They aren’t forward thinking enough and that can cause problems. You need to understand your plants, how they will look now and how they will grow in the future. That kind of knowledge helps you create better looks and can save you tons of work in the end. Do your research on every plant…otherwise that cute little plant you install by the front door will prevent the pizza delivery guy from seeing your address in three years!

IT’S YOUR LAWN--NEGLECTING THE REST OF THE FAMILY A common amateur error is to design a landscaping plan without taking the usage patterns and desires of other family members into consideration. That wonderful winding path to the garden might cut right across the kids’ favorite place to play ball. That five-foot retaining wall may create an attractive vista, but it may not be attractive to a potential buyer with three small children a few years from now. Consider what others will appreciate and don’t assume your amateur vision is perfect. Question: Jimmie, ever since I was a little girl, I can remember the smell of Gardenias outside my window in the summer. I am fairly new to the area and not really familiar with what does well here and what doesn’t. Is it even possible to grow them in Texas? Any additional information you can give me about this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. -Karie P. in Prosper. Answer: Hi Karie, welcome to Texas!! Yes, you can grow Gardenias here. Depending on your landscape needs there are mainly 2 types with many different species. There is an upright shrub form plant August Beauty (used generally as a soft backdrop 4-5 ft.) and the other one would be the dwarf variety Frost proof Gardenia (used for a lower or second tier 1-2 ft.) However, you need to be aware of a couple of guidelines. The first being they do best in morning sun and afternoon shade. The second thing is Gardenias like acidic conditions to really thrive. This means you will need to feed them some form of acid once a month or so leading up to the bloom. You can buy these products at a high-end nursery or use a natural form of acid such as coffee grounds or mix 1 cup of vinegar with one gallon of water and apply either at the same rate. Until next time…Happy Gardening! And Happy Holidays from my family to yours! Jimmie
