Best Summer Ever 38 days…as I write this, I’m looking at only 38 days left with my family intact and all under the same roof. We’ve got one leaving the nest next month and we’re just trying to soak up every last minute. This summer feels different. It’s like we’re trying to cram an entire lifetime into 3 short months…and I guess in a way we are. We are holding on to every bit of family time we can. Whether it be hanging by the pool and listening to music – which they ALWAYS play too loud for my taste… or hanging at the lake with our “framily”…we’re not wasting one single minute. We’ve had trips to the nail salon with just us girls. Preparing for a long road trip and much deserved family vacation. Movie dates, big breakfasts, shopping trips, amazing homemade dinners and “sm’oreos” over the fire pit. These are all things we should do on a regular basis, but we’re being super intentional about them right now. We hope that each and every minute is emblazoned into their memories. This is what summer should always be! I remember as a kid that we used to go to the lake and camp almost every weekend. That was how we vacationed. My mom had an enormous packing list and every Thursday we spent the entire evening packing up the truck and the boat so that when they got off work the next day, we could hit the road. And here’s the thing…I HATE camping. I’m not really an outdoors kind of girl. But my parents loved it and some of my best memories of my mom are of us on the lake, and of us GETTING READY to go to the lake. I’ve heard some research that says your mind is more susceptible to creating memories when you are on vacation and out of your regular routine. So, while we’re living it up this summer with the kiddos, I hope that doing a few “out of the ordinary” things are opening some of those compartments in their brains that will help the memories stick. My goal over the next 38 days is to make each and every experience different and unique. Maybe we’ll go to a different ice cream parlor, drive a little farther for our chips and salsa or take a few extra trips to the lake. Anything to get us out of our normal routine and make some more memories. And you never know…I may just let them control the volume on the music! With Prosper Pride,

Prosper EMS Wins National Recognition for Pre-Hospital Care Crews Win Highest Award Possible from AHA
The time it takes to get a heart attack victim to the nearest hospital is critically important, the faster the better, of course. The American Heart Association, though, is quick to add that the type of care extended during that brief period, called pre-hospital care, can make the difference between life and death. That’s the basis for the AHA’s “Mission: Lifeline” program, a campaign to increase awareness and heighten skills for Emergency Medical Service personnel who are tending to persons suffering heart attacks, known medically as cardiac arrest or myocardial infarction. Mission: Lifeline applies measures to participating EMS crews against four sets of metrics designed to quantify the quality of care and medical outcomes of patients while under their pre-hospital care. Participating for the first time in 2018, the Prosper EMS program was recognized at the Bronze level, the highest level available to EMS crews participating in their initial year. Silver and Gold levels are awarded to programs that have a multi-year record of excellence in pre-hospital care, making Prosper eligible for these levels in 2019 and beyond. A formal presentation of the recognition was made at the June 11 Town Council meeting.
10 | July 2019 WeArePROSPER.com
“Our paramedics are devoted to being fully prepared when confronted with any and all emergency calls, most especially during a cardiac arrest,” says Fire Chief Stuart Blasingame. “Providing the highest in pre-hospital care means that we can extend lives and improve outcomes. We’re honored that the American Heart Association recognized those efforts.” The Mission: Lifeline EMS recognition program was launched in 2014 to recognize the achievement of the pre-hospital providers and their collaboration with each other and destination hospitals specifically in the care of STEMI (ST-elevated myocardial infarction) patients. The STelevated designation refers to a specific EKG reading. STEMI patients are the most at risk, and thus need the highest level of care and monitoring. “The most meaningful accolades and recognitions to us are those that come from organizations like the American Heart Association, our partner hospitals and other medical stakeholders,” said the Chief. “But the most important ones are those that result in the survivability and improved quality of life of our residents and their families.”

Making an Impact…On and Off the Field By Joyce Godwin
The months of May and June were eventful for the Rick Carpenter family. Prosper’s long-time head baseball coach finished a stellar baseball season with the Prosper Eagles on the Regional level, announced his retirement and saw his son’s team play at Globe Life Park in a rare interleague series when the Cardinals came to Arlington for the first time since 2011. Coach Carpenter and his Eagles won the District 9-6A title and finished a 32-8 season with a loss to Rockwall in three games in the Class 6A Region II quarterfinals May 18. But it was that very run for the State crown that kept Coach Carpenter from watching his son, Matt Carpenter of the Saint Louis Cardinals, play in Globe Life Park. On the next day, when Rick Carpenter could be there, Matt didn’t play. It was his day off, and his dad called it “brutal timing.” During that series, when asked if he planned to retire, the seasoned high school head coach said he wasn’t planning on it at that moment. He explained he has always closed out his season without making any decisions until a month or more into the summer. He reasoned that when the season ends, he is drained and might be willing to walk away before he is really ready. Instead, he chooses to come back to the issue with a fresh mind and heart. That was the day after his season finished in May. A month later, Coach Carpenter did decide it was time to end his storied career and begin a new season of life. Carpenter won 74 percent of his games in 12 seasons at Prosper and ended with a record of 329112-3. He is one of the most successful baseball coaches in Texas history racking up a career record of 883-311-8 and winning four state championships…the last of which was in 2015 with Prosper. 12 | July 2019 WeArePROSPER.com
On June 8th, son Matt Carpenter, who wears No. 13 for the Cardinals, sent out the following on Twitter: “Congrats to my Dad @RickCarpenter14 on his retirement. 40 years in coaching, 37 as a teacher and head high school baseball coach in Texas! 883 wins 4 state titles and 1 national title, member of THSBCA hall of fame..but more importantly the impact he had on the lives of many kids.” Two of those kids he mentions are his sons – Matt and Tyler Carpenter who both signed with a major league team. Tyler signed with the Mets and though he didn’t get out of the minor leagues, Rick Carpenter said the younger of the two was okay with giving it up. Some of his other players to get to the pros are Kipp Wells, drafted by the White Sox. He was a first-round draft choice in 1998. James Loney has had a 10-year big-league career and was drafted by the Dodgers. Chad Huffman was also called up for the Yankees and played for a time on the Cardinals with Matt. He was still playing in 2018 according to MLB references on the Internet. Carpenter is clearly proud of the accomplishments of these players, but they don’t have to make the pros to spark Coach Carpenter’s pride. Young men come back to see him all the time and say “thank you” for what they learned from him. There are lawyers, teachers, entrepreneurs, coaches and more, all thankful for the influences he’s had on their lives. A press release from Prosper ISD states, “Carpenter is one of only two coaches in the state of Texas to have won State Championships at two different schools winning the titles for Elkins in 1995, 2002, and 2003 and Prosper in 2015.
“During his coaching years, Carpenter has accumulated 29 playoff berths, 19 District Championships, 19 recognitions as District Coach of the Year, and Coach of the Year recognition from the Houston Chronicle, the Dallas Morning News, Texas Sports Writers State Coach of the year, MLB Players State Coach of the Year, Houston 5A Coach of the Year, NFHS Texas Coach of the Year, BCA District 6 Coach of the Year, ABCA Regional Coach of the Year, BCA National Coach of the Year, and USA Today National Coach of the Year. “Carpenter has been named to the Elkins Baseball Hall of Fame, Franklin High School Hall of Fame, Texas High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame and was recently named to be a member of the inaugural class of the Prosper ISD Athletic Hall of Honor. Carpenter has coached 34 professional players during his time as a Texas baseball coach.
“Carpenter retires with 40 years in education to enjoy retirement with his wife Tammie, three children and three grandchildren. Prosper ISD Athletic Director, Valerie Little spoke about Carpenter’s retirement saying ‘We have mixed emotions about seeing Coach Carpenter retire from Prosper ISD. We are very sad to see him go but also excited for him and his family and the time they will have to spend together in this next chapter. Coach Carpenter has impacted hundreds of lives while in this profession and his impact on Prosper ISD baseball and the District in general are immeasurable…he will always be a part of Prosper Baseball.”

Memorable Family Moments Educational activities ideal for making memories together
E
FAMILY FEATURES
ducational activities and plans that allow kids to flex their brain muscles in fun and creative ways can be ideal ways to spend family time that makes lasting memories. While children typically gain invaluable knowledge and experience in the classroom, purposeful activities done outside of that setting can help encourage kids to keep learning and make family moments more enjoyable for everyone involved. From planning trips that celebrate animals and the great outdoors to rainy day activities at home that inspire creative expression, these ideas can produce some family moments worth remembering. 22 | July 2019 WeArePROSPER.com
1. Go on a scavenger hunt. From native species of plants, animals and insects to neighborhood landmarks, there are plenty of interesting things that can be found right in your own backyard. Organize a scavenger hunt and work together in teams of family members to search for each item on the list, then do more research on the things you found once you return home. For a real challenge, expand your hunt to the city limits of your hometown and make a day trip of the adventure. 2. Hang out with wildlife. Learn about different species of animals, how to help protect them and the importance of
eco-friendly everyday practices by visiting a destination like an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)accredited zoo or aquarium. You can explore the challenges facing endangered species, discover how community programs are spurring positive change for conservation and learn more at aza.org. After learning about animals that need help, you can visit zebrapen.com/ aza for fun kids games, coloring pages and other activities that encourage creativity. Many animal sanctuaries and wildlife recovery centers also have endangered species and offer educational information about them. 3. Visit a national park. Many park ranger programs provide opportunities to interact with the animals that live in the area, as well as information about any endangered animals and how you can help with conservation efforts. While in the park, you can also enjoy a nature hike, have a picnic lunch and view the different species of plants in the region. 4. Enjoy an arts and crafts day. Spending time doing an art project is a hands-on way to help introduce kids to new ideas and ways of learning. Engage the entire family by creating crafts with different subjects of interest. This can help create conversations and opportunities to further explore what your children are interested in. 5. Organize a game day. A play day can be just as fun as it is educational. Choose from a variety of games that can allow players to get extra creative. Options like Pictionary or charades tap into different types of creative skills, which can keep everyone engaged while they’re learning to express themselves effectively in new ways.
Capture Moments That Matter
Make your family’s learning adventures more memorable by encouraging kids to capture their experiences on paper. The practice of communicating on paper can help lock in memories, plus it’s a clever way for kids to practice practical skills in an engaging and productive way. Adjust these ideas as needed to match the ability level of each child so the whole family can participate. 1. Write about experiences in a journal or diary. For older kids, encourage them to use words to describe their adventures. Ask younger kids to draw a scene or image that captured their attention or excited them the most. 2. Design a diorama about your family’s adventures to display in your home to show extended family and friends. Make it a conversation piece by asking kids to think about an endangered species and depict its living environment. Available in standard, glitter, neon, metallic and pastel colors, tools like Zebra Doodler’z® allow little designers to explore the nearly endless possibilities for color coding, sketching, journaling and embellishing. 3. Take photos to share with friends and family both online and in-person. Get creative with your photo-taking by encouraging kids to think about the story they’ll tell through the images. It might be a series of selfies tackling exciting new activities or documenting a sibling’s first experience at the petting zoo. Another way to capture photographic memories is a photo treasure hunt, where kids have a list of items to search for and photograph during each outing. 4. Create a family calendar to plan your summer activities together. Anticipating upcoming adventures is part of the fun. Let kids help you keep track of what’s coming up and build excitement with a personalized calendar. Make it a work of art by asking kids to draw icons or small images that depict upcoming activities with an option like Zebra’s Sarasa® Fineliner Pens, which are available in 12 vibrant colors. 5. Share experiences on social media. Let friends and family in on the fun by sharing your photos, drawings, dioramas and other creations online. Seeing the positive interaction and praise-filled comments from loved ones can help reinforce the value of creative expression to impressionable young minds. 6. Create scrapbooks to help remember family moments. Keep the pace of life from fading those precious memories by assembling scrapbooks to commemorate family adventures. Make the scrapbook a family affair with everyone contributing their own creations. Find more ideas for capturing and sharing experiences at zebrapen.com.

Volunteers for Town’s Boards and Commissions Sought Applications Due by August 2, Appointees take Office on October 1
The annual call from the Town Council for Prosper residents to volunteer for open seats on the Town’s boards and commissions is being placed, as 19 positions among the five boards and commissions are in need of filling. “Serving as a volunteer on boards and commissions is an impactful way that citizens can participate in the community’s decision-making process,” says Town Secretary Robyn Battle. “The Council encourages all eligible citizens to step forward and consider serving.” Applications are being accepted until Friday, August 2. Boards and commissions advise the Town Council on policy development and administration of services. Appointments are made each year by the Town Council as members’ terms expire or as vacancies occur. To be considered for an open position on the various Town boards and commissions, individuals must fill out an application form and be willing to attend regularly scheduled meetings; must agree to serve a full term; and meet certain eligibility requirements. Applicants must be residents of the Town or its Extraterritorial Jurisdiction and must have been so for at least one year at the time of application. Only registered voters are eligible to apply. “Applicants may be asked to undergo a brief interview with the Town Council so that Council members can gauge the applicant’s suitability for specific positions,” said Battle. Applications may be obtained from the Town Secretary at Town Hall, 200 S. Main, or electronically at www.prospertx.gov on the Boards and Commissions page under the Government tab. Applications will be reviewed and all applicants, including incumbents, will be considered for an interview. A meet and greet reception will occur on August 27 at 5:00pm to allow applicants to learn more about board service and interact with Council and staff members. Building a Balanced Diet with a Better Sandwich F FAMILY FEATURES
ad diets come and go, and as many Americans find, so do the pounds they lose. Most experts agree that eliminating, or drastically reducing, any of the major foods groups from your diet can be detrimental to your health and prevent you from achieving long-term healthy eating goals. Each of the food groups plays a distinct role in fueling your body and providing it with the vitamins and nutrients it needs. Attempt a well-rounded approach to eating, such as one that includes more nutritious choices for popular dishes like sandwiches. In general, pay attention to the variety, amount and nutrition of the foods you consume. Consider these ideas for creating a balanced diet and a nutritious sandwich to help ensure you get enough of each food group:
Start from the Outside There are two groups of grains: whole grains and refined grains. Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel, while refined grains have been milled for a finer texture and are required to be enriched per government mandate to help the population make up for 26 | July 2019 WeArePROSPER.com
nutrient shortfalls. Grains should account for about one quarter of each meal, but at least half of them should be whole grains – a fact that may surprise some people. “Many health professionals mistakenly encourage consumers to skip the bread when trying to improve diets,” said Yanni Papanikolaou from Nutrition Strategies Inc., who completed a study to assess the energy and nutrients contributed from sandwiches in diets of children and adolescents. “Americans need to think twice before cutting bread from their diets. In fact, bread packs more of a nutrient punch than a caloric one.” The ingredients inside a sandwich, not the bread itself, are the most significant drivers of calories, fat and sodium, according to Papanikolaou’s research. A separate study published in the journal “Nutrients” shows grain foods contribute less than 15 percent of all calories in the total diet, while delivering greater than 20 percent of three shortfall nutrients – dietary fiber, folate and iron – and
greater than 10 percent of calcium, magnesium and vitamin A. Consumers can significantly and positively impact their caloric, fat and sodium intake by making more deliberate decisions about sandwich ingredients, including choosing either whole-grain or enriched-grain bread. Find more information about the role of grains in a healthy diet at GrainFoodsFoundation.org.
Rethink the Ingredients Making more nutritious choices with sandwiches and positively impacting your consumption of calories, fat and sodium is oftentimes a matter of changing the way you stack ingredients between the bread. Consider this sample sandwich: two slices of whole-grain or enriched bread, 2-3 slices of lunchmeat, two slices of cheese, a few spinach or lettuce leaves and a slice of tomato. Contrary to popular belief, research shows that sandwich eaters who choose either whole- or enriched-grain bread can consume less calories, fat and sodium compared to the typical sandwich consumed in the American diet. This demonstrates the need to focus on the ingredients between the bread for a better (more healthful) sandwich. Try a different take on a lunchtime favorite by adding spicy horseradish to this Roast Beef and Arugula Sandwich, or make packing a lunch even simpler with this Ultra-Thin Pastrami Sandwich Lunchbox.
Protein According to the USDA, most Americans get about the right amount of protein in their diets, but could do better at choosing leaner options and adding more variety to their menus. Incorporating more variety doesn’t have to mean sacrificing convenience. For example, while prepared meats like deli meats, hot dogs and jerky are sometimes a target of critics, numerous studies and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans affirm they can be part of a healthy, balanced diet. Prepared beef products provide a convenient source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Because most prepared meats are pre-cooked, they offer consumers easy, on-the-go access to the nutrient density in meat. The prepared meats category is diverse and offers choices to meet nutrition needs, tastes, budgets and personal preferences. Thousands of products are available in the meat case, including lowand reduced-sodium products, low- and reduced-fat products, American Heart Association-certified, organic, Kosher grass-fed options and more. Growing Prosper
Want a Colorful Perennial You Can Count On? Consider Hostas! Hosta plants are herbaceous perennials. The most natural way to group hosta plants is by leaf-color. The foliage of hosta plants can be blue, gold, or green. Sometimes, one will find a pleasing blend of those colors, as when there’s just enough yellow and green to form chartreuse. In addition to all this variety in color, hosta plants are often times variegated. As if all this weren’t enough, the leaves of hostas come in a number of sizes and shapes. Shapes can be elongated (sword-shaped, for instance) or something more rounded (such as those with heart-shaped leaves). In some cases, leaves are flat; in others, concave. Finally, leaf surfaces may be smooth or bubbled or “seer suckered”. Hosta plants also produce flowers, and these, too, exhibit variation, both in color and size. They bloom a magnificent tall lavender color! Hostas are usually treated as shade plants, since the colors of their foliage tend to fade if exposed to too much sun. The gold-leafed types of hosta plants are an exception: they will not attain their maximal golden color without receiving a bit of sun, preferably morning sun. By contrast, most green-leafed and blue-leafed hosta plants will lose the rich color of their foliage if they receive too much sun so always lean toward shade. Hostas With Green Leaves Hosta plants are more often grown for their foliage than for their flowers. Such specimens should be grown in partial to full shade. An exception may be made for Hosta ‘Plantaginea,’ which will bear white flowers that are highly fragrant, if the plant is given sufficient morning sunlight. In fact, one of the common names for these hosta plants is “fragrant” hosta plants, and their flowers are larger than those of most hosta plants. Hosta ‘Plantaginea blooms in late summer. Fragrant hosta plants can be grown in planting zones 3 – 9. At maturity fragrant hosta plants will stand 1’ – 1.5’ tall with a spread of 1.5’ – 2’. Grow 28 | July 2019 WeArePROSPER.com
fragrant hosta plants in a sunny area. Hostas With Gold Leaves Hosta plants with gold leaves should be planted in partial sun to bring out their color fully. That color can range from a true gold to a chartreuse, depending on variety, location in the yard, geographical region, etc. Hosta ‘Ground Sulphur’ stays under 1’ tall, with a slightly greater spread. It blooms in lavender, early in the summer. Zones 3 – 8. Hostas With Variegated Leaves (My Personal Favorite) Variegation in hosta plants is manifested in a couple of different ways. Foliage is termed “medio variegated” when the lighter color (white, a lighter green, or yellow) occurs in the center of the leaf. For example, Hosta ‘Undulata Variegata’ (zones 3-8) is white in the middle and green at the edges. These hosta plants reach 1’ – 2’ in height, by about the same width. They produce a lavender bloom in early summer. Grow in partial to full shade. By contrast, when the lighter color occurs on the edge of their foliage, hosta plants are said to be “marginally variegated.” An example is ‘Patriot,’ my absolute favorite of them all, which is grown in zones 3 – 8. Its leaves are green in the center and white on the edges. These hosta plants reach 1’ – 1.5’ in height, with a spread of 2’ – 2.5’. Their lavender blooms appear later than do those of Hosta ‘Undulata Variegata’ and should be grown in partial to full shade. Are Hostas Low-Maintenance? Yes! they are reasonably low maintenance, not least of all because the dense foliage of hostas crowds out much would-be weed growth around them, making hostas an effective groundcover. However, it might be good to still supplement with mulch. But don’t mistake “low-maintenance” for “no-maintenance”! Slug Control for Hostas A taste for beer has been the downfall of many of these creatures! You may find it helpful, as well as amusing, to know that slug pests, too, are drawn to beer -- with even more disastrous results. Simply set a bowl or small similar container outside at night in the planting bed where your hostas grow. Then fill it with a couple of inches or so of beer. Drawn by
the smell of the beer, slugs will scale the sides of the container and take the plunge -- into the beer, where they drown. It is one beer party which your Hostas, will most certainly enjoy hosting! Question: Jimmie, I have a strange question for you. What kind of flowers or shrubs can I plant to keep my bees happy?? I know that sounds silly, but I really enjoy seeing the honeybees in my backyard. -Katie R. in Prosper Answer: Hi Katie, that is a rather strange question but here is your answer! Pretty much anything that blooms between May and October will make bees happy. Look for long blooming varieties such as Abelias, Althea (hibiscus, rose of Sharon), Honeysuckle, Buddleia (Butterfly Bush), Crape myrtle, Hydrangea, Magnolia, Mock orange, Spirea, Viburnum, Lavender, Rosemary, Thyme and Oregano. Most any herb variety and annual flowers such as germaniums, petunias, pentas, vinca, purslane, Moss Rose, Lantana, and Verbena are good options as well. Question: Jimmie, with summer fast approaching is it too late for Crape Myrtle pruning? Also, I know there are a lot of varieties of Magnolia Trees. I really like them but want to make sure I get the right one. I need some privacy near my back fence line, but only have minimal depth of 4 – 6 feet to plant along that fence. So sorry to be rambling, I know you’re a super busy guy! And THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your company does at our local school to help out our children at all grade levels. It means so much to the kids, parents and faculty! -Christina B. Answer: Hi Christina, thanks so much for the kind words! We love giving back to the community, especially the kids! Now onto your questions. Yes, it probably is a little late to be pruning on Crape Myrtle Trees now that they are fully leafed out and blooming. Best time to prune those will be when they are dormant between November to February. On the Magnolia trees, using the space your describing your best two varieties will be the Little Gem or Teddy Bear. Both are great dwarf varieties and do very well here with minimal care. Until next time…Happy gardening!! Jimmie,

DID YOU KNOW? There is an intricate group of receptors within the body called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This complex network impacts many areas of health and is most abundant in the brain and immune system. Studies have shown the ECS to be responsible for important functions such as sleep, relaxation, inflammatory responses, and cognitive ability. The ECS is normally fueled by the healthy production of endocannabinoids. The challenge arises when endocannabinoid production becomes impaired or slowed. The good news is that nature has gifted us with a solution. Phytocannabinoids innately occur in the hemp plant and can serve as a replacement for the endocannabinoids your body may be lacking.
THE NEWS IS OUT Since ancient times, the hemp plant has been revered for an abundance of health benefits. Hemp is naturally rich in phytocannabinoids. This amazing botanical includes hundreds of
other biologically active compounds, each one with its own potential for health benefits. However, when the plant is consumed in its full and natural arrangement, the potential for health impact explodes. This phenomenon is known as the “entourage effect” and it only occurs in full spectrum hemp oil.
