Streets, Bridges and Signal Lights Set to Greet 2018 Commuters in Prosper will see roadway changes in 2018 that will make it easier to access the growing number of retail and commercial establishments that have opened their doors for business or will soon do so. New traffic signals are adding to the safety, convenience and flow of commuters traveling along US 380 and Preston Road. Before the end of the month, a traffic signal will be operational at US 380 and Lovers Lane, controlling the flow of traffic into and out of the Gates of Prosper business park. A second signal slated for operation by the end of the month at Richland Boulevard and Preston Road serves the same purpose on the Preston Road side of the commercial center. Michael Bulla, Prosper’s Capital Projects Manager, says more traffic studies are on the horizon, seeking to quantify the number of autos traversing the areas around the Gates of Prosper. “Additional traffic studies will be completed to document the necessity of a signal at the Preston and Lovers Lane intersection,” he said. “Based on current projections, the signal at Preston and Lovers should meet TxDOT’s criteria in late 2018 or early 2019.” Meanwhile, contractors working on the Texas Department of Transportation

project to widen US 380 from four to six lanes are progressing rapidly toward completing the remaining section within Prosper’s town limits, expecting to complete the westbound portion from the Dallas North Tollway to the Town’s western boundary in February. The completion of this stretch promises to improve access to the growing list of businesses, residential developments and institutions on the Prosper side of US 380, including Texas Health Prosper, St. Martin de Porres Church and School and Longo Toyota. Over 40,000 vehicles travel through this segment daily. Kara Brinley, VP and General Manager at Longo Toyota, says the completion of the westbound lane will significantly improve safety. “Longo Toyota of Prosper is dedicated to providing a safe environment for our guests and our team members. Redirecting this traffic will greatly assist us in our mission,” she said. Redirecting traffic away from temporary lanes into permanent patterns allows contractors the ability to begin and accelerate construction of the bridge configurations over US 380 at Preston Road and the Dallas North Tollway. Pillars are already sprouting at the Preston Road intersection, and soon will be erected at the tollway crossing. Both of these overpasses are expected to be completed before the end of the year. Motorists must still exercise caution through construction areas. Fortunately, very few accidents have been reported in the affected area, and police urge continued vigilance.

Town Matters

T wn Matters

From Mayor Ray Smith

The beginning of the new year always fills me with a healthy sense of optimism for our community. This year, though, that sense of optimism might be a little higher than in previous years. Prosper is entering 2018 in a position that it has not seen since the railroad decided to build a line through the middle of it over 100 years ago. That decision essentially put our community on the map. Being able to travel or transport products to most parts of Texas, Oklahoma and beyond created opportunities that are still bearing fruit today.

residents to register on the website www.ITTCommunityChallenge.org and begin logging your workout sessions, your good nutritional habits, your weight loss, and your commitment to become healthier. Take selfies of yourself eating healthy snacks, walking the dog, biking, hiking, jogging, playing sports, and working out. Keep tabs on your weight by entering your progress weekly. Organize a health program at your place of business. In short, do all those things you know are good for you, your family and your co-workers, and keep posting these activities on the ITT website.

We’ve come a long way since those days. Today, many people see Prosper as “the next big thing,” whatever that means. What I do know is that from our humble beginnings at the turn of the century, we are becoming one of the important focal points for growth in North Texas. And, 2018 will certainly bear that out. Are we “the next big thing?” Maybe. But I can guarantee that we pledge to continue being a place where everyone matters. The smalltown feel, the sense of community, the feeling of shared celebration are tremendous things we do not want to lose, whether we’re the next big thing or not.

Our Parks and Recreation Department will be actively involved again, posting events and organized activities at www.facebook.com/ ProsperParksandRec/. Neighborhood walks, free monthly workouts and new community events will be scheduled to not only get us fit, but also to give us opportunities to get to know each other better. Joining the movement in emphasizing healthy living is a new resident group calling itself “Prosper Healthy.” These are folks who have gotten together to do what they can to improve the health and wellness of the Prosper community. Visit their page at www.facebook.com/ProsperHealthy for information on good nutrition and work out tips. They’ll also post information about upcoming Community Challenge activities. We might win this thing a third time, because as you know, I do not go for participation trophies. I go for championship trophies.

The start of the year also reminds me that we are now the two-time reigning champion of the ITS TIME TEXAS Community Challenge in our category. Competition in the challenge starts on January 8th and continues until March 4th, and I would encourage you to become involved once again. Like the two previous years in which we have won, I urge all

HOOPS… They Did It Again

Prosper Basketball begins season ready to set new records By Tish Cama

2017 was a busy year for Prosper athletes. From volleyball bringing home a state championship, to the football team who went through to the third round of playoffs. Adding to the eventful school year, the basketball teams are picking up the heat on the court with new senior leadership and setting new goals for the season. The team is led by head coach Jonathan Ellis and assistant coaches Jon Lewis and Jake Garner. Ellis has a 15-year background in coaching and education, and this will be his sixth year in Prosper. “It is a similar team make up as last year, a lot of returners and I love how the guys have this chemistry with each other,” Coach Ellis said. “They understand the importance of being okay with someone else needing to score more points in order for the team to succeed and they have a good attitude about never taking credit to themselves but instead as a team effort.” Last year, the team ended their season with a defeat in the first round of playoffs. But this year, they finished pre-district 18-2 and began district 2-0. They are currently ranked 6 in the state of Texas according to TABC (Texas Association of Basketball Coaches). The starters this year are senior Captain Taveion White (#21) at Center, junior Captain Josh Davis (#11) at Point Guard, senior Captain Jerry Mcelroy (#2), senior Captain Kyle Jessen (#12) at Shooting Guard, and senior Captain Zach Wrightsil (#23) at Power Forward. “The defense really puts us over the top in how we play this game,” Ellis said. “We will be one of the highest ranked defenses in the state and as of now we are undefeated because of our ability to defend and rebound the basketball.” The chemistry on the court changes the game entirely and that is not only with senior leadership, but how every player contributes. “The main thing that makes our team different from the rest of our region is that we all know our roles. Some players shoot, some pass, some slash, some rebound, some get the team hype. We all know our roles and it makes us stronger as a unit,” senior Zach Wrightsil said. Ellis says that as a coach there is always a want to get better at everything, but this team has shown a passion for the game and for giving it their all every minute. “Those are the little improvements which will make the biggest difference, and making sure we understand every part of the game is important. The team works together to cheer on one another and constantly hypes up before games, but what some don’t realize is the impact that a student section has on the game.” It isn’t just about being there, it is about how the audience engages with the game and players. The team always begins games with the tradition of huddling in a circle and when their name is announced they come out onto the floor with the entire team cheering them on. “Our student section brings a huge boost to our games…cheering on big plays and booing the opponents. It changes the atmosphere of the whole game, making it to where we have the advantage at all times on the court,” Wrightsil said. The team uses the phrase, “Stay hungry and humble” to stay on track for the vision they have set for the season. Never in school history has the basketball team made it to the regional tournament and that is the first goal of the coaching staff and team. “Once we make the regional tournament, we can be two games away from state and that is why we take each game one step at a time and apply all we have no matter who the competition may be,” Ellis said. The team is eager to compete this season but never loses their vision. Says Wrightsil, “This year is going to be a great year for us, helping gel together and playing the game we love. Our coaches support everything we do and we are ready to finish out this season strong!” Coach Ellis leaves a message to all the players, especially the seniors, “Enjoy the moment, every single moment - every practice, every game bus ride, every time on the bench or on the court. You’re making memories to last a lifetime right here, right now, so take the time and enjoy every moment of the game which you love, and the success will follow your actions.”

GROWING Prosper

with Jimmie Gibson Jr.

at least one section of your garden that works really well. That should be a key to telling you what your style of gardening is, as well as what truly grows well in your conditions. Was it the blue iris that bloomed with the bright yellow daylilies? The hummingbirds flying to your Butterfly Bush? The way your Chinese Fringe Flower made all the other plants pop? Viewing your garden in small sections makes it easy to set up season-long eye candy!

Time to Review and Look Forward!!

What went wrong? Did the year seem like the endless year of problems? Always out there keeping things cut back? Some weird bugs showed up on your favorite plants and started eating on them and you were not sure what to do exactly? Everything seemed dying for a drink of water but your water restrictions or lack of your own time kept denying their thirst while they seemed to stay alive but not thrive?

By the time many of you are reading this (Happy New Year to you and yours by the way!) you may be well on your way to filling up your new calendar with a brand new to do list. Even though we tend to get into a “Get off to a good start mode” it can be a really good time to look back at the past year evaluate what we did well and perhaps what we would like to tweak a bit and do a better job or improve upon. It’s a good time of evaluation and planning for the new year.

Did you find yourself telling guests, “I wish you’d been here last week, when [fill in the blank] was in bloom?” You need to play with the sequence of bloom in your gardens. Strive for having a different section at peak at different times, rather than trying to have the whole garden in flower all season. And give more focus to colorful and unusual foliage that’s stunning all season.

This can also be a great time of year to give the same type of evaluation to your landscaping. What worked out well? What didn’t? Keep in mind that reviewing this year’s gardening triumphs and defeats is the best guarantee of success when designing or contemplating the next year’s garden. Garden design requires a knowledge of plants and you’ve got a whole garden full to learn from. Don’t let that experience go to waste, just because it is cold outside or the early spring bulbs are not blooming yet.

Have enthusiastic growers crowded out other plants? If you’re wondering how your lilies turned into a jungle, it’s time to think about doing some thinning and dividing. If you don’t have the time for it now, at least mark the plants so you won’t be tempted to let them be in early spring. New gardeners like instant plants. As your garden matures, you need to be more selective about what gets space in it. If you’re pulling your hair out about too many plants having the run of your garden, consider putting in larger plants and more specimen shrubs.

What went right? What always brought a smile to your face? There’s usually

Perhaps your garden was beautiful but you just don’t seem to be enjoying

it the way you used to. Did the weeds get away from you? Make a note to mulch earlier next year. Sometimes we get caught up in planting or waiting to see what has self-seeded. Before you know it, it’s July and every weed seed that landed in your borders has firmly taken hold. Mulching isn’t fun, but it can free up so much time you would otherwise spend weeding and watering. If you really hate to mulch, get more plants. Exposed soil is an open invitation to weeds. I always prefer Shredded Cedar because it does not float, helps keeps weeds out, bugs hate it and has a nutrient value. Did you take the actual time to smell your own Roses? Did you spend any time sitting and enjoying your garden or better still, entertaining in your garden? It’s a joy to work in a garden, but you need to take time to appreciate what you’ve created. If you don’t have a seating area in your garden, design one this winter. Whether it’s a small table and chairs, a couple of functional chairs or a stone patio with a fire pit, if you build it, they will come. Nothing pulls guests into the garden faster than a warm chair with a view! These are just a very few ideas that pop into my head when I begin to evaluate my or a client’s landscaping, so perhaps it will help you do the same!! Now back to all your emails…I see you and will be responding to all of you very soon! Until next time...Happy Gardening and here’s to a prosperous healthy landscape this year for you all!!

Jimmie Question: Hi Jimmie, Great to see you the other day! Sorry to bug you again but I have a question and just want to be sure nothing is wrong. As you know we are fairly new to the area from the west coast and what I enjoyed all year now looks dead. I am referring to our Crape Myrtles, Redbuds and Japanese Maple trees. Can I be that unlucky and they all died at once? Thank you again for your time and it was so nice meeting you and your wife. Cindy B. in Prosper Answer: Hi Cindy! Thank you for the kind words and nice to hear from you again. Well I have good news for you! You are not the unluckiest person in Prosper! You see each and every one of those Ornamental trees are deciduous. Meaning they will drop their foliage when the ground temperatures get colder in the fall. It is a good time to do any pruning on those you might need and also a good feeding to encourage new healthy spring growth. When temps warm back up in early spring your beautiful foliage will return better than ever! Welcome again to our fine City of Prosper! Send your landscaping and gardening questions to Jimmie Gibson Jr. at http://www.absolutelybushedlandscaping.com or jimmie@ absolutelybushed.com Jimmie is a Prosper resident and the owner of Absolutely Bushed Landscaping Company, an award winning, family and veteran owned and operated business created in 1980 to provide the highest quality custom Outdoor Renovation available to homeowners in the Dallas Ft. Imagine, you are in the middle of your work day and your child’s orthodontic appointment is in thirty minutes. Instead of leaving work early to drive across town so you can pick your child up from school and take them to their appointment, you were able to stay at work while your child was able to make their orthodontic appointment. Well, you can if your child is a patient at Bietsch Orthodontics. Dr. Bietsch recently built a thirty-six-foot custom mobile orthodontic office for his patients. A mobile orthodontic office that currently goes to ALL Celina and Prosper schools every six weeks to provide his patients with their orthodontic adjustment appointments.

Dr. Tom Bietsch Bietsch Orthodontics 221 N. Preston, Suite A Prosper, Texas 75078 972-347-2222 prosperorthodontists.com

Dr. Bietsch’s “Bietsch Brace Bus” has everyone talking and for good reason. Parents couldn’t be happier with the ease of one less appointment that they have to manage into their already busy schedule. Parents receive a video update of their child and Dr. Bietsch at the time of their appointment that explains how their child’s orthodontic treatment is progressing, if there was a change in a wire that may cause soreness later in the day, how their child is doing on their oral hygiene and what they can expect for their child’s next orthodontic appointment. Parents win here at Bietsch Orthodontics because we bring orthodontics to the schools, so they do not have to miss any work. Students win as well because they are out of class much less time and do not have to miss that after school practice or game because they needed to go to their orthodontic appointment. Dr. Bietsch sees how demanding parent’s schedules are and even more with multiple children, that is why he has created the mobile brace bus; a service that makes another doctor appointment for your child and you that much easier. Dr. Bietsch travels with most of his team too. At all mobile bus appointments, your child will be accompanied by Dr. Bietsch, his treatment coordinator, scheduling coordinator and his three-chair side ortho assistants. Long appointments such as getting braces put on or taken off will be done in the primary office at Bietsch Orthodontics, but all adjustment appointments can be accommodated at your child’s school. Dr. Bietsch has treated over 8,000 patients in his eighteen-year career as an orthodontist. The convenience of Dr. Bietsch’s mobile bus, combined with his eighteen years of experience, sets his practice apart from any other orthodontic office in Texas. His unbelievable care for each patient and ability to create perfection within your child’s smile is why so many parents and patients love going to Bietsch Orthodontics.

1 20 Chiropractic care can be a game-changer for countless health challenges. Children, teenagers, and adults alike can experience relief from acute injuries and annoyances as well as serious chronic conditions, often circumventing the need to pursue more invasive and expensive options or medications. Here’s just a sampling of the many areas of health that can benefit from chiropractic care: Neck Pain | Headaches | Back pain | Strengthening the immune system Improving athletic performance | Pregnancy | Children (ear infections, colic, scoliosis, etc.) Injury prevention and treatment Dr. Perriton first realized he wanted to become a chiropractor while in a college class that required observing various health professionals. When a friend chose to shadow a chiropractor, Dr. Perriton tagged along, not knowing his life direction would be set that day. While watching the chiropractor at work, Dr. Perriton saw how this doctor cultivated good relationships with his patients. In fact, entire families came to see the chiropractor, and he was able to help them with many different health issues. From then on, Dr. Perriton knew that becoming a chiropractor was the right choice for him. At Prosper Chiropractic, Dr. Perriton strives to treat patients on an individual basis with state-of-the-art techniques, utilizing spinal decompression, flexion/distraction, cold laser for tissue healing, and physical therapy to support long-term healing and wellness. He strongly believes in the importance of getting to know his patients personally to help them move past their pain or physical limitations to accomplish their life goals. He has successfully cultivated an office atmosphere in which patients feel at home in a supportive and family-like environment. His goal is to unleash the power of the nervous system to give healing control back to the body and provide a more conservative route of care. At the same time, he understands that sometimes medication and surgical intervention is necessary, and he always seeks to develop good relationships with other medical professionals to provide the right care for each of his patients. Dr. Perriton graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and completed his doctorate at Parker University. Before coming to Prosper, he worked with a chiropractor in Highland Park specializing in care for athletes at SMU. Additionally, he ran a successful clinic in Allen, and while there, treated many of the basketball and tennis athletes of Collin County Community College. Dr. Perriton is also a licensed acupuncturist and is currently pursuing a chiropractic sports practitioner certification.

Dr. Veronica Mueller, a Texas-educated dentist, opened her private practice in July of 2017. The daughter of a teacher and a career military officer, she grew up in multiple states and countries, but returned to her family’s home state of Texas as soon as she could. Veronica moved to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University, completing a Bachelors of Science in Biology. She then moved to Houston to attend The University of Texas School of Dentistry, earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery. While living in the Houston Medical Center, Veronica took the opportunity to expand her repertoire by learning from some of the greatest minds in medicine. Upon completing her Doctor of Dental Surgery, Veronica practiced her profession in different settings, gaining knowledge of all types of dentistry. After gaining professional experience, Veronica and her husband, John, chose Prosper as the ideal place to put down roots. When drawing the plans for Gentle Creek Dental, Dr. Mueller knew she wanted to utilize the best equipment and newest technology. Before opening her office, she attended many trainings and C.E. in order to decide on the best equipment and to make sure she was up to date on all the latest technology and techniques. Digital radiography was a must have for her practice. This technology takes the fastest x-rays with the least amount of radiation. And not only are all her x-rays digital, so are the charting and files, eliminating most paperwork. Along with a hand-held X-Ray system, they also use intra oral pictures to help in the diagnosing for your treatment plan. Dr. Mueller is very proud to use digital scanning. Not only is it a great time saver for the patients, it’s pretty cool too. When needing a dental appliance (crown, bridge, retainer etc.) that must be fabricated in the lab, your teeth are scanned instead of using the goopy, oldschool dental impressions. After the scan is complete, you can see the 3D image on the computer screen. It can be rotated, zoomed and much more. And since the files are digital, they can be effortlessly sent to the lab, saving time and eliminating steps that could lead to distortions. This is Dr. Mueller’s favorite tech toy. As technology advances, many more additions may be implemented. Dr. Mueller’s core belief is that lifelong learning is critical to providing excellent care and optimal health. She is proud to be the 3rd generation of dentists in her family. Dedicated to creating a dental practice focused on the needs of the people she serves, she sums up her objective quite simply with saying, “My goal is to have a dental practice that offers everything that I want as a patient.” She invites you to stop by her offices, take the grand tour, and visit with the Gentle Creek Dental Family. They are open Tuesday through Friday, with Saturday hours by appointment.

As a Prosper resident, Dr. Stephans is Prosper’s longest serving chiropractor. He has been serving the community of Prosper and surrounding areas since 2010. Functional Health Centers is conveniently located in downtown Prosper. Dr. Stephans and his wife, Angie, have two daughters, Sophie (4) and Rylee (2). Dr. Brandon Stephans

At Functional Health Centers, they take a unique approach to healthcare in that they look at the underlying cause of the issue, as opposed to looking at just the symptoms the way traditional healthcare does. With all of the recent changes in healthcare, Dr. Stephans began noticing that patient care was suffering and becoming unaffordable. With that conclusion, he decided to make a change in their office – make healthcare affordable and allow patients to receive the care they need. The result? Happier and healthier patients! A Lifelong Friendship -

Betty Hodges Hughes and Betty Jackson Stewart By Leslie Scott

26

WeAreProsper.com | January 2018

I

t’s a typical weekday morning at the Cotton Gin with breakfast crowds gathering and in a crowd of people, there are two ladies there that are as much a part of Prosper as the business itself. Betty Stewart and Betty Hughes have known each other most of their lives. Friends since they were young, these two have a friendship, not just of longevity, but of depth as well. As we sat down to breakfast, immediately these two ladies began talking about the pictures and books Betty Hughes brought to show. Affectionately called an Annual by both, we began our visit by talking about their high school years and how they met and developed such a long friendship. Betty Hughes has a twinkle in her eye when she begins, “Betty [Stewart] was three grades ahead and I knew her and she was a majorette. She’d already graduated and then I was a majorette my senior year. I wasn’t really that good, she could twirl, but I couldn’t twirl. But back then they didn’t care. Just as long as you had long legs!” Betty Stewart disputes this by saying, “I didn’t have long legs.” Not to be deterred, Betty Hughes continues, “but anyway- we stayed in touch. When we moved to Prosper we just hung out. Cousins through marriage – so we are just kind of backdoor relatives – we just all call each other cousins.” Carrying on a conversation with these two is almost like talking to a set of siblings, in particular a set of twins. When asked of their favorite memories together, it’s a swinging pendulum of answers. Both immediately say their most recent favorite memories are with the late Jim Hughes and late Bill Hays. Betty Hughes says, “We went to Branson the spring before Jim died” and Betty Stewart finished with, “we went to Swenson’s lodge together for a weekend. We both went to the same school for 12 years, both go to the Methodist church, historical society together, there’s so many memories we have together.”

Betty Hughes

When asked what attributes they appreciate in the other, Stewart says of Hughes, “She’s more like a sister to me, because I’ve never had any sisters. And if I need anything, I feel like I can call her – we’re just good Betty Stewart friends.” And Hughes says, “She’s always been there for me and if I need something, I just call Betty. When she doesn’t have a broken arm or broken leg!” Laughing ensues and Stewart replies, “Lately I’ve been more broken than anything. I played basketball and volleyball and tennis and rode horses and barrel raced and never had a broken bone. And after I got into my late 70s and early 80s, I’ve had broken bones. It’s catching up to me, but I’ve been lucky all these years and really blessed.” These two both hesitated and thought for a bit when questioned on any guilty pleasures. Stewart says “I love to travel.” Hughes says, “She likes to travel but I don’t, I’m a homebody - home and a good book, but I know I need to get out for socialization.” There were no hesitations when asked of their proudest achievement or accomplishment, as Hughes said, “Our kids,” and Stewart answered, “Kids and grandkids.” Family is important to both of these women. Betty Stewart is the mother of an only daughter, “We didn’t plan it that way, it just so happened we only had one. Doctor didn’t know if they could save me or the baby, so decided that meant only one. I have two grandkids and three great-grandkids – three boys. Our daughter didn’t like to be an only child and said she would have more – and she had a girl and a boy.” Hughes adds, “I have a son and a step-daughter – but 6 grandchildren!” These two also had accomplished careers as well as raising families. Betty Stewart worked for TXU Energy for 37½ years and Betty Hughes began her teaching career in 1959 and had various teaching and administration positions. A lively volley of back and forth ensues between them when asked about

their upbringing and siblings. Stewart begins, “I just had two brothers and always wished for a sister.” And Hughes joyfully adds, “I did too. People asked what do you think of him [her baby brother] and I said I want to send him back and get a girl. You always wish for the opposite.” As we gloss through the pages of their school Annual books, they are continuously complimentary to each other. Betty Hughes takes the lead flying through the pages going back in time. There’s a photo of Betty Stewart, “there she is, look at her long pretty hair!” Stewart glances and the photo and says, “That’s just the way it does – it used to just flip like that and I didn’t do anything to it.” When asked if they wore much makeup Stewart says, “not very much, maybe a little lipstick. I can’t remember putting makeup on.” Hughes points out a picture of herself and Stewart says, “Oh that’s a good one of you too!” The word Favorite is at the top of the pages these ladies are on in several books which is the equivalent to today’s prom queen. They both look amazing and when asked if they still have those dresses Hughes laughs, “Yeah, sure – no, I hold on to a lot of things but not that. I don’t even know or remember how we afforded to have those dresses.” Their Annuals are full of photos and accomplishments of each of them: Betty Jackson: Basketball 4 years, Basketball Co-captain ’53, Sophomore Favorite , High School Favorite ’51, District Journalism Contest ’51-52, Best Athlete ’52-53, Nominee for the DAR ’53, Pep Squad: Majorette ’51-52, Head Majorette ’52-53, Business manager of the “Eagle” ’52-53, FHA Club 3 years, Librarian 1 year, Journalism Club, Typist of the Static, Delegate to State Journalism Contest, Austin ’51-52, Choral Club, FHA Officer 3 years, Freshman Class President. Betty Hodges: FHA Reporter ’52-53, FHA Treasurer ’54-55, FHA 4 years, Pep squad 4 years, Majorette ’55-56, Class Favorite ’53-54, Princess of Royal Court ’55-56, Annual Staff 2 years, Static Staff 2 years. The ladies gloss through the pages stopping here and there to explain junior / senior banquettes, the low number of students in each class, pausing at a photo of Ann Hays, Bill Hays’ wife who Stewart says was “like a sister to me,” and they jump forward to who their classmates became and where they live. They both say they remember where the photos were taken, the memories being made, and what they were doing at the time. Hughes says “My class still meets every month, but hers has a reunion every once in a while.” There are moments while going through the book that are not so happy. Stewart says, “Bill was my travelling partner and now I don’t really have anyone to travel with. Most people are working, or they don’t like to travel. I’m sure if Bill was alive we would be travelling.” And Hughes says, “I know we’re eventually all going to go, but losing our friends and loved ones, that’s hard.” These ladies have seen many changes through the years and seem to embrace them. Hughes says about technology, “I like it, I still have my flip phone, but I like it. And I like my computer except when it breaks down.” Stewart is an optimist, “I think everything has changed for the good. And I do love all the building in Prosper. I know it’s a lot of traffic, but just think when all those stores go in we don’t have to drive very far, that’s a blessing there.” Hughes followed with, “you know the Mayor said some people don’t want many drive-through places, but I like them. If I don’t have her [Betty], or someone to do something with, I can just go grab food and go home and get my book and eat while I’m doing that. I know some people like places they want to sit together as a family too, but I like drive up places to eat.” Both Betty’s have observed Prosper growing and evolving throughout their lives. Stewart points out, “there were 250 people here when we were growing up.” Hughes gets that twinkle in her eye again when she says, “I wish I had that sign, the population sign.” Stewart says wistfully, “I never thought Prosper would grow like it has, you know Prosper is a wonderful town.” Betty Stewart and Betty Hughes have always seemed to be destined to be lifelong friends. Whether related through marriage, neighbors that lived across the street from each other at one time, travel companions, or best friends, they seem to be more sisters than not. These two have experienced great joy, sorrow, humor, and the everyday details of life together. When told that they just can’t seem to get away from each other, Stewart immediately responds with a chuckle, “and we don’t want to!” January 2018 | WeAreProsper.com

Kids Say

why you pooping in the house?” (Eruption of laughter) Christmas is soon, do you do something special for Christmas? Any family traditions? Jacob: We go to our grandparent’s house usually and open gifts there. And we have cinnamon rolls. Nate: Or coffee cake. Jacob: Our mom makes cinnamon rolls and last year I made the coffee cake. Easton: There’s a lot of decorating involved and we usually stay home and I get up early every year.

Jacob and Nate I arrived to interview these two brothers, and although Jacob was very willing, Nate didn’t think he was interested. Nate’s friend Easton was visiting, and he was willing, so Nate agreed to join us after all. Jacob and Nate carried most of the conversation, but Easton joined in here and there too. Before and after our interview there was an enlightening conversation where I learned a great deal about their pets Sedona and Spike (pictured). How old are you and what grade are you in? Jacob: 11. I had to think about that since I just turned 11 on December 7th, and next Saturday he’s turning 9. And I’m in 5th grade. Nate: 3rd grade and I’m 8 years old. Jacob: his name is Nathan, referred to as Nate. Who calls you Nathan? Jacob: I do. Nate: Jacob says it sometimes. And how do you know Nate? Easton: I live in McKinney but we used to go to school together. Do you play any sports? Jacob: I actually just finished playing a basketball game. We are going to sign up for golf, but we don’t know when. Nate: All I play is baseball. Easton: I play baseball and was on his team. Who is the funniest person in your family? Jacob: Nathan! Because of random comments he makes. Kind of like the class clown. Nate: Me, I’m the funniest person in my family! So I know you’re readers, what books do you like? Jacob: Fantasy fiction Nate: eh, I don’t know about reading. Jacob: He’s just starting to like to read. Nate: I like sports books. Easton: I like fiction and I love graphic novels and comics. Nate: Oh, I like comics too! I also know you have a puppy. Jacob: Yes, we got him somewhere near August 20th. And who decided to name him Vinny? Jacob: My dad. Nate: My dad, it’s like a family thing. There’s a movie called My Cousin Vinny, and they took it from that. So we can say things like, “Yo Vinny,

30

WeAreProsper.com | January 2018

Do you have a favorite place to eat? Easton: I have a lot of different ones, but the one I like the most is Pei Wei. Jacob: I know what Nate’s going to say, but mine’s The Melting Pot because you kind of get to cook your own food. There’s a pot in front of you and then you put your food on a stick and it cooks and then it’s like a fondue thing. Nate: And you have to do it for a certain time for it to taste good. My favorite place is Jacob: Estilo Gaucho! Nate: It’s a steak place. I love steak! If you could go any anywhere in the world, where would you go? Jacob: That’s hard because I’ve been a lot of places. That’s ok – would you go somewhere new or somewhere you’ve already been to? Jacob: I would go back to Ireland because it’s a lot stuff I like there like animals and mashed potatoes. They always give you mashed potatoes. And they filmed a lot of my favorite movies there like Harry Potter at the Cliffs of Moher. During the movie when they are about to go in the cave, that was filmed there. The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi was filmed at an island there too. Nate: I have to say probably Ireland or Italy. I want to go back. Wait, actually I want to go back to Alaska. Jacob: Oh, yeah Alaska! Although I did cut my toe open. Nate: I like the wilderness there. Jacob: We saw bears, and deer, and these turkey like things that look like a turkey but run like an emu. And I don’t want to go to the Arctic Circle though because there are clouds of mosquitos! Nate: It forms a cloud there are so many and if you go there you will probably die! What do you want to be when you grow up? Easton: I want to code, be an inventor, a lot of different things that have to do with coding. Jacob: I want to be an artist for music, a dog trainer, or a coder. I can do all three, I’m kind of still thinking about it, but I can do all of those. We are at a dog class right now to train Vinny, so that’s what I’ve been doing. I take notes to do stuff with him. Nate: Automatic, Major League Baseball player or an engineer! Jacob: You’re going to need to practice more if you’re going to do MLB. (There is a look that passes from Nate to Jacob where Nate is clearly reacting to this comment) What was that look? Nate: I said I know. He knows what it means. When I go like this, he knows. What does he know? Nate: That’s enough, that’s what it means. (And he does it again and all three boys laugh hilariously)
