Simplicity Happy New Year Prosper!! We are so excited to start 2019…it’s going to be the best year ever!! There are just some New Year’s that FEEL like they are going to be special, and this is one of them. We have some pretty exciting milestones coming up in our household this year, and we are excited to celebrate them with you! Each of our three girls are embarking on new adventures…one is graduating high school and heading to Fayetteville for college, one is entering high school and our baby is starting kindergarten!! Needless to say, 2019 is going to be a fun journey…and probably a bit tearful around our house! One of the things that I am probably most excited about for 2019 is the word that we’ve adopted for the year – SIMPLICITY!! We are taking it back to the basics and focusing on our family, our faith and our business. What we’ve found over the last few years is that it’s easy to get bogged down with the little incidental things that really don’t matter. And in full disclosure, we’ve spent way too much time dwelling on things that are out of our control. It’s time to put things back in order and remember Who is really in control…and so, with that, we’re entering this year with open minds, pure hearts and a clear vision. We hope that you and your family are excited for the fresh and new energy that 2019 is bringing with it. We’re sure some of you have made a few of your own resolutions and we pray that you find all of the happiness and success that your heart desires. However, if you are like us and not big on the whole New Year’s Resolution thing, maybe you can pick a word for the year too! It was a suggestion, or maybe a challenge, from a friend and we are loving the concept. It feels attainable and focused, and for us, that’s the best kind of goal! We wish you all of the best in 2019, and as always, we are so thankful for our readers and so blessed to be able to share this wonderful town with you! Here’s to a SIMPLY wonderful New Year!!

With Prosper Pride,

Town Matters

From the Desk of Mayor Ray Smith Happy New Year! Lena and I wish everyone a safe and happy 2019 and beyond. We feel extremely blessed to be part of this community, raising our boys, and enjoying the warmth of so many friends. Prosper had a momentous 2018 with so many grand openings, groundbreakings, ribbon-cuttings, and project completions that some people might think the year will be hard to top. Frankly, I know it will be. Our future is so full of promise, that I know we will see more years just like 2018 in terms of growth and development. In fact, the Town Council meets this month in an all-day work session to amend current and longterm plans to guide both Council and staff. Nevertheless, the pace of development within Prosper is actually making it difficult to find the right word to precisely describe what our future holds. The word “growth” comes to mind, and there is certainly a good amount of growth to point to, but the word is not quite right since some of our neighborhoods and subdivisions are reaching a certain level of maturity. “Progress” is another word that is often used to describe our path. Even that word falls a little flat since the word implies that we are making progress toward a finite goal. In reality, while we certainly monitor our forward movement meticulously, there is no way for us to know exactly what our end state will look like, what new businesses will come to town and what other amenities are in store. I like to use the word “optimism” to define our future. And, of course, I will always add my trademark word “tremendous” to add emphasis. So, in my mind, Prosper is enjoying a sustained state of “tremendous optimism” in its growth and development.

10 | January 2019 WeArePROSPER.com

That feeling of tremendous optimism is evident in every corner of Town, from the new businesses opening their doors to the hundreds of families that are putting down roots and making Prosper their new home. Tremendous optimism permeates every decision at the Town Council level, and that optimism flows outwardly to staff, partners, developers, entrepreneurs, homeowners, teachers, and in fact anyone and everyone who has some stake in Prosper. While 2018 will be hard to beat in terms of significance to Prosper, the New Year holds tremendous optimism for all of us. Incidentally, the new year will also mean a significant change in our solid waste collection, after the Council signed a new multi-year contract with CWD. Starting on January 21st, residents will begin receiving new poly carts from CWD, the first sign that things are changing. The most noteworthy change will be that we will move from two-days-aweek service to five-days-a-week service. Most of the Town’s households will be assigned a new pickup day. The Town will be split into five sectors, each one receiving trash and recycling collection service on a separate day. The staff is working on ways to communicate the change in pickup days, along with the other enhancements of the new service, so be on the lookout for information as we make the change. Happy New Year to you and yours!

Chiropractic care can be a game-changer for countless health challenges. Children, teenagers, and adults alike can experience relief from acute injuries and annoyances as well as serious chronic conditions, often circumventing the need to pursue more invasive and expensive options or medications. Here’s just a sampling of the many areas of health that can benefit from chiropractic care: neck pain, headaches, back pain, strengthening the immune system, improving athletic performance, pregnancy and injury prevention/treatment. Dr. John Perriton first realized he wanted to become a chiropractor while in a college class that required observing various health professionals. When a friend chose to shadow a chiropractor, Dr. Perriton tagged along, not knowing his life direction would be set that day. While watching the chiropractor at work, he saw how this doctor cultivated good relationships with his patients. In fact, entire families came to see the chiropractor, and he was able to help them with many different health issues. From then on, Dr. Perriton knew that becoming a chiropractor was the right choice for him. At Prosper Chiropractic, Dr. Perriton strives to treat patients on an individual basis with state-of-the-art techniques, utilizing spinal decompression, flexion/distraction, cold laser for tissue healing, and physical therapy to support long-term healing and wellness. He strongly believes in the importance of getting to know his patients personally to help them move past their pain or physical limitations to accomplish their life goals. He has successfully cultivated an office atmosphere in

which patients feel at home in a supportive and family-like environment. His goal is to unleash the power of the nervous system to give healing control back to the body and provide a more conservative route of care. At the same time, he understands that sometimes medication and surgical intervention is necessary, and he always seeks to develop good relationships with other medical professionals to provide the right care for each of his patients. Dr. Perriton graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and completed his doctorate at Parker University. Before coming to Prosper, he worked with a chiropractor in Highland Park specializing in care for athletes at SMU. Additionally, he ran a successful clinic in Allen, and while there, treated many of the basketball and tennis athletes of Collin County Community College. Dr. Perriton is also a licensed acupuncturist and is currently pursuing a chiropractic sports practitioner certification. He has been married to his wife Liz for seven years, and they they have four wonderful little children Knox, Jace, and six month old twins Tyce and Halle.. When he’s not working, Dr. Perriton enjoys serving at his church and participating in a variety of sports. 221 N Preston Rd, Suite D | Prosper, TX 75078 | 972-347-9933 www.ProsperChiropractic.com

Dr. Chandler and his family moved to Prosper in 2014, and he loves everything about the area. He enjoys practicing and being involved in the community where he lives. His patients are his friends, and he likes seeing them in the

office and around town. Dr. Chandler believes what makes his practice different from others is that he has a wonderful team of individuals who truly care about their patients, and making the office a warm comfortable environment to have your dental work done. He offers a wide variety of Dental Services at his practice, including everything from cleanings, fillings, and root canals; to braces, extractions, and dental implants. For those patients who have anxiety towards treatment, they offer several options to make your visit comfortable including Nitrous Oxide, Oral, and IV Sedation. CONVENIENCE…EXPERIENCE…EXCELLENCE! Dr. Tom Bietsch focuses on these three factors for all of his patients. His goal is to make every appointment convenient for his patients and their family. Imagine, you are in the middle of your work day and your child’s orthodontic appointment is in thirty minutes. Instead of leaving work early to drive across town so you can pick your child up from school and take them to their appointment, you were able to stay at work while your child was able to make their orthodontic appointment. Well, you can if your child is a patient at Bietsch Orthodontics. Dr. Bietsch built a thirty-six-foot custom mobile orthodontic office for his patients that goes to your child’s school. Dr. Bietsch’s “Bietsch Brace Bus” has everyone talking and for good reason. Parents couldn’t be happier with the ease of one less appointment that they have to manage into their already busy schedule. Parents receive a video update of their child and Dr. Bietsch at the time of their appointment that explains how their child’s orthodontic treatment is progressing. Parents win here at Bietsch Orthodontics because we bring orthodontics to the schools, so they do not have to miss any work. Students win as well because they are out of class much less time and do not have to miss that after school practice or game because they needed to go to their orthodontic appointment. Dr. Bietsch sees how demanding parent’s schedules are and even more with multiple children, that is why he has created the mobile brace bus; a service that makes ortho appointments for your child and you more convenient. Dr. Bietsch travels with most of his team too. At all mobile bus appointments, your child will be accompanied by Dr. Bietsch, his treatment coordinator, scheduling coordinator and his three-chair side ortho assistants. Long appointments such as getting braces put on or taken off will be done in the primary office at Bietsch Orthodontics, but all adjustment appointments can be accommodated at your child’s school. Dr. Bietsch has treated over 10,000 patients in his nineteen-year career as an orthodontist. He uses this experience to customize treatment plans for every patient to give them a unique beautiful smile. Everyone is unique; therefore, every patient gets a smile that is all their own. The convenience of Dr. Bietsch’s mobile bus, combined with his nineteen years of experience, and his ability to create custom, beautiful smiles sets his practice apart from any other orthodontic office in Texas. His unbelievable care for each patient and ability to create perfection within your child’s smile is why so many parents and patients love going to Bietsch Orthodontics. 221 N. Growing Prosper

Benefits of Hiring a Professional Landscaper Should you hire a professional landscaping company? You have to weight the pros and cons and use some common sense. You have to ask yourself some important questions first. 1.

Is this my first landscaping project?

2.

Am I planning on doing a little area or a big area?

3.

Do I understand such technical things as drainage, pitching and so on?

4.

What kind of plants work best for what I want to do?

5.

Do I understand how plants work together in landscaping?

6.

Do I want just flowers, or flowers and bushes, or flowers and trees or all of them?

7.

What kind of landscaping would be best for my lifestyle?

8.

How much work and time do I want to put into working in my yard?

There is a lot of information you need to know if you want your landscaping to last a long time. One good rain storm could wash away all your hard work. Your best bet is to either do some research or go to your local garden center or landscaping company. It’s better to go to professionals that make this their life’s work than local chain stores for this type of information. If you would like to try some landscaping yourself, it is suggested that you work with a small area first. To get the most out of the garden you create, 26 | January 2019 WeArePROSPER.com

you need to research the type of plants you would like to implement in your garden. Some plants flower all summer long, while some only in spring, early summer, late summer and fall. You can arrange your plantings so that you have different colors for their prime part of the season. This can keep your garden exciting and colorful. You also need to plant flowers in accordance to their height and spread. Some plants grow taller than others, so they need to be planted accordingly. Some of your plants spread along the ground, so those would most definitely need to be planted in the very front of your garden or they would never be seen and probably die because the other taller plants would rob them of much needed sunlight. There is much preplanning necessary to have a successful landscape. If you want to go for a bigger project and have never landscaped before, you should hire a professional. You might not like spending the money, but if landscaping is not done properly, you could end up with some serious consequences, which could end up costing hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. To give you one of the worst-case scenarios, if you landscape around your house and the pitch for drainage is incorrect, this could cause foundation damage to your home leaving a very costly bill. If you hire a professional landscaper, they should understand all the techniques to avoid these kinds of situations. Please make sure you get references and do some checking on their other completed projects. We are talking about your home here and you need to protect her and keep her safe. When you make a decision on a professional landscaping company you should be rest assured that they will make all the appropriate choices in regard to your home. You should be able to tell them exactly what you want, and they can tell you if that is attainable. Whichever route you take, just make sure that your end result is spectacular and that it will be something you will enjoy for a long, long time!

Question: Jimmie, we can’t thank you enough for the advice you have provided my husband and I over the years! You wouldn’t believe how helpful you have been to us! We have one area out back that just drives us completely bonkers! It is where we store our trash cans, pool equipment and A/C units! This entire area stays shady and our dogs track in mud constantly! I am sure you have other clients with similar issues. I saw you the other day at Kroger, but you were with your kids and frankly, I was too shy to approach you and bother you! HaHa!! Any advice? Erin R. in Prosper Answer: Hello Erin! Thank you for the kind words, next time you see me around town PLEASE don’t be shy! Say hello!! Heck I was probably buying something the kids just HAD to have! Now, on to your dilemma. Those areas you are describing are very typical in established residences. We generally address those entire spaces with a decorative gravel or River Rock and countersink stepping stones of the clients’ choice (I prefer flagstone). You then have no maintenance, no mud, easy access for homeowners or contractors for future maintenance/repairs etc.

Question: Jimmie, I recently received some Monkeygrass from a friend at work. I am planning to go ahead and plant it now, but don’t really know if it requires any special treatment? Any advice you can give me would be great! Pam K. in Prosper.

Answer: Hi Pam, Liriope comes in quite a few varieties. Most all of them can divide into smaller plugs most any time of year. Just plant it into well prepped garden soil and keep it moist. It’s a native ground cover here that generally thrives and does well. Most popular variety is “Big Blue” that has a nice blue/purple bloom in summer. Some people mow or weed whack it down once a year, others do not. That’s a personal preference. Until next time…Happy New Year!! -Jimmie

PROSPER Person of the Year 2018 Nominees

Prosper is the place where everyone matters…and these six individuals are gracious and giving leaders who make Prosper the amazing place that it is! Our community is growing at an unprecedented rate, but the one thing that we all continue to strive for is that small town feel. We are excited to announce this year’s Prosper Person of the Year nominees – they love our town and work endlessly to make it a fun and safe place to call home. While they would not generally seek out this recognition, we are Prosper Proud to celebrate them and all that they do for our community!

Wayne Bartley Wayne Bartley loves the town of Prosper and the people who live here. He spends countless hours serving the community through Cornerstone and the Prosper Chamber of Commerce. Whenever there is someone in need, the first person that I think to call is him. He will drop whatever he’s doing to help, say a prayer or find necessary additional resources. He is a strong family man who loves Jesus and loves to network! Wayne is a successful Realtor because he is driven by building relationships and doing what is best for his clients and friends. He loves to support local businesses and can often be found networking as much for others as he does for his own business. I am so happy that the Bartley’s chose Prosper to call home all of those years ago! Tamara Blankenship Tamara is a wonderful wife and super mom of five children and currently is a bus driver with the ISD. The reason I’m nominating her is because she is godly and extremely selfless. When she commits to something, she gives it her all. Tamara serves as a leader with the youth at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship; with such fervor and tenacity. She is truly a shining light not only at Lighthouse but within her community. She is responsible for the 600 hot dogs that are served yearly at the Prosper Community Picnic. I’ve known her for a decade and each year her service in humanity has grown with the population increase. It is an honor to nominate her. Shaw Eft Assistant Fire Chief Shaw Eft is a good man who does so much for Prosper. Although he’s only been a part of the Prosper Fire Department for less than 2 years, I couldn’t imagine the department without him. He is a wonderful leader who believes in his team and does everything he can to support and encourage them. Just recently, he and a few Prosper Firefighters deployed to California to help with the wildfires. He spent two weeks there helping with them through the devastation. He is a true servant leader and Prosper is blessed to have him protecting us every day!

28 | January 2019 WeArePROSPER.com

Holly Ferguson Holly Ferguson has served in PISD for over a decade. She started as a Principal at Rucker Elementary then moved over to Rogers Middle School. She now works in Central Administration as the Associate Superintendent. When Dr. Watkins was injured last summer, Mrs. Ferguson stepped into his role, leading the district with grace and humility - just as Dr. Watkins would have expected. She has a way of making students, parents, teachers and administrators feel encouraged, loved and appreciated. I think Mrs. Ferguson is the epitome of what makes Prosper great! Chris Kern Chris Kern is a jewel to have in Prosper. He does so many things behind the scenes that many would never even know about. He and his wife Gina are the masterminds behind the Coat Drive for Cornerstone Christmas. His servant heart is evident in all that he does – you can always find him at Town Council meetings, community events and doing great things for Prosper. He also runs a very informative Facebook page that keeps the people of Prosper in the loop about what’s coming around town. Because he spends so much time researching and attending Council meetings, he KNOWS what is on the horizon for Prosper and is one of the best sources of information for our town. Iris Mendeley I am thrilled to nominate Iris for this honor! She does so much for the children in Prosper and has given many of them several opportunities that they may not ever have otherwise. Her leadership at Texas Amps and Axes is second to none, and the students there are blessed to have her in their corner. She created a youth band, Amplified, and has secured several big performances for them over the last year. She is instrumental in the development of these young musicians. We are lucky to have her in Prosper! ONLINE VOTING IS NOW OPEN!! Please visit www.WeAreProsper.com and click on the Person of the Year tab to cast your ballot today! You will have until January 22nd to vote. To find out who wins…watch for your February Issue of PROSPER Magazine!!
