July. It’s the month that summer was made for and if you’ve spent any time outdoors in the past few weeks, it seems to be the month the sun was made for, too. Sure, we’ve had a few storms here and there, but for the most part, the summer months have brought with them bright blue skies. We hope that everyone has had a chance to catch their breath after an eventful spring semester of graduations, end of school year celebrations and activities. It’s nice to sit outside and reflect on another successful school year gone by. It is during these summer months that we are in a state of remembrance and yet also anticipation. It is this nostalgia and excitement that makes July one of our favorite months of the year. July has always been a sentimental time for our family. Probably because it is a sentimental time for our country as well. Few people know this, but because of our love of friends, family and country, we started a little celebration a few years ago that you may have heard of. We wanted to provide an opportunity for our community to celebrate, to come together as brothers, sisters, parents, business owners and ultimately Americans to show appreciation for one another and for the country that is, and will always be, the greatest country on Earth. We have come so far since we, as a young couple, had the idea to start a media company in our living room and because of that, we’ve learned that with passion and hard work even the smallest dreams and ideas can evolve into really BIG realities. We’re very proud, and yet also very humbled, to say that in 5 short years one of those dreams has grown to be one of the largest and most anticipated Independence Day celebrations in the state of Texas. It doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated that it would not be possible without our friends like you. That’s right! On July 3rd, our little family owned business will host and sponsor the 5th Annual Pride in The Sky Celebration at Frontier Park in Prosper, Texas. You are invited! We hope that you too, as our brothers, sisters, business owners and ultimately Americans, will trade your green and orange in (just for the day) for red, white and blue to celebrate America’s birthday and show honor and remembrance to those who made it so, all for the sake of community. We appreciate your friendship and hope to see you there!

Town Matters

By Mayor Ray Smith

It’s a little hard to pin down the exact date that the conversation around Town to build a new Town Hall took its most serious turn, but it was a well-known fact that a new Town Hall was coming, even as far back as 2010, and perhaps even earlier. Things really began to heat up in 2014 when the initial architectural renderings began to appear. Well before that, though, a community assessment had been conducted that pointed to a new Town Hall, the revised and updated Comprehensive Plan included a new Town Hall/library/multipurpose center, and there was a nearly universal agreement that Prosper needed an appropriately-sized and furnished municipal center. It was the meeting of November 29, 2016, though, when a unanimous vote on the Council cleared the way for the construction to begin. At that meeting, an agreement with Pogue Construction was approved, setting the stage for the commencement of work. Work indeed began the following Monday, December 5. What was then Main Street Park was targeted as the location of the new building, and the park soon ceased to exist. In its place appeared heavy construction equipment, a small army of Pogue personnel and subcontractors, and tons of material. From then on, a steady stream of construction noise and flying dust became our constant companions. But that’s about to end. We are at the tail end of what started on December 5, 2016. The new Town Hall/Multi-purpose Building is getting readied for its tremendous grand opening. Plans for the grand opening, ribbon-cutting and dedication are still coming together as a group of Town employees is finalizing the details of the public opening ceremonies. As soon as the plans, dates, times, and proposed

10 | July 2018 WeAreProsper.com

events are completed, they’ll be shared with everyone. Keep looking for information in our community publications and on our social media sites. July is also Parks and Recreation Month, and I strongly urge you to take the family to a park and enjoy the outdoors. I know the heat can be a little oppressive but taking some time in the morning or early evening to enjoy the parks, trails, Town Lake and the various open spaces around town can be very refreshing. Plus, the splash pad in front of Windmill Playground is a perfect way for the kids to cool off. Check out the Parks and Recreation page on the Town’s website or click on www.prosperparksandrec.org and visit a park you might have not been to before. Getting out and enjoying nature is something that can lift our spirits and revive our souls. Finally, congratulations to Craig Andres, our new Council member. He won the Place 2 seat previously held by Kenneth Dugger. As we welcome Craig to the governing body, we bid a warm and fond farewell to Kenneth. His service to the Town has been stellar, and we deeply appreciate his selfless donation of time and talents to the Council.

He believes in the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle…aside from all the Mexican food and cake that he enjoys routinely. He says, “I loved the idea of working with my hands in a field that is both science based and artistic.” Their vision and mission are to be an integral part of the communities they serve, to build lifelong relationships with their patients and families and to bring smiles to everyone they meet. Bodine Orthodontics is a proud supporter of Prosper ISD and surrounding districts, as well as a contributor to many community organizations such as the Prosper Ladies Association and Cornerstone Assistance Network. They are also proud to be involved in community events and have been a Stars and Stripes Sponsor for Prosper’s Pride in The Sky Celebration for 5 years in a row. LIVE ENTERTAINMENT Pride in the Sky 2018

5:00pm - Southern Brave

The Southern Brave Band believes in music that comes from the soul. They bring true, original red dirt country music from south of the Red River- born and bred in Texas, USA. Don Stalling is a genuine troubadour, blending relatable, imaginative lyrics with touching melodies makes their loyal followers keep hitting the "repeat" button. He is joined by bassist Michael Logan, who has played in musical genres that range from bluegrass to metal. Chris Sanchez brings his driving rock leads to add a bit of energy to the songs. Finally, UNT educated jazz drummer Jack Pronske brings a breath of freedom creating a fusion of musical styles. Their songs' styles vary widely, and if you like Texas Red Dirt Music you won’t be able to get enough.

6:00pm - Amplified Hold on to your seats because this band of young rockers is about to blow your mind. Enjoy modern and old-time favorites sung by the musical sensations of Texas Amps & Axes School of Music. From Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers “Free Fallin” and Adele’s “Rolling in The Deep” they’re sure to peak your musical interests and keep you on the edge of your seat. Come ready to be entertained!! Drummer: Hayden Fletcher, age 12 Pianist: David Welch, age 11 Guitarist: Hunter Egan, age 15 Vocalists: Madison Auch, age 10, Nigama Kalangi, age 8 Eleanor Steele, age 13 Don’t let their ages fool you, they promise a jam-packed performance you won’t soon forget so sit back relax and get ready to ROCK!

7:00pm - Jon Christopher Davis Come hear for yourself and be entertained by the bluesy, yet modern and rustic talent of Jon Christopher Davis and Lonestar Attitude. JCD is an American singer-songwriter, musician and record producer whose musical style encompasses country, rock and folk. He has shared the concert stage with Train, Daughtry, The Roots, Michael McDonald, Eddie Money, Hal Ketchum, Poco and Restless Heart, just to name a few. He’s recorded for Warner Brothers, Sony and MCA Records. Stan Lynch of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers may have said it best – “It’s as if Don Henley, Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers met late one night at a Texas Roadhouse parking lot and beat the crap out of each other, and what came out was Jon Christopher Davis. He’s brains, hips and harmonies.” You’re going to LOVE HIM!

To take advantage of the free shuttle, please park on the north and east side of PHS to load. Buses will begin accepting riders as early as 4:30pm but will not take anyone to the event until 5:00pm. We have increased the number of buses this year to cut down on the wait time for the shuttles. The shuttles will deliver passengers to the event by the entrance of the Kid Zone. Shuttles will run continuously throughout the evening, transporting people to and from the park. The very last shuttle prior to the fireworks will depart from Prosper High School NO LATER than 8:55pm. If you are not on a bus by 8:55pm, you will not be able to get into Frontier Park to watch the fireworks. After the fireworks have ended and the Prosper Fire Department gives the all-clear, all of the buses will begin loading passengers to return them to Prosper High School. This will take place at approximately 10:00pm and at the same entrance as passengers were dropped off at. The shuttles will continue to run until all passengers have been returned to the PHS parking lot. The band will play until 11:00pm, allowing for entertainment while everyone is able to grab a shuttle.

Jon Christopher Davis, A Revivalist By Jodie Brownd

A young boy sat at the feet of his Grandfather in anticipation as he stared, starry eyed, at the RCA television in front of him. The pace of his heart sped up as the silhouette of a man, guitar in hand, with his back to the audience made his way across TV land and into their living room. Something was about to happen. Silence filled the small Texas living room as well as the studio audience on the other side of the glass screen. That's when it happened. The man in black turned slowly as his voice cut through the airwaves like a razor. "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash." And with those 4 words came screams and fanfare as his fingers plucked and strummed his guitar as if his life depended on the delivery of each sound landing on the tapping foot of each viewer. The exact rhythm is that of a tired, whistling train on its tracks coming around the bend. The boy never takes

his eyes off this virtuoso called the stranger with the coal black hair. A determined smile takes over his young innocent face. A smile that marks history, one moment…and a child has found his calling. A soul finds a rhythm and the dreamer inside of Jon Christopher Davis is born. This boy, and now grown man, found his calling at an early age and has put one foot in front of the other to live out that calling. We established a truth during our recent conversation that is the idea that there are several types of dreamers in this world. The

34 | July 2018 WeAreProsper.com

kind that are introduced to their life's work early on, whether it be by expectations, whims or traditions, who forget the moment their gift was imprinted on their soul. They’re left wondering what happened to that dream and those feelings that arise when they are recalled. Unless, like Jon, you’re the other type of dreamer. The type that will work 3 jobs, making just enough to stay alive because his craft is what keeps him alive. Traveling on buses, playing late night concerts in smoky bar rooms, scribbling thoughts down on napkins in the hopes that someday, someone will witness the parts of their souls spilled there. These dreamers do "it" anyway, whatever that “it” may be. Finding comfort in the “not knowing” of where the road will ultimately lead. Despite detours, their feet and their hearts don't know the way to any other destination. Jon, the son of two musicians Charles and Kay, grew up in Memphis, Texas, which is 90 miles southeast of Amarillo. He was never pressured to embrace the lifestyle of an entertainer. You can sense it instantly, whether you're sitting across the table from him or watching him perform live on stage, that undeniable need to be a reminder to himself and to others, of days gone by. The memory and the heritage of what was good about life as we knew it growing up in Texas. His music is that of an American Soundtrack…taking you on a journey back to what seemed to be simpler times, even when the musicians who made their marks on our lives were not simple at all. In an age where television shows seek out the next big star and make everyday people into something they may not have otherwise become, there’s an appreciation for the authenticity of icons gone by. Studio executives didn’t decide what they’d hear, the fans listening did. There seemed to be less manufacturing of the men and women who made up the music of our lives.

Like Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly or Elvis Presley, you cannot recreate the personalities or the sounds of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings or Loretta Lynn. They sang about hard times, loss, love and troubles…the kind of troubles lost people find themselves in from being imprisoned, literally and figuratively. They sang about everyday life as they knew it and related to their audiences in ways that only life lessons can teach. The legends were discovered by, and because of, the people who could relate to them and because they were just as calloused by life as the people they

were singing to. Jon Christopher Davis is a revivalist because he is calloused too. "You see that, they’re on every finger,” he says about the callouses that have rooted themselves into his hands and fingertips. They serve as a reminder of the hard work and the repetition of the songs he's played and practiced, like an old record needle stuck in a groove. For him, “They are proof and a daily reminder

for me to be a better man, and that things worth doing are worth taking the stairs for, not the elevator. Unless you take every single step, especially the difficult ones that don’t guarantee instant success, the dreams alone won’t sustain you,” he laughs. It’s obvious from listening to him speak that he has paid his dues. You don’t get attention from country legends like Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, or Hal Ketchum by taking short cuts. The long road has him following in their footsteps with performances like his rendition of Don Henley’s ‘Heart of The Matter’ at the wellknown Bluebird Café in Nashville. He has recorded for Warner Brothers, Sony and MCA Records. Sung background vocals on albums for Arista and Curb Records. Written songs for Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles, Billy Ray Cyrus, Sherrie Austin, Rodney Atkins, Tammy Cochran and several indie artists. His song “Little Bird,” recorded by Sherrie Austin, peaked at number 4 on Billboard’s Top Country Singles Sales Chart. His impressive discography includes collaborations with names like Vince Gill, Radney Foster, Rodney Crowell, Steve Lukather of Toto, Stan Lynch of The Heartbreakers, Dann Huff (Music Producer for Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban) and David Z (Music Producers for Prince and Jonny Lang). He’s shared the concert stage with Train,

Daughtry, The Roots (Jimmy Fallon’s house band), Lyle Lovett, Jack Ingram, Radney Foster, Rodney Crowell, Hal Ketchum, Michael McDonald, Eddie Money, Poco, Pure Prairie League, Restless Heart, Kansas and REO Speedwagon. When asked what the highlight of his successful career has been, he answers with a crack in his voice about having written the song “Two of The Lucky Ones,” sung and recorded by none other than the one and only Dolly Parton along with his friend Hal Ketchum. Having created music for the voice of one of the world’s most

beloved performers, marked a milestone for Jon and it’s obvious when he humbly tries to speak the words to honor that privilege. He is also humble about the fact that he realizes how lucky he is to do exactly what he dreamed of as young man, in the state he loves, alongside the love of his life, Kelly, and their daughter Claire. Aside from being a revivalist, Jon Christopher Davis is a virtuoso, having also created music in his own right like the inspiring “Relay for Life” that he wrote for the American Cancer Society or “The Boy I left Behind” about a ‘troubled kid in a dead-end town’ fighting in Iraq. Lyrics from the song, “young and green and scared as hell” is making history as something of value to people that enjoy all genres of music. The main thing that will ensure his success as an artist and a legend himself, is that he asks himself the important questions. “Do I inspire and light a fire in those kids that are like me in their grandparents’ living rooms? Do they see that fire in me on stage or on TV, that passion, that they really want to find in themselves? Do I instill and revive that? Was I true to myself for having done so?” For Jon Christopher Davis, the answer is yes. A revivalist is a person with a tendency or desire to revive a former custom or practice. There isn't any question that Jon Christopher Davis can bring back the old days for those whose dreams are rusty or ignite a flame of hope like a beacon for future dreamers. It’s true what they say, the world has changed, but the hearts of the people listening and their love for the great legends, is something that will never die. Jon Christopher Davis is breathing life into our hearts and the music industry, all while he continues to keep the past alive. His new album "New Wind Blowing" has already seen huge success with its first track, “Vinyl Revival,” winning the #1 requested song spot on 97.5 (KLAK). You're sure to recognize some of your favorite vinyl records in the video, so don't miss it! You can hear

the new album on iTunes, Apple Music, Amazon MP3, Spotify and of course www.JonChristopherDavis.com. And on July 3rd, you can hear for yourself, the bluesy, yet modern and rustic talent of Jon Christopher Davis and Lonestar Attitude at Cedarbrook Media's 5th Annual Pride in The Sky Celebration. The event begins at 5:00pm. Please follow www.PrideInTheSky.com for additional information regarding the festivities, the music lineup, the food choices, activities for the kids and our ever-popular, light-up the sky, firework presentation. Small Space to Work With? Container Gardens

Y

ou can grow almost anything in a container. A simple potted basil plant could be considered a container garden, but there are so many other possibilities. Gardening in pots and containers gives you the ability to insure great soil, experiment with color, move your garden with the sun and raise your garden to a comfortable working height. Maybe the best feature of container gardening is the ability to create a whole new garden every time. Here is some helpful advice to increase your success! Establish the Size of Your Container Garden Make sure there is enough room in the container for the plants and soil. Take into account the mature size of the plants and their growing habits. Upright growers will need a wide base for balance. Sprawlers will need a pot deep enough to drape over. As the plants grow, the root systems will fill the pot and the soil will dry more quickly. It’s okay to fill the diameter of the container with plants, but make sure there is plenty of room for the roots to move downward into the soil. Provide Good Drainage Always have drainage holes or at the very least, a 1-2-inch layer of gravel at the bottom of the container. If you are using a decorative pot without drainage holes, consider planting in a plastic pot with holes that is one size smaller than the decorative pot and using the plastic pot as an insert.

GROWING Prosper

Soil Requirements for Container Gardens Use a good potting soil mix, not garden soil. A mix with peat, perlite or vermiculite will retain moisture longer and yet be well draining. It will also be lighter and won’t compact as the season goes on. Using a chunky-style potting mix in containers of 5 or more gallons will help the soil mix remain loose even longer. Choose Plants with Similar Cultural Requirements In a garden bed, you can select which plants need water and which to pass over. Not so with a container garden. Select plants that will be happy with the same amounts of water, sun, heat and food. Avoid aggressive spreaders that will compete with neighboring plants and consider dwarf varieties.

with Jimmie Gibson Jr.

Favor Drought Tolerant Plants Most container gardens are going to require daily watering in hot weather. Even so, there will be times when your potted plants are going to be baking in the sun. Give your container a fighting chance by favoring plants that can handle the intensified heat and dry soil of a container garden. Balance the Size of Your Plants and Your Container Container gardens look best when the plants are in balance with the container. Try to make sure your tallest plants are not more than twice the height of the container and that the fullness of the plant material is not more than half the width and as wide. Judging Sun Exposure Try not to sit containers in full mid-day sun. You may have chosen plants that say they require full sun, but container gardens heat up much more quickly and intensely than in the ground gardens. Most plants will welcome some relief from the mid-day sun. On the other hand, when you must position a container in the shade, consider putting it by a wall that can reflect some light back. The plants won’t suffer from the extreme heat, but they will benefit from the indirect light. Watering Container Gardens Lack of water can quickly kill plants in a container garden. Unlike plants grown in the ground, container plant roots can’t move down deeply in search of subsurface water. Check your containers daily for water needs. Check twice daily in the heat of summer and with smaller containers.

Fertilizing Container Gardens Some potting mixes come with fertilizer already mixed in. Some don’t. Either way, container plant roots can’t spread out looking for additional food in the soil nearby, so you will need to replenish soil nutrients regularly. Good choices are a time released fertilizer mixed in when planting or a water-soluble fertilizer every 2 – 4 weeks. Keeping Container Gardens Fresh Don’t be afraid to switch out plant material for the change of season. No plant can go on blooming forever. When one plant starts to fade, look for another to take its place. This way you can start your container garden in the spring and go until frost. With container gardens, sequence of bloom is entirely within the gardener’s control.

Question: Jimmie, I kept my Hibiscus tree in the garage over the winter. It did not freeze, however it does not look very good. What is the best process for getting it back into good shape for spring? Tiffany T. in Prosper Answer: Hi Tiffany! Hibiscus and other tropicals in general suffer when they are in cool, dark conditions for an extended period of time. Your best bet would be to trim and reshape it, and then repot it into fresh planting soil. It will do best in spring full sunlight. By the summer however, you would probably want to move it back in a location that gets mainly morning sun and some afternoon shade.

TIPS FOR PLANNING A SUMMER VACATION FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY By Rosh Ramanujam, Owner of Kiddie Academy of Prosper

Gone are the days when you and your partner could jump on a plane or get in the car with one bag in hand for a spontaneous vacation. Now that you are a parent, family vacations have become another item on your to-do list. They require a great deal of planning ahead in the hopes that you can accommodate work schedules, camp schedules and the good ole fashioned need for relaxation and fun. In this month’s article, I’m sharing tips to help make planning your family’s summer vacation a more pleasant, and dare to say fun, endeavor: Formulate a Plan. There are key questions to be answered before diving into the sea of summer vacation planning.

•What is your budget?

•How long do you want to be gone?

•Who is going and what are their interests?

•Is the destination new or a return trip?

If you start your research without these answers, you’ll be finishing your plan in 2019. Have a Loose Itinerary. Traveling with young kids and no agenda can be a recipe for disaster. Know what activities are available

and schedule them into your trip, allowing for some flexibility, of course. You don’t want to waste time while on your vacation trying to research options, such as theme parks, horseback riding, bike rides, museums, etc. Set aside some down time or allow for family members to do separate activities as well. Start a list. If you’re a natural list-maker, this will come easy to you. Making lists for everything from what to pack to a list of songs to listen to in the car, to a list of activities to do when you get there can really take the guesswork out of planning on the fly. Try using a digital list-maker like Wunderlist for Gmail, a plugin for your Gmail account that allows you to check your to-do list while you check our email! Keep it Documented. It’s already tough to juggle daily routines, work responsibilities, social plans and planning a vacation just adds more balls into the air. Get organized by keeping a list, or creating a calendar item on your smart phone, of all the “to dos,” such as making reservations, buying supplies, purchasing tickets or items to pack. Keep a folder of any receipts, print outs, tickets or schedules that will be needed on the trip for easy reference. Foreceipt Receipt Tracker App is a great app to track your receipts, bills and expenses. A little smooth planning can lay the groundwork for some great anticipation before the big trip! I’m Rosh, the owner of Kiddie Academy of Prosper, located at 650 North Preston Road. We are excited to open our brandnew, state-of-the-art academy in the fall of 2018. We serve children ages 6 weeks through 12 years. The educational programs at Kiddie Academy of Prosper emphasize continuous, open communication between teachers and parents concerning each child’s development. But most importantly, we learn while we’re having fun. We invite children to embark on the Kiddie Academy journey that will enable them to learn and grow socially, physically and intellectually.
