Family, Love & Togetherness The Christmas Season is always a favorite of ours… there’s just nothing like the joy and happiness that this time of year brings. It is a beautiful celebration for the birth of our savior, and we absolutely delight in the festivities that Christmas entails. From the beautiful decorations to the twinkling lights to the Christmas carols to the time spent with family and friends…each and every part of the holiday season is special and meaningful in its own way. We truly believe that it is the most wonderful time of the year. We hope that you take the time this season to reflect on what is really important…family, love and togetherness. Often times during the hustle and bustle, we get lost in running from one party to the next or chasing the perfect gift for that special someone. It’s understandable and we’ve all done it…but this year, why not try to be intentional about slowing down and really celebrating the season. Take an evening to relax with your kids – no phones, no distractions – just put a Christmas movie on and snuggle up on the couch. You’ll be amazed at how much that time together can really recharge you. Or, if movies aren’t your thing, bake some cookies or make some candy. The important part is that you are doing something fun together and creating lasting memories. One of our favorite Christmas traditions is decorating our house and putting up our trees. Yes, that was plural. We have several trees in our house – 10 to be exact. And while that may seem extreme to many, there is nothing we love more than decking our halls and transforming our home into a winter wonderland. I think that in a way, it makes me feel like my mother is still with us. When I was growing up, she loved her Christmas tree. I remember drinking hot chocolate with my brother and listening to Alvin & the Chipmunks “All I want for Christmas” on the record player while we watched her hang the tinsel and get each and every ornament in just the right spot. She was meticulous about it and we loved watching how happy it made her. And for me today, each time we finish with one of our trees, it gives me a sense of peace that she is near and celebrating the season with us. We would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for sharing your holiday with us and allowing us to share ours with you. Our town has really grown over the last 10 years, but the hearts of Prosper people have not changed. Our town comes together to help those in need…our town prays for one another…and our town supports each other in failures and cheers in times of success. There is much more change and growth coming our way in this next decade – and we can’t wait to see all of the great things we accomplish in Prosper! Prayers for a safe and joyous Christmas Season from our family to yours…we’ll see y’all in 2020!! Jesus is the Reason for the Season,
-Jason, Heather, Maddie, Kenzie & Jordyn

Christmas Eve – Eve Family Fun Night he holidays are such a busy time. It seems like every second of every minute from Christmas Eve morning to Christmas night is scheduled out and filled with family, food, gifts and more food. There is usually so much going on that as parents, we don’t ever have the chance to just sit with our children and enjoy the peace and joy of the season. But this year, here is a fun new tradition that you can start right before the hustle and bustle begins. It’s a great way to destress from all the holiday preparations and enjoy a nice night with your kids right before the Christmas festivities begin!
T
It all starts with your family’s Elf on a Shelf. If your Elf has been visiting for a few years, you can create your own twist to the story. In our house, the Elf travels back to the North Pole each night so that he can give Santa daily reports about how the kids have been behaving. He sometimes brings a small treat or two throughout the month when they’ve been really good, and of course he gets into some mischief during the nighttime hours…but on the morning of December 23rd, he always brings us a special letter attached to a beautiful Christmas box and places it under the tree. If your family doesn’t have an elf, the special box can come directly from you. The special box is filled with everything we need for our Christmas Eve – Eve Family Night. The letter from our elf explains which Christmas movie he has chosen for us this year and why it’s important for our family to watch it together. And inside the Christmas box there are always new pajamas, a Christmas book, popcorn, packs of hot chocolate, marshmallows, special Christmas mugs, Christmas cookies, candy canes and any other sweet Christmas treats we enjoy. After dinner, we put on our new pajamas, make hot chocolate, popcorn and snack trays, and snuggle up as a family to watch the Christmas movie our elf chose for us. When the movie is over, we pile into the car and drive around the neighborhood looking at the beautiful Christmas lights. Finally, it’s time for bed and we close out our Christmas Eve – Eve Family Night by reading our newest Christmas book. We all go to bed relaxed, joyful and ready to celebrate the next morning! 10 | WeAreProsper.com

The 2019 Prosper Eagle Football team brought the town more than just a football season. This year was the opening of the highly anticipated Children’s Health Stadium at Prosper ISD, and the Rowlett pre-game activities describe just what this year was about. The flyover, and the live Eagle, along with the energy and noise that came with the crowd, will forever go down in history as the first game ever played in the Stadium. That game would end with a 31-7 domination over the Rowlett Eagles. And with that, the season was off to an iconic start with 5 backto-back wins: Keller Timber Creek (49-7), Flower Mound (5734), McKinney High (49-14), and even a 42-0 shut out over Plano East – who the Eagles lost to last year. And then came a tough one. Up until week 6, the Prosper defense had shut out every opponent in the first quarter. Although Prosper came into the game favored to win, Jesuit had a secret weapon. The boys would put up an impressive second half fight but ended up with their first loss on the road 41-14. The Eagles then came home the following week and got back on track with a 29-3 win over McKinney Boyd. Plano West was no challenge for this team, seeing as they rolled right over them with no debate. Another roadblock would come in week 9, when the Eagles met Allen at our stadium. The entire town of Prosper felt that heartbreaking loss with the boys, but everyone there went home that night knowing those boys came to battle. The following week was senior night. We had already secured our playoff spot, but Plano Senior was going to have to pull out a win for theirs. The seniors played one of their best games of the season, and the entire community said thank you to some of the best players to ever come through Prosper High. A 58-27 win over Plano Senior would be the perfect end to the regular season. When playoff season began, Wylie became Prosper’s first enemy, and the Eagles showed them no mercy. Prosper accomplished their second shut-out of the season taking the Bi-District Championship with a score of 24-0. Next up was Mesquite at Allen Stadium, and Prosper showed once again that they had come into playoff season ready to win. The resounding 45-18 victory proved this to anyone who was questioning the talent and dedication of our boys. The Area Round Gold Ball was enough to send the boys down to Waco to play the Woodlands for the Regional Semifinal title. The energy that came from McLane Stadium will be a memory forever with these football players. Not only did it show how dedicated our students and fans were, but it proved how much confidence and support were behind this team. They finished strong, played a full 4 quarters, and took the Regional Semifinal title 38-14. On December 7th, this amazing team saw their season come to an end. The Eagles may have taken a 59-42 loss, but they remained competitive throughout the entire game and fought until the very last second. And although the season has come to a close, it’s not going to be the end of some of these players’ careers. Jake Majors is on way to the University of Texas, while key players such as Josh Graham, Tate Nichols, Hayden Metcalf, JT Lane, and Will Prendergast are bound to be playing at the next level. From the very first game of the season, this program started out with hype, community and heart…and forever set a new standard for Prosper Football.

Town Matters
Merry Christmas Prosper From the Desk of Mayor Ray Smith
Christmas is a wonderous time of year for so many reasons. The first, of course, is the miraculous birth of the baby Jesus. Born into abject poverty, the Christ Child would become the salvation of our world. That birth signaled to all the peoples of all the lands that peace, love, and joy would rule. Unfortunately, we don’t always live up to those ideals, but the example put forth by that baby’s birth over 2,000 years ago gives us the guideposts we need to continue striving toward them. Our Town’s celebration of that birth happened on Saturday, December 7th on the grounds of Town Hall. The staff worked diligently to get everything ready. The Parks and Recreation Department, along with a small group of resident volunteers, put together an event that was the envy of the entire North Texas area. There was something for everyone at the Christmas Festival, so I sincerely hope that everyone enjoyed it. Our thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors, especially our title sponsors, Texas Health Neighborhood Care & Wellness Prosper and Legacy Gardens – Inspired Living with Risland Homes, both of whom are back from having been title sponsors last year. Our Town’s administrative offices will close on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, December 24 and Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25, reopening on Thursday, December 26. My advice is if you have any business to conduct with Town Hall, that you do it on any week other than Christmas 14 | WeAreProsper.com
Week. Many of our employees will be taking a few vacation days and Town Hall may be a little less populated that week. What will be fully staffed are our public safety centers. Both fire stations and the police station will be at full strength. If you see a firefighter, police officer or dispatcher during the holiday week, please extend a gesture of gratitude for their service in keeping our community safe. Fire Chief Stuart Blasingame and Police Chief Doug Kowalski are among the best in the business, and we are fortunate to have both on staff. The year is quickly coming to an end, and as we look back at the last 12 months, we can point with a great sense of pride at the accomplishments of our Town. With the guidance of the Council and the leadership of our Town Manager Harlan Jefferson, Prosper is now being seen in a different light. Whereas, not terribly long ago, we were seen as the little suburb with plenty of potential, we are now counted among the top in our category. That’s a tremendous accomplishment, and I know I speak for my colleagues on the Council when I say that we are most definitely on the right track with the right personnel behind the wheel. My hope is that we continue to keep our Town motto firmly in mind – Prosper is a place where everyone matters. From the Smith family to one and all – Merry Christmas!

Miniature Bottle Brush Trees Do you have a side table that needs some sprucing up or a coffee table tray that needs a holiday lift? Miniature bottle brush trees are an inexpensive touch to your living room and come in just about every color scheme imaginable. Find them just about everywhere from Amazon to Pier 1 for only a few dollars each.
Garland and Plaid in the Bedroom You don’t have to put up a tree to spread holiday cheer in your bedroom…just add some oversized garland draped across your headboard, swap out your accent pillows and blankets and add a few holiday props. We tied this look together with a cozy sweater style blanket, flannel pillows and a plaid lampshade in coordinating colors.
Wrap your Gifts as Décor If you do your gift shopping early enough, you can wrap your gifts in coordinating patterns of plaid wrapping paper and display them throughout your home as added décor. Piling them into a fun basket, bucket or decorative wheelbarrow next to your tree is a nice touch. Or displaying them on tables and chairs in your entry way is an inexpensive way to welcome your guests.
Festive Front Porch Welcome the Christmas carolers with plenty of festive style by adorning your front porch with garland, ribbon and wreaths. Add a couple of plaid pillows to your rocking chairs, some miniature spruce trees, a sled, Christmas blankets and some lanterns and you’ll want to sit outside all season long, regardless of the cold and weather!
Holiday TableScape Christmas dinner with your family is a joyous occasion…so set the tone for a warm experience with this beautiful holiday tablescape. We started with a simple red table runner and added a few votive candles, swags of garland with pinecones and red berries, and placed a wreath at the centerpiece. We then added elegant white china topped with simple red napkins, which we embellished with a sprig of garland and red berries, to complete the festive tabletop.

POP UP HOLIDAY TRADITIONS
From decorating the tree to baking the ham, there are many time-honored holiday traditions observed by families around the country. However, the holiday season is about more than just celebrating old traditions. A perfect opportunity for creating new memories and traditions, popcorn can serve as an ideal ingredient to bring family time to life. Whether wrapping the tree with garland made from the light and airy treat, filling clear ornaments with freshly popped kernels or simply popping up a bowl as a nutritious alternative to other holiday noshes, popcorn makes it easy to get hands-on while you deck the halls. These seasonal recipes for traditional treats like peppermint bark and popcorn balls plus edible trees and a more elegant take on a simple snack highlight low-fat, non-GMO, gluten-free whole-grain popcorn as the main ingredient.
WHITE CHOCOLATE PEPPERMINT POPCORN BARK 5 cups popped popcorn 12 ounces white chocolate baking chips 1 cup crushed peppermint candies
Cover baking pan with foil or wax paper; set aside. Place popcorn in large bowl; set aside. In double boiler over barely simmering water, melt chocolate, stirring until smooth. Stir in crushed peppermints. Pour chocolate mixture over popcorn and stir to coat. Spread onto prepared pan; cool completely. When chocolate is cooled and set, break into chunks. Makes about 1 pound

increments, stirring after each heating, until chips are melted and smooth. Drizzle over popcorn. Place white chocolate chips in separate microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on medium 30 seconds; stir. If necessary, microwave in additional 10-second increments, stirring after each heating, until chips are melted and smooth. Drizzle over popcorn. Sprinkle desired amount of candy sprinkles over warm chocolatecoated popcorn. Allow chocolate drizzles to set until firm. Break popcorn into pieces. Note: Chocolate chips can be replaced with cut up chocolate bars. Makes 8 cups
Stir in vanilla extract. Pour mixture over popcorn in bowl. Toss well to coat popcorn evenly. Line baking sheet with foil. Spray hands with nonstick cooking spray then scoop about 1 cup popcorn mixture. Shape mixture into cone, keeping base flat to form tree. Sprinkle tree with decorating sugars; place tree on baking sheet. Make nine additional trees. Using decorating tip, pipe frosting on trees to make garland then decorate with sprinkles and silver dragees, as desired. Serving suggestion: Place each tree on sugar cookie and decorate serving tray with shredded coconut to resemble snow. Notes: For best flavor and color, start recipe with unflavored white popcorn. You can make colored sugar by adding food coloring to sugar then stirring in bowl or shaking vigorously in sealed container. Add additional food coloring for more intense tones. Makes about 10 trees. Remember When
The Shawnee Trail: Prosper Cattle Ranching Life in the 1850’s Farming started in the Prosper area in the 1880’s. Prior to that time, cattle ranching was the major source of revenue for the settlers. There were not many settlers in the western part of Collin County before 1850, so most of the area had no inhabitants. This was virgin land that had not been grazed or cultivated. So, when the settlers began to move into the area, cattle ranching was the major way to make a living. It was helped because the popular “Shawnee Trail” came through the Prosper area. The Shawnee Trail began in the 1840’s and ended in the 1870’s. It is important to note that after the Shawnee Trail disbanded, the “Chisholm Trail” began. It ran from south Texas into Fort Worth and then north to Abilene, Kansas. The Shawnee Trail started deep in south Texas, below San Antonio, then ran through Austin and Waco and crossed the Trinity River in Dallas. From Dallas, the trail basically followed Preston Road and Coit Road through Collin County and then through Grayson County until it crossed over the Red River at Preston Bend. After crossing the Red River, the trail traveled through Oklahoma and split at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. One trail went to major cattle markets in Sedalia, Kansas City, St. Louis, Independence and Westport, Missouri. The other trail went through Baxter Springs and other points in Kansas. These were the nearest rail heads to market the cattle. Thousands and thousands of cattle traveled through the Prosper area. In 1866, approximately 250,000 head of cattle were on the trail to the markets in Missouri and Kansas. John and Charlotte Collins settled on some land in 1848 about one mile east of Rock Hill along Rock Hill Road. Their land included a large spring where cattle drovers from the Shawnee Trail would bed their cattle down for the night and water their herds. This land soon became the Barlow Farm and the same family owned it for six generations.
22 | WeAreProsper.com
During the time of the cattle drives, the Town of Prosper was not in existence, as Rock Hill and Richland were the communities that were here. It is hard to imagine that cattle ranching was the largest source of revenue prior to 1880. I have a copy of a letter that Henry Parvin had written in March 1870 and in that letter, he stated that he sold 4,000 head of cattle in 1869. He also stated that he planned to sell another 4,000 in 1870 and would then get out of the cattle business. His land was northwest of Prosper located in the Good Hope/Parvin area, which was named after him. He, like other cattle ranchers along the Shawnee Trail, would include their herd with the others from the valley in south Texas as they went north to market.
Sometimes a cattle rancher or a group of cattle ranchers would drive a herd to market with their own cowhands. These cattle drives were dusty, hot, cold, under extreme weather conditions and took long periods of time in reaching their destination. Many cattle, as well as cowhands, did not make it due to the conditions they faced. We tend to take cattle ranching as being easy, but it was indeed a very hard life. It required working from sunrise to dusk and seven days a week. Operating these ranches required many riders, horses, and other support people such as cooks, drivers for the wagons, branding, dehorning, castration, and marking the cattle with a trimming of the ears. This determined if the calf had been branded or not. The cattle were branded to make sure they were the legal owners, as much cattle rustling was prevalent in the area. The large cattle ranches were in the area from the 1850’s through the 1880’s and then larger ranches begin to dwindle because they discovered that the land being used for cattle ranching was very fertile and some of the blackest and fertile land in Collin County. Farming began to become more popular although most farmers kept enough land for grazing purposes as to keep some cattle for their own use and to sell but not in great quantities. Farming was beginning to be the major source of revenue around the turn of the century. We will begin to discuss early farming in the Prosper area next month.

Organization of the 281st P.E.O. Chapter in the State of Texas; Chapter JU, Prosper It all started in a carpool. Tracy Fiers and Patty Felan were members of Chapter FS, Carrollton, of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for many years. Tracy moved to Celina in 1994 and Patty moved to Prosper in 2001. Although there are over 250 local chapters in the state of Texas, there was no local P.E.O. chapter in Celina or Prosper. Then in about 2016, Jolene Neuschafer moved to Prosper and soon joined the carpool to meetings in Carrollton once a month. When June Smith moved to Prosper and joined the chapter in 2018, the carpool grew again. The time had arrived to start talking about organizing a new chapter in the Celina/Prosper area. Upon checking the membership records for P.E.O.s, it was discovered that there were 29 sisters living in the Celina/Prosper area. The group began meeting in late 2018 and quickly had the necessary number ready to commit to organizing a new chapter. By the time the chapter was organized on September 28, 2019, at Prosper United Methodist Church, they had 19 members that would transfer their membership into Chapter JU, Prosper, and seven sisters that would join as new members. P.E.O. was founded on January 21, 1869, by seven students at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. This circle of kindred spirits, bonded by their enthusiasm for women’s opportunities, eventually expanded to include women off campus as well. Through membership, the P.E.O. Sisterhood has brought together more than a half million women in the United States and Canada who are passionate about helping women advance through education, while supporting and motivating them. Friendship is the cornerstone of P.E.O. – it is the legacy left by our Founders and it thrives in our unique Sisterhood. P.E.O. exists to be a source of encouragement and support for women to realize their potential in whatever worthwhile endeavor they choose. True to the mission of promoting educational opportunities for women, education continues to be the primary philanthropy of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. In fact, the P.E.O. Sisterhood proudly sponsors six international philanthropies, or projects, designed to assist women with their educational goals. Texas State Chapter has two additional philanthropies; Texas Cottey College Scholarship Funds, and Texas Star Oaks, Inc., that assist Texans, specifically. As a result, P.E.O. is clearly making a difference in the lives of women all over the world. More than 109,000 women have benefited from the organization’s educational grants, loans, awards, special projects and stewardship of Cottey College. As of April 2019, P.E.O. has 24 | WeAreProsper.com
awarded Educational Loan Fund dollars totaling more than $208.2 million, International Peace Scholarships more than $40 million, Program for Continuing Education grants more than $59.2 million, Scholar Awards more than $26.7 million and P.E.O. STAR Scholarships more than $10.7 million. In addition, P.E.O. has owned and supported Cottey College, an independent, baccalaureate-granting liberal arts and sciences institution, since 1927. In 2018-19, Cottey saw a 10 percent increase in new first-year students and over 70 percent of Cottey students had declared a 4-year major. For more information on the P.E.O. Sisterhood or any of the educational projects, visit www.peointernational.org or contact Tracy Fiers at 214-3845830 or tracyfiers@gmail.com. Prosper YMSL Chapter Supports Journey to Dream YMSL 2019 Ultimate Gift Recipient is Journey to Dream, Kyle’s Place During the month of November, members of Prosper’s Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) chapter completed their Ultimate Gift project by supporting Journey to Dream (JTD), an organization that helps homeless teens. YMSL members participated in several workdays to complete cosmetic improvements for Kyle’s Place, the JTD facility that houses 14 teens. The chapter worked alongside the staff at Lowe’s in Lewisville to add much needed storage solutions to the teens rooms, which included refinishing 14 dressers, custom building underbed storage units, cubby systems for toiletries, shoes, medical binders and mail and refinishing picnic tables. Lowe’s set up workstations for the YMSL teens and aided them in the construction. “My entire team was in awe of the boy’s work ethic and positive attitudes. This has been a great partnership with YMSL and one we hope to sustain,” said Richard Tindall from Lowe’s. Since 2010, the National YMSL has organized an all-Chapter Ultimate Gift event. Ultimate Gift is a special opportunity for a chapter to plan a service project that will truly impact and transform a carefully selected philanthropy. The YMSL Ultimate Gift Project began as a spin-off from a novel of the same name written by Jim Stovall. “This project helped bring awareness to the young men in our chapter that we have teens in our area without a home or family support system. It also helped them understand how and why kids become homeless and how kids can be admitted to Kyle’s Place,” said Jill Beitel, VP Philanthropy for YMSL. Kyle’s Place is a Transitional Living Program for homeless youth working towards independence. Residents of Kyle’s Place are given the support and skills required to become self-sufficient, independent adults. Many residents at Kyle’s Place learn a new way of life and experience love and support for the first time while breaking negative cycles, achieving goals, and being hopeful about the future. “We are blessed that YSLM awarded this ultimate gift to Journey to Dream. Often our teens feel as though they have been forgotten or are invisible to the community. This gift certainly reinforces that they are enough and that they are loved and well deserving. I truly believe if you change a child, you change a family and you will change the community. Thank you YMSL, Richard and Lowes for changing a child with your gift,” said Nesa Grider, CEO at Journey to Dream.
Lovepacs Lovepacs Prosper is a Christ centered mission that seeks to serve children in need by providing the food they typically receive at school (breakfast, lunch and snacks) over extended school breaks. No proof of income is required, and all receipts are anonymous to the Lovepacs organization. Lovepacs offers pickup at schools as well as home deliveries. Lovepacs also seeks to provide opportunities to involve people of all ages in service and help them to adopt caring for others as a lifestyle as they feel they are all the hands and feet of Jesus in our community. Last year Lovepacs was informed that there were a significant number of children without snacks throughout their day. Teachers were personally funding their classrooms. To relieve this undue burden to those who already give so much to their classes personally and financially, Lovepacs Prosper started and stocks Snack Pantries in each school in PISD. Lovepacs is an official 501c3 and relies 100% on donations and volunteers. If you are in need of support from Lovepacs Prosper please speak to your school counselor.

Jimmie is a Prosper resident and the owner of Absolutely Bushed Landscaping Company, an award winning, family and veteran owned and operated business created in 1980 to provide the highest quality custom Outdoor Renovation available to homeowners in the Dallas Ft. Worth area.
Question: Jimmie, I spent most of my weekend trimming some of the trees on our property. I know I’ve seen some people put a black paint on the limbs when they do pruning and others that don’t? Is this necessary for me to do? Thank you for your columns, my wife and I try to read all of them and find them very informative. -Travis B. in Prosper Answer: Hi Travis, actually it’s not a yes or no answer. It’s more time of year when you’re doing your pruning. Most trees have a dormant period, usually around late November until mid February or so. If possible, that is your best time to do your pruning. Sometimes other issues come about and pruning must be done during the growing season. During this time of year the tree is full of sap which, if pruning is done, will leak out of those wounds and attract insects to them. Thus the need to seal the wound. During a dormant time year, all the sap is in the base or root structure of the tree therefore pruning paint would be optional. Question: Jimmie, I can’t figure out what’s wrong with my Nana Nandinas? They are almost totally scorched. I have looked closely for any signs of insects and I don’t see any. It must be a disease or something, any thoughts? Thanks for your reply. -Traci L. in Prosper Answer: Hi Traci, Nana Nandinas are weaker plants by their very nature. It seems that the genetic makeup that provides that rich, red color in winter also leaves them vulnerable to temperature extremes, especially heat, and drought. From the picture you sent me it appears at some point they have gotten too dry. Iron deficiency seems to be adding to your problem as well. Perhaps you should try its cousin the Harbor Dwarf Nandina or now I’m using the newest dwarf in designs called “Flirt”. It could be classified as one of our best lowest growing shrubs or tallest groundcovers in our area. It’s much heartier than the Nana variety and has a great rich maroon-purple in the winter. Question: Jimmie, I have needed to do some transplanting around here since this past summer but I’m not sure when the best time to do it is? Please help!! Thank You! -Johnny L. in Prosper Answer: Hi Johnny, I’m always glad to help. Shrubs, plants and trees are entering their dormant cycle right about now, so if you need to move one to a new location, this is the right time. First, pick your new location 26 | WeAreProsper.com
and dig a hole big enough to comfortably hold the root ball. Then carefully dig out the root ball, being sure to retain as much of the root system as you can. Before the root ball can dry out, place it in the prepared hole, adding back some of the soil, along with some compost, peat moss or landscape mix. You can also add some fertilizer specifically developed to encourage growth in transplants (root stimulator). Tall plants might need staking until their roots take hold. Question: Jimmie, I have a weird question for you. I’m new to the area and I see people constructing curved walkways instead of straight ones? Is there a particular reasoning behind this? I’m considering installing one and was contemplating just a straight one. Thanks, I’ve really enjoyed your columns! -Sylvia W. in Prosper Answer: Hi Sylvia. You’ve probably seen people build brick or flagstone walkways across their yards that are curved, rather than going straight from point A to point B. Building curved walkways serves an aesthetic landscape design purpose. Building curved walkways softens the landscape by counteracting rigid lines of a rectangular house or straight driveway. If the walkway cuts through an area with great visual interest, such as flower beds, shrubs, trees, a water garden, or a rock garden, building a curved walkway makes more sense than a straight, no-nonsense walkway. You’ll want to meander through such an area, slowing down to fully appreciate its treasures. But don’t go crazy and build all your walkways curved, indiscriminately. It depends on the function of the walkway. If you’re building a functional walkway, such as providing a path for you to haul groceries into the house from the car, you will normally want to build a straight walkway. Question: Jimmie, how often do I need to feed my landscaping? I have asked several friends and even the Garden staff at Lowes and I can’t get a straight answer. Thank you so much for your time. -Mike R. in Prosper Answer: Hi Mike, a general answer to your question would be twice a year, in the spring and the fall. I assume you have native type landscaping, so you would need to apply a high quality Tree and Shrub type fertilizer twice a year to put back the nutrients in the soil your landscaping has thrived on the previous six months. A lot of people forget to do this. Your

plants continuously deplete the soil of its nutrients each season until eventually the soil is so depleted you will start to see the landscaping look tired and old when it is literally starving for nourishment. They use these nutrients to continue to thrive, grow and even bloom. It is much like you and me going to our refrigerator and taking out food to eat out of it every day. Eventually you will need to go to Kroger or Wal-Mart and get more food, right? Plants are no different!

Question: Jimmie, What’s the difference between “spray” lawn sprinkler heads and “rotor” heads? I asked an employee at Home Depot and they didn’t know. Thanks for your time sir! -Robert L. in Prosper Answer: Hi Robert! “Spray” lawn sprinkler heads are sometimes designed to pop up out of the ground when the sprinkler system is activated, while others rest on pipes that remain aboveground at all times. Spray heads discharge a large volume of water in a relatively short amount of time, giving them, in irrigation lingo, a “high application rate.” For this reason, sprinkler systems with spray heads are most suitable for even surfaces, not slopes. If you do have to use a spray head on a slope, program your sprinkler system such that water is discharged over several shorter periods. This will help you avoid wasteful run-off. By contrast, “Rotor” lawn sprinkler heads have a lower application rate, so they’re simpler to use on slopes. Rotor heads also apply water more uniformly than do spray heads, making them more suitable for watering larger areas. For people who wish to irrigate large areas of lawn, sprinkler systems with rotor heads would be a logical choice. Well I still have lots more to get to but I am out of space!! I will email each one of you back personally! Until next time… MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM MY ME AND MY FAMILY TO YOU AND YOURS! Jimmie,

What Party Invitations Really Mean for Your Holiday Dress Code Have you ever ripped open a party invitation only to get very confused by the dress code? From “festive attire” to “California cocktail,” we’ve seen it all. Do we wear Santa socks? Ugly sweaters? Cocktail dresses? Or all of the above (we hope not!). One thing’s for sure: we want to make decoding the holiday dress code easy—so keep reading for our take on what that invitation really means and what to wear.
HOW TO DECODE FESTIVE ATTIRE Festive attire means “cocktail attire” or “don’t show up in jeans and a sweatshirt, please,” more often than not. Knowing your audience is extra important here as this dress code is a direction from your host to let you know what kind of party they want to have.
1. First, what’s the hosts’ personality like? Once you’ve removed the invitation from its envelope (or opened it in your inbox!) ask yourself: is this a friend who loves to throw over-the-top dinner parties? Or, is this your old college roommate who hasn’t changed a bit? (Dust off your ugly sweater).
2. What does the invite say? How mysterious is the invite? Do the words seem like multiple (and maybe nonsensical) adjectives strung together or is it as clear cut as “wear black and white?” If the words casual, laid-back, dressed-down or cool appear on the invite, it’s safe to assume less formal attire will do the trick. If the words evening, finest, black-tie, or your best appear on the invite, we’d say it’s time to dress up.
3. Where’s the party at? Consider the venue. Is this year’s fête being thrown at a rented venue or is it an at-home soiree? If the venue is on the grander side, your outfit should fit in with the location, location, location.
4. How close is it to the holidays? Does this year’s “holiday” party come at the beginning or the end of December? Keep close attention to the date and the kind of celebration your host wants to have.

CASUAL GATHERING a.k.a. dinner party, kickback, house party, light-bites gathering, Secret Santa Keep it cute and casual while being merry with friends. A solid pair of jeans with some seasonal texture like velvet or faux fur is the perfect way to turn up the festive spirit!
COCKTAIL SOIREE a.k.a. black tie, evening celebration, cocktail party, dinner party This is your time to shine. Black tie is a chance to go all out: sequins, sparkles & plush fabrics in rich holiday tones! Top it off with a pair of killer heels and the only thing rivaling your sparkle will be the bubbly.
OFFICE PARTY a.k.a. casual cocktail, happy hour, snacks and drinks Ok, so office dress codes may still apply, but that’s no excuse for turning up the heat! Ditch your go-to trousers for a form fitting dress, your classic white-button-down for some forest green frills. If you’ve got meetings in the morning, a blazer is an easy way to stay professional.
SCHOOL CELEBRATION a.k.a. PTA party, classroom volunteering, after school meet-up A party in the classroom is a great time to play with textures and colors. Delicate patterns in festive hues are a sure-fire way to create a cheerful and jovial vibe — perfect to set the mood for a cookie decorating activity!

hristmas in New York is a dream for so many, which is why we’ve chosen it as our travel spotlight this month. It is the most wonderful time of the year, and a very special time to be in New York City. There is so much to do and see…exciting shows, places to visit, shopping and decorations all over the city. If you enjoy Christmas and everything that comes along with it, New York is the place to be! The winter weather in NYC is cold, but if you don’t mind layering up in plenty of warm clothes and jackets, it is a great time to visit. There’s simply nothing better than celebrating Christmas in the city that never sleeps! The highlight during Christmas in New York is the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center. It’s truly something that you can’t miss, and during the holiday season it is THE most photographed thing in the city. Each year the Norway Spruce tree, which has grown for over 90 years, arrives in NYC from various towns in New York and Pennsylvania. The famous tree is typically around 85 feet tall, has over 50,000 LED lights and boasts a tree topper that is made from 25,000 real Swarovski crystals. The Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, and once lit, remains on until early January. On average, the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center receives nearly 500,000 visitors each day, making it the highlight for tourists all over the world. Another huge attraction during Christmas time in New York is ice skating. The most famous rinks are the ones in Bryant Park, the Rink at Rockefeller Center which has the Christmas Tree in the backdrop, and the famous Wollman Rink in Central Park. Speaking of Central Park… it’s always a great destination to visit, no matter what the season. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see the already beautiful, peaceful and magical park covered in snow. After you’ve seen the tree and done some skating, you’ll want to be sure and take a stroll through the streets of New York to see the holiday window displays and do some shopping. The entire city is decorated with wreaths, bright lights and holiday signs. New York City is home to Fifth Avenue, one of the most famous streets for shopping in the world. Calvin Klein, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana have flagship stores there, as well as less expensive brands such as Hollister, Adidas, Apple and Abercrombie & Fitch. Other must-see shopping areas include the Shops at Columbus Circle, SoHo, the Meatpacking District and Herald Square. Finally, no Christmas in New York trip is complete without tickets to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. A true NYC Christmas classic show, it features over 140 dancers who perform for 90 minutes on a unique stage set in sparkling costumes. The stars of the show are Santa Claus and his elves – “The Rockettes”. With the reputation of being the one of the best dance groups in the world, The Rockettes perform perfectly and flawlessly. The popular show features up to five performances per day, but the shows do sell out relatively quickly. Ticket costs range from $50-$400 – and the good news is that there really isn’t a bad seat in the house.

The Big Apple has plenty going on during the holiday season and can be overwhelming if you’re not familiar with the city. It is highly recommended that you book a tour to completely zone in on the Christmas atmosphere. And if you’re fortunate enough to be in the city that never sleeps on Christmas Day, there is no reason to stay in. Many of the restaurants, broadway shows and main attractions are open for your enjoyment.
